ANNUAL REPORT 2012 SPIRITUALLY SUSTAINED RECOVERY SAVING LIVES | TOTAL ABSTINENCE | TWELVE STEPS SPIRITUALITY | COMMUNITY | ACCESSIBLE | AFFORDABLE PROVEN | EFFECTIVE | SOBRIETY | CARE | THIS IS WHAT WE DO... FULL, MEANINGFUL, PRODUCTIVE LIVES TIME-TESTED PROGRAM OF LIVING | A CARING COMMUNITY IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE | A DEEPER SPIRITUAL CONNECTION ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT IN ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS HAPPINESS Letter from the President Saving lives and improving the quality of life for all those affected by alcoholism and drug dependency is what The Retreat is all about. Behind the comprehensive continuum of recovery services offered at The Retreat lie several fundamental concepts that have guided our efforts from the beginning. • Care should be affordable and accessible to all those who need it. • Nothing works better to promote true and sustained recovery than total abstinence from all mood altering chemicals and active involvement in the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. • Although alcoholism and drug dependency are multi-dimensional illnesses requiring a multi-disciplinary response, at its core it is a spiritual illness that requires a spiritual solution. Over the next few years the addiction treatment field is poised to undergo some significant changes: • The looming unknowns of the health care reform act; • The rising cost of care; • The growing challenges provided by an epidemic in heroin and narcotic pain medication abuse; • The Twelve Step-abstinence based model being challenged; • And a rapidly increasing focus on harm reduction and medically-managed recovery strategies. All pose significant challenges, and potential opportunities for the addiction treatment field in our country. How this will impact the still suffering alcohol and drug dependent individual and their families is unclear. We know that no model of care is right for everyone and 1 The Retreat 2012 Annual Report people should be informed about the various options available to them. Those who choose The Retreat model of care do so because they desire to have a life free from alcohol and mood altering chemicals and an immersion in the spirituality of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. THIS is what we do. As the field looks for new answers, it is essential that we don’t lose sight of the most successful program promoting happy, sober and sustainable recovery in our history: the Twelve Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous. There has been NO approach over the past 76 years that has been more accessible, produced better outcomes and saved more lives than AA (and associated Twelve Step programs). Millions of people are alive today as the direct result of AA’s effective and time-tested program of living. It’s free. It exists in nearly every community in our country and is readily available to all who need it. Fifteen years ago, The Retreat was founded to provide a robust immersion in the spiritual teachings and practices of Alcoholics Anonymous. We are a community-based, supportive, educational alternative for those not requiring a medical/clinical model of care, a return to a simpler more basic approach to helping people recover. We have moved the care of addiction out of the costly, often inaccessible, healthcare delivery system and into the community by connecting people who want recovery with people who have it. Our nearly 15 years of outcome data have clearly proven that this approach is effective, affordable and has helped thousands of individuals and families access a life of recovery. 2 There is room for many pathways to recovery in the addiction treatment field. The Retreat’s overarching priority is to save lives followed closely by a commitment to help the men and women we serve to develop a program of living that promotes full, meaningful and productive sober lives. So, although we must always remain open to innovation and new methods in the treatment of those we serve, we must never lose sight of those strategies that have proven over time to be most effective. For those who choose The Retreat model of care, this goal is best achieved and sustained through our steadfast promotion of total abstinence from all mood altering chemicals and active involvement in the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Celebrating 15-years On June 21, we celebrated our 15-year anniversary. In the years The Retreat has been in existence, we have served more than 14,000 individuals and families affected by alcoholism and drug dependency. In 2012, in spite of these challenging economic times, The Retreat performance exceeded all of our expectations by helping 1,753 individuals and families access a life of recovery. • Our 30-Day Residential program served 702 men and women; • Our Non-Residential program (meeting in Wayzata and St. Paul) including a track specifically designed for Older Adults, served 158 men and women; • Our long-term Sober Living residences helped 121 people transition back into a productive life in the community; The Retreat 2012 Annual Report • Our Family program served 197 family members; • And our Center for Spiritual Development helped 410 individuals to maintain and strengthen their spiritual foundations. We are on course to serve 1,800 people at The Retreat in 2013. Helping those in need We continue our commitment to ensure that the inability to pay does not block individuals from getting the help they need. Thirty percent of Retreat guests receive some scholarship funds to aid in their program participation. Thanks to the generosity of our donors we’ve been able to provide this needed assistance to more people every year. The Retreat gave over $300,000 in 2012 and will provide even more assistance in 2013. From our inception, $1,731,564 has been provided to help make The Retreat services available to those who need them. Expanding our Reach We are continuously looking for new ways to bring The Retreat model of care to more people each year. The following are a few such initiatives that we’ve been working on this past year: Main Campus Expansion In June 2013 The Retreat will undergo a major expansion project by adding a second story to the administrative wing on our Wayzata campus. This will allow us to expand our Older Adult and Non-residential services and add some much needed office and meeting space on our main campus. The project will be completed in September and will dramatically increase our capacity to help more people. The Retreat New Zealand In an effort to make recovery affordable and accessible to more people, we continue working to assist others to replicate The Retreat model of recovery in communities throughout the United States and abroad. We are pleased to announce that as part of this effort on April 1st, 2013, The Retreat New Zealand opened its doors. Modeled after The Retreat in Minnesota, this 30-bed facility in Auckland, New Zealand, will provide the same community-based, supportive educational recovery program The Retreat has become known for. The Retreat New Zealand Board of Directors, CEO Roger Green, Program Director Craig LaSeur and all the great staff and volunteers should be congratulated for their years of hard work and commitment to making the dream of The Retreat become a reality in New Zealand. Long-term sober living In 2012, The Retreat opened our 5th long-term sober-living facility at 265 Summit Avenue in St. Paul’s historic Summit Hill neighborhood. We now have the ability to help 63 men and 3 The Retreat 2012 Annual Report women practice the principles of recovery as they transition back into sober, productive and meaningful lives. To live in The Retreat Residences our guests must remain sober and chemically free, work full time, become actively involved in Alcoholics Anonymous, and become productive members of the community. At a cost of $500-$600 per month, the average length of stay for our residents is approximately 9 to 12 months and has proven to be a critical bridge from our 30-day program to a vital and spirited recovering community. myRecovery.com To help more people recover and bring the vast resources of recovery related information together into one easily accessible format The Retreat, in 2010, introduced myRecovery. com. We now have over three thousand active members! This online recovery resource offers four key components: a) a social networking site designed specifically for people in recovery, b) an online aftercare program facilitated by The Retreat staff using video conferencing technology to bring people together face-toface with each other to support our alumni in their first year of recovery, c) online videobased twelve step meetings, and d) the most comprehensive resource directory of recovery 4 related information in the world, including thousands of AA and Al-Anon talks, videos, a national AA and Al-Anon meeting directory, a variety of self scoring assessment tools, articles, blogs, podcasts and many other amazing features. A Message of Gratitude On behalf of The Retreat board of directors and all of our staff I want to thank our donors, volunteers and friends for making The Retreat the special place that it is. We could not have accomplished any of this without you. We are forever grateful to all those who have worked so hard to make this dream a reality. We can’t thank you enough. In Gratitude, John Curtiss President The Retreat 2012 Annual Report RESULTS Our outcomes in 2013 continue to improve according to our independent follow-up evaluations conducted through 2012. Of those responding to our survey (6-month follow-up completion rate was 64.2% and the 12-month follow-up completion rate was 61.0%): • 59.2% of our guests reported total and continuous abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals for the 6 months after their involvement at The Retreat; • 55.9% of our guests reported continuous abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals for the 12 months after their involvement at The Retreat; • 94 percent of our guests said their quality of life had improved significantly; • And 98 percent reported high or very high satisfaction with The Retreat indicating they would recommend it to others. It’s important to note that of those who did relapse following their stay, 63 percent had one to three episodes of use and returned to abstinence and were at least 60 days clean and sober at the time of the 12-month survey. 5 “ As has consistently been reported, The Retreat data continues to be some of the strongest, most compelling data the evaluation team has seen in over twenty years of evaluating a variety of addictions programs. Past guests continue to speak highly of their time at The Retreat and with a reverence towards the experience seldom seen. This statement is our research team’s “summary and conclusion” from our 2012 outcome evaluation report. ” FOREVER GRATEFUL EXPANDING OUR REACH | VAST RECOVERY RESOURCES A SIMPLER MORE BASIC APPROACH | A SPIRITUAL SOLUTION EXCEEDING ALL EXPECTATIONS Development Overview 2012 marked the launch of the third fundraising campaign in the 15 year history of The Retreat. Co-chaired by board members Terry Troy and Peter Vogt, the campaign committee, in conjunction with The Retreat’s leadership, seeks $3.475 million in contributions to support the 3,200 square foot expansion and redesign of the main facility and the renovation of 40 guest rooms. In addition, donations will be used to fund the scholarship program, our growing replication effort and to retire the mortgage debt on the three Retreat-owned sober residences in St. Paul. The campaign is slated for completion by December of 2014. The Retreat Wayzata facility was last overhauled in 2004. The family center was completed in 2005 and opened in 2006. Since then nearly 11,000 men and women have been served and five new programs developed, all accomplished without adding additional program space or conducting any room refurbishment. This current project is timely and important to the preservation of The Retreat standard of care and meeting the needs of the communities we serve. For more details on the campaign and to learn about naming opportunities, please contact VP of Development, Bruce Binger at 651-430-0698 or Event and Fundraising Coordinator, Catherine Christiansen at 612-501-2632. Go to our website, www.theretreat.org, to see floor plans, a rendering of the expansion and to view the list of naming opportunities. 7 The Retreat 2012 Annual Report The board’s announcement of the campaign received a strong response from The Retreat constituency. As in previous campaign initiatives, the support we are receiving is fueled by a widespread belief that The Retreat is a consistently viable, affordable recovery option that adheres to its original mission while pursuing program improvements and operating efficiencies. After fifteen years The Retreat remains a place that “saves lives, that changes lives.” We are pleased to report that $1,250,000 was received in contributions in support of the campaign during 2012 and that we are on the way to meeting our projected timeline and financial goals. Overall giving for the year increased nearly 50%. Employee giving increased by 31%, from $42,527 to $55,117 in support of the guest scholarship fund. Donations from the board, alumni and businesses were all up by more than 30%, resulting in a strong kick-off to our campaign. Of the 1,054 gifts received, 362 were from first time donors, evidence that our message and mission continue to resonate with those who are familiar with the work we do. We are grateful to all who provide philanthropic and volunteer support to The Retreat and are reminded daily that our accomplishments can be traced directly to their individual and collective efforts. In gratitude, Bruce Binger VP, Development 8 The Retreat Board of Directors would like to thank the following individuals for their dedication, generosity and leadership. “Carrying the Message” Campaign Committee Bruce Binger John Beal Mike Brown Catherine Christiansen Fran Coyne John Curtiss Jim Griffith Kathy Gabler Judy Halabrin Kevin Hart Larry Hendrickson Debbie Johnson Mike Lewis Pat O’Neill, Sr. Terry Troy Peter Vogt CARRYING THE MESSAGE CAMPAIGN $3,475,000 $3,250,000 $3,000,000 $2,750,000 $2,500,000 $2,250,000 $2,200,000 $1,500,000 $1,000,000 $1,750,000 $1,250,000 $750,000 $500,000 $250,000 Graphic shown above reflects the status of campaign funds raised as of the printing of the 2012 Annual Report.
