English (Action) To prepare for his role, in the film Dark Shadows Johnny Depp undertook a weight-loss regime and a diet of green tea and low-sugar fruit, getting his weight down to 140 pounds. English (Action) English (Comedy) English (Horror) English (Drama) Arabic Malayalam Monday, May 28, 2012 (From left) Characters from the movies Spiderman 4, G.I. Joe, Dark Shadows, Men In Black 3 and The Expendables 2 REUTERS F the summer 2012 movie season were a film in its own right, there can be little doubt it would be a sequel - or a reboot - and in either case, it would likely feature a superhero. Hollywood’s summer season kicked off with the release of The Avengers and as with recent years, the four-month period is dominated by superheroes, sequels and franchise reboots featuring epic battles between good and evil. With the summer season generating as much as 40 percent of the annual domestic box office, the pressure is on to lure core audiences of mostly young men to theatres, and superhero films, sequels and reboots most often do exactly that. Movies based on characters and stories that are well-known, such as those in comic books (The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man), or games (Battleship), film sequels (Men in Black 3), remakes (Total Recall) and best-selling books (What To Expect When You’re Expecting) reach audiences of built-in fans that typically turn out in droves. Book-to-film titles like The Hunger Games and Dr Seuss’ The Lorax already have helped push movie ticket sales up 14 percent this year to $3.3 billion. Theatre attendance is up 17 percent giving box office watchers reason to think the summer will top last year’s $4.4 billion in seasonal revenues. “With the attendance increase, more moviegoers have been exposed to the trailers of the upcoming summer movies so there is more awareness,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office division of Hollywood.com. I Hollywood’s summer of superheroes and sequels “Then to have the gold standard of the superhero world on top of a new Men in Black, Battleship and a new Pixar movie among other things, we could be looking at the first $4.5 billion summer,” he added. This summer kicked off with The Avengers. Internationally, the film already has pulled in $178 million since it’s opening day in 39 markets. The Amazing Spider-Man (opening on July 3), a franchise reboot with Andrew Garfield taking the crime fighter role from Tobey Maguire, and the third installment of director Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise, The Dark Knight Rises (releasing on July 20th). On May 25, for the first time in 15 years, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones reprise their roles as secret Agent J and Agent K who track aliens living on Earth to make sure they don’t get out of hand in Men in Black 3. “It’s a good summer movie,” director Barry Sonnenfeld said. “It’s not overly deep. It’s the Will Smith you want to see - he’s funny and charming. Tommy Lee Jones is very dry. This time you can expect time travel (with Josh Brolin playing a young Agent K) and at the end, “To have the gold standard of the superhero world on top of a new Men in Black, Battleship and a new Pixar movie among other things, we could be looking at the first $4.5 billion summer” — PAUL DERGARABEDIAN PRESIDENT OF THE BOX OFFICE DIVISION OF HOLLYWOOD.COM you understand much more about their relationship over the last 15 years.” Aliens wreak havoc throughout the summer in films as Prometheus (June 8), Ridley Scott’s is-it-or-isn’t-it prequel to Alien, and the comedy Neighborhood Watch (July 27) starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill. The fighting keeps going in sequels G I Joe: Retaliation (June 29) and The Expendables 2 (August 17). And a double reboot, of sorts, takes place on August 3 when Colin Farrell takes over Arnold Schwarzenegger’s role in Total Recall, which opens alongside Jeremy Renner breathing new life into a non-Matt Damon Bourne film, The Bourne Legacy. Even women get in on the action. Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron battle each other in Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1). Family-friendly Pixar joins the fray, too, introducing for the first time a female lead character - a young Scottish warrior - in the animated Brave (June 22). “It seems in the wake of the box office success of Twilight and now The Hunger Games, female audiences wants something with a little more bite to it,” said Dave Karger, movie writer for Entertainment Weekly magazine. Still, traditional offerings aimed at women remain important for summer alternative programming, and this year sees the ensemble comedy What To Expect When You’re Expecting (May 18) starring Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez, romantic comedy Hope Springs with Meryl Streep (August 10), and musical drama Sparkle starring the late Whitney Houston and former American Idol winner Jordin Sparks (August 17). Family films also blanket the season, as is typical, because the studios expect air-conditioned theatres to lure moms, dads and kids on hot summer days. In addition to Brave, there are several familiar characters embarking on new adventures in films such as Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, (June 8) and Ice Age: Continental Drift (July 13). Comedy always finds a place in summertime, too, with many bigname stars tickling fans funnybones. Johnny Depp re-teams with long-time collaborator Tim Burton on Dark Shadows, Sacha Baron Cohen introduces a new outrageous character with The Dictator and Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg team up for That’s My Boy (June 15). Even politics, typically serious business, plays for laughs with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis starring as political rivals in The Campaign (August 10) directed by Jay Roach. “Politics has become so insanely rough, the political ads are so full of half-truths and manipulations, we thought it would be interesting to make a movie about the making of candidates,” Galafianakis said. “Obviously we heightened it for a comedic effect.” Finally, on June 15, a film version of the smash Broadway musical Rock of Ages debuts in theatres boasting a cast including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand rocking out to music from the ‘80s. “It’s the perfect for guys,” said director Adam Shankman, who also made Hairspray. “The music is all classic rock. It’s the only musical in history that every man will know all the words to when they walk in.” 34 Monday, May 28, 2012 PLAYHOUSE www.qatar-tribune.com Beetle Bailey Blondie YESTERDAY’S ANSWER Popeye Spiderman LEARN ARABIC Min-el Wadeh Obviously Yureed Want Yuhafeth Maintain Zits Nawo Sort Shakhsi Personal Hyatt Life Dennis the Menace The Lockhorns Hoy en la Historia May 28, 1937 The Volkswagen company was founded in Germany to produce a revolutionary car designed by Ferdinand Porsche which became the Volkswagen Beetle Phone: 44666810 FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTACT US AT: Fax: 44654975 Post Box No: 23493 Email: admin@qatar-tribune.com 1937: $XVWULDQSV\FKLDWULVW$OIUHG$GOHU ZKRLQWURGXFHGWKHFRQFHSWRIWKH ´LQIHULRULW\FRPSOH[µGLHGLQ9LHQQD 1998: Pakistan conducted five underground nuclear tests in response to similar tests by India 2008: 1HSDOZDVGHFODUHGDUHSXEOLF IROORZLQJWKHDEROLWLRQRILWV \HDUROG+LQGXPRQDUFK\ 2008: Engineers announced that Italy’s famous Leaning Tower of Pisa had stopped moving for the first time 3LFWXUH*HWW\,PDJHV S TA R TA L K ARIES [march 21 - apr19] Be prepared to go more than halfway when dealing with others today, because the Moon is opposite your sign. Monday, May 28, 2012 TRAVEL www.qatar-tribune.com 35 Titicaca, world’s highest lake, at risk Travel guide LAKE Titicaca, the highest commercially navigable Lake in the world, located on the border of Peru and Bolivia, is at risk from at least five environmental factors, the UN has said. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) warned about five threats that would affect Titicaca, situated at a height of 3,811 metres above sea level, the Prensa Latina news agency reported. According to the UN study, released by Bolivian state newspaper Cambio, the Titicaca water system and its environs may be affected by the impact of global warming, the fast population growth, and changes in the use of the soil near the water body. It also mentions as threatening factors the uncontrolled urbanisation, pollution of water sources and inadequate regulations for disposal of liquid waste from mining, cattle raising, fishing and aquiculture. Titicaca is a sacred place for the Inca civilisation, as Incan mythology says the first Inca king, Manco Capac, was born here. It also states this was the place where the world was created from, when the God Viracocha came out of the lake and created the sun, the stars and the first people. LAKE TITICACA Pools of pleasure on France’s Cote d’Azur The best swimming in the Cote d’Azur is not in the Med but in pools and cascades in the steep valleys a few miles inland, says Daniel Start, author of Wild Swimming in France The Cote d’Azur DANIEL START GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE O The Clue d’Aiglun The Cote d’Azur NLY half an hour from the hustle and bustle of the millionaires’ coast is a remote landscape of clear rivers and water chutes, bubbling natural Jacuzzis and wonderful places for snorkelling and swimming. These are probably the most beautiful cascades in all of France, but as very few people venture into these wild hills near the Cote d’Azur, you’ll probably have them all to yourself. What better way to quench the heat of a Provence summer? The most dramatic of these aquatic playgrounds is the Clue d’Aiglun, one of the best-known of the Clues de Haute Provence, a series of gorges in the hills north of Cannes. Here, water flowing down from the Alpes-Maritimes has sculpted countless grottoes and rock passages in the white limestone. Soaring buzzards and the scent of pines greeted me as I arrived at the spectacular road bridge which spans the gorge. Far below the Esteron river has cut a silvery cleft through the mountainside and emerges in a string of enticing azure pools. A path leads down through the arid scrub to the oasis below. There I found white marble ledges perfect for picnicking and for diving into these vast basins of crystal mountain water. Heading upstream, to where the river narrows between high cliffs, is decidedly more adventurous. So I strapped on my aqua-sandals for some serious aquascrambling, into the heart of the clue itself. Water gushed and thundered ever more loudly as I swam upstream against the current, shafts of light filtered down from the high roof, and as the channel deepened and the water churned I understood how Jonah felt after being swallowed by the whale. Downstream from Aiglun, just beyond the village of Roquesteron on the old France-Savoy border, Clue de Pierrefeu is a more gentle stream set in a magical woodland. Overhanging ferns provide shade from the baking sun and smooth rock slides drop into perfect little bathing pools, ideal for children. I continued down to another tributary, the Riolan, for an even more sublime dip. First I followed an old mill leat, hewn from the cliff face, then swam up an aquamarine channel before arriving at a series of caves. Smooth polished chambers have been sculpted from the rock, and these eventually emerge at a moss-covered cascade, twinkling with encrusted calcium. This sparsely populated region has eagle-nest villages, built long ago to overlook and defend key routes and territories. Nearby Sigale, on a high outcrop over the Riolan, is one of the best. The two medieval towers, remnants of the ancient fortifications, stand high above the village on the southern edge, overlooking the valley. This is a fine place for an early evening aperitif at the solitary bar, a place to share tales after a day’s swimming. There aren’t many places to stay in this remote region, so we wild camped (generally tolerated so long as you don’t light a fire). Hiking down the valley at sunset with cicadas playing in the wild thyme, we found a stretch of the Esteron by the Pont de la Cerise, a medieval packhorse bridge that spans a great blue pool. On that warm, star-filled night, surrounded by mountain peaks and ancient oak forest, we bivouacked on the flat rocks by the river, cooked supper and went skinny-dipping under a rising moon. 36 Monday, May 28, 2012 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 7:45 pm BBC World: SPORT TODAY 7:20 pm Cartooon Network: HERO 108 9:40 pm Extreme Sports: DRAGRACE HIGH 10:00 pm Discovery HD Showcase: EXTREME ENGINEERING TV PRIME TIME GUIDE 7:00 PM 7:30 PM 8:00 PM 8:30 PM BBC WORLD OSN NEWS CARTOON NETWORK DISNEY CHANNEL WORLD BUSINESS REPORT LIVE MSNBC THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW HERO 108 GOOD LUCK CHARLIE SPORT TODAY BBC WORLD NEWS AMERICA HARDTALK 9:00 PM MSNBC ANDREA MITCHELL REPORTS 9:30 PM 10:00 PM MSNBC NEWSNATION 11:00 PM 11:30 PM FOOD NETWORK EXTREME SPORTS OSN SPORTS 2 KHLOE AND LAMAR MEXICAN MADE EASY MANTRACKER AFL PREMIERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS WORLD COMBAT LEAGUE FUTBOL MUNDIAL DRAGRACE HIGH SUPER LEAGUE ENFUSION SUPER LEAGUE CRIME AND PUNISHMENT CAFE RACER KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS SNAPPED ICE LOVES COCO SHAKE IT UP JONAS COW AND CHICKEN EXTREME ENGINEERING GOURMET FARMER SCOUTED SO RANDOM CODENAME: KIDS NEXT DOOR GOOD LUCK CHARLIE BEN 10 WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE ASIA BUSINESS REPORT MSNBC THE DYLAN RATIGAN SHOW KIM POSSIBLE CHOWDER NEWS CHANNELS EASY CHINESE: SAN FRANCISCO DENNIS NILSEN BBC WORLD NEWS KIDS CHANNELS REZA, SPICE PRINCE OF INDIA THE FBI FILES KINGS OF CONSTRUCTION MSNBC MARTIN BASHIR FOOD NETWORK CHALLENGE IRON CHEF AMERICA ULTIMATE SURVIVAL ASIA BUSINESS REPORT SPORT TODAY E! The auction totalled $23 million and set records for a dozen other artists. An oil on canvas, the 1944 “La revolte des contraires” is a vortex of canary yellow rhomboids, rippled by undulating black lines and pocked by eruptions of prismatic colours. “The lines serve as a skeleton of the painting; the thin washes create an ethereal feeling, almost like it’s levitating,” Garza said. “The outburst of colours are almost volcanic.” In Matta’s eyes, the painting represented a mental landscape, he added. “It is surrealism through abstraction.” “The liquid drip in the painting is part of his breakthrough,” he said of Matta, whose students in New York included Jackson Pollock, who won later renown for forsaking brushes for drip painting. For a Latin American artist, the $5 million price of “La revolte des contraires” ranks as the third highest sold at international auction, Christie’s said. Only Rufino Tamayo’s “Trovador,” sold for $7.2 million at Christie’s in 2008, and “Roots,” a painting by Frida Kahlo sold at Sotheby’s in 2006 for $5.6 million, have fetched more. avante-garde, Christie’s says. ARTIST ROBERTO MATTA’S PAINTING LA REVOLTE DES CONTRAIRES Expo on Mayans leaves questions of timing, focus hanging Maya 2012: Lords of Time, opens with a teasing potpourri of tabloid headlines, movie disasters and television news reports invoking the imminent catastrophe (though the exhibition is expected to remain open after the world ends, until mid-January 2013) A ceramic censer lid with founder portrait on display at the Maya 2012: Lords of Time. EDWARD ROTHSTEIN NYT SYNDICATE ND it shall come to pass that when the 13th baktun comes to an end, so will the world. Everything, even the entombed red-cinnabarcoated kings, shall be destroyed in an apocalypse. So it has been foretold – and so many believe – by the ancient Maya calendar; even Maya deities like the jade-haired maize god and the goggleeyed storm god must submit. In Arabic numerals the final date would be represented this way: 13.0.0.0.0. Talk about bad luck. According to the Penn Museum here, which has mounted a major exhibition that manages to be at once tantalising, illuminating and frustrating, that day is close at hand. Though many experts calculate it to be December 21, 2012, the museum curators believe it is December 23, 2012. And this show, Maya 2012: Lords of Time, opens with a teasing potpourri of tabloid headlines, movie disasters and television news reports invoking the imminent catastrophe (though the exhibition is expected to remain open after the world ends, until mid-January 2013). It’s a setup, of course, because we soon learn that the Maya civilisation (which once extended over modern-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and El Salvador; built major cities by 500 BC; and reached its peak before A.D. 900) had no such idea. In fact, the Maya Long Count Calendar, the focus of the show’s first part, has no end (and no real beginning). Maya kings erected monuments to themselves using that eternal calendar, combining an immense sense of centrality with an immense sense of immensity. In the exhibition the apocalyptic premise is so easily overturned that it seems A A jade carving of the maize God encapsulated in a seashell. Visitors at the exhibition. like a straw man, a pretext to draw crowds. The theme is also resurrected at the end: The Maya didn’t believe that the world would end in 2012, we are reminded. And we are asked to vote: “Do you?” I had other questions. And they had nothing to do with the end of the world but with a civilisation that left behind ruins of pyramids, sculptured monuments called stelae and populations scattered over Central America whose languages and cultures can be traced back a millennium to when the Maya reigned supreme. The overall sensation created here, though, is of mystery. Given the length of time that the Maya thrived – their classic period was AD 250 to 900, predating the Aztec and Inca empires – it is astonishing how little is known about them. It is also surprising how much has been pieced together only in the last 50 years, with University of Pennsylvania scholars and the Penn Museum playing central roles, excavating Copan, Honduras (with the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History). That involvement is the reason that the exhibition is mounted here, though many of its objects are copies, the originals being too heavy or fragile to travel. The show’s main curator, Loa P Traxler, is co-author, with Robert Sharer, of an essential history, The Ancient Maya. One of her co-curators, Kate Quinn, the museum’s director of exhibitions, has introduced clever interactive displays. One touch screen translates familiar dates into the exotic Maya calendar; another lets you explore the extraordinary Copan ruins. As for artifacts, one jade carving almost tenderly shows the maize god nestled in a seashell, as water and earth join to yield fertile promise. A mysteriously etched skull from the seventh century shows two lords engaged in an unexplained “calendar ritual.” Most powerful are the hieroglyphic carvings, in which human faces, weapons and ornaments seem manically compressed to fill rectangular molds, saturating available space with bulbous images. Some of the figures are fearsome. Others seem almost comic: When we see a seventh-century image of the Copan dynasty founder wearing a mask of goggles and a set of fake teeth, we are told that this is meant to invoke Tlaloc, the storm god of central Mexico, but we suspect some whimsy at work. Did the Maya have a sense of humour? If so, it’s not apparent elsewhere. Stingray spines here, found in fifth-century tombs, were used for bloodletting ceremonies. Blood-coloured cinnabar A ceramic censer lid with royal figure holding flint. was used to coat the dead and is found throughout the royal tombs. And perhaps because of the hieroglyphs, the sense here is of taut compression and not a little ruthlessness. One altar (a reproduction) pictures an entire dynasty of kings, created for Copan’s last ruler. A dead jaguar was interred to represent each ruler. The kings used that creature’s fearsome persona as well, perhaps to command the human chattel who created the pyramids that archaeologists have been excavating in the Honduran jungles. Partly because of the show’s theme, the emphasis here tends to be on Maya culture’s rational aspect. We learn that the Maya are best known for their calendar. But nothing revealed here about it is particularly astounding, and an astronomer interviewed in a video kiosk, Anthony F Aveni, points out that the Maya did not even have a telescope. Yet the result is intriguing. The Maya typically used a base of 20 for counting (as we use a base of 10). Their numerals have a systematic simplicity: a vertical bar was a sign for 5 and dots adjacent to it added 1 each – the bar representing, perhaps, a flat outstretched hand, and the dots extended digits for counting. And just as we use days, weeks, months, years, the Maya used cyclical calendar categories. What happens in December is that the 13th baktun in this cycle of history comes to an end, and since a baktun lasts about 144,000 days, this turn of the odometer is fairly dramatic. That’s about it. The calendar’s importance turns out to be not that it predicts the future, but that, with its patterns and repetitions, it was crucial in deciphering Maya glyphs and their account of the past. But even the written record has a limit. After the ninth century the historical narrative breaks off. Royal monuments stopped appearing. The population dropped significantly, perhaps as a result of drought, disease or warfare. There was “evidence for the complete breakdown of the political system.” It came to be called the Collapse. Then, some six centuries later, when the Maya were no longer a force to be reckoned with, they were dealt another blow with the arrival of the Spanish. Smallpox epidemics broke out. Several thousand bark-paper books were burned; only a few survive, some shown here. Yet once we pass through this historical account, we feel as if we had still been left with too little, when we were promised so much. What were Maya religious beliefs? How did the Maya wield political power? How did they wage war? How did they transmit knowledge? What was the nature of their rituals? Those questions aren’t really raised, and we are not sure why, except perhaps that some might have unsavoury answers. There seems to be a persistent eagerness at the exhibition to spin Maya culture, exaggerating its accomplishments and ignoring shadows. Maya script, we read, for example, “is now revealed as the world’s most complex writing system.” Really? On what grounds? And what about human sacrifice? “Though the Maya practiced human sacrifice, there is no evidence of mass killings, as attributed to the Aztecs, or as depicted in the Hollywood movie Apocalypto. Not terribly illuminating for the only mention of the subject: The Maya practiced human sacrifice, but less often than Mel Gibson thinks. Yet what did human sacrifice entail, and what beliefs were behind it? And the Maya Collapse, we are informed all too quickly, should not be considered a collapse because Maya descendants still live in the region today. “Like other Native American groups,” we read, “they seek social justice, prosperity and political participation in the modern countries in which they live.” Perhaps, but like other institutions that show artifacts associated with American Indians, the Penn Museum here invokes platitudes in discussing them, as if repaying some debt, and worrying about portraying a negative image. A large concluding part of the exhibition is devoted to contemporary Maya culture; in interviews Maya recite almost formulaic comments about efforts to reconstitute their lost identity. But if the end of days really does turn out to be imminent, shouldn’t we be better prepared to encounter what the ancient Maya deities have in store? Carved masks. The story of young Ellis on his search for a parental role model borrows from the sacrifice and friendship themes of Mark Twain’s classic Huckleberry Finn, whose fatherless main character embarks on a Mississippi odyssey of self-discovery AP HE Cannes film festival wrapped up the movies in competition wading deep in the Mississippi river with Mud, a heartwrenching, Mark Twain-influenced tale of a teenage boy searching for the meaning of life in a harsh world and starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. With snake bites, shootouts, and a happy ending, it is proudly — even blatantly — inspired by the bard of the Mississippi. Stellar performances from 15-year-old Tye Sheridan — who starred in last year’s Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life — and McConaughey separate it from a pack of films in competition set in the colourful American South. Director David Nichols’ third film was the culmination of his film work so far and a decade of effort. The 33-year-old managed to scrape enough money together thanks to the critical success of his previous two pictures: 2007’s Shotgun Stories, and last year’s award-winning Take Shelter. The story of young Ellis on his search for a parental role model borrows from the sacrifice and friendship themes of Twain’s classic Huckleberry Finn, whose fatherless main character embarks on a Mississippi odyssey of self-discovery. Nichols said Twain’s bittersweet tales immortalising the “mile-wide tide” of the Mississippi river T A still from the film Mud have stayed with him since he first read them when he was young. He’s frankly unapologetic about the obvious influence: “If you’re going to steal from someone, steal from someone really intelligent. And I stole from Mark Twain.” Young actor Jacob Lofland, who played Ellis’ best friend, Neckbone, testified to Twain’s influence. Tutored on the book, Lofland recognised parts of the work in the films script. He said, only semi-jokingly, “I found out that a lot of stuff (from the novel) just wandered onto the script. We had a word with (Nichols) about that.” McConaughey plays the eponymous character, the woebegone Mud, who is hiding on a Mississippi island from vengeful bounty hunters after shooting a man in Texas. Madly in love with Witherspoon’s unreliable, smoldering blond Juniper he enlists the support of Ellis and Neckbone to help win her love. McConaughey’s performance has wowed critics at the festival. The Oscar-winning Witherspoon, who spent an hour in a hot, packed room with journalists despite being heavily pregnant, was born in Louisiana and took the relatively small role because it felt like home to her. “There are very few movies about the American South that are accurate,” she said. Mud — the Cannes’s official competition’s last entry — joined Lawless and The Paperboy on the list of Southern films at the festival. Nichols explained the phenomenon simply: “Well, Southerners are good storytellers.” HILOH JoliePitt and Suri Cruise are both daughters of huge Hollywood stars — but the similarities stop there! The shoot demanded him to make an egg-omelette and flip it over multiple times. Alas, Sharman didn’t even know how to break an egg for starters.
