Cannes Film Festival abuzz as dark tales shine While Cannes thrives on Hollywood hype and celebrity, it also has a reputation for showcasing serious, hard-hitting dramas made by respected directors for little money REUTERS HE Cannes film festival is buzzing this year with a string of hit movies in the official lineup. The unseasonably cold, wet weather has done little to dampen spirits among the famously picky critics and journalists on the French Riviera to interview, photograph and film everyone from A-list celebrities to obscure auteur directors. While the distractions for the 4,000strong media presence seem endless amid stunts, parties and big movie deals, the backbone of the festival remains the main competition, this year comprising 22 movies with a strong US presence. But it is two European film makers, both previous winners of the coveted Palme d’Or for best picture, who have set the pace as Cannes hit its halfway point. Austrian Michael Haneke, who won in 2009 with The White Ribbon and wowed audiences four years earlier with Hidden, has done it again this year with Love (Amour), a somber, French-language drama about an elderly couple facing death. While Cannes thrives on Hollywood hype and celebrity, it also has a reputation for showcasing serious, hard-hitting dramas made by respected directors for little money. Once they wiped away the tears, critics gave Love a five-star reception for its unflinching portrayal of a woman’s illness and death, and how she and her devoted husband cope with the final weeks. Jonathan Romney of Screen International called it a “masterpiece” and many Cannes veterans have made it the movie to beat at this year’s festival. “Amour is surely now the early favourite T (From left) Actors Jason Schwartzman, Bruce Willis, director Wes Anderson, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, and Bill Murray of Moonrise Kingdom. for the Palme d’Or,” wrote Donald Clarke of the Irish Times. “If we were previously in any doubt, Haneke is confirmed as the premiere European director of his generation.” Its two stars, both in their 80s, have also basked in glory for moving portrayals of old age, the ravages of illness and facing one’s mortality. Romanian director Cristian Mungiu’s Beyond the Hills, another popular entry this year, is a disturbing tale based on a true story of a young woman staying at a remote monastery whose violent fits are interpreted as signs of the devil. An exorcism is performed, but the wellmeaning priest is in danger of doing more harm than good in Mungiu’s examination of the clash between the religious and secular and between earthly and spiritual love. His 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days scooped the Palme d’Or in 2007, and an informal poll of critics published at the festival puts him neck-and-neck with Haneke at the head of the field. French director Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone, starring Marion Cotillard as a Director Thomas Vinterberg (centre) with cast members of the film Jagten (The Hunt). Marineland worker who loses her legs in an accident, packed an emotional punch that resonated with many, though not all, viewers. Danish child abuse drama The Hunt, from Thomas Vinterberg and starring the impressive Mads Mikkelsen as a man wrongly accused and ostracised, is also seen as a contender. Wes Anderson’s opening comedy Moonrise Kingdom starring Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and two young stars, was an upbeat start to this year’s festival, although it may be too light-hearted to win over the Cannes jury. The violent prohibition-era movie Lawless, featuring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain, fell slightly flat in the eyes of many critics. Willis, Murray, Hardy, Chastain and Sean Penn have all walked the red carpet so far, and still expected in Cannes are Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Kanye West. However, what many don’t realise is that animals can also work to your advantage and each one represents some positive quality. The Frog: The frog is considered a symbol of luck in many cultures. These amphibians are also known to bring fertility, abundance, and happiness to many. The creature is said to be endowed with magical powers and due to the very large number of eggs it lays at a time, considered as a fertility symbol. People often wear amulets with the animal on their arms for its sheer power. In Egypt, frogs were so important, that they were often embalmed when they died and Italians believed it brought good luck to the home. The Tiger: This endangered animal may be dwindling but is one of the most respected animals in India and China. The animal is believed to provide protection from loss of precious goods and property. It represents power and speed. Known for their ferocious nature, tigers were considered as symbols of protection with the Chinese featuring the animal on children’s shoes so as to frighten away evil spirits which mothers believed were hovering around their kids. The Horse or the Unicorn: The white horse is treated as a symbol of good fortune in many cultures. The Unicorn a mythical creature is said to help dreams become a reality and bring about love and harmony in the world. The Celts revered the white horse and reserved them for their leaders and warfare. It symbolises success, loyalty, courage and speed and is said to enhance one’s career. A walking or running horse indicates a rapid climb to success. Pet chips have become big business, but do they work? A dog receiving a low-cost chip insertion during pet safety day organised by the city, in New York. NANCY M BETTER NYT SYNIDICATE ONNIE is missing” blared the email subject line. A 2-yearold female pit bull weighing 55 pounds, with gray and white markings, she was last seen on the corner of Maple Avenue and Myrtle Street in my community, wearing a chain collar. “I am asking for your help in finding my lost dog,” her owner pleaded. I immediately felt a pang of anxiety. And then one of confusion. Exactly what was I supposed to do with this information? It appeared on my smartphone because I recently got a new puppy and, while Riley was under the ether being spayed, the veterinarian’s assistant recommended inserting a chip for identification purposes. My previous dog’s identification had consisted of a nylon collar and metal tag; the chip sounded Big Brother-ish, if A screen grab of the lost pet app by not unnecessary. But the assistant HomeAgain. assured me that “everyone” does it these days, so that lost or stolen pets can be including membership programmes and readily identified if brought to a shelter social networking. B What was once a simple process – inject a tiny transponder the size of a grain of rice between a pet’s shoulder blades and pay a one-time registration fee – has become a big business, with annual charges for benefits ranging from online distribution of customised lost-pet notices to discounted flights for missing pets found hundreds of miles away According to the American Humane Association, last year more than 7 million dogs and cats went missing; only about 17 percent of lost dogs and 2 percent of lost cats find their way back from shelters to their original owners. More than 10 million pets are euthanised every year because their owners can’t be found. HomeAgain’s website has a ticker counting pet recoveries tracked to chip technology; as of late April, it clocked 1,016,843 such reunions. But not all pet owners are sold on chips. Mary Ellen Feeley, agreed to have a chip inserted in her Labrador retriever, Maggie. When she recently added a golden retriever, Dusty, to her household, she opted out. “I thought the chip was more of a scare tactic when we got Maggie,” she said. “I have never heard of any of my friends relying on the chip to find their dog. The collar tag, as antiquated as it might be, seems like a reliable methodology.” Most recoveries are still done by collar tag, said Tom Sharp, an American Kennel Club official. “It’s more likely that your dog will wind up on your neighbour property than in the local animal shelter,” he said. “But a chip is still the only way to permanently identify your dog as belonging to you.” Since 1995, the kennel club has offered its own nonprofit chip service, Companion Animal Recovery. Until 2005, the service had a partnership with HomeAgain, which produced the chips; when that contract expired, the two organisations parted ways. “They wanted to increase their revenue through annual fees and add-ons, so we split up,” Sharp said. Today the kennel-club service charges a one-time fee of $19.95, which enrolls a pet in its database for life (HomeAgain charges $39 for enrollment). Kennel club customers can also pay a one-time fee of $15 for lifetime membership in its lost-pet recovery programme, which includes a 24-hour hot line. HomeAgain charges $17.99 a year for its package of benefits; its newest feature is an iPhone and Android app that lets users upload photos of lost pets and delivers alerts with a bark or meow. Some pet owners find the alerts distressing and confess to not opening them or to unsubscribing from them. Others shrug them off. “I would rather get three emails a day about lost pets in my neighbourhood than 20 emails from stores I rarely shop at,” said Sharp of the kennel club. MacPhee acknowledges that not every HomeAgain customer appreciates such services; after the free first year, about half decline to renew the membership . But he anticipates increasing the PetRescuer network to 3 million people by 2013 – partly by enrolling people who do not actually own pets. (They can submit their email and ZIP code and request to be notified about lost pets within 5, 10 or 25 miles of their home.) “Early triage is the No. 1 thing that gets pets found,” he said. “The distribution of information is really what helps find your animal.” Yet some pet experts think the chips provide a false sense of security. Claudia Devita, a Fairfield County, Conn., breeder, urges clients to understand the system’s limitations. “There is no quick cure to finding a lost dog, even with a chip,” she said. “Your dog has to be lucky enough to be returned to a place that has a scanner to check the number on the chip and then a way of contacting you. The only foolproof way to keep your pet safe is with making sure the dog is either walked on a leash or kept inside a yard with a fence.” Indeed, unreliable or incompatible scanner technology remains a nagging issue for chip providers. A chip is essentially a tiny transponder that uses radio frequency waves to transmit data, including registration and vendor contact information. Each chip can be activated by a handheld scanner, but competing companies use different frequencies to send signals. Several chip vendors now produce universal scanners and give them to animal shelters at low cost or free, but there is no guarantee that a particular chip will be recognised. “The government has not mandated that all pet organisations acquire universal scanners,” said Sharp of the American Kennel Club. “So it’s still possible that a pet’s chip won’t be read properly if he turns up at a shelter.” As for me, I can’t bring myself to delete or ignore the lost-pet alerts that pop up regularly on my smartphone. The latest one: “Farrah is missing,” described a 4year-old female cat, weighing 12 pounds, with a black-and-white tuxedo coat. Her mug shot was adorable, and the online map showed a little green marker with a tiny paw print near my neighbourhood. I’m rooting for her safe return. 36 Thursday, May 24, 2012 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 8:30 pm BBC World: HARDTALK 8:10 pm Cartoon Network: COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG 10:00 pm OSN Sports 2: GOLFING WORLD 10:00 pm Discovery HD Showcase: STORM SURFERS TV PRIME TIME GUIDE 7:00 PM 7:30 PM 8:00 PM 8:30 PM BBC WORLD OSN NEWS CARTOON NETWORK DISNEY CHANNEL WORLD BUSINESS REPORT LIVE MSNBC THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW HERO 108 GOOD LUCK CHARLIE SPORT TODAY BBC WORLD NEWS AMERICA HARDTALK SCOOBY-DOO! Art guide THE eyes of the global art world are fixed on Hong Kong - for now. Hong Kong’s art scene has been expanding for the past few years, but this week’s flurry of high profile international gallery openings alongside the city’s annual art fair has brought a hype and frenzy unlike anything seen before. But it also comes at a time when Chinese growth is slowing, raising concerns about sustainability. Auction house Sotheby’s official opening of its 15,000 square foot gallery space on Friday comes after blue-chip galleries such as London based Simon Lee, Shanghai’s Pearl Lam, Parisian dealer Galerie Perrotin and Paris gallery NeC opened earlier this week. Hong Kong’s Art HK fair, now owned by international art show Art Basel, which also holds an annual show in Miami, has attracted close to 70,000 people. Even though art excitement appears palpable in the financial city, local gallerists and international art consultants are warning that the market feels a little frothy. “Whilst this hype brings an air of excitement to the city’s art scene, it’s very telling of the possible fragility of the market and whether it’s sustainable,” said Natasha Whiffin, gallery manager at Saamlung in Hong Kong. The rate at which galleries have set up shop here is almost unheard of in the recent history of world arts hubs such as London, Paris, New York, she added. Dance centre nurtures two choreographers The Baryshnikov Arts Centre will present two budding companies, led by Batten Bland and John Heginbotham, a longtime member of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Both are part of his centre's esteemed, if under-the-radar, residency programme, which provides space and time (roughly three weeks per artist) to develop work John Heginbotham Stefanie Batten Bland GIA KOURLAS NYT SYNDICATE HAT would be the biggest wish of a choreographer about to start a company? There’s something even more valuable than a blank cheque: the support of Mikhail Baryshnikov. And this month two choreographers are lucky enough to have it. When Stefanie Batten Bland, whose dance lineage includes performing with Bill T Jones and Pina Bausch, decided that she wanted to return to New York after living and working in Europe, Baryshnikov asked her a simple question: What do you need? “I said, ‘A home,”’ Batten Bland recalled. “He said: ‘OK, you have a home. Now what do you need?’ I didn’t really know what to say next. I often don’t know what to say in front of him. It’s terrible.” Even worldly dancers have trouble separating Baryshnikov, the person, from the figure who works tirelessly to give dance a prominent place in culture. The Baryshnikov Arts Centre will present two budding companies, led by Batten Bland and John Heginbotham, a longtime member of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Both are part of his centre's esteemed, if under-the-radar, residency programme, which provides space and time (roughly three weeks per artist) to develop work. Generally there is no stipend. In an interview at his Centre, Baryshnikov spoke about the obstacles choreographers face in forming companies. “It’s not a secret that the first year is probably the most difficult,” he said. Both John and Stefanie are very interesting people and highly experienced, and I thought we must support emerging companies like that. Their pedigree is kind of impeccable. That’s how people start to choreograph. “What would Merce have been without working with Martha? Or Paul?” he asked. Or Martha Graham without Ted Shawn and Ruth St Denis? Baryshnikov’s passing-thebaton references were to Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor and Graham, and Batten Bland and Heginbotham’s leading- W John Heginbotham’s Closing Bell at the Baryshnikov Arts Centre in New York. They have to do their fundraising. They have to hustle. Although it’s the most exciting part of the emerging company: Just to start. Because there’s such adrenaline going, and they are so fired up. They need this help.” Within the centre's multidisciplinary residency programme, which supports up to 30 artists a year, Batten Bland and Heginbotham are also recipients of an award from the Jerome Robbins Foundation’s New Essential Works Programme. For Heginbotham and Batten Bland, the partnership with the foundation has resulted in two years of support, including the residencies, public showings and $10,000 per award. After their first residencies in 2010 they presented new works in an intimate studio setting at the Centre. This year they will show their dances in Jerome Robbins Theatre. Heginbotham, for one, is flabbergasted. “And it’s Misha,” he said of Baryshnikov. “I’m sure everybody says that all the time, but it’s still surreal. I remember when I saw Turning Point in the den of my friend’s house in Alaska. I remember all of us going to see White Nights. I remember watching Dance in America. So now that’s the person who is the reason that I have all of these opportunities? How is that possible? It is surreal and beautiful, and I appreciate it so much.” Both choreographers will show the dances they created in their first residency (Terra Firma for Batten Bland and Closing Bell for Heginbotham), along with two new works. In A Place of Sun, Batten Bland explores ideas about how entities adhere to stressed environments and either move forward or perish. The work for six incorporates egg-shaped sculptures by the visual artist Benjamin Heller that are large enough for the dancers to slip in and out of. “There’s something so comfortable and uncomfortable about being inside of them, and I think that’s a great experience we go through in life,” she said. “There are a lot of things that comfort us and might keep us where we are. But you have to leave at some point and move on.” Baryshnikov is drawn to Batten Bland’s flamboyance. “She’s very showy but full of excitement and love for what she’s doing and brings a little of that European sensibility about theatricality,” he said. “She likes to do a piece about something, not that it’s necessarily narrative.” He called Heginbotham a “gentle soul” who projects a friendly and funny personality on the surface but underneath exudes seriousness. And neither does he shy from theatricality in Twin, Heginbotham’s latest dance set to music by Aphex Twin. “I did do a little research on twins,” Heginbotham said. “I don’t want to do a piece about that Diane Arbus photograph, and I don’t want to do a piece about The Shining. But I am attracted to creepy material, and twins are creepy. There’s a phenomenon called a vanishing twin, where essentially one twin, a dominant twin, consumes the other. That’s somewhere in this piece.” The spirit he is hoping for is, as he put it, is “dark, funny and a little bit sick.” In terms of the residency programme not all of the works developed in the studios end up on its stages. But during the spring season, six out of 13 artists whom the Centre presented – including Young Jean Lee, Pontus Lidberg, Nelly van Bommel and Daniel Zippi – have or will accomplish both. Since 2005, when the programme began, participants have included Elevator Repair Service, Sarah Michelson, Annie-B Parson, Miguel Gutierrez and Rashaun Mitchell. Last year there were 26 participants; this year 14 are scheduled through July, with more coming in the fall. “We don’t have a specific policy” on how residencies are granted, Baryshnikov said: “We take each case individually. I think it’s more humane.” Applications are continually accepted. And, yes, Baryshnikov watches videos too. “Of course,” he said. “For hours, for hours. But, you know, that’s what it is.” For the time being the residency programme is what it is too. Baryshnikov has no ambition to turn residencies into producing opportunities for the Centre. “It does not matter,” he said. “In fact we are providers more than we are producers. There’s nothing wrong with that.” Thursday, May 24, 2012 QT SPOTLIGHT ON CANNES LEONARDO DiCaprio is renting out one of his three Malibu estates for $150,000 per month. But there is little middle ground when it comes to the reception of his films. Seidl tends to be condemned as a misanthrope who goes to unseemly lengths to prove the depths of human misery or hailed as a maestro of discomfort whose taste for confrontation masks a seriousness of purpose and a measure of compassion. Last at the festival here with Import/Export (2007), a bleak tale of lost souls making their way through the economic backwaters of the new Europe, Seidl returns to the Cannes competition this year with Paradise: Love, another story of exploitation across borders. The protagonist, Teresa (the stage veteran Margarethe Tiesel), is a fleshy, middle-aged Viennese woman on vacation at a resort in Kenya, where young, lithe local m e n known a s T 39 Swift dating Foster The People frontman? DiCaprio to lease Malibu home Scene unscene www.qatar-tribune.com beach boys stake out the water’s edge, selling trinkets — and themselves — to Western pleasure seekers. The movie, which gives an entirely new, queasy meaning to the Swahili phrase “hakuna matata,” is the first of Seidl’s Paradise trilogy, each one subtitled for a Christian virtue. The next two installments, Hope (about Teresa’s sister, a flagellant on a religious pilgrimage), and Faith (about Teresa’s daughter, an overweight teenager at a diet camp), have been completed and will make their debuts at film festivals this fall. Speaking in German through a translator, Seidl discussed Love and the Paradise project in an interview at a reception following his film’s premiere recently. Q. You started out making one film — how did you end up with a trilogy? A. The original plan was to make a film with three episodes, each about a different woman, two middle-aged sisters and the 13-year-old daughter of one of them — you see them together at the beginning. They each go on holiday, each looking for love, fulfilment, but in different ways. In the script the three stories aren’t interwoven, and we shot each one separately. I try whenever possible to shoot chronologically, which gives me the freedom to change the storyline, invent other characters. During editing, I attempted to interweave those three stories into a single film, but the result was a six-hour film that didn’t satisfy me; individual scenes that were intense and emotiona l l y strong were weakened. That’s when I decided to make separate films. Why did you choose to set the film in Kenya, and could you tell us a bit about the research process and shooting conditions there? I chose Kenya because it shares with Europe a past that unites them: Africa is also a divided continent with enormous internal tensions. Two years before shooting, I started going to Kenya to cast the beach boys, research their life. I never considered actors; I wanted people who really came from this milieu. As you see in the film, it wasn’t hard to meet them. What was difficult was finding people who would be as authentic as possible on camera. During shooting, several beach boys we were working with were arrested, and they actually have beach boy associations, who were against us because they suspected that we wouldn’t present a flattering picture of them. We had to work to get them on our side. Your cast is made up of professionals and nonprofessionals. Did you direct them differently? I don’t distinguish between actors and nonactors. Each scene is improvised because I don’t want them to have a pre-existing idea of what we should attain. During the very long preparation, I get to know the actors, and it creates a climate of mutual trust. You instill in them an idea of the kind of film that you’re seeking. I always speak to them individually, telling each one what I’m looking for. The other actors in the scene never know what’s coming. What can we expect from the next two parts, and what is the significance of the overall title and the subtitles? The second film, Faith, is much more difficult: it’s claustrophobic, a chamber piece. The first one has an element of humour but the second one is more severe. The third film, Hope, is again lighter; it deals with young girls in puberty and treats them with a great deal of tenderness. All three women are in search of their personal paradise. The word also has a Biblical sense, of course, as the original state of constant happiness, and interestingly, it’s also a term that is overused, misused, flaunted in the tourist industry. Love is the starting point, the basis of this first film. If this woman didn’t go in search of love, no exploitation would take place. Matteo Garrone Reality TV, celebrity obsession hit film festival screens REUTERS BSESSION with a celebrity is the focus of Italian director Matteo Garrone’s new movie Reality at the Cannes film festival, one of two pictures in the lineup exploring the corrosive power of instant fame and the desire to be watched. Garrone is best known for his last film, the gritty Gomorrah about a Naples crime syndicate. But with Reality he switches gears, creating a modern day fairy tale whose protagonist’s soul is slowly and inexorably eroded by the lure of fame. The second film, screening outside the main competition on Saturday, is Antiviral, the debut feature of Brandon Cronenberg, son of Canadian director David O Brandon Cronenberg Cronenberg. Its plot follows a clinic worker who sells fans injections of viruses harvested from sick celebrities. In Reality, Lorenzo is an affable Naples fishmonger and loving father and husband whose family convinces him to try out for the reality TV show Big Brother. Garrone chose as his main actor Aniello Arena, whom he discovered working in a prison theatre troupe. Arena, who is still serving his term, was allowed out of prison during the days to film but returned to custody in the evenings. He was not allowed to accompany the rest of the cast to Cannes. “Never give up your dreams!” Lorenzo is told by the television crew who audition him for a spot on the show. Lorenzo is convinced it’s only a matter of time before he receives the call saying he’s been picked, and his status in his small community gets an instant lift. As the days drag on and the call doesn’t come, however, Lorenzo’s obsession grows, and his hold on reality wavers. He starts to believe that crew from the TV show are spying on him, to determine if he would be a good pick for the show. “What are they thinking about me?” he worries in his mind, in which he already plays a starring role. He sells his fish business so he’ll have money to fix up their home. Garrone is a fan of long pans in his latest film, which capture the beauty of a crumbling Naples while at the same time adding to the sense of voyeurism. The movie opens with a sweep of the southern port city seen from above, gradually focusing in on a golden carriage drawn by two white horses and a footman in red breeches. When a bride and groom emerge, we see them enter their version of a fairy tale wedding - presided over by the host of Big Brother. As for Cronenberg, celebrity obsession is part of something bigger in human society. “I think that world is fascinating, both because of how grotesque it can be and how much it’s really just one version of a much broader human impulse to deify and eviscerate,” the young director said. 40 Thursday, May 24, 2012 BOLLYWOOD www.qatar-tribune.com Scene unscene After cricket, acting a luxury: Preity Mallika meets Jackie Chan, again PREITY Zinta, who co-owns Indian Premier League franchise Kings XI Punjab and has been busy cheering her team at the matches, is back to acting, and is loving it. “Back on the sets of Ishkq In Paris!
