She’s an outdoorsy kind of person and maybe not entirely comfortable in the limelight. It was difficult to find interviews with her. I think she’s a little camera shy. She was a little beat up by the media and the British public for a while.” Is she an admirer of the duchess? “AsanactorIhavetogowiththeperson in the script,” Smart says, “and I liked that person very much. This film treats Camilla very sympathetically.” “Despite everything that happened, (she and Prince Charles) obviously loved each other for 40 years,” Smart says. “No matter how you feel about everything else, you’ve got to root for the fact that they’ve stuck it out and put up with a lot of abuse. Not that they didn’t makemistakes, perhaps, buttheydecided, ‘This is who we are and this is what we want. We’re happy, and please be happy for us.”’ Smart, who completed the film earlier this year, is speaking by telephone from the set of the NBC series Harry’s Law. She will appear with series star Kathy Bates in this season’s first three episodes, and her role may become a recurring character. Inthecourseofherthree-decadecareer, Smart has moved effortlessly from sweet to madcap to tough to villainous. Audiences may first have noticed her as naive office manager Charlene Frazier Stillfield on Designing Women (19861991) or as the female serial killer in Overkill: The Aileen Wuornos Story (1992). Fans of 24’’ (2006-2007) will recogniseher as semi-nutty Martha Logan, the wife of the nefarious President Logan (Gregory Itzin). While filming William & Catherine: A Royal Romance, Smart had only one concern.“IhopeCamilladidn’tmindmyplaying her,” she says. “But we’re not seeing herinsituationswhereshehastodealwith painful things.” Princess Diana (Lesley Harcourt) is seen only in flashback. Instead the film focuses on Prince William’s college years, when he met his bride-to-be at St Andrew’s University. “I Jean Smart A still showing Jean Smart (left) and Victor Garber in the TV movie William & Catherine: A Royal Romance. As an actor, I have to go with the person in the script, and I liked that person very much. This film treats Camilla very sympathetically. Despite everything that happened, (she and Prince Charles) obviously loved each other for 40 years — JEAN SMART ON PLAYING CAMILLA PARKER BOWLES, DUCHESS OF CORNWALL “It helped a lot that William sort of accepted Camilla,” says writer/producer/director Linda Yellen, who also wrote and produced The Royal Romance of Charles and Diana (1982) and met with Princess Diana three times, in a separate interview. “I think maybe the tragedy between Charles and Diana was that they thought they could marry and each would make theotherintosomethingelse,”Yellensays. “It was never going to work.” It’s tricky, of course, to make a movie aboutcurrentlylivingpeoplethatrecounts recent events that happened in the absence of movie cameras. The film is not about the relationship between Charles and Camilla, but inevitably that relationship is a part of the story. Yellen has a generally favourable view of the often-controversial Camilla. “She is a maligned person in the press,” the filmmaker says. ‘But if you watch her progression since she’s been back with Charles, recognising her place next to him, she also has gotten more conventionally styled and attractive, although she doesn’t care about those things. Although Smart insists that she has never paid especial attention to the British royal family, she understands that such is not the case with many of her compatriots. “Americans have a little bit of royalty envy,” the actress says. “We all want people to look up to, as much as we tear them down.” Smart, who has been married to actor From left: A still showing Alice St Clair (Catherine Middleton), Jane Alexander (Queen Elizabeth), Dan Amboyer (Prince William), Stanley Eldridge (Prince Harry), Victor Garber (Prince Charles), Mark Penfold (Prince Philip) and Jean Smart (Camilla Parker Bowles), in the TV movie William & Catherine: A Royal Romance. Startalk Lifeline Richard Gilliland for 24 years, has a son, Connor,21,andherdaughter,Bonnie,is3. Smart and Gilliland adopted her in 2009. Smart made such films as The Brady Bunch Movie (1995), Snow Day (2000), Sweet Home Alabama (2002) and Garden State (2004) while raising her son, but she spent much of those years working in television. “Sitcoms have the best schedule,” she says. “You’re home every night.” It didn’t hurt that she was good at them, earning two Emmy Awards as Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy SeriesforFrasier(2000-2001)andathird as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Samantha Who? (2008). “Dramas like Harry’s Law are 12-hour days,” Smart says. “But, if you’re not the star of the show, you don’t work every day. You can still have a life.” “Theatre is the hardest,” she adds. “You’re not home at dinnertime or story time. Yet that’s my first love.” Smart grew up in Seattle and started out in regional Theatre. She reports that she hopes to return to the stage later this year. “I’ve just been offered a play in Los Angeles,” she says, “and I’m being considered for one in New York.” Also on deck is a supporting role in Great Hope Springs, a film comedy starring Meryl Streep. “I play Meryl’s best friend,” Smart says. “She’s doing the film with Tommy Lee Jones.” Somehavesaidthattherearemoreroles for 50-plus women these days, as the baby boomers age. Smart doesn’t see it, though. “Not really,” the actress says. “No, unfortunately.” Nonetheless, she lives in hope of better things. “Maybe advertisers will realise that we baby boomers have a lot of money,” Smart says, “and that they no longer have to go after the teenage dollar. I never had any money when I was a teenager.” Lindsay Lohan sues Pitbull Family forced Zoe Saldana to learn driving LINDSAY Lohan has slapped Pitbull with a lawsuit for poking fun at her in the lyrics of his hit single Give Me Everything. In the song - co-written by Ne-Yo the hip-hop star rhymes, “Hustlers move aside, so I’m tiptoeing, keep flowin, I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan,” and the actress is upset with this. The lawsuit reads: “The lyrics, by virtue of its wide appeal, condemnation, excoriation, disparaging or defamatory statements by the defendants about the plaintiff are destined to do irreparable harm to the plaintiff.” The suit seeks an injunction to stop the broadcasting of the song and also seeks unspecified damages. AMERICAN actress Zoe Saldana has confessed that she learnt driving after her family intervened. “I was living in New York and I was lazy. And then I moved out to Los Angeles, five years ago to do a small movie called Avatar. I had a driver that would take me to set and to all my classes,” dailystar.co.uk quoted her as saying. “But once I stopped filming the movie, I was relying on the kindness of all my family and friends to take me to the supermarket. Then they got tired of it and I went to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). And I got my licence,” she added. 30 Tuesday, August 23, 2011 PLAYHOUSE www.qatar-tribune.com Beetle Bailey Blondie YESTERDAY’S ANSWER Popeye Spiderman LEARN ARABIC Azma Crisis Sunduq Fund Mumawwil Sponsor Zits Wahib Donor Hamla Campaign Musaadat Relief Dennis the Menace The Lockhorns Phone: 44666810 FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTACT US AT: Fax: 44654975 Post Box No: 23493 Email: admin@qatar-tribune.com S TA R TA L K ARIES [mar 21 – apr 19] Of course you’ll continue to party and have fun; however, as the month wears on, you want to get better organised! Tuesday, August 23, 2011 ART www.qatar-tribune.com 31 Carving alphabets on way to extinction Art guide TIM BROOKES, who is exhibiting his work at the Sachem Public Library gallery, in Holbrook, has trouble thinking of himself as an artist. “I tell people that my two worst subjects in high school were art and woodworking,”Brookes, 58, said. The director of the writing program at Champlain College in Burlington, he considers himself an author — having written 13 books on topics as varied as hospices and the history of the guitar — and “essentially a curious person.” But since 2008, when Brookes started making carvings on planks of curly maple as Christmas gifts for his family, his skill with a gouge and a small paintbrush has drawn attention in artistic circles as well as intellectual ones. The library exhibition, “Endangered Alphabets: An Essay in Wood,” on display until August 26, explores what has become his passion in recent years: preserving alphabets at risk of vanishing. The world has 6,000 to 7,000 languages, Brookes said, as many as half of which will be extinct by the end of this century. He estimates that there are fewer than 100 alphabets, many of which are also threatened with extinction. “Endangered Alphabets” offers a chance to appreciate the exotic nature of 14 of the alphabets as well as their visual beauty. IS SCULPTURE NOW JUST ANOTHER PRETTY FACE? The Bode Museum, Berlin, Germany. MICHAEL KIMMELMAN NYT SYNDICATE S OMETIMES on a whim I stop into the Bode Museum (Berlin, Germany) to commune with a tiny clay sculpture of John the Baptist. It’s in a corner of a nearly always empty room, a bone-white bust, pretty and as androgynous as mid-1970s Berlin-addled David Bowie. The saint’s upturned eyes glow in the hard light through tall windows. Attributed to the 15th-century Luccan artist Matteo Civitali, the sculpture is all exquisite ecstasy and languor. Sometimes it’s not the saint I check on but a sculptured portrait in the same room of the banker Filippo Strozzi – stern like a Roman emperor, the face of rectitude and power – by Benedetto da Maiano, Civitali’s contemporary. Then I usually climb the stairs to admire Houdon’s bust of Gluck, the composer, and ogle a towering pair of craggy German knights, relics of Renaissance pageantry made of painted wood, each taller than the NBA star Dirk Nowitzki. Mostly, though, I go to the Bode for the silence. Like a sentry commanding the northern tip of Berlin’s Museum Island, its back turned to the busier Pergamon Museum, the Neues Museum, the Altes Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode seems to attract just a few handfuls of visitors a day. Some go there to see the paintings, coins and Byzantine art. The sculpture rooms are mostly abandoned. Is it me, or do we seem to have a problem with sculpture today? I don’t mean contemporary sculpture, whose fashionable stars (see Koons, Murakami et alia) pander to our appetite for spectacle and whatever’s new. I don’t mean ancient or even non-Western sculpture, either. I mean traditional European sculpture – celebrities like Bernini and Rodin aside – and US sculpture, too: the enormous universe of stuff we come across in churches and parks, at memorials and in museums like the Bode. The stuff Barnett Newman, the Abstract Expressionist painter, notoriously derided as objects we bump into when backing up to look at a painting. A few minutes’ walk from the Bode, the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche, the rebuilt neo-Gothic former church designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the 1830s, houses its own sublime assortment of 19th-cen- tury sculpture. It’s usually even emptier than the Bode, and it is free to boot. I’ll occasionally spend an hour or so there, feeling small and unimportant before the portraits of Kant and the great German archaeologist Johann Winckelmann. Except for the doleful guards, I rarely encounter another living soul. It seems that traditional European sculpture, that was once extremely popular, has seemingly fallen off the charts of museum goers I grew up with the smells of plaster dust and clay in my mother’s sculpture studio on Third Avenue. Making a figure out of stone or metal retains its childlike wonder for me. But sculpture skeptics from Leonardo through Hegel and Diderot A gallery of Italian Renaissance and Baroque sculptures at the Bode Museum, Berlin, Germany. have cultivated our prejudice against the medium. “Carib art,” is how Baudelaire described sculpture, meaning that even the suavest, most sophisticated works of unearthly virtuosity by Enlightenment paragons like Canova and Thorvaldsen were tainted by the medium’s primitive, cultish origins. Racism notwithstanding, Baudelaire had a point. Sculpture does still bear something of the burden of its commemorative and didactic origins. It’s too literal, too direct, too steeped in religious ceremony and too complex for a historically amnesiac culture. We prefer the multicolored distractions of illusionism on flat surfaces, flickering in a movie theatre or digitised on our laptops and smartphones, or painted on canvas. The marketplace ratifies our myopia, making headlines for megamillion-dollar sales of old master and Impressionist pictures but rarely for premodern sculptures. Critics bow to fashion and a legacy of lazy disdain, largely avoiding the topic – I’ve done it myself, so I know – and museums only perpetuate the cycle, offering a steady flow of Botticelli, Monet and Rembrandt exhibitions, before which we genuflect like medieval pilgrims praying before sculptured shrines. But sculpture shows that might broaden our horizons, being costly and difficult to mount, are almost rarer than genuine newly discovered Michelangelos. In an age of special effects, we may also simply no longer know how to feel awe at the sight of sculptured faces by the German genius Tilman Riemenschneider or before a bronze statue by Donatello. We can’t see past the raw materiality and subject matter. Never mind that Donatello may have been the greatest creative genius until Picasso; he long ago got lapped in the public’s imagination by Madame Tussaud, who has given way to Avatar in 3-D and Alexander McQueen’s trippy costumed mannequins. I read that the Metropolitan Museum had decided to stay open late to accommodate the bewildering crowds for its McQueen extravaganza. Mass hysteria is how a friend described it to me. It clearly became the height of fashion for people to stand in the endless line, if only to have been able to say that they stood in the endless line. How many of those people, I asked myself, stopped to look at any of the Met’s sculptures while they were there, or ever had? A sculpture of St John the Baptist by artist Matteo Civitali. 32 Tuesday, August 23, 2011 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 11:00 pm BBC World: BBC WORLD NEWS AMERICA 9:55 pm Disney XD: KID VS KAT 8:20 pm Discovery HD Showcase: NATIONAL PARKS NEW ZEALAND: FIORDLAND 7:15 pm Extreme Sports: SLOVAKI: A TRUE MOVIE ABOUT... A diehard fan of melodious princess and singer Sami Khan is all set to pay Nazia Hassan a grand tribute, in which anyone can sing and take part to pay tribute to the singer. Sami Khan said, “Soon I will announce it on Facebook about the concert, which we are planning, in which many mainstream artists and underground bands will come forward to pay Nazia Hassan a grand tribute by singing her songs in their style.” MODEL and business woman Vaneeza Ahmad Ali is going to organise Style 360 Bridal Couture Week in Lahore that will be a three-day event with continuous shows. While asked about the show Vaneeza Ahmad Ali explained, “The nature of Style 360 Bridal Couture Week is a smorgasbord of everything wedding related. I mean you’ve got everything to do with weddings under one roof — from designers to florists, you name it”. VANEEZA AHMAD NAZIA HASSAN Koi Tujh Sa Kahan was just a start: Reema TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK RESSED in a fancy outfit as she frequently adjusts her bangs and tosses her hair (with carefully placed extensions), it’s hard to imagine that she has been around for over 22 years, leaving one wondering if she has been ‘under the knife’. But more than the looks, it’s the effort she has made to move on from being a starlet to a marketable celebrity (she is her best publicist). Debuting in Bulandi and going on to work in hundreds of Lollywood productions, Reema reinvented her image and can now be seen sitting pretty while hosting a chat show on television. The ease with which she gives advice on life, she can easily be considered as Pakistan’s answer to Dr Phil! “Over the years I have learnt a lot of things, the most important lesson being to stay humble and not get consumed by how one looks. Beauty fades but if you have what it takes — grit and dedication — you will survive,” she says. “I have had my time as an actress, doing scores of films in a year but now direction is something that appeals to me. Koi Tujh Sa Kahan was just the start, Love Mein Gum (LMG) is another offering. It’s my bit for the revival of cinema.” Given that revival of cinema is more of a cliché, Reema seems to have taken to it like a fish to water. For any sick unit’s rehabilitation, finances and remedies are needed but in the case of Pakistan’s film industry, there is little possibility of this happening. Getting our film industry back on its feet would require at least 50 films a year, and ones that have good content and can attract the masses. The task demands huge amounts of D Reema Khan investment which not many would be willing to take at this juncture. I ask Reema how she thinks her film can change fortunes. “I believe in doing my bit, even if it’s a single film. Rather than sitting around doing nothing, it’s better to make an effort,” she says. When presented with the argument that no advancements have been made in terms of improving the technical or financial aspects of film-making in Pakistan and that it needs more than a one-off effort such as Bol or LMG, Reema looks around to think before saying, “Anything and everything is possible. Please don’t say our film industry is dead,” her voice filled with emotion. Starting with Bulandi and going on to work in hundreds of Lollywood productions, Reema reinvented her image and can now be seen sitting pretty while hosting a chat show on television She goes on to add that urgent steps are needed on a war-footing basis. “It’s too late now and we can’t stop the onslaught of Indian films, but what we can do is improve our content. Obviously, parallels will be drawn but there are always takers and the audience will be willing to take a chance if we put in our effort. We also need institutional support and have to provide our staff with training and opportunities to upgrade their skills. With the technical side going down the drain, the worst casualty has been the poor technicians. The bottom line here is that we need money.” Taking the urgent need for funding a step further, she mentions Bollywood and how it is funded “not only by the state but also by the underworld.” In her case, she says she has been lucky to find sponsorship for her film. Given that ample amount of money was available, she shot LMG in major cities and northern areas of Azarbijan as well as in several cities of Malaysia. However, for post-production, she chose India “as the quality improves drastically given that they have the right equipment.” LMG is all set for an Eid-ul-Fitr release. The out-and-out commercial film aims to please the masses with what the film-maker claims is “quality entertainment.” While on the subject, of the title song directed by Saqib Malik and sponsored by Lux, quite a few viewers are pained by the fact that it looks like a copy of Om Shanti Om’s title number. Reema gets visibly agitated when this got pointed out but she dismisses the criticism, “It’s a great video. I got Saqib to do it because he is very talented. It’s a fun, peppy song and the video is not a rip-off of any Indian song.” Changing gears swiftly, the smart girl reverts to the revival of cinema, insisting that in order for Pakistani cinema to survive, it needs more entertainment and not art films. “Art films might take the director and producer to awards all over the world but they will not help the cause of the people associated with the trade. Call me what you like but escapism sells. With all due respect, Bol might be a good film and Shoaib Mansoor a great director, but the masses don’t want so many issues being sent their way. All day long you see and hear news of people being killed and wounded being broadcast on TV channels with no censor in place. People want some kind of relief from these harsh realities of life and a well-made, intelligent film takes their mind off their troubles,” she concludes. Ol Rock refreshes 90s’ pop TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK D ESPITE the intense criticism that Coke Studio received, the musical show still gave corporations the guts to invest in the rapidly enervating music industry. As a ripple effect, one saw a telecommunications brand launch its own version in the form of “Uth Records”, promoting undiscovered artistes. Now the latest to join the bandwagon is yet another beverage brand that has rehashed Pakistani pop classics from the 1990s under Olfrute Ol Rock. Ol Rock is a musical show with distinctive characters performing old Pakistani pop songs covered by various artists. Many bands and artists have become part of the show that has started to make waves. Until now, The show has included covers and songs by known bands such as Seige and Cheapmunks till now. For the generation that grew up listening to Ali Haider, Najam Sheraz and Bunny, Ol Rock brings back the memories of an era when the TV reigned, when Fakhre Alam ruled the pop charts, cassettes with open reels lay strewn liberally across car seats and oversized fashion was an eyesore. A poster of Siege’s Jaasimilli. A poster of tv show Olfrute Ol Rock. Having released eight songs as part of a drama serial, the Ol Rock campaign is a simple, effective and cost-friendly venture that refurbishes songs like Qarar, Tairee Ankhon Ka and Aajana to suit the tastes of the techno-urbanised youth of today. Shot along the gritty streets of Karachi in places like Kothari Parade, bazaars and beaches, the videos show how the Karachi landscape has changed from back in the day. What is remarkable about these videos is how well they portray and carry emblems of popular culture, linking it from the 1990s to the 2000s and connecting a whole audience of young Pakistanis to former pop idols that made headway in the absence of MTV, foreign media and YouTube. Siege’s Jaasimilli, which is a vibrant but sanitised item number of sorts, brings to the fore the light-hearted innocuous flirtations that characterised educational institutes. Songs such as Teri Ankhon Ka Ishara by Bunny and Qarar by Ali Haider have been refreshed to create a hip, disco feel and are shot indoors but stylised in a manner that makes them a good watch. The Haider classic has been anglicised by Cheapmunks to work for a Facebookobsessed youth that is posing incessantly in the video while grooving to the song and sporting candy floss coloured screen shades, which are not only a popular accessory for the early teens but also cleverly resonate Cheapmunk’s trademark of the same. The video is a snap shot of the yuppie youth culture where young boys and girls are just out to have a good time but know that this ‘fun’ must be ensconced in some private space. Similarly, Tere Ankhon Ka Ishara recreates the Rajesh Khanna era, replete with polka dots, puffy hair, aviators, bow ties, butterflies and flower power. If Pakistan had a club culture, these songs would be blasting from speakers there and playing on repeat. One would like to see them attempt more complex and epic classics like Sajjad Ali’s Chief Saab that holds as true now as it did in the 1990s. Also to give credit where it is due, the corporate interest in Ol Rock doesn’t debase the project. Sure there is brand presence but it doesn’t engulf the general depiction of pop culture. FTER filmmaker Karan Johar and Bollywood veteran Simi Garewal, its now Indian actress Preity Zinta who has joined the chatshow bandwagon on the small screen with her upcoming show Up Close and Personal with PZ. The actress, who has worked with Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and others will be chatting with celebrities about their journey via personal quizzes, career maps, prodding some dark secrets, hidden talents and impromptu tests on acting and dancing skills. “I am very excited about the show as I feel it is the perfect platform for me to connect with the audiences while giving them access and to know the real stars,” she said. The show will be aired on UTV Stars from September 3. Preity made her television debut as the host of Guinness World Records — Ab India Todega early this year. “The show is designed to deliver the promise of being intimate insiders. With Preity as the host the show will bring back the charm in chat shows,” UTV Stars Business Head Nikhil Gandhi said. Preity shot with Shahrukh Khan on Thursday evening. Her first-ever guest on the set, however, was Akshay Kumar, followed by Farhan Akhtar and Arjun Rampal. And talks A are on to rope in four more names, including some of the host’s female friends too. When asked if the guest-list and her conversations with each one (especially SRK and Salman) could, at some level, spark off ‘talks’ within the industry circles, the host asserts, “I share an excellent rapport with each one of my guests. The set has been designed like a house. The concept is that every week, I have a guest over for a cup of coffee and some fun activities. I don’t intend to excavate their private lives, their relations with others, and so on. Every chat show doesn’t need to have controversies and personal remarks to become a hit. And I don’t want to encourage any ‘talks’.” Prod her on what she had in mind while talking to her subjects, and she says, “The show hasn’t started yet. And I am contractually bound not to reveal the conversations.” Preity has been on Simi’s Rendezvous and Karan’s coffee show in the past. Did she turn to either for anchoring tips? “I haven’t watched India’s Most Desirable. Simi, I know, is a host who gets these intimate conversations just right. Karan is a buddy and he suggested some really cool titles. But I haven’t imported ideas for my show,” says Preity. “As for Karan, I didn’t ask him for anchoring tips because I anyway talk a lot and I have some intrinsic qualities of my own, which should see me through this show.” Preity Zinta's upcoming chat show Up Close and Personal with PZ will be aired on UTV Stars from September 3.
