Exceptional Month for Team BC
Exceptional Month for Team BC
Cycling BC to offer support for U23
riders at National Championships
Cycling BC is happy to announce that it
will be providing athlete support
services for U23 riders attending the
National Championships in July if
needed.
Male and Female U23 riders will be able
to access transportation from Quebec City
to the Beauce Region and
receive coaching support during racing
events. Cycling BC believes this support
will provide U23 athletes with a valuable
level of assistance that will improve
performance at Nationals.
If you would like more information on this
program, please contact Richard Wooles,
Provincial Head Coach , on

Excellent performances by BMX, Road,
and Mountain Bike riders have built the
momentum for what looks to be a
groundbreaking year for Cycling BC’s
Provincial Team.
Cycling BC's focus on its development
programme is beginning to show its
muscle.
All of the staff and riders have been putting
in innumerable hours since the inception of
the Provincial Team program eighteen
months or so ago and, as with most
consistent effort, it is beginning to pay off
as the team they have been building is
really packing a punch.
May was incredibly busy for this up and
coming team. Abbotsford was host to the
National BMX Championships (now, of
course, an Olympic Sport) while Bromont
and Mt. Tremblant, Quebec, put on both
Cross Country and Downhill Canada Cups
at which 11 riders were representing Team
BC. South of the border Road and Track
Development riders were getting ready for
the Provincial Championships with some
stage racing and in Europe two Junior
Development Road riders were taking part
in races in France.
Across all of the disciplines, Team BC
riders have been making good on their
potential, and the list of results is
impressive. An incredible 11 podium places
for the mountain bikers at the two Canada
Cups, six podium places at BMX Nationals
and four athletes qualified for World
Championships, and three podium places
for Cody Campbell in some tough
European racing all speak to the talent here
in BC.
This long list of results doesn’t include other
riders from BC who ride for other teams,
because we don’t want to take credit where
it’s not due. Congratulations to them as
well, it’s been a great month for all, and we
look forward to the rest of the season!

Success for Team BC at BMX Nationals
Team BC riders made 11 trips to
the podium at the first two
Canada Cups, in Bromont and Mt.
Tremblant, Quebec
Team BC Cross Country and Downhill
mountain bike riders rode their socks off
this month at the Canada Cups, with the
aim of qualifying for the Canadian
National Team for the World
Championships in Italy. They won’t have
long to wait to find out if they made it, as
th
the Worlds take place from the 17 to the
nd
22 of June.
At Bromont, Evan Guthrie won the Men’s
Junior XC race, with Tyler Allison in 2nd
place. Trenton Zoobkoff took 2nd in the
Junior Men’s DH, while Miranda Miller
won the Junior Women’s DH with a time
rd
that placed her 3 in the Elite Women’s
category. The Elite Women’s podium was
made up entirely of riders from BC,
although both Micayla Gatto (1st) and
nd
Danice Uyesugi (2 ) both ride for trade
teams.
At Mt. Tremblant a week later, Bianca
Adolf won the Junior Women’s XC,
making up for her disappointment
(despite an excellent performance) in
nd
Bromont. Tyler Allison took 2 in the
Junior Men’s XC, a very strong and
consistent performance from this rider
who is still a cadet. Evan Guthrie broke
his back wheel, but still finished in 3rd
place. Miranda Miller put in another
strong performance, winning the Junior
nd
Women’s DH and placing 2 in the Elite
Women’s DH with her time. Kyle Marshall
won the U17 Men’s category.
National Team selections should be
made soon, and updates will be in the
next edition of the newsletter.
Lots of trips to the podium, and four Team
BC riders selected for the 11-strong
Canadian National Team for the World
Championships tell the tale of a great
National Championships.
Team BC riders won the Men’s Elite title
(Scott Erwood), the Junior Women’s title
(Brookelyn Wilkinson), and the Men’s
Under 16 title (Tory Nyhaug, reigning World
Champion).
“We can make BC the
hub of high
performance riders in
Canada – the raw talent
here is extraordinary.”
Richard Wooles
Scott, Brookelyn, Danielle Brisson, and
Mike Irwin were all selected after the event
for the World Championships team,
meaning that BC riders make up 36% of the
Canadian Team this year. Adam Muys,
Cycling BC’s BMX Coach, was also
selected to travel as Assistant Coach.
Well done to everyone, all of the hard work
you’ve put in is paying off. Best of luck for
the Worlds in China!

The busiest part of the season has started, and Team BC
riders have been focusing on racing, with support from the
Cycling BC Provincial Team. There’s been lots of action in
BMX, Mountain Bike (Cross Country and Downhill), Road,
and Track racing here in BC as well as around the world.

European
Experience for
Team BC Juniors
Cody Campbell and Evan Flater, two of
our Team BC Junior Endurance riders,
have been over in Europe racing with
the National Junior Team. They’ve now
arrived at the UCI World Cycling Centre
in Aigle, Switzerland, where they will
stay to train and race with a group of
riders from around the world.
They arrived safe and sound in Aigle
after a slightly harrowing transfer from
one train to another (5 minutes, bike
bags, and “luggage to the max”).
They’ve settled into their temporary
home, been issued UCI team clothing,
and have met many of the coaches and
athletes who work and train at the
Centre.
Both riders are grateful for the
experience of staying at the UCI Centre
(“it’s awesome!”), and would like to thank
Cycling BC and their sponsors for the
opportunity.

Dan Proulx, Cycling BC Youth Coach
Blue Mountain School in Maple
Ridge, BC hosted the 9th Cycling
BC Youth Team event of the
season. Special thanks goes to
Principal Linda Dyck and the
Parent's Advisory Council who
were instrumental in getting this
event off the ground.
Blue Mountain integrated the
Youth Team program into their
regular class schedule for the day.
Grades were divided among 4
divisions. Each group enjoyed 40
minutes of racing instruction –
highlighted by a series of very
competitive races. It was
incredible to see kids pick up so
many skills in such a short lesson.
In addition to the racing, the
students were also given a
refresher course in bicycle
handling and road safety skills –
essential for the summer holidays
ahead.
The highlight of the day was the
final group which was given a
special 90 minute block of time for their
cycling lesson. These students improved
more than any others in the Youth Team
program to date. In one lesson they
advanced through pacelines, pack racing
skills and right into some fast racing. In
their paceline work they spontaneously
started to create breakaways by learning to
jump into any available gap in the line.
Soon there were two groups, with one
group chasing the other and all riders
taking half lap pulls. It was pretty amazing
to see a bunch of Grade 6 students learn a
few track racing skills and then adapt them
to new situations.
In total, 120 students participated in today's
event. Since January, the Cycling BC
Youth Team program has taught cycling to
370 students from across British Columbia.
Team BC BMX riders won
