Summer 2015 - La Habra Library Used Bookstore
Summer 2015 Friends of the La Habra Library Newsletter President’s Message The lazy days of summer are upon us. Wait a moment! The library is a beehive of activity during this time. The Friends of the Library is proud to help support the many programs available to young people and adults. Summertime for the Friends of the Library is the time we start planning for membership renewal and recruitment. Our membership year is September 1st to August 31st. Renewing members can help us grow by talking to family and friends about the Friends of the Library. Let interested individuals know that while welcome, volunteering in the bookstore is not a requirement for membership. Summertime also marks the time we start planning our October general meeting. We hope to once again provide a program of interest to many in the community. Our past two October meetings have drawn capacity crowds. As we draw closer to the time of this event, look for information about, and publicity for, this special meeting in our mailings and the local newspapers. Leon Getz President Be an “Early Bird” and send in your renewal before you forget. Help us grow. Pass this Bookmark along to a friend. If you have any questions about membership, our organization, or wish to be a volunteer, please email us at INFO_LHFOL@verizon.net. Friends of the La Habra Library Newsletter Summer 2015 From the Branch Manager 2 I am so thrilled to announce that we have been awarded three grants, with a fourth one soon to be announced. Both Beatriz Preciado and David Elliott participated in a unique OC Public Library staff training program administered through the California State Library. Only about 30 staff members were selected for this program, which included public speaking, job shadowing, and grant writing. All participants were required to submit a grant proposal, just over half were accepted, and I am very proud to say that both of them were awarded a grant. David’s grant will provide laptops with educational software that correlates with the school district curriculum to help students in our Homework Help program. Beatriz co-wrote a grant with our sister library, Garden Grove Chapman, which will assist people in obtaining a driver license under the provisions of AB60. And we are now able to announce that OC Public Libraries has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant! This was a very competitive process and our grant is one of about 80 applications accepted from a few hundred submissions. We will be reading Luis Urrea’s Into the Beautiful North throughout the county, with numerous accompanying programs including our annual Day of the Dead event, writing and art workshops, events with different authors and culminating with La Habra’s second annual Tamale Festival. Beatriz, Sherry Toth — our former children’s librarian (recently promoted to Assistant County Librarian) and I co-wrote the grant. The City of La Habra is one of several partners in this grant, which runs from late September through November. Specific information on programs can be found on page 6 and more will be included in the fall Bookmark. The book will be available at our branch in late August so we have a chance to read it for the September book discussion. Until then, we have plenty of other programs this summer to keep you and your family busy, as you’ll see in the following pages as we all READ TO THE RHYTHM!. This year, instead of buying books, the Friends funded the purchase of two AWE computers for children ages 2-8. These computers are located next to the children’s Internet PCs and are loaded with about 80 different educational software programs, most in Spanish as well as English. With two headphones available, I have been gratified to see parents sitting with their children and using the computers with them so the parents are full partners in their children’s learning. A demonstration of some of the programs showed much creativity and an impressive range of subjects. There is even a webcam that lets the child take a photo of anything and then create a jigsaw puzzle which the child has to put back together. La Habra was the first branch to buy these computers and following our example, a Friends’ group in Irvine has authorized purchase of 2 AWE computers for their branch. Thank you, Friends, for your forward thinking in supporting new programs at our branch! Enjoy an exciting program of Reading to the Rhythm this summer! Jill Patterson Friends of the La Habra Library Newsletter Summer 2015 Adult Services The Adult Services department would like to wish everyone a happy summer and invite the community to participate in this year’s adult summer reading program: Read to the Rhythm. Read to the Rhythm commences on June 20th with an official kickoff event and ends on August 2nd. During the program, the more your read, the more chances to win! The La Habra Library would like to specially thank community volunteer Amber Gould for her dedication and hard work in assembling 13 raffle prize baskets for the summer reading program. In the recent months, the library has had the opportunity to offer programming for the Spanish speaking community. In May we had the pleasure of hosting nutritionist Luz Maria Briseño who demonstrated how to make healthy smoothies. Radio personality Eddie “Piolion” Sotelo visited the library in June and shared his autobiography Speak Up! Finding My Voice Through Hope, Strength and Determination. Both programs were successful and were extremely well attended. The Adult Services department would like to cordially invite you to please join us for the following scheduled programs: Saturday, June 20 @ 1:00pm-3:00pm, Meet chef, entrepreneur, author and one of the founders of the food truck movement: Roy Choi. The idea of a Kogi taco, a fusion of Korean Barbeque with Mexican cuisine, has resulted in accolades for Choi and team including the 2009 Bon Appetit award for excellence in culinary innovation. Naranja, the Kogi BBQ Truck, will be on hand to sell food and drinks you can enjoy during the program from 1:00-3:00pm. Saturday, July 11th @ 2:30pm, Join us for an afternoon of music, writing inspiration and food with Michael Oates. Oates is the author of Wade in the Water and owner of Café Hidalgo in Fullerton. Experience a mini taste of Café Hidalgo while supplies last. Books available for purchase. Saturday, August 15 @ 2:30pm, Back by popular demand: Hypnotherapy with Bill Engle. Mr. Engle is a Certified Clinical Master Hypnotherapist, with over 26 years of experience in the field. He will demonstrate hypnosis and dispel myths. Adult Volunteers, As of January 1, 2015 Orange County Public Libraries requires all adult volunteers to consent to a background check as part of the volunteer application process. Background and registration forms can be obtained at the Information Desk. La Habra Library is thankful to all volunteers and would like to encourage new volunteers to join us. Volunteers are an essential part of our community. Computer Classes are taking a summer break, but will be back in September. For inquiries about the classes, please contact Jill Patterson or Beatriz Preciado at 562694-0078. Beatriz Preciado Adult Services Librarian Friends of the La Habra Library Newsletter Summer 2015 3 Teen Scene 4 The last few months have seen a lot of changes to the teen department. Many new and exciting things have happened or are going to be happening in the near future. First, we have Juan Gomez who is now assisting in all things teen. He is helping out with the TAB group and with all of the events and programs for the summer reading program. He has been instrumental in bringing some exciting people for summer reading including a caricature artist, a hip hop group, Guitar Center doing a demonstration and a Cos Play day that includes people from Ren Faire doing different musical and theatrical stylings. Most will be on Tuesdays at 2:30 pm. And for those of you interested we still have volunteer opportunities available for Teens during the summer with Summer Reading program and with TAB. Speaking of TAB, I want to say how appreciative I have been to have the dedicated teens come in to help plan as well as participate in events for the teens. I am always happy to see these core students come out and be involved in our library programs. From assisting with Earth Day to volunteering in the homework help program, they have been there. We have some new and exciting opportunities with TAB in the coming months. Aside from the Game Day which TAB sponsors for the kids every summer reading program, we will create some exciting changes. First, we hope to redecorate the teen department. Come and have your input in how the Teen Lounge is going to look in the future. Second, we are in the process of planning more events for the fall. From having a 3D Printer event to other volunteer and community opportunities the La Habra library has a lot of things coming up in the fall. One of those opportunities will come with a revamped Homework Help program. We already had a very successful, award winning program, helping grade school kids do their homework. This last year was no different with individual sessions consisting of as many as 37 different students. We had some amazing Teen Volunteers assist us. Each semester we had approximately 35 teens help out with these students giving of their time and energy. It’s always an inspiration to see their dedicated work with the kids, and we received exciting news this spring. We will be awarded a grant to add computers to the homework help program in the fall. We will provide opportunities for kids to complete their ST Math, Microsoft Office and Lexia Reading assignments during our homework help program. We will also hold classes for the parents to help them better engage their children in this new online learning environment. It should be an exciting fall, added to what already has been an amazing year. David Elliot Circulation and Teen Services L.A. Friends of the La Habra Library Newsletter Summer 2015 Children’s Corner Read to the Rhythm is such a cool theme for this summer! We are having half a dozen or so mini concerts of local talent to bring some music into the library…hope it all comes together! We are two weeks into the summer reading program with over 300 children preregistered for the county wide program by the time you read this. Since the La Habra School District ends the school year so early, we run our own Early Bird program to keep them engaged and coming into the library until the county program starts. Thanks to the Friends for providing the Lemon Scratch & Sniff, and the Pete the Cat Rock Out with a Good Book bookmarks for the Early Bird prizes. There was a LOT of noise on June 11 when we had SplatBoomBang, a percussive storytelling experience for our first program. We will be following with Wild Wonders Animals, John McLean Allan: Bagpiper, Family Dance Day, Game Day, and Juggler David Cousin. As is traditional, we end with our 12th Annual La Habra Kids Talent Show! You are all welcome to come and enjoy this delightful event! The Angels’ Strike Force will be visiting storytime on July 15th during the All Star Break. The girls don’t get to go to the All Star Game, they are coming to see us instead. We are still trying to arrange a date for LA County Fire Station #191 to visit, and will end the summer with Jill’s Famous Ice Cream Storytime. Our Summer Storytime schedule includes our Monday Baby Lapsit at 10:30am (a new program offered by our new Librarian Assistant Alex), Tuesday evening Family story time at 7pm, Wednesday morning Storytime at 10:30am, and our Wednesday evening Spanish/English bilingual story time for preschoolers and their families at 7pm. Our story times teach pre-literacy skills to the children which prepare them for success in kindergarten. We have recruited over 50 local teens as volunteers for the summer. This fine crew of middle and high school students will be running the Summer Reading Desk for the kids, helping with almost all the different programs offered at the Branch over the summer, and completely in charge of the talent show. Wow, we are so very lucky to have them! There’s something for everyone in the family here at the library. I want to give a special thank you to Dolores Greenberg for the fantastic baking for our Thomas the Tank Engine program. Pretzels, little train cookies that sit on the rim of the cup and the coolest Rail Road Crossing cookies on a stick! You are amazing, Dolores!! As ever, thanks for all your support and all that you do to make the library and its services to our patrons possible!! Catherine Gillette Children’s Librarian Friends of the La Habra Library Newsletter Summer 2015 5 What is The Big Read? What is the Big Read? A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Managed by Arts Midwest, this initiative offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. The Big Read supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. OC Public Libraries last participated in an NEA Big Read with the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Last year, we participated in a similar statewide program, War Comes Home, with our reading of Karl Marlantes’ book, What It Is Like To Go To War. This year, we wanted to choose a book that would resonate in our communities and relate to a currently relevant topic. Luis Urrea’s book, Into the Beautiful North, is a moving and humorous adventure with an irrepressible heroine who, after watching the movie “The Magnificent Seven”, decides to head into El Norte, e.g. the U.S. to find her own magnificent seven to protect her small town in Mexico from the bandits who are planning to take over. Why does she need to recruit protectors for her town? All the men, including her father, have already journeyed to El Norte to find work, leaving the town defenseless. 6 Luis Urrea says of this book, “It felt subversive to make undocumented people the heroes of an American book. To make the three male heroes a gay man, a Mexican bowling alley janitor, and a scary cholo from the Tijuana municipal garbage dump. It also felt subversive to make the action-hero a 19 year old young woman undertaking a heroine’s journey.” Please check in the library for upcoming presentations or check out the OC Public Library website calendar at: www.ocpl.org and check the events under La Habra Library. New books are shelved everyday so come in often to see what’s new. Since we have had an overload of science fiction/fantasy books donated, we are offering a large amount of them in the hall for 10 cents. If that is your favorite genre, now is the time to come browse. Melanie Dennis Welcome and Many Thanks to Our New Volunteers: Monique Bergland Diane Grisham David Garcia Lupe Ruiz Each of the above has generously volunteered to work a regular two-hour shift in the bookstore. David Garcia is currently working three two-hour shifts, which is a first for any volunteer in our bookstore. We are still in great need of substitutes to work on call as needed. This is vacation time when we need more substitutes than usual. We also have several volunteers who are on a leave of absence due to medical reasons. We hate to close the bookstore for lack of a substitute. Applications for volunteering are available in the bookstore and may be left with the volunteer at the desk.
