Editor Floyd Hepler Contributors Gordon Aitken Glenn Arnett Jack Taylor Danny Young Nick Young $8,000 Awarded in Scholarships for 2014! As in years past, the competition for 1600 Communications Association Scholarships in 2014 was strong, with an excellent pool of applications. The selection committee had the difficult task of deciding among a number of worthy applicants. After screening for eligibility, all applications were evaluated in ten areas -- academic achievement, leadership, character and commitment, extracurricular activities, quality of the written essay, quality and completeness of the application, potential for academic success, career potential, financial planning, and evidence of responsible citizenship. After thorough evaluation of all the applications, the Committee selected three of the applicants for scholarship awards. The Association is proud to announce the 2014 scholarship recipients: Anjoli Rowe * Towson University $3,500 Sarah Holmes Clemson University $3,000 Sara Hess Longwood University $1,500 * Anjoli Rowe is also recognized as this year’s recipient of the Ronald K. Thomsen Memorial Scholarship, receiving the highest amount awarded. Ron Thomsen was a long-time Association member who served on the Board in virtually every capacity for more than 25 years and was the driving force behind making the Scholarship Program what it is today. The Association offers its congratulations to this year’s scholarship awardees and wishes all applicants good luck and success in their academic pursuits. The Association would also like to thank the members of the selection committee, Gordon Aitken, Bill Bogart, and George Bafundo. Each year they devote many hours to evaluating each applicant and ensuring the selection process is both thorough and fair. Thanks for your hard work and dedication. www.1600commassoc.org Page 2 Summer, 2014 Association Leadership Contact Information 2014 President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer/Membership: Director-At-Large: Director-At-Large: Editor: Historian: Parliamentarian: Danny Young MSgt Nicholas Young Tanika Hart Glenn Arnett Sam Watkins Helen Pennington Floyd Hepler Gordon Aitken Sarah Olo DannyY@1600commassoc.org NicholasY@1600commassoc.org TanikaH@1600commassoc.org GlennA@1600commassoc.org SamW@1600commassoc.org HelenP@1600commassoc.org FloydH@1600commassoc.org GordonA@1600commassoc.org SarahO@1600commassoc.org 240.678.9770 202.757.8199 443.807.1508 703.689.2216 240.205.3666 703.781.7773 301.274.5996 703.491.2097 719.238.9695 To volunteer for events or to offer other assistance to the Association, please email Volunteers@1600commassoc.org. WHCA Open House & 1600 Communications Association Shrimp Feast On June 21, 2014, members of the 1600 Communications Association, along with active duty and civilian members of WHCA, hosted the annual Shrimp Feast and WHCA Open House. Attendance at this year’s event was light compared to previous years, but those present enjoyed themselves to the fullest. Special guests included former WHCA Commanders Colonel Lawrence Schumann USA, (ret), Colonel Thomas J, Hawes USA (ret), and Colonel Michael B. Black USAF (ret). Also in attendance was former Camp David Commander, Brigadier General Timothy Lake, USA (ret). The theme of this year’s event was the WHCA family. Colonel Donovan Routsis, the WHCA Commander, began the event by welcoming approximately 200 WHCA members, past and present, and their families. The 1600 Association President, Mr. Danny Young, then brought everyone up to date on the most recent activities of the 1600 Association. All, regardless of age enjoyed the many activities, including static displays of past and current communications equipment. Children were able to experience a day in the life of a WHCA member, including loading and offloading pallets as well as participating in a physical training session. The event concluded with the WHCA Commander having present and former members tell stories from the past (from their experiences on trip sites). The day culminated with the Shrimp Feast, which included steamed shrimp, beef brisket, pulled pork, hot dogs and numerous sides. Several generations of WHCA members spent time together, enjoying the food and sharing stories. A special thanks to the WHCA Open House Committee, whose great support made this event possible. We look forward to seeing everyone at our future events! Photos from this summer event will be available soon via www.1600commassoc.org -please check the site’s Photos page for updates. www.1600commassoc.org Page 3 Summer, 2014 Treasurer’s Report July 18, 2014 Bank Account Balances as of July 18, 2014 Checking $ 2,756.23 Scholarship Working Account $ 5,347.06 Scholarship CD $11,010.02 CD1 $ 2,394.75 CD2 $ 5,946.42 CD3 $ 4,009.39 Scholarship Donations | Thank you to MG Henry J. Because of the heavy demand, we once again were able to use two courses and had 155 golfers out for the day. Play moved quickly, as only a few holes were doublestacked, and the weather cooperated with us. Our winners are listed elsewhere in this newsletter, as are our very generous sponsors, whose support helped us to raise $7,679 to be added to the Scholarship/Wounded Warriors Fund. Additionally, former WHCA Commander Colonel Michael Black, USAF (ret) won the 50/50 raffle and donated his winnings back to the fund ($613!). Finally, the raffle for the David Musty Putters brought in $640. Our net income for the day was $8,932. We were honored by the presence of Colonel Donovan Routsis, the current WHCA Commander, as well as Colonel Michael Black, USAF (ret) and Colonel Thomas Hawes, USA (ret). Participants this year included 18 active duty military members, down a bit because of the heavy travel schedule. We were also pleasantly surprised when one foursome checked-in with Omarosa Maigault, formerly of NBC’s first season of The Apprentice! Thanks to our numerous volunteers, which included a number of WHCA folks, we were able to provide a positive golfing experience and an enjoyable afternoon. WHCA volunteers were led by our primary contacts, MSgt Charles Montgomery and SSG Jacob Bridges, who did a terrific job getting the word out to the WHCA staff and enlisting support. They also assisted with the registration. Other volunteers included Bill Quevy, Michael Milward, and Jason Zisaruk, and Ellen Floyd from AT&T, and Jeanne Taylor, photographer (South Course and general event photos). We especially would like to thank Bob Ohm, the previous Tournament Coordinator for many years. His knowledge and experience were key in helping ensure a successful tournament. Bob provided a complete tutorial on every facet of the process, which proved invaluable as the date of the tournament grew closer. It is the dedicated volunteers like Bob Ohm that allow the Association to continue to put on events such as the golf tournament and Shrimp Feast. Thanks again, Bob, for all of your years of dedication to the Association and this tournament, especially. As always, the 1600 Communications Association Golf Committee made it all work. Many thanks for their continuing contributions: Gordon Aitken Jack Taylor, Golf Chair Danny Young Glenn Arnett (East Course and general event photos also) Helen Pennington Floyd Hepler Thanks to all who participated in any way.
