Zias Set to Host LSC Opponent and 2012 Home Opener Zias Kick Off Conference Play The Eastern New Mexico University women’s volleyball team is set to host Abilene Christian University for their first LSC home contest of the season. Following, the Zias will make a trip to in-state rivals New Mexico Highlands University. The Zias have spent the last two weeks on the road and are ready to play at home and start Lone Star Conference play. Last year the Zias hit .131 at home and pounded out 415 kills. Amber Durand led the charge as she tallied 111 kills in Greyhound Arena. Senior Dallas Russell led the defensive effort as she scooped up 142 digs and 3.84 digs per set in ten home matches. Last Time in the Series Overall, the Zias are 33-42 against the ACU Wildcats with ACU taking the last ten meetings from the Zias. Last year the Wildcats completed the season sweep as they took both games 3-0. The last time the Zias picked up a win against ACU dates back to October 21, 2004. In a 3-1 (3028, 25-30, 32-30, 30-28) Lindsay Schiely and Anna Bellum combined for 30 kills, while Jessica Weeks scooped up a game-high 18 digs. In the last meeting with the Cowgirls it came down to an exciting game five. In a fifth set that typically ends at 15, the Zias and Cowgirls tied the game five times before the Zias took the last game 20-18 to complete the 3-2 victory. The Zias opened the season 3-1which is the best start since the 2002 season. The Zias then went on to play in Pueblo, Colorado in the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves Classic. In that tournament the Zias posted a 1-3 record and are now .500 after eight matches. Overall the Zias are hitting .113 to start the season and already have two more wins than at this point last year. In addition, in 2011 the Zias had only collected 24 service aces after the first eight games. This year, the Zias have doubled that number and have already collected 55 aces. The Zias are making opponents work defensively and its showing in the win column this year. Wildcat Points The ACU Wildcats have started off their season with tough competition. Four of their eight opponents are nationally ranked. Of their games, ACU manufactured three wins, one being against #21 Colorado Mines. Cowgirl Corner NMHU opened up the season with an impressive 3-1 record. Since then, the Cowgirls have not picked up a win and are 0-3 against LSC teams. ...................................... The results were extremely positive, as the Zias reached double figures in victories for the first time since the 2004 season, when he guided the squad to the NCAA Tournament. He enters his 23rd season at ENMU with 426 overall wins as a head coach, including 411 at Eastern. Maguire’s first stint as coach was highlighted by a 25-9 season in 2004, which included a 3-2 road victory at West Texas A&M. Since that win, the Lady Buffs have lost only four home matches. The season concluded with the Zias making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament, picking up a win over Mesa State, before eventually being eliminated by top-ranked University of Nebraska-Kearney. He also won the LSC regular season title in both 1991 and 1993; along with a conference tournament championships following the 1993 season. Under Maguire’s guidance, the Eastern’s Jennifer Goble was picked as the conference’s top player four times, Tina Mayo was picked as the LSC’s top freshman (1991) and the team had 41 players selected all conference 61 times, with 14 first-team selections. He was an assistant coach at Eastern in both the 1981 and 1984 seasons, helping the Zias to a 48-28-1 record during those seasons with a NAIA District VII title after posting a 29-11 record in 1984. Maguire has a record of 386-242 (.615) at ENMU, and has guided the Zias to 16 winning seasons in the last 17 years, with an average of more than 20 wins per year since 1989. His career record of 401257 (.609) ranks him among top active coaches in NCAA Division II. In 2004, Eastern made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history and finished the season with a 25-9 overall record. The Zias posted a solid 7-3 record in Lone Star Conference South Division play and advanced to the semifinals of the LSC Tournament, as well as the semifinals of the NCAA Southwest Regional Tournament. Maguire was named the LSC South Coach of the Year in 1999 after the Zias went 26-10 and earned a second place finish in the LSC South. He was named LSC Coach of the Year in 1991, 1993 and 1995. The Zias won the LSC regular season title in 1991, and won regular season and tournament titles in 1993. Maguire graduated from South High School in Pueblo, Colo., in 1976. He was All-State in basketball and earned an athletic scholarship to ENMU. He played two years for the Greyhounds, then transferred to Mesa State College, where he continued to play. In 1981, he received a B.A. degree in Psychology from Mesa State. The Zias reached the 1981 NAIA District VII Tournament. Maguire was the head volleyball coach and head basketball coach at Elida HS (N.M.) in 1982 and 1983. He returned to ENMU in 1984 as assistant coach, and helped the Zias win the NAIA District VII title with a 29-11 record. During his two seasons as an assistant, the Zias were 48-28-1 (.631). He earned a Master’s in Physical Education from ENMU in 1984 and was hired as head volleyball coach at Chadron State in Nebraska in 1985. Maguire siezed the chance to return to Eastern in 1987 when he accepted the position of head volleyball coach and head tennis coach. He has the longest tenure and the most victories of any coach in the 29-year history of the ENMU volleyball program. Maguire was a featured lecturer at the New Mexico Coaches Clinic in 1998. Maguire and his wife, Trish, are the parents of Alexis Marie. Trish is the director of Distance education and outreach. She has received the Spirit of Eastern Award.
