E Newsletter - 11-November
Newsletter “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 Yellow! I mean Hello! As you can see we went back to our yellow paper for our newsletter. You can really see the print much more clearly and it is a very cheery color. First, I would like to thank all of you who donated baked goods for primetime’s Feeding the Flock! We had so much left over that the extra goodies were used for the Shrimp Boil that night. That was a wonderful feast and I have never eaten so many shrimp in one sitting. It was great! October’s Federated Forum was a hoot! Ok, so that was one animal he didn’t bring, but Jungle Terry had us laughing the whole time. Or, was it the nursery school kids? I have forgotten just how funny they can be. As Bill Mason said, “The reactions from the kids were priceless!” Fun was certainly to be had when we took a trip to the Wine Spot and Edwin’s Restaurant. The Wine Spot is one of our favorite places to go and John and Marilee Biel’s son-in-law and daughter own it. Our wine tasting was very tasty and we all left with big smiles on our faces! In October, we went to Beck’s Center for the Arts to see Spitfire Grill and wow, could that cast sing! Later in the month, we went to the Chagrin Documentary Film Fest to see the Ohio Shorts Programs. One of these programs, “The Mural,” was created by our own Pastor Mark Simone and custodian Brent Simon. Along with the people on our trip, it was nice to see the church staff and members who were also there to support Mark and Brent. Good job guys! In November, we are only offering one trip because Claudia O’Brien and I will be in South Africa on our mission trip! Jane Badal and Dick Ziegler have been doing their mission work with Good Grief with Dick and Jane for over 10 years. Due to health reasons, they are no longer going to continue their wonderful work. They have helped so many people deal with the death of a spouse. They are two remarkably understanding, comforting and patient people. Thank you for all the time, effort and love you have put into this program. Another lovely person is Kathy Kinley, let’s all wish her a happy 90th birthday! Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Dolly Herschel Veteran’s Day Concert—November 11 at 8:00 pm Federated Church, 76 Bell St, Chagrin Falls Located in this historic Sanctuary in downtown Chagrin Falls, this 80 minute concert brings together music from 1915 to today in a moving tribute to the sacrifice by those who defend the right of freedom, including those who served in the Great War, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and those still serving today. M.S., M.B.A., Ph.D Health & Wellness Initiative Chair The role of fats in our diet—particularly saturated fats—has stirred up controversial headlines. While the media message has been confusing, research on fats and how they affect risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) is clear and consistent. Replacing saturated fat (found in butter, red meat) with polyunsaturated fat (found in nuts, vegetable oils) is associated with a lower risk of CHD. Studies that included more than 310,000 participants found that individuals who traded 5 percent of the calories they consumed from saturated fat sources for sources of linoleic acid, a main type of polyunsaturated fat, lowered their risk of CHD by 9 percent. This same group lowered their risk of death from CHD by 13 percent. One of the reasons this swap from saturated fat to polyunsaturated fat lowers CHD risk has to do with blood cholesterol. Polyunsaturated fats decrease “bad” LDL cholesterol. An increase in “bad” LDL cholesterol may hasten plaque buildup in arterial walls, resulting in CHD. Since all fats are not created equal, it makes a difference which type is consumed. To achieve a lower risk of CHD, the “swap” component is crucial—such as replacing butter or lard with vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, canola oil, and corn oil. Tai Chi Institute USA Student of the Month—Ricki Bunkin I am honored to be included in the society of student of the month for the Tai Chi institute. I have been practicing with Sifu Edward Niam for three years, during which time I have acquired a great appreciation of breath, strength, and focus. I am not a stranger to mind body work, in fact, I am a certified Pilates teacher. I work at a massotherapy studio and teach theraputic Pilates. It was while working with one of my older clients who felt unstable that I discovered Tai chi for seniors at the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls. My plan was to bring my client to class for her benefit, and to discover what was the magic of Tai Chi. My client never made it, but I was intrigued. Why were my legs and hips tired? My shoulders felt great. After all, I was exercising all the time. Tai chi was different, I felt stronger but more graceful. The practice of Tai Chi, my weekly yoga, and daily Pilates will enable me to continue riding my horses, skiing, and walking my two dogs. I will be celebrating my 71st birthday in two months and I want to continue with all the activities I love. The Federated Church 440.247.6490 Do They Know? Some years ago, my wife Ginny and I spent some time in France, and while there visited the battlefields, beaches and our National Cemetery at Normandy. Among the nearly 10,000 graves are those of many of my friends: friends I trained with, flew missions with, and friends who died while doing their duty flying as American air crews. As Ginny and I stood on the beach trying to prepare ourselves for our walk among the crosses, I felt as though I wanted to say something to those who lie there. I couldn’t. My emotions just wouldn’t let my voice work. Later, on the flight home, I wrote down, in the form of a poem, my thoughts as we stood on the beach and walked among the crosses. Let me share it with you. “Do They Know?” By Harry Guinther I stand mesmerized by the white sand beach Now gently caressed by tranquil summer waves of blue Showing no longer any tint of red, though I know it once Ran crimson with life’s blood shed too soon. As I turn from the sea of blue toward the sea of crosses I wonder, “Do they know?” The silence seems crushing on my soul. I tread softly through the rows of pure white crosses. I try to float for I cannot bear the thought that I might Crush the emerald grass of this hallowed soil, Soil in whose protecting solitude they now rest. And I wonder, “Do they know?” I long to ask them, but no sound comes forth. As I stare at each white marker and read their names Suddenly I seem to know them all. I anguish at their young ages and ponder How they must be missed by family and friends and… me. And I wonder, “Do they know? Do they know our awe, our respect, our devotion? Our reverence, our esteem, our sadness? Do they know their sacrifice was not in vain? Do they know that we have told our children? Do they know they are not forgotten, that we do remember? 5 Ongoing primetime@fed Offerings . . .
