Welcome to Bornholm Folk High School Welcome At Bornholm Folk High School, emphasis is placed on art, literature and music. All applicants must be at least 17½ years of age. The art subjects prepare students for further work in design and at art institutions. The Art Academy’s Design School on Bornholm is located in Nexø. Half of the weekly teaching at the school consists of basic general subjects. There is space for displaying skills and peace for absorption and development. Our teachers are well trained in their subjects, and there is a possibility to receive study and existential guidance. We have a close and intensive school life, with emphasis on freedom of expression and respect for others. The workshops are open the entire day. Monday morning there is a mandatory subject “Bornholm criss-cross. You will get to know most of Bornholm during your stay. Monday evening teachers and students play volleyball in the school’s gymnasium. Everyone can participate because the game is played with a soft ball. Tuesday afternoon we have weekly meetings for all students and staff in which we discuss all questions of relevance for the life of the school. Wednesday evening is “Folk High School Evening” with various contents and activities. You must choose one of three possible subjects in each of the two modules and a number of optional general subjects. In total, you have to participate in not less than 21 hours per week. Study tour to Torun in Poland in April is mandatory and at no extra charge We have space for 60 pupils. There is an international environment at the school with about half of the students coming from abroad. Practical Information Periods of teaching You can choose a period from 14 to 31 weeks. Please notice that the price for a week is slightly more expensive for courses lasting under 12 weeks. 12th of September 2016 – 18th of December 2016 (14 weeks) 6th of January 2017 – 27th of April 2017 (16 weeks) 12th of September 2016 – 27th of April 2017 (30 weeks) Prices The cost of the course is DKK 1.350 / € 181 per week (courses more than 12 weeks), and DKK 2.150 / € 288 per week (Courses less than 12 weeks). School fees are paid in advance with installments that fall due on the first day of each month. Registration fee When registering you are charged DKR 1.000 / € 135 in membership fee. Individual expenses for materials If you start a production in your free time, you must pay extra material expenses in proportion to your own requirements. The teacher of the workshop makes a decision about this. Rent of bicycles Fall: September–December: DKR. 300 / € 41 Spring: January-April: DKR. 300 / € 41 Christmas Holidays 18th of December 2016 – 6th of January 2017 It is possible to stay at the school during Christmas vacation for a modest fee of DKR 100 / € 14 daily for food and board. Return Weekends At the end of October and February the teaching is rescheduled so that it is possible to make a return from Friday morning to Sunday evening. The teaching take place the following Saturdays. Autumn 2016 Friday 28th of October Spring 2017 Friday 24th of February 2017 Rooms Everyone receives a single room if it is at all possible without own toilet and bath. Quilt is available but you have to bring linen and towels. Rent of linen and towels costs DKK 400 / € 55 It is possible to get a room with private bathroom. For these rooms there is an additional fee of DKK 400 / € 55 per. week. Laundry There are laundry machinery and dryers. Washing coins can be purchased. Financial Help It is possible to receive a scholarship from the school. In this case, you must send us your last yearly statement along with a written application telling us about your present economical situation. Discontinued stay at the highschool If you leave the highschool out of season, you will not receive your registration fees back. In accordance, your monthly rates will be approved from the first of the month. Written resignations are given to the leader of the school a month before you are to resign from the school. Glass Glass is a material, which can be used for artistic expression. You are introduced to how one blows and forms the warm glass, and how one works with color and different decoration techniques. Cold work with glass Decoration, engraving and sandblasting are some of the cold glass techniques used to decorate glass. You will learn to saw, cut, polish and sandblast glass in cold conditions and use possibilities in a sandblaster to give your work finish and a personal expression. Furnace formed glass (fusing and slumping) are techniques in which you learn to melt glass together (fusing) and bend glass over forms or melt glass in forms (slumping) These techniques can be used to produce bowls, platters, jewelry, glass pictures etc. Warm glass – Glassblowing and sandblasting In both the fall and spring, the glass furnace is switched on, and you can try your skill with working with warm glass. This is a unique chance to get an impression of an old handiwork by experiencing the intense and warm working conditions, which are so special for glass workshops. You learn how warm glass is blown and formed and how to work with colors and different decorative techniques. Ceramics Fragile and translucent porcelain, so fine and delicate that you can only whisper in its presence. Rough yellow, red, brown, black bricks that can build huge houses that endure hundreds of years and hammer an opera toward the sky. It is amazing what clay can do! In the ceramic workshop, you will be introduced to the basic techniques of handbuilding, throwing, working with plastermoulds and slipcasting. We will work with different types of clay and mix our own glazes. The school has got both an electric ceramic kiln, a kiln for firing rakuglazes and a wood kiln in which we fire both stoneware and porcelain. Firing a wood kiln is a very good way of learning about the process from clay to the finished ceramic object. The course varies from theory and practical work to regular discussions about aesthetics, design, tradition, and renewal. If you find one theme interesting –such as the Japanese tea ceremony or ancient American pottery, etc. or if for instance, you want to work with clay and a glazes from the island, then it is possible to do this. The most important thing though, is to have a great time with clay and good company in the workshop. Art Are you interested in pictures and visual culture, and want to challenge yourself, your skills and your performances? If so, the art course of Bornholm Folk High School is for you. In the subject arts you will be introduced to both traditional techniques, such as drawing, collage and painting and challenged with modern techniques, such as transferring images via projector, and working with digital image editing. You will learn about composition, theory of color and perspective, and much else that will sharpen your powers of observation and craftsmanship. We will analyze and discuss the image content, opinion and expression, concept and art appreciation. We are going to see lots of art, especially modern, and we will challenge our perception of what art is. Some of the tasks are traditional such. portrait painting and landscape studies. Other tasks are more free, like. making art installation inside or land art in the surroundings of the school. Photographing known objects from new angles or themes related to current projects at school or on the current art scene will inspire your image expression. It is not a condition of entry that you previously worked with pictures. The only prerequisite is curiosity and a desire to learn. Music Rhythmical ensemble You will be presented with various styles of song lyrics in both Danish and English. Here you can participate no matter how much or how little musical knowledge you possess. The work is focused primarily on playing and practicing different numbers until they swing and sound good. Some music theory can be studied, and there may be a possibility to listen to and discuss different types of music The school has a music room with instruments and a public address PA-system in order to satisfactorily cover the needs of the students to play in groups, both in teaching situations and in their spare time. The school also has the equipment necessary to make digital recordings with Macbook and Cubase. Chorus If there is interest, we will create a chorus. Here the focus is upon experiencing a joy with singing together. Notice the excitement you get by singing both at the top of your voice or with controlled sentiment, so that you get goose pimples on your arms. We sing both in unison and in parts. Music theory and ear training Here you will get the possibility to work with basic music theory – notes, rhythms, and harmony. If you plan on applying to a university, conservatory or music school, we will help you improve you possibilities for acceptance. The Chefs Kitchen Period: January until April Have you learned to prepare food at home, are you enthusiastic about food, or do you have dreams of becoming a chef and want to dip into the subject? Then this course is for you. Basic kitchen elements How should a fish be filleted? How do you broil a steak? Which knife do you use to remove the bone from a leg of lamb? What is the difference between a sauce and gravy? Why does an egg change in consistency when it is boiled? What is stock and bouillon? When does red cabbage become blue? All these questions and many more will be included in practical and theoretical instruction. Classic and global kitchen Veal, olives, meat and vegetable hash, and beef stew are good Danish classical dishes. Danish open-faced sandwiches are quite special, and we hold onto our Christmas traditions. You will learn about old Danish dishes from different parts of the country. Perhaps you have tasted them with your grandmother? In the kitchen you will work with old and new Danish recipes. At the same time, gastronomical borders will be broken, and traditions from other parts of the globe will give inspiration. Menu planning and setting the table You will learn to create a menu, whether this means daily meals or a party. It is of course, important how you mix the courses and what beverages you serve. Learn also how to set a table that is inspired by the food you serve. Emma Gad has not lived in vain; so therefore, we will also go over rules for good etiquette. Nutrition and Hygiene Nutrition and hygiene go hand in hand, and it is important to know the basic principles, both when you prepare food for yourself and others. Jewelry and metal art Jewelry is a part of our identity, a way to ornament our lives. It is an art to be able to find the perfect jewelry that gives the finishing touch,- the special and personal expression, which signals what you are. You can also break traditional boundaries and explore the bonds between the body and form in new ways. Jewelry and small sculptures You are to experiment with materials and techniques. Working with metal involves a broad selection of techniques: soldering, carving, brazing, rolling, casting, melting, forging, grinding, polishing, riveting, and many more. You learn to master the techniques, and at the same time, you will get the possibility to let your ideas be expressed in jewelry, sculptures or other objects. Teaching In order to become acquainted with the skill and its many tools and techniques, you will begin with a series of assignments. After this, the teaching will be varied in relation to your own tempo and your special interests. You can e.g. cast figures in different metals or make knives. You will build a good foundation with work in different materials such as silver, copper, brass, horn, bone, and wood. You will also get the possibility to experiment with styles and develop your personal expression in objects, which you yourself choose. We have a fully equipped workshop, which takes into consideration the working process, which is necessary for all good handicraft. Outdoor Do you love being in nature? Do you love to move and use your body? Then our Outdoor team may be for you. You are going on long bike rides , walks and shelter tours. We're going to explore what the nature of Bornholm has to offer and jointly tackle the challenges that nature offers us. It's a new team and you will therefore largely be involved in shaping the content. It is a unique opportunity to challenge yourself and try something new . Common Subjects Literature and Writing Workshop The subject of literature includes a biographical examination of Danish and foreign authors. The choice of these authors is made in a close collaboration with the students. An example: Martin Andersen Nexo’s biography. The study of a few of his poems, short stories, and the story about Pelle Erobreren. In the writing workshop, you place words on your own world. History of Music With a starting point in the history of European music, emphasis is placed on various styles with many music examples. Music examples are given in workshops with the purpose of placing a value on musical expression in a historical perspective. Psychology Subject are chosen through close work with the pupils. High School Evening These deal with creating a common forum where we meet to get an experience of community and solidarity. The weekly High School Evening on Wednesday night can include various activities such as songs, dance, play with various board games and other games. Bornholm in all directions Each Monday morning the school’s own bus makes a tour on the island of Bornholm. We try to enlarge the knowledge of the pupils about the special nature, geology and culture of Bornholm. Danish The purpose of the study of Danish is make pupils from Greenland and other countries able to communicate in useful Danish in everyday situations. The contents Is therefore practice in speaking, listening to, reading and writing Danish. English The purpose of the study of English is likewise to give pupils from Greenland and other countries the possibility to be able to communicate in useful English in everyday situations.
