Our first monthly membership meeting went
as expected; a little slow and tedious. By that
I mean we, as a group we needed to be a little
more on schedule. I was pleased that our
guest speaker Jason Alexander from DLNR
was very accommodating and patient with us;
we were borderline rude to him and I take full
responsibility for that. We all need to make the
necessary changes for a better start this New
Year.
At the last board meeting we all agreed that the
membership meetings will start promptly at
7:00 pm. We noticed that many of our members
were leaving the meeting prior to the auction.
We can only ascertain that this is due to not
starting our meetings on time, and they cannot
stay around to participate in our auctions. We
all have other things that are important to
us, and luckily the HAS is one of them. We
must stay the course and stick to the agenda
so we can readily run our club efficiently and
effectively. This way we can all enjoy the
benefits from it! Please do not be late for our
next monthly membership meeting.
I have noticed that the auction forms in
our newsletters aren’t being used. I can
only imagine that we have not seen it in the
newsletter or just forget to fill out the form for
the auction. We must use the auction form prior
to meetings to eliminate untimely recording
of the items being brought to the meeting.
When you bring your auction items please
bring the form so Larry Nakano can record all
items. Larry may have questions about your
donations. Also, we will not accept any bags
of fish or plants that are in leaking bags! If

HAS Policies
The Board of the Honolulu Aquarium Society has decided to enact the following policies
in effect for the year 2010. This is all an effort to encourage more participation amongst members to be beneficial to the society. We appreciate the effort that already is shown, however in the
interest of having a strong and active society we will be putting in place mandatory participation
in the following areas.
The way you can fulfill your obligation to the club is to do one of the following:

Write an article at least 1 paragraph long. The subject can be anything related to the
hobby. It could be a practical tip or something that you do that has had success or has
failed. [If assistance is needed, the board will be available for help].
-
Help Auction Chairperson with the auction as either a recorder or stage help for at least 2
meetings.
-
Help sell raffle tickets for 3 meetings.
-
Become committee members on the annual picnic and/or Christmas party.
-
Enter a tank in the show.
-
Be a member of the show committee and help set up and break down the show.
-
Help with the membership and Aloha committee for 3 months.
-
Do a program (talk for the club).
-
Join the Board for 3 months.
-
Donations (monetary, goods, etc.)
There will be consequences if you do not fulfill your obligations to the club. You will lose
your privileges for the auction and will not be allowed to bid on items. Obligations may be
excused and made up if explained to the board. Participation will be noted in the newsletter
and kept track on our participation binder.
There will be sign up sheets for the first three (3) meetings and as a member you will be
able to sign up for as many committees as you want. At the end of the third month, the board
will assign you to a committee.

you have fish that have barbels insure that you double bag them securely so they will not puncture the
bag. Please bring your donations at least 15 minutes prior to the meeting; it is very difficult for Larry to
log all items in a timely manner when he doesn’t have ample time to do so. If your items are donated
please check the donated box and the minimum bid amount will be $1.00. It is important to us that
you are clear about your donations so we don’t arbitrarily log the incorrect amount. Please follow the
instructions on the auction bid forms.
We all must refrain from viewing the auction items until all items have been completely recorded by
Larry and crew. There will be enough time for all to view the items prior to the auction. There will be
two tables set up; one with auction items (for viewing) and the other for accepting donations. Again,
all donors must stay with your donations until they have been recorded. Please give Larry Nakano your
cooperation and Kokua!!
During the presentations and auctions please refrain from talking, it does cause interference with the
program. If you do need to have a converstaion, please go outside. We need to conduct an orderly
meeting and not be rude to our guests and auction participants. I would greatly appreciate your Kokua!
I will be soliciting your help for auction crews, so don’t be surprise if I call upon you.
We will bring in new items for the auction each month so that we don’t have the same items to auction.
If you have a suggestion as to what you’d like to see at the auction (as long as we can afford it) please
contact any of our board members. We need to generate new interest in our auctions.
Our snacks during the break were provided by the Tanioka’s, Arakaki’s and Steven Fong. Thank you
for the wonderful goodies; I certainly enjoyed them!! I look forward to the monthly meetings because I
get to sample all the good stuff; even though my diet suffers.
As usual I forgot to thank everyone for their wonderful generosity, specifically George Yukitomo’s
donation for our Christmas Party. I got some of those fish George and they are still alive. Thanks for all
that you do for our club.
June Urada is the Honolulu Aquarium Society’s new corresponding Secretary. June will be responding to all correspondence sent to HAS locally and abroad. Thanks June for stepping up to the plate and
supporting our club.
We are in need of news items from our membership; our article locker is empty and I know that some of
you can’t wait to send Betty informative articles. We can use anything you may want to share with us.
It doesn’t have to be only on fish or plants, let us in on your views and or opinions.
Again, we all must bring to the plate anything to improve and help our club grow in the positive direction. Only you can make this happen. A lot of clubs and organizations fail because of inattentiveness
to its surroundings. We cannot just stay status quo and think all is well. It takes continued effort to
organize, plan and make a commitment to the success of a club. We must insure that the HAS enjoys
success and that it’s membership grows along with it.

How I Got Started In The Tropical Fish Hobby

I was always interested in anything fish related from fishing to aquarium keeping for as long as I can
remember. My dad was an aku boat fisherman and he used to raise and breed various tropical fish when
I was very young. He started with Platys for me to look at when I was an infant and eventually had up
to fifty tanks in the room that I now use. He raised Angels, Corys, and a few others that were available
in the early fifties. He eventually gave it up around 1960. I remember Jiro Matsui of Petland coming
over along with other hobbyist to take away the fish that he had when he quit. I later had two or three
saltwater aquariums from my 8th grade year to around my senior year at University of Hawaii. I then
gave up fish keeping until 2002 some 35 years later.
In 2002, while my father was battling stomach cancer, one of our neighbors, Mr. Mimuro told him to
get an aquarium and that he would give him some fish to look at. I bought a six gallon Eclipse (my first
mistake, too small!) and Mr. Mimuro gave him some guppies, one Cory and a couple of shrimp. Well,
you know guppies. They are prolific. I then purchased a three gallon Eclipse (my second mistake) to
put the fry into. Then another (mistake number three). My dad passed away in February of 2003 and
by then I was making regular visits to Petland Ala Moana and Kahala and various Pet’s Discount Stores.
I guess you can say that my dad continued the legacy of fish keeping in our family by indirectly getting
me “hooked”. I then started to clean-up the room that my dad once used to house his aquariums and
started to build a stand for the aquariums that I had planned to purchase, another 20-gallon long and
three 10-gallons. (Boy, I could have used my dad’s help because when he gave up fish keeping he also
started to work as a carpenter and he was a good finishing carpenter. And remember, he fit 50 aquariums in the same room that I now have 30. 50?! I could raise all kinds of fish with 20 more tanks.)
Anyway, during one on my visits to Petland Kahala I saw these beautiful dwarf cichlids and was told
that they were Apistogramma cacatuoides, a name that was totally Greek to me but somehow remembered. I went home and did some research on the internet and found out that they were a relatively
mild mannered cichlid that only got to about 3.5 inches. I had to get me some! Then on one of my next
visits, Petland had the Yellow-Gold form of these fish. I purchased the last pair. They somehow survived and actually spawned in my 20-gallon long community tank. That was it! I was hooked! Before
I knew it I was building more stands and running out of room fast. I currently have about 30 aquariums
of various sizes from 5-gallons up to 45-gallons in my fish room and another 21 tubs in the yard for my
guppies, Endler’s, swordtails, Moina and Daphnia. My girlfriend Irene is actually glad that I found a
(relatively) nice hobby to keep me out of trouble.
On one Sunday night in October of 2003 while I was at Petland Kahala, I saw Robert Lau and some
friends returning one of his planted tanks and asked them where it was coming from. I then learned
that I just missed one of the Honolulu Aquarium Society’s annual fish show. I did some research on the
internet and learned about the club and the meeting dates. Unfortunately, the website was not updated
from the previous year and I missed the January meeting. I joined the Honolulu Aquarium Society in
February 2004. That was it, not only was I hooked on fish but I found a whole bunch of people just like
me! Fish people! Via tropical fish I’ve made some good friends and met some very interesting and nice
people who have become great friends.

me.
