2016 BCCFA Conference - British Columbia Community Forest
2016 BCCFA Conference May 26 - 28, 2016 - Lake Cowichan, BC 2016 BCCFA Conference - Lake Cowichan, BC We are hosted this year by the Cowichan Lake Community Forest Co-operative (CLCFC) and Pacheedaht First Nation. Welcome to Lake Cowichan, the territories of the Lake Cowichan First Nation, the Cowichan Tribes and the Ditidaht First Nation. We are hosted this year by the Cowichan Lake Community Forest Co-operative (CLCFC) and Pacheedaht First Nation. The two groups have formed a joint venture called Qul:yit to apply for a new Community Forest Agreement, and this event is surely a celebration of their partnership and aspirations. CLCFC has been operating the province’s first forest co-operative for more than 20 years under a licence that is about to expire. The CLCFC and the Pacheedaht have formed a joint venture called Qul:yit, which means ‘‘eye over edge of water”, to apply for a long term Community Forest Agreement. The area proposed for the community forest is in Pacheedaht territory. A major focus of the annual conference is the opportunity for networking with community forest people from all over the province. BCCFA President Erik Leslie commented on the value of the event: “Each community forest is unique. The BCCFA conference is a great opportunity for community forest practitioners and supporters to learn from each other and to see how our host community forest is managed.” This three-day event will be centred in community facilities in Lake Cowichan and will include bus tours into forest operations in the area. Workshops and sessions will cover the technical and policy aspects of community forests. The Pacheedaht will be preparing a traditional feast for delegates followed by an address by Forests Minister Steve Thomson. The discussions that will take place are important to the BCCFA Board of Directors and staff as they set priorities for advocacy and for service to our members over the coming year. We hope you will share your knowledge, ask questions and be inspired. 2016 BCCFA Conference Sponsors Platinum - $5,000 + Gold - $2,000 - $4,999 Silver - $1,000 - $1,999 Otter Point Timber Bronze - under $1,000 Teal Jones Group Cowichan Lake Timber Town of Lake Cowichan Island Timberlands Hancock Forest Management Elks Lodge Lake Cowichan 293 Island Pacific Logging BCCFA2016ConferenceProgram ThursdayMay26 7:00am 8:30am–4:00pm 5:30pm-9:00pm 6:00pm-10:00pm Registrationdeskopenandbreakfastonyourownat ShakerMillRestaurant72CowichanLakeRoad FieldTrip–LunchintheField MeetatShakerMillRestaurant72CowichanLakeRoad Thefieldtripwillincludeavisittoa20yearoldcommunityforestloggingarea,current operations, localfacilities, includingthenewPacheedahtmillsiteandtheMesachie ResearchCentre.LunchwillbeonthebeachatPortRenfrewinthetraditionalterritoryof thePacheedahtFirstNation.
