This granted economic, political, and legal rights to the jurats, or aldermen, of Saint-Émilion. These local notables and magistrates were empowered with the town’s general administration. In exchange for these rights, England was granted the «privilège des Vins de Saint-Émilion». This meant that English merchants had priority over everyone else with regard to buying the wines of Saint-Émilion. The Jurade’s authority lasted until the French Revolution of 1789. In 1948, several winegrowers resuscitated the Jurade in the form of a vinous brotherhood – a group of ambassadors to spread the good word about Saint-Émilion wines far and wide. They also swore to do their utmost to guarantee the authenticity and quality of Saint-Émilion wines. The Jurade has done an excellent job of making Saint-Émilion better known. They also organise a Fête de Printemps (Spring Festival) in June and Ban des Vendanges (Vintage Festival) in September every year. At these times, members of the Jurade parade through the town in their traditional crimson robes reminiscent of the all-powerful aldermen of centuries past. Whether seen in broad daylight or underground, Saint-Émilion’s architectural heritage never fails to astonish and bewitch. A short history From the 9th to the 19th century, men worked inordinately hard to extract blocks of stones to construct buildings in the town of Saint-Émilion as well as nearby châteaux. This also accounts for the presence of some 200 km of underground galleries and the largest monolithic church in Europe. Limestone is everywhere, and accounts for soil that is exceptionally well-suited to winegrowing. Man has always adapted to this magnificent rolling countryside without attempting to transform it into something it isn’t, instead complementing it with harmonious architecture that blends in beautifully. The ochre light reflected from these buildings is overwhelmingly attractive and the stones seem to tell us a story well worth hearing… A friendly spirit reigns… Saint-Émilion is truly a magnificent open-air museum. It all started with a modest hermit… In the 8th century, a monk named Émilion from Vannes in Brittany chose to withdraw from the world in a place named Ascumbas (the town’s original name). 8 Émilion left his family and native Brittany to devote his life to solitude and prayer. He proved to be very kind and generous to the few people he came into contact with, and performed his fair share of miracles. His reputation soon spread far beyond the Dordogne Valley and many disciples came to be by his side. Émilion evangelised the local population, and created what went on to become a major monastic centre that his followers naturally named after him. A lasting gastronomic tradition Mentioning the name Saint-Émilion makes most people think of wine, but it also brings macaroons to mind to many others! This is yet another of our town’s gastronomic delights that has been handed down from generation to generation. The recipe goes back to the year 1620 when the Ursuline sisters established their convent in Saint-Émilion. This holy man died on 6 January of the year 767, having spent the last seventeen years of his life in his hermitage. The town of Saint-Émilion and its fabulous underground monuments grew up around this hermitage. 9 History is omnipresent in Saint-Émilion, imbuing the cobblestone streets and almost palpable during walking tours. Each stone, each vine leaf seems to call for your attention, and your taste buds will quiver with anticipation when you smell the fragrance of the town’s traditional macaroons. This delightful medieval village, in the heart of the worldfamous Bordeaux vineyards, has a cachet all of its own thanks to ubiquitous vineyards, superb wines, impressive monuments, and beautiful architecture. A town full of history on a rocky promontory, Saint-Émilion and its surrounding vineyards owe their originality to limestone soil. THE VINEYARDS OF THE JURISDICTION of Saint-émilion » 5,400 hectares (13,344 ACRES) » 860 winegrowers » Main grape variety: Merlot » 2 appellations: Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru A treat for the senses A LAND OF TRADITION Saint-Émilion’s outstandingly beautiful countryside, also responsible for producing prestigious wines, has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Contrasting soils Saint-Émilion’s exceptional wines are due to the great diversity of its terroirs. The amazing nuances can be attributed to remarkably varied geology (limestone, clay-limestone, gravel, and sandy soils) and a microclimate ideally suited to winegrowing. to the art of blending different proportions of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec with Merlot. This makes for a huge spectrum of aromas and flavours highly appreciated by wine lovers around the world. can attain, and its interaction with complementary grape varieties […] which add floral and spicy overtones». When young, Saint-Émilion is round, generous, fruity, and luscious, with red and black fruit aromas. With age, their power is transformed into finesse and elegance. Barrel ageing adds greater aromatic complexity with smoky, toasty, roasted hints. Bottle ageing further contributes to spicy, mineral qualities and truffle aromas. Over time, Saint-Émilion takes on an orangey, brick-red colour and displays an attractive complexity on the palate that invites another glass! 2009: the 10th anniversary of listing by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site This unique geology, combined with loving care in the vineyard, results in ripe, healthy (predominately Merlot) grapes. The infinite variety of Saint-Émilion wines is also due An international reputation The fact that the wines of Saint-Émilion are respected all over the planet is due in no small part to the great job done by the Jurade, whose actions have had a major impact in France and abroad. They also instituted a classification enabling wines in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation to attain status as a Grand Cru Classé, Premier Grand Cru Classé B, or Premier Grand Cru Classé A. As early as 1884, local producers established the first syndicat viticole (winegrowers association) in France. This classification is updated every 10 years. This was just one of many steps taken in Saint-Émilion over the years to enhance the production, promotion, and sale of the town’s world-class wines. Diverse terroirs, the large number of producers, and varying viticultural and winemaking techniques explain the huge variety of Saint-Émilion wines. If Saint-Emilion is not one wine, but many, what makes them Saint-Émilion? Thanks to tastings organised by professionals, you can learn how to recognise the typical characteristics of SaintÉmilion wines – the way they look, smell, and taste – as well as how to describe aromas and flavours. While waiting to experience this firsthand, here are a few pointers. As Henri Faivre, an oenologist in Bordeaux, explains «the hallmark of Saint-Emilion is, more than anything else, a reflection of the great depth and expressiveness Merlot A unique and harmonious creation of both nature and mankind, the Saint-Émilion landscape bears witness to centuries of history. According to UNESCO, «the Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion is an outstanding example of an historic vineyard landscape that has survived intact and in activity to the present day.» Well aware of its special status, the Community of Communes of the Jurisdiction of Saint-Emilion asked to be listed as a World Heritage Site. In 1999, for the first time ever, a vineyard landscape was acknowledged as a «cultural landscape» worthy of listing as a World Heritage Site. Since then, the Tourist Office of the Jurisdiction of Saint Émilion, the Community of Communes of the Jurisdiction of Saint-Emilion, and the Conseil des Vins have united their efforts to help several million visitors discover the rich heritage and beauty of their region. The Syndicat, which has since changed its name to Conseil des Vins de Saint-Émilion (Wine Council), works hard to maintain and guarantee the origin, authenticity, and quality of Saint-Émilion wine. 11 10 The Syndicat Viticole created two appellations: SaintÉmilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The Jurisdiction of Saint-émilion The «cultural landscape» of eight communes comprising the former Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.This area consists of a plateau, hills, and a plain covered with vines and woods, crossed by streams and a river, and dotted with churches, châteaus, manor houses, windmills, etc. This landscape is so unique and complex that major efforts have been made to maintain it for future generations. As a protected site, Saint-Emilion and the surrounding countryside will be able to preserve the architectural heritage and natural beauty that have merited this prestigious distinction by UNESCO. Saint-Émilion Saint-Laurent des Combes An architectural gem… The «green lungs» of the Jurisdiction… A magnificent medieval town surrounded by ramparts (listed historic monument), the town is famous not only for its unique architectural heritage, but also for the quality of its wines.
