REDEFINING RUSTIC A stunning spa/retreat in Jackson Hole, WY creates the perfect marriage of the natural landscape with luxury accomodations. Ironhaus designed and manufactured fireplaces, fireplace doors, lighting, railing, and architectural sculputres that capture this aesthetic... PROJECT: The Four Seasons Resort ARCHITECT: HKS Hill-Glazier Studio INTERIOR DESIGN: Brayton-Hughes Design Studio CONSTRUCTION: Jacobson Construction CLIENT: LDW Resort & Hotel Development The Four Seasons Resort in Jackson Hole, WY sits in a pristine valley, surrounded by the glorious Teton Mountains. The area is distinguished by sweeping vistas of the nearby towering Tetons, alpine forests, and wooded aspen groves. The design and architecture of the resort pull those elements of the natural landscape into the building, creating the perfect marriage of rustic and luxury. During the middle of the construction process, Ironhaus GM and Lead Designer, Tim Campbell was approached by the onsite project manager, Keith Lamparter. As Keith explains: “We had other people contracted for the work who couldn’t do what we needed. Tim’s name was passed along to me, and he had some work on display in a showroom in Jackson at the time. I went and looked at his work and then met with him. We originally had him contracted for a small amount of work and we were so pleased that we gave him more and more work on the job.” Keith and his team sat down with Tim. “The concept they wantes was rustic, organic, curved lines and natural angles, really bringing the natural landscape into the resort,” says Tim. Tim was inspired by the aspen groves so prevalent to that landscape. “They defined that organic element, conveying rest, and fulfillment.” The aspen leaf motif was carried throughout, in the railing, doors, and the main entrance where Tim made full sized iron aspen sculptures creating an aspen grove as guests enter the resort. Ironhaus de- signed and built all the fireplaces in the public living spaces, the fireplace doors in the condos, as well as outdoor lighting for the front entrance to the resort. The result was a cohesive look and feeling to the ironwork throughout, bringing in the organic elements of the natural landscape, and making the guests feel as if they were not only experiencing the outdoors, but completely immersed in the outdoors. The Four Seasons project cemented Ironhaus’s reputation in the industry for their unparalleled craftsmanship, authentic design, and professionalism. Following the project, Tim challenged himself to think about the kind of company he wanted to operate, and how he wanted his artisan’s to work. Tim explains: “There are always challenges on a large scale project where you have various builders, subcontractors, specialty contractors, designers, and management all wanting what is best for the project. The challenge for a blacksmith shop, or any custom shop like Ironhaus is that the work we do is so specific it requires being onsite for installation. By the nature of how it works, you’re waiting for the guy ahead of you to finish his work, and he’s waiting for the guy ahead of him. A lot of times you’re sitting around on a job site, just waiting. For the homeowner, or the buidling owner it means a delay and added cost. Also, there is very little synergy between the trades with everyone doing their own little piece of the job. It’s during the installation where you run into problems of making it all work together. I can build something to spec, but if the guy ahead of me is a little off, then my work will be a little off. To me it seemed like there had to be a better way to do things.” Tim wanted to be able to do the custom metalwork that he loved, while making products that architects, builders, and homeowners could easily use and incorporate into their designs or homes. To achieve this Tim decided to focus on a core line of products that he could design, and build in his studio in Montana, and ship to anywhere in the world, that would be easy for the end-user to install, and would fit with their existing system or a new system. Ironhaus focused on fireplaces, fireplace doors, screens and freestanding screens. Clients would get a custom fit, design and style, along with color and finishes options, designed, built and shipped in four weeks. To date, Ironhaus has a 100% delivery rate. Tim also looked at ways to streamline production in his shop. He wanted to empower his team of artisans by having them each focus on what they do best, and becoming specialists at that one thing. “Traditionally, everyone in the shop knows how to do everything, but not well enough to be really good at it,” says Tim. Doing things this way has improved the production process, as well as the quality and crafstmanship of the work Ironhaus produces. It has also allowed Tim to focus on product design and development. “Now that we have a process that works well, and a team of specialists, we can start to reintroduce things like lighting, and introduce new products as well.” www.ironhaus.com telephone: 866-554-0463 email: sales@ironhaus.com Tim’s sketches showing the initial aspen motif that was incorporated through the metalwork Ironhaus did for the project. Inspired design. Unparalleled craftmanship. Easy installation. Seamless integration Ironhaus will announce a line of outdoor fire features including fire pits, and fire tables. They’re also designing and developing a line of range hoods, iron doors, and adding to their fireplace surround offerings. “Because what we really do best is custom ironwork,” says Tim Ironhaus has always valued its working relationship with architects, builders and designers, providing customers and clients with a complete custom experience from inspiration to installation. In the weeks leading up to the International Builders Show, Tim and his December, 2013 team are working hard to design and build a new line of custom iron architectural elements for the home. “It’s nice looking back at what you’ve done, and exciting to see what you can do in the future,” explains Tim. “We’re looking forward to doing some great things with architects, builders and designers this coming year.” If you’d like to read more about how Ironhaus combines custom work with plug-n-play design to help residential and commercial clients like the Four Seasons Resort read our white paper: Lean Manufacturing and Custom Design.
