eliminating racism empowering women ywca Dear Friends, Thank you for your contribution to the YWCA of Trenton. By attending our annual Gala In Celebration of Women, you help support the YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and to empower women. Tonight, we honor three remarkable women: Diane Marshall, Phyllis Stoolmacher, and Andrea Sussman. Each of them embody a true passion for doing for others while leading by example. The past 12 months have been months of incredible growth for the YW. In partnership with our sister association, the YWCA Princeton, we successfully co-launched our first annual Stand Against Racism this past April 11. The goal of the Stand Against Racism is to bring awareness that racism still exists in our communities and that it cannot be ignored or tolerated. Much to our joy, 60 organizations partnered with us, attracting over 5,000 participants across 10 municipalities in Mercer County. To learn more about this exciting new initiative, please visit www.StandAgainstRacism.org. We invite you to deepen your involvement with the YWCA of Trenton. Through our many programs and services to the community, we continue to improve the lives of thousands of people every year. We are very grateful for your presence here this evening. We couldn’t continue this great mission of eliminating racism and empowering women without your generosity. Melissa L. Weeks President of the Board Jose A. Griffith Community Service Award is given for outstanding volunteer service in honor of Meta A. Griffith, a remarkable woman who has long served the Trenton community as a successful businesswoman, community leader and dedicated volunteer. Mrs. Griffith, in her quiet way, has incorporated volunteer service as a necessity, not an option, in her life. She has been a steadfast friend to the YWCA and many other area organizations, generously and unselfishly sharing her time, talent and resources. Ethel downing johnson The Ethel Downing Johnson Memorial Award was created as a memorial to Ethel Downing Johnson, a beloved YWCA Board member from 1986 until her untimely death in 1992. Mrs. Johnson exemplified the values at the heart of the YWCA mission -- that of peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. She brought a sincere interest and balanced perspective to the YWCA and is fondly remembered for her warmth, dedication, humor and her sincere interest in each and every individual. YWCA of Trenton’s Annual Gala/ Ethel Downing Johnson Memorial Award Presented to a woman who has demonstrated an earnest and sincere commitment to the mission and purpose of the YWCA of Trenton Diane Marshall /Celebrating Leadership Like the namesake of this award, Diane Marshall embodies the values at the heart of the YWCA mission -- that of peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. Her approach to making a difference in our community is a hands on one. She has been a dedicated Board member and volunteer for the YWCA of Trenton for many years, proudly seeing the renovation of Dunham Hall during her tenure on the Board. She also serves as chairperson of the Mercer County Commission on the Status of Women and volunteer for the Cancer Society of Mercer County and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Ms. Marshall’s integrity, thoughtfulness and willingness to take on tough issues make her an invaluable member and voice for the YWCA of Trenton. Under her leadership, the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank has turned 80,000 lbs. of food into 1.8 million lbs. of food and has ensured that 18,000 families and individuals in Mercer County are fed. Striving to create equality in a world where some live in such plenty while so many are without, Ms. Stoolmacher challenges and inspires corporations and others to contribute all they can ... and then more. The YWCA of Trenton honors Ms. Stoolmacher not only for what she has achieved in her career, but for what she achieves for others each and every day. YWCA of Trenton’s Annual Gala/ Meta A. Griffith Community Service Award Presented to a woman who has effectively recognized and addressed community needs through exemplary volunteer service Andrea Sussman /Celebrating Leadership Andrea Sussman demonstrates her commitment to the City of Trenton and Mercer County both in her professional career and her service to the community.
