Clonmel firm presents life-saving defribillators to
clubs and organisations

Thirty-four clubs and organisations in communities throughout Tipperary and neighbouring
counties have received life saving defribillator machines from the staff of Boston Scientific in
Clonmel.
Employees of the American multi-national plant that manufactures pacemakers raised more
than €40,000 last year to purchase Automatic External Defribillators (AEDs) for social clubs
and community organisations in Tipperary, Waterford, Kilkenny, Cork and Clare.
Employees within the company were given the opportunity to look out into their own local
communities, assess the need for an AED and make a nomination on behalf of a club or
organisation they were part of.
The staff ran marathons, climbed mountains, grew strange looking moustaches and
organised bake sales along with many other events throughout the year to raise the money
for the AEDs.
The medical equipment, which help people suffering heart attacks, were presented to
representatives of the 34 benefitting organisations at a ceremony in Boston Scientific last
Friday afternoon.
Among the South Tipperary AED recipients were Clonmel Celtic Football Club, Newcastle
GAA Club, Carrick On Suir Taekwon-Do Association, Cahir Scouts Club and the Nagle
Centre Cashel.
Boston Scientific Engineering Director John Cooney said their annual charity campaign
allows the company to give back to the local community.
“It is something that is valued greatly by our employees, a large portion of who live here.
“Despite the economic pressures that have impacted every person in Ireland over the last
year, our employees again reached deep into their pockets throughout 2010 to give their
hard earned cash towards various fundraisers that made the provision of the 47 AEDs
possible.”
This was the fourth year in a row that Boston Scientific Clonmel’s 700 strong workforce has
raised more than €40,000 in aid of their annual site charity.
In the past, the funds raised have gone to CARE and Cuan Saor, both based in Clonmel
and the Camphill Community based in Carrick-on-Suir.
Employees of Boston Scientific have once again placed their charity hats back on for 2011.
They have decided that all proceeds from their activities this year will be donated to the
volunteer group, Carrick-on-Suir River Rescue.
