Winter/Spring - Hospice of Davidson County
Winter/Spring 2015 Volume 30, Issue 1 Surroundings A Newsletter for Friends of Hospice of Davidson County 30th Service Year Anniversary Celebration Hospice of Davidson County received its license to operate from the State of North Carolina on July 23, 1985, and one week later on July 30, 1985, the agency accepted its first patient. The agency operated out of office space donated by two pharmacists and six doctors located beneath the Community Drug Store on West Center Street in Lexington. During the first year of operation, Hospice of Davidson County served 44 patients with an average daily census of 7 patients. In 2014, the agency’s 29th service year, the agency served 788 patients with an average daily census of 107 patients. In 1988, three years following its opening, Hospice of Davidson County relocated to much larger office space within the same Community Drug complex on West Center Street. In 1991, the agency became Medicare certified; and in May 1993, the offices moved again to 524 State Street. In March 2009, Hospice of Davidson County moved to the current campus located at 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, after completing a successful $3.4 million capital campaign for the construction of a new Administrative/Home Care building and Davidson County’s only inpatient unit, The Henry Etta and Bruce Hinkle Hospice House. On Tuesday, April 28th, Hospice of Davidson County will hold a celebration dinner beginning at 6 pm at the Rittling Conference Center on the campus of Davidson County Community College. Details for the evening are still being finalized and will be announced soon, along with Message from the CEO 2 information concerning tickets and reservations. A part of the evening’s From the Board President 2 events will include a presentation by the agency’s Board of Directors of the New Board Members Welcomed 3 Founders Award and the Community Partner Award. During a recent staff meeting, I was sharing highlights from our 2014 year. Overall, it had been a challenging year with increased competition, additional reporting requirements and budget reductions. It had, never-the-less, been a very successful year for our agency with some significant accomplishments. In 2014, our agency cared for 788 patients; an increase of over 10% from prior year. Of those served, 377 were cared for at the Hinkle Hospice House; a 12% increase from 2013. Our efforts to educate the community and help individuals and families access our services resulted in a 30% increase in referrals from patients, families and friends. Our focus on strengthening partnerships with area nursing and skilled-care facilities had also resulted in an increase in residents served in their facility “home” by over 13%. Last year, we were honored to continue to receive strong community support with financial giving at the highest in several years. Our Partners In Care, corporate giving program, saw strong growth and we launched a new donor giving society, The Founder’s Circle, which reconnected many who had been supporters of the Hinkle Hospice House capital campaign. We also received positive feedback from families and caregivers with results from the Family Evaluation of Hospice Care surveys exceeding the national average satisfaction rates by 13%. And while survey results are key, equally meaningful are the comments from those that we serve that come to us in the form of personal letters. One family recently shared: “In a few moments all was quiet and my father was at peace. My older daughter, my husband and I had spent a meaningful last day with my dad … We were in familiar surroundings with a wonderful nursing staff we already respected, only now, we had superior guidance, care and comfort from the most wonderful medical support team available.” – Russell and Tina Compton As we enter into our 30th year of providing hospice services, we extend our sincere thanks to all who help us sustain our mission and to our community for the opportunity to care for those facing terminal illness and suffering from loss. From the Board Chair . . . We are looking forward to the 30th Anniversary of Hospice of Davidson County. Several events are being planned for the celebration and we hope that you will make plans to join us in the festivities. The agency has come a long way and continues to make substantial strides in serving our community. Like other non-profits, we continue to seek financial support from our Founder’s Circle and Partners In Care to sustain our mission. The generous support at all levels is much needed and appreciated. Our fundraising season is rapidly approaching and we are counting on your support as we make plans for our 8th Annual Hospice of Davidson County Benefit Golf Tournament to be held at Sapona Ridge Country Club on April 23, 2015. Registration for this event is forthcoming. The 8th Annual Hospice of Davidson County Ride for Angels Rochelle C. Bobo Board Chair 2014-2015 will be held July 18, 2015, at Denton FarmPark. Finally, we continue to extend our reach into the community via board representation, as well as through the personal testimonies of those who have experienced the exemplary level of care that our agency provides. We are extremely blessed to have dedicated staff to carry out our mission, as well as continue to provide quality and compassionate care to those we serve. 2 New Members Welcomed to HODC’s Board of Directors Cyrus Bush Kenneth Hall Maria Photopoulos Cyrus Bush is the Director of Pastoral Care at Novant Health: Thomasville Medical Center, where he serves as Chaplain. Each December, our volunteers make a commitment of uplifting the holiday spirit by caroling for our Hinkle Hospice House and Home Care patients. We ask each Home Care patient if they would like a visit from carolers and those that accept are in for a real treat! This year, we were graciously provided vans and drivers from Heath Church, Mount Zion Wesleyan Church, and Mary Myers Children’s Center. Each year, our carolers meet at Hinkle Hospice House and sing in both halls for our patients. This year, we divided our volunteers into three groups and split up throughout the county to fulfill our caroling requests. This has always been one of my favorite events, as the instant reaction and gratitude we receive from such a small act is tremendous. The smile on our patients’ faces 4 and hearing them sing along with us is truly unforgettable. We leave a goody bag at each home containing fruit and/ or baked goods that is brought in by our volunteers. We would love to have more groups to join us in the future, and we also need additional drivers and vans. If you have a group interested in participating in the 2015 Caroling event, please let us know. All ages are welcome and everyone must sign a confidentiality agreement and publicity release prior to the event. Being a good singer is not necessary--the only requirement is having a joyful heart and willingness to share your time with others. Please consider joining us for our 2015 Caroling event on Saturday, December 5th from 1:00pm5:00pm. Sumiko Harmon may be reached at 336.475.5444 or sharmon@HospiceOfDavidson.org Volunteer Events Every year during National Volunteer Appreciation Week, Hospice of Davidson County invites our volunteers to a special recognition luncheon. We have continued to partner with the familiar mother and daughter ceramic artists, Coille and Molly Hooven. The heart- shaped ornament has an intricate design and is inscribed, “Forever in our hearts”, an endearing way to remember loved ones who have passed away. The ornament will also be a special way to remember close friends or family at special times during the year. The cost of the ornament is $12 or you may also purchase a display stand with the ornament for a total of $15. The ornament is available for purchase at our Administrative Home Care building anytime during regular business hours or you may order by telephone and pay by credit card.
