C Purchase a 2004 NCHA membership and be automatically entered to win a new Chevy Duramax Diesel crew-cab truck. Each time you win a check in an NCHA-approved event during the 2004 point-year you automatically are entered again. indy Smith, of Nogal, NM, and Janet Westfall, of Los Olivos, CA, tied for the win of the Non-Pro Derby first go-round yesterday with 219 points. Westfall’s calm demeanor, following a riveting run on Jeeps Posi Traction, belied her tension. “I get a little nervous because he’s my husband’s horse and he’s showing him in the open,” she explained. “He can do so much and I don’t practice on him or anything. I just ride down there. “But I feel confident that I have a good horse that’s going to turn every time, and he’s got tons of eye appeal, if I get the right cows.” The Westfalls bred and raised the gelded son of their 17-year-old stallion Genuine Jeep and Russ trained the horse and rode him as reserve champion of the 2004 NCHA Super Stakes. “The whole drive home from the Super Stakes we were beaming because we were so proud,” said Janet. “He’s our horse and we double up on him, but he’s like Russ’s baby. He’s been one Continued on page 2 Three riders tied with 218, the second-highest score from the first go-round of Non-Pro competition: Scott Ferguson, left, on Laredo Blue; Dean Holden, center, on Alittle Street Smart; and Tim Drummond, right, on Moms Stylish Socks. Smith & Westfall, continued from page 1 of the best that we’ve had.” Russ Westfall qualified Jeeps Posi Traction for the Derby Open Semi-Finals with go-round scores of 214.5 and 215. “He can handle (doubling up),” Janet pointed out. “We’ve ranched on him since he was two. One time, Russ gathered cattle all day long on him with our son, Brandon, who was two, in the front of the saddle.” Janet, who has career earnings of more than $320,000, was reserve champion of the 2000 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity on CD Royal. Smith and Macho mucho good Cindy Smith and Macho Little Lena also found the cows to their liking, yesterday. “You just hope you get a good one that lets you show your horse,” said Smith, who rode her homebred son of Smart Little Lena deep in the second bunch and earned 219 points. “I had a lot of good help picking them.” Macho Little Lena was trained by Ronnie Rice, who rode him as one of the first go-round leaders in the NCHA Open Futurity. Smith was champion of Live Music with Brandon Ryder Saturday, July 24 • 5 to 7 p.m. 95.9 The Ranch Stage in the Exhibit Hall the Non-Pro Bonanza Futurity on the stallion and won a go-round on him at the Breeders Invitational, where Mike Mowery also rode him for a go-round win in the open division. Smith and Mike Mowery will double up on Macho Little Lena for the rest of the year. “Mike hasn’t had him that long, but they’re a great team,” noted Smith. “This is fun for me, too, but I’ve got to go through some more rounds. I have confidence in him every time. I never worry that he’s not going to do his job. You say it’s your birthday! These NCHA members are celebrating their birthday today. Poplarville, MS James E Worsham .Pleasant Plain, OH Among yesterday’s leaders in the first day of Derby Non-Pro competition were, left to right, Mike Rutherford, with 216 aboard Smart Playin; Vicki Bass, with 216 on Junies Unlimited; and Sue Barry, shown with daughter, Cara, on Playin Tag, High School Rodeo championship on Dual Nurse, as well as having claimed reserve in the NCHA Youth Scholarship Cutting. Shayla is the mother of the Smith’s first grandchild, four-monthold Abby Day Morris, who was at Will Rogers yesterday to watch the action with her family. Dual Nurse was trained by Lloyd Cox, who also trained and rode Dual Rey, by Dual Pep out of Nurse Rey. “I always tell Lloyd that he did the best job in the world,” said Smith. “I got her right after she turned four and she stayed good and got better and better, despite all the people that rode her. I give her full credit for allowing us to be able to come and do this.” It was Mike and Michelle Mowery who convinced the Smiths that they should breed Dual Nurse to Smart Little Lena. “It was a high stud fee and a scary thing for us to do,” Smith admitted. “But we went ahead and did it. I give the Mowerys the credit. “We think he’s going to be a real breeding horse — with the way he is built and his mind and natural cow sense and ability. We’ve hung on to him for that reason and also because we believe in his genetics.” The Smiths have two three-year-old full sisters, as well as a three-year-old full brother to Macho Little Lena and, according to Smith, “They’re all naturals.” Janet Westfall and her gelding Jeeps Posi Traction tied with Cindy Smith and Macho Little Lena to win the first go-round; Jeeps Posi Traction is also an Open Semi-Finalist under Russ Westfall. Smith and Westfall, continued from page 2 I just have to worry about doing my job. “He loves to cut. He likes to stick his face down in front of a cow and block it. He’s a lot like his mother.” Smith and her husband, Wes, raised Macho Little Lena out of Dual Nurse, a Dual Pep daughter out of Nurse Rey. Smith learned to show on Dual Nurse and qualified her for the NCHA World Finals in Amarillo, this year. Shayla Smith Morris, Cindy and Wes’ daughter, has won the National CUTTERS! $500 Shopping Spree Sign up for the drawing in the Exhibit Hall before Saturday, July 24 Must be present to win.
