See pages 12, 17 and 18 for more information Editor’s Letter I WALK MY TWO DOGS EVERY DAY – once in the morning before I go to work and another after dinner. They need their physical activity as do I. When I first started this regimen, it was hard. Some days, I felt like it was the last thing I wanted to do. But soon, something strange happened. The days I skipped the walk, my body felt lethargic and out of sorts. I realized that when I started my day off with a walk, I truly felt energized the rest of the day. The evening is a great time to walk them, too. I get to be outside, smelling the clean air, going over my day in my head. I can feel my muscles stretch and work as I walk up and down the hills in my neighborhood, and I come home feeling tired, but good. Just that little burst of activity has come a long way in my life. I feel more alert. I don’t get sick as often, and I even feel like trying new things, like swimming and riding my bike. It gives me a sense of accomplishment knowing that I am giving my body a physical workout. Try it yourself! Get out there and get active. You’ll be glad you did! Ten tips to help you include physical activity into your daily life RUN, JUMP, SKIP, CLIMB! Whether you are surfing, skiing, hiking or even just talking a walk around the block, it’s important to keep yourself moving. Start today and feel the benefits. O UR BODIES WERE DESIGNED TO MOVE – to stretch, walk, run, and jump. Those who are physically active are less likely to develop some chronic diseases than adults who are inactive. Everyone can benefit from a physically active lifestyle. Here’s how you can incorporate it into yours! 4 1. START SLOWLY AND BUILD UP 2. GET YOUR HEART PUMPING If you are just starting a physical activity – even if it’s simply taking your dog for a walk – build up slowly. This will help to prevent any injury. After a few weeks, increase how often and how long you are active. It’s recommended to do at least two and a half hours each week of physical activity that requires moderate effort. Try things like brisk walking, biking, swimming, and hiking. Spread activities over the week, but do them at least ten minutes at a time if you can. 3. MAKE ACTIVE CHOICES DAILY 4. STRENGTHEN YOUR BODY Take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for a 10-minute walk on your lunch break, or park further away from a store or your home and walk. Doing something is better than doing nothing. Do strengthening activities twice a week – things like lifting weights, doing push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups, and working with resistance bands – to build up your body. Source: www.choosemyplate.gov 5 Feature Story (Continued) 5. FIND OUT WHAT YOU ENJOY There are many, many ways to be active. Discover what feels right for you. There is so much to choose from, whether it’s walking, hiking, riding your bike, swimming, gardening, yoga – the list goes on. 6. SET GOALS/TRACK PROGRESS Plan your activity ahead of time and keep records. A great way to meet your goals is to write them down or find a helpful phone app. “Fitbit” activity trackers are also great for recording your miles walked, steps taken, and calories burned. 6 7. GRAB A FRIEND 8. INCREASE YOUR TIME When participating with friends or family, you may find you enjoy the activity more than you would alone. Join one of our fitness or walking classes. Build a support network because the encouragement alone will keep you going! Once you get used to regular physical activity, try to increase your weekly active time. The more time you spend being physically active, the more health benefits you will receive. 9. INCREASE YOUR EFFORT 10. HAVE FUN! Once you have been moderately active for awhile, try adding more intense activities! Turn a brisk walk into a jog, swim or ride your bike faster, or participate in aerobic dance. Physical activity should not be a chore. It can help you feel better about yourself and the way you live your life. Choose activities you enjoy and that fit into your life. 7 Health and Wellness Health and wellness classes are open to all Regal Medical Group, Lakeside Community Healthcare and ADOC Medical Group members Better Bones Every 50 seconds, someone in America has a bone fracture caused by osteoporosis.
