Road safety at DPS Patna - Safety and Mobility For All
ROAD SAFETY Presented by DPS PATNA are not lucky enough… One person dies in every 4 minutes DPS PATNA That is why we took up this PROJECT The YOUR ideas YOUR initiatives project has been designed and developed by P.A.U. Education and Renault in coordination with authors B. Bruun Jensen, J. Magne Jensen, N. Larsen, V. Simovska from the educational project ©RoSaCe Road Safety Cities in Europe and developed with the support of the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport of the European Commission. DPS PATNA The ancient city of Pataliputra appears to have lost its sheen in modern times with its miniature name Patna. Even though Patna holds the record of selling largest number of four wheelers even, its roads are in shabby condition. The situation is further compounded with encroachment by vendors often in connivance with the petty police officials, stray animals moving on the roads and absolute disregards to the traffic rules by people in general. Off and on gaping man holes and ditches make the roads of Patna a rider’s nightmare. The traffic scenario reaches its rock bottom when there are political demonstrations and strikes causing road blockades leading to crawling cars, blaring of horns, smoke and dust all around. The students of Delhi Public School, Patna decided to adopt a multi- pronged strategy to tackle the problem of traffic congestion and road safety. DPS PATNA The first part of the project targets to identify various burning issues apropos road safety and mobility from schools to streets. The issues undertaken by DIPSITES (students of Delhi Public School, Patna) were twofold: 1. 2. Issues concerning the school Issues concerning the street DPS Patna The DIPSITES found two major problems affecting their normal academic orientation. Located in the lush green ambience of Danapur military Cantonment, DPS Patna boasts of a rare ambience where learners sharpen their knowledge virtually in the lap of nature with the Rabi and Kharif crops like Wheat and Paddy being grown round the year peppered with seasonal vegetables and fruit in between. The school campus itself is a real feast for botanists with tens and hundreds of flora species planted within its sprawling campus. Above all, the Danapur Cantonment with its abundant greenery is a near perfect haven for migratory birds from all across the world thereby imparting a connoisseur’s delight to the would-be-ornithologists. However, the school faced some serious traffic related problems from the beginning of its inception in 1998. DPS Patna DPS Patna The problems:1. Traffic Congestion as the approach road between Danapur Cantonment and the school is quite narrow enabling only one vehicle to pass one time. This often caused inordinate delays in the commencement of Academic classes. Everyday roughly 2400 students reach the campus availing school transport or in their own personal vehicles. Managing a fleet of 64 buses besides hundreds of cars and SUVs every morning and noon indeed was a tough task to handle. 2. The problem of traffic congestion got compounded on certain occasion like OPEN HOUSE (Parent Teacher Meet) when the school campus would literally be flooded with thousands of personal vehicles making the entire exercise next to impossible. DPS Patna Brainstorming The school management, parents, student„s council members and teachers together decided to resolve the problem to ease out the congestion ensuring the smooth and timely conduction of academic classes. How can we ease out the ticklish problem? What alternative arrangements can be made to ensure optimum presence of parents in Open House without scaring them out due to nasty traffic congestion amid bonking of power horns? Ideas began pouring in as if someone has thrown a pebble in the pond causing ripples all around. “Why not conducting Open House more number of times with less number of parents being called in?” “Let them park their vehicles outside the Cantonment area itself making them walk down to the school.” “Can„t we go for virtual Open House with online interaction between parents and teachers?” DPS Patna DPS Patna Solution-I: Differential Time Schedule for bus commuters and the Supervision children (those who come by their own vehicle) a time gap of 1-20 minutes created between the two to minimize simultaneous arrival of more than one vehicles on the connecting road. The Transport Incharge, Mr. Ramashankar said, “We had to do something concrete and substantial as it was causing unnecessary delays in the commencement of the academic session every day. The Principal, Mr. B. Vinod appears to be a relieved man as regular academic session is in full swing. Solution-II: To tackle the problem of the traffic jams created during the days of Open House, it was mutually agreed to allot different timings to different set of students according to their roll numbers. Thus, roll 1 to 10 of a particular class was allotted a particular time say 8 to 8.30 am, roll 11 to 20 were allotted 8.30 to 9 am and likewise. This helped reduce thethorny problem of traffic congestion especially during the Open House sessions. DPS Patna 2.Issues concerning the street There has been complete apathy regarding use of seat belts in Patna. Most of the drivers donot use seat belts. One reason ascribed is the poor average speed of vehicles due to traffic congestion as many of drivers don„t feel the urge of using safety belt. They can never cross 40 kmph speed on any road of Patna. However, if this holds water, all the bikers should also be exempted from wearing helmets as what is true for motorists is equally true for bikers. Initiatives from DPS: The students of DPS Patna decided to conduct a road awareness campaign on Dak Buglow roundabout, the busiest junction in Patna on 12th May, 2015 The aim was to sensitize Patnites about the necessity of using Seat belts as a matter of habit so that even when they go on a long drive, they must use the seat belts.
