The commencement speaker spoke of those difficult times and parts of life when the world just doesn’t make any sense. What can and should you do during these times? The following day we heard the horrific news from Orlando, and suddenly the speaker’s question seemed more pertinent than ever. While I can’t answer his question as eloquently as he did, I can share my understanding. We simply carry on to do what we know is right, to do what needs to be done. In short, to continue to work to make this world a better place. In our small way, this is what our Vinland community does every day, all year long. Consider this past year alone: 44 certificated teachers and 36 classified support staff working each day for your kids. Fall Carnival and Trick or Treat Street events in the fall, drawing hundreds of families. Monthly Storytime events in our library for K-3 families. Ready Relief food packing to support our emergency supplies as well as third world nations. Being awarded a third Washington Achievement Award, this year for the progress of our Spanish-speaking students in our Dual Language program. The addition this year of Mrs. Anderson, our Academic and Behavior Intervention Coach. Frequent recognition of our students’ good choices through our Best Fin Forward and Dolphin awards. Regularly scheduled celebration assemblies to honor student success. Strong growth by K-4 students served in our LAP reading program and in STAR scores in nearly all grade levels in both reading and math. Successful school auction, raising funds to support multiple school improvement efforts including a new playground installation (coming this summer!). Grade level music performance assemblies, showcasing the talents and effort of our students in Mr. Orando’s music class. Breakfast Book Club for our 4th and 5th graders, held monthly to encourage and promote independent reading. Choir and Garden Club offered as before and after-school activities. Assemblies throughout the year, from Veterans Day student readers and Tap Root Theater to the Toy Maker and Reptile Man. This list is still only a sampling. We are here to support your kids, and we appreciate all that you do to help us in this important work. When some parts of our world don’t make sense, we can’t let those parts define us. The work listed above is what we do, it is who we are. Thank you for this past year, and we look forward to serving you again next year. Have a wonderful summer with your kids. Field Day at Vinland Elementary Friday June 12th Students will compete in events that they’ve been practicing in P.E.
