Heidi’s Watch Repair Rolex Trained Technician Heidi Yon, Owner 40 Milano Street ,Hanahan, SC 29410 (843) 553-8584 Eighty Years Young Francis Lee is one of the few jitterbugs still with us who was working and playing at the beach during the forties. Francis was born in Albemarle, N.C. eighty years ago this January. If you are among the few of us still around who happened to spend time at either Ocean Drive or Myrtle Beach during the late forties or early fifties, you will no doubt know who Francis is. Most of you who are involved in current beach activities will either know him personally or at least know of him. Francis worked at Ocean Drive from 1945 to 1950 lifeguarding and renting floats and umbrellas. By the time the fifties rolled around, Francis joined the Air Force. He was in the service for eight years. In 1956, during his time in the service, he married his wife, Lynn. Lynn gave birth to their first son in 1957, their second in 1961. By the mid-fifties, he had quit drinking and fighting and had embraced a newfound spirituality. He became active in the Baptist Church, and the carefree days he had spent on the beach seemed like a dream. He and Lynn have now been married for 52 years. They still come to Ocean Drive for all SOS activities and other special events. In his youth, Francis was one of the authentic ―Bad Boys of the Beach‖ with the heart and raw courage of a gunfighter. He got his reputation as an able ass-kicker the hard way. He earned it. Francis was lean and wiry in those days, with deceptively fast hands and agile feet, and he battled his way to a position of respect and notoriety by soundly whipping a number of tough guys at both Myrtle and Ocean Drive. He feared no man and would not hesitate to go to war with anyone who came looking for trouble. His ongoing battle with Maurice and Ronny Treadway has become legendary. For five long years, he fought one or both of the Treadway brothers each time their paths happened to cross. His feud with the Treadways will be covered in more depth in my upcoming article entitled ―Bad Boys of the Beach.‖ Although the drinking and fighting have long since been put to rest, Francis still loves to boogie. He learned to dance in 1945, and continues to do so on a regular basis. He still enjoys dancing to the upbeat oldies such as Shake That Thing and Wine, Wine, Wine. Our mutual friend, Jo-Jo Putnam, once wrote him a letter stating that he wanted to be able to fight and dance just like Francis one day. Francis is proud of the letter and shows it to his close friends. He was inducted into the Living Legends in 1994 and became an honorary member of the Hall of Fame in 1998. He recently celebrated his eightieth birthday with a big party at J.B. Pivot’s Beach Club in Charleston. The owner, Harriett Grady Thomas, a close friend of Francis and Lynn, was on hand to help him celebrate. Friends of all ages, old and new, came from all over North and South Carolina to take part in the festivities. Beaver Greenway, Jan and Jerry Morris, Sandra Schwartz Adams, Moncille Thomas, and I all drove down from North Myrtle Beach to take part in the celebration. It was a two day event that began on Friday evening and continued until late Saturday. We didn’t have the stamina to make it through both days, so we went down on Friday and returned to Ocean Drive later the same night. We arrived at J.B. Pivot’s Beach Club around seven thirty in the evening. Pivot’s is a nice little shag club with a well-stocked bar, a nice big dance floor, and a warm, hospitable atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. We met a number of nice, friendly people, most of which were there to help Francis celebrate. There were several large tables filled with a variety of quality finger foods topped off by fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate sauce. Man, those strawberries were decadently delicious! Francis was summoned to the dance floor a couple of times by the DJ to put on an exhibition, and his friends showed their appreciation by applauding enthusiastically as he proved to us that, even at eighty, he is nowhere near ready for the ole folks home. He is truly an inspiration to us all. A photographer was on hand during the evening, moving around the club and shooting film of all the happenings. He appeared to be getting quite a few good shots of most everyone there, dancing, socializing, and generally having a good time. He also got some real good shots of Francis on the dance floor. We Ocean Drive jitterbugs were included in several of the group pictures. While we were only there for the Friday evening bash, I am certain that the Saturday version of the party was equally as much fun as the segment we were privileged to enjoy. As a matter of fact, I ran into Jerry Burrage, one of today’s more popular DJ’s, at a Super Bowl party Sunday night. Jerry was in charge of the music at Francis’s party on Saturday. He told me they had a good crowd. I asked him how Francis was holding up by Saturday night, and he told me that, as the hour grew late, he had urged Francis to go home and get some rest. Francis replied that he intended to stay right there for as long as Jerry kept playing music. No doubt about it, Francis is a unique individual, a man of quality and integrity who fully deserves the many good friends he has accumulated over the years. We hope you realize, Francis Lee, that you are loved and appreciated by everyone who knows you. I am certain that all of your friends join me in wishing you your happiest birthday ever, and we look forward to helping you celebrate those that are yet to come. David V. Smith
