Your first thought behind the wheel of the new Cayenne S Hybrid may very well be a question: “How on Earth can this be a hybrid?” The answer is hybrid technology, the Porsche way. Honed on the track by revolutionary race cars like the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, yet translated to the road. The Cayenne S Hybrid is the epitome of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy “more from less.” Come in for a test drive and find all the answers on the road. Just like we did. Porsche. We have wonderful friends, family really, in our members and we do some really fun things together. Quickly upcoming is the New Member Social. Lets welcome our newbies and get them excited about being a part of this Region. Soon to follow will be the spring events: the Progressive Lunch (lunch will be at Cedars Floating Restaurant!), the Guilds’ School Penny Drive, the Tri-Cities Rally, and the Tri-Cities Wine Tour. Our region offers so much. There is something else though. Our sprawling INWR region borders on others that also do great events. As a bonus, we are often invited. I would be remiss if I were to not encourage you to attend a super special one happening in April in the Pacific Northwest Region. The PNWR is hosting a GT1 Show and Tell over two days. You’ll see the car. You’ll meet the driver and the crew chief and hear the lowdown from a Porsche biographer. John Mueller who is organizing the event tells me he wants everyone to know about it. If you have the time, be sure to check it out. Start on page 9 of this issue for details. There is so much, as usual, to keep us occupied this year. Be sure to attend at least a couple of events here in the INWR and maybe even visit a neighboring region. Tschüs! Linda Polgar, Editor INWR P.S., Submission Guidelines on page 8. I guess I really never understood what I was getting myself into when I joined PCA in 2012. Wasn’t it just another club? Sure, it was -- just like the other five clubs of which I was a member. They’re all the same, I’m sure … Yep, just like the others … right? No? Let’s see. Car people? Check. Beautiful cars? Check. Drives through the countryside and stopping for lunch? Check. Fun? Double check. But somehow, in some oblique way, PCA seemed unique from the others. “I must be mistaken. I’m enjoying myself just as much in the other clubs, too,” I told myself. Somehow I knew that wasn’t true; PCA was curiously different. I bought a scrappy little 944. A generous PCA member helped me clean it up a bit. I attended meetings, read every leaf of Panorama, went on club drives, and even went to Porsche Parade. This seemed like my element. But I just couldn’t put my finger on something: which aspect of club membership made the other groups pale so? I had heard the ‘ole “It’s not the cars, it’s the people” slogan. But it was the cars, but it was also the people, but it was also the history, but it was also the ... and the … OK, but wasn’t there some overarching principle that held me so mesmerized? I had to do a little skull-scratching. Here’s how the debate sounded in my head: “OK, I’ve owned British cars and I’m associated with many fine members of local British motoring clubs. The cars are adored by their members for their postWWII history, for their individuality, their unique quirks, even for their sometimes-temperamental nature. Laughter and self-humor adorn club activities. But somehow, for me, their comradery is not as substantive, theirs isn’t the same as the PCA experience.” “I’ve owned Corvettes, ‘The Classic American Sports Car.’ Yeah, yeah; the unforgettable sound of an American push-rod V8 roaring to the delight of driver and passenger under brisk, sunny skies. Oh, I know: February - March 2016 ‘Corvette owners don’t own Chevrolets, they own ‘Vettes!’ ‘Gray Collar Performance, baby!’ and proud of it. Yet the Corvette club is not the same.” “I’ve owned BMWs – impeccable performance sedans: beautiful, powerful, and smooth. And, oh, so nimble; they virtually dance over the roadway! BMW owners are a wonderful crowd. But there‘s something different at PCA.” “What about Ferrari? Ahhh, now we’re talking! What an incredible combination of breathtaking performance and sheer beauty of design! Owners are absolutely inebriated with their cars. Club members revel in Ferrari’s Monte Carlo tastes, breathtaking performance, and trade banter about the privilege of a Ferrari’s exclusive service requirements. But there’s still something missing.” Now I was really determined to know what it was. What was missing in all the others? What is it about Porsches, the Porsche brand, and especially the PCA that so enlivens me? As I lay there musing underneath my “new” Porsche (perhaps a little more on that in the next Über!), removing the evidence of 29,000 miles from its undercarriage and uncovering the absolutely beautiful engine castings of its flat-six, it came to me: “Yeah, that’s it! “Porsche” is not a car, “Porsche” is not a car club, nor a lifestyle, it’s a belief system, it’s an Excellence Club! No wonder people accustomed to excellence gravitate there! No wonder they choose to drive Porsches! Yes! There it was out in the open, an Excellence Club! I’m a part of Porsche because I admire and identify with the ideals for which Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche stood, for what today’s Porsche continues to stand, and especially for what our PCA members presently represent: excellence. Yeah, that’s it! No? Look at the composition of our membership: professional men and women, accomplished selfstarters, people committed to ideas larger than Über Alles 10 Tom’s Musings themselves. Need more? Look at the quality of our events, the painstaking preparation obvious in all our drives, our unrivaled Porsche Parade. Mediocre is not the Porsche way; EXCELLENCE is! What a perfect name for a Porsche magazine: Excellence! Oh, yes, Carl Ludvigsen really had it right: EXCELLENCE WAS [and is!] EXPECTED! Alpine Motor Cars, L.L.C. Repair & Service Now, I guess most of you already knew this. Maybe your own PCA journey brought you to a similar conclusion. Perhaps you receive Excellence magazine, or own your own copy of Excellence Was Expected. For me, I came to this realization independent of any such media influence. I came to this conclusion simply by carefully watching the professionalism of our members, closely scrutinizing the beautiful engineering of our cars, and ponderously reading Porsche literature. Yes, indeed. Excellence is why I love the Porsche brand. Excellence is why I identify with Porsche owners. Excellence is why the PCA is my home and you’re part of my family. But I countered my nerves by telling myself that not everyone who registers attends. Well, was I surprised when Bill Roberts told me that all 64 people were in attendance! And there was a seat for everyone. I organized the INWR Christmas Party for the first time last year – 2014 when Nathan Merz’s Columbia Valley Luxury Cars facility was still available for our use. When he moved his business to the Bellevue area, I had to find a new location. The Red Lion Hotel in Richland seemed a logical location; the manager, Ian Napier, is a INWR member. After a chat with February - March 2016 Ian and his catering manager, the decision was made to relocate the INWR Christmas Party to the Red Lion. Based on the attendance, it proved to be a great location and the right choice. As INWR members arrived, they had a chance to visit, enjoy the appetizers with a glass of wine, and find a seat with old and new friends for dinner. Once settled, it was time to enjoy the buffet of pork loin with roasted apples, chicken breast with pears and cranberry glaze, mashed potatoes, sautéed vegetables, and various salads. If you had room, there was a choice of sweet desserts to choose from and enjoy. During the meal, the annual Columbia River Holiday Lighted Boat Parade came down the river past the Über Alles 12 Christmas Party hotel and made its sweeping turn back to Kennewick. It was easily seen through the large windows in the restaurant. After dessert, the famous INWR gift exchange was next. Although Santa Herman was not able to attend the party, the Santa Sisters (Susan Kayser, Diane Rochelle) along with their Elf (HC Kayser) stepped up to guide the gift receivers and takers through the evening. A variety of gifts were available this year. They included a bottle of wine held in a stiletto style heel wine holder, Rennsport Reunion souvenirs, a Porsche museum book, Porsche tee shirts, and coffee related gifts including Starbucks gift cards. The one gift that seemed to catch the eye of several was the Lego Porsche 918 Spyder model kit. Of course assembling would be required and may take some time – the manual is 44 pages long! While it took 2 hours to process all 64 INWR members through the gift exchange, all who participated had fun and an enjoyable evening. Next year we’ll make some changes to speed up the gift exchange. After the long winter’s evening, Santa’s helpers wished the party goers farewell. INWR Shannon Cartier, Barry Glennen, Debbie Wolf, Tillie Hammond, unknown happy person (photo bomb!), Nina Bathurst, Jennifer Gatts, and Art Watanabe are all smiles February - March 2016 Über Alles 13 Installation Dinner 2016 Installation Dinner A Night to Celebrate Volunteers Article by Linda Polgar Photos by Klaus Huschke and Jim Montano T wo catchphrases are constant in the PCA: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people,” and, “Fueled by volunteers.” One event we have every year brings these two messages home and that is our annual Installation Dinner. On January 23, 2016, at the Spokane Club in a banquet room with a fireplace large enough for built in benches on the sides, we did just that: we honored our people, our volunteers. We had a cocktail hour where we could visit our fellow members, view the slideshow provided by Bill Massy, nosh on cheeses, and peruse the variety of drawing prize baskets. This was followed by a delicious plated dinner served capably by the gracious Spokane Club staff. Now past president Ron Harris first asked Klaus Huschke to say a few words. Klaus thanked the Spokane Club services for their excellent accommodations and mentioned we would like to make a return visit. Klaus then went on to thank each individual board member and chair for his or her Ron Harris goes over the year’s accomplishments February - March 2016 At the entrance to the Spokane Club contribution. He announced our newest chairs: the Social Committee is now Nina Bathurst and Audrey Chapman; Dave Mandyke has moved from Insurance Chair to Secretary; Tom Sparks is our new Vice President; and Andrew White is our new Insurance Chair. As always, we have a need for volunteers, not only for the board and chairs but for making events happen and run smoothly. Klaus did not fail to mention this. Ron Harris retook the podium with an acknowledgement of thanks to all those who created this evening. He spoke of his decision when he took this interim one year presidency between caretaking and growth. He chose growth. We made changes. We shook things up. Many first occurred. Keith Martin and Rick Jordan created a document on how to run a tour. We donated to new charities to cover the entire region from Coeur d’Alene to Spokane to the TriCities to the “Western Territories” of Yakima and Chelan. We had our first New Member Social. In fact, Über Alles 14 Installation Dinner Caroline and Gary White, Sparkplug Award Chet accepts his Sluggo Award later Photo by Jim Montano Ron presents Dennis Garrood with his President’s Award tonight, we had two of our newest members attend with this being their first event. Welcome Jerry and JoAnna Butler. There was a Fun Rally in the TriCities. We had our first ever Driver Skills event. The downtown Spokane car show in conjunction with the Festival of Speed had a great turnout with at least 45 Porsches. Tom Sparks’ new event All European Sport Sunday at McEuen Park in Coeur d’Alene was really well done. Ron finished this list of accomplishments by saying he considered it a pleasure and an honor to serve. February - March 2016 Diane and Phil Rochelle, worthy recipients of the Copeland Award Awards came next. The Sluggo Award for the year’s outstanding misadventure went to Chet Hinman. Chet was not in attendance; however, Diane Rochelle accepted it on his behalf and later delivered the trophy to him. The Sparkplug Award goes to those who make a real difference. This year’s recipients are Caroline and Gary White. Ron’s choice for his President’s Award went to Dennis Garrood for going above and beyond and for being the heart of the INWR’s communication of events. The Copeland Award for those who give so much of themselves to the club went to Diane and Phil Rochelle. Über Alles 15 Installation Dinner Bill Massy outlines the coming year Bill Massy thanks Ron Harris for a job well done The awards weren’t over when new president Bill Massy took the podium. He called Ron Harris back up to give Ron a plaque commemorating Ron’s job very well done. That completed, Bill told us how he fell in love with Porsches when he was a senior in high school and his dad had a 1975 914. Bill’s journey eventually brought him to the INWR and he thanked us for the welcome we gave. “ A Porsche is a Porsche but the people are the greatest in the world.” Bill went over the year to come, saying the calendar took a lot of choreography. Bill was pleased to announce we are keeping Klaus Huschke’s expertise on the board by having Klaus as our newest Board Member At Large. The evening culminated with the drawing of prizes. Door prizes were donated by Porsche of Spokane. The baskets were a wonderment of fabulousness from delicacies and spirits to resort stays to a driver’s paradise. Each table had a winner, too: with thanks to Lynn Rowse, one lucky guest from each table went home with one of her handmade, quilted table runners. This was a grand event and I hope all of the volunteers felt duly appreciated. This was a fabulous evening with the wonderful people we work with together to play together. Bonilla, GCR PCA Reprinted with permission I don’t mean Hanukah, tree lights or Holiday lights, and I’m not talking about Clark Griswold’s home illuminating prowess. Let’s discuss some of your car’s most important dash lights (aka idiot lights) and what happens when they light up like a Christmas Tree! Believe it or not, each and every one of those lights is designed to communicate something to the driver, who in many cases doesn’t pay the needed attention. They are also explained in the owner’s manual but many of us never even open it, let alone read it. Here are some of the most common. Please note that the warning light icons may vary slightly from model year to model year. CEL or Check Engine Light: When it blinks STOP THE CAR AND SWITCH OFF THE ENGINE A blinking CEL means that there’s a misfire detected and running the engine could cause irreparable damage. If it’s on solid, it’s letting you know that there’s an emissions issue with the car, but it is completely safe to drive. The car’s onboard diagnostics is detecting February - March 2016 Über Alles 24 PedrosGarage something different from the norm. It could be (and usually is) something as simple as a loose or missing gas or oil cap which allows for a vacuum leak. TEMP light: When it blinks it’s telling you that the car is low on coolant. Top it off. You can use distilled water if it needs a quart or less. If it’s more than a quart use 50/50 premix of any coolant which contains no sulphates or silicates. Usually says on the label “safe for all cars”. But, more importantly is finding out why the light was blinking. Low coolant level means that coolant was been lost over time. It’s leaking from somewhere, even if you can’t see it on your garage floor. The two most probable causes are: 1.- A bad coolant cap. Caps are wear items which should be replaced every 5-6 years. Look at yours (with the engine completely cold) and see if you can find a white residue around the base of the cap. That residue is dried-up coolant that has leaked. Go buy a new cap and install it. 2.- Your coolant system is losing coolant when the car gets up to temp and the system builds up pressure and could be from a cracked reservoir (expansion tank), from a bad sealing water pump, a loose hose clamp or a damaged radiator, among others. To pinpoint the leak a pressure test may be required. BRAKE WEAR light: Each one of your eight brake pads has a sensor inserted into it. When the pad wears down to that sensor, the sensor makes contact with the rotor and lights up the brake wear light. It’s letting you know that your brakes are wearing thin, but you should be able to drive several thousand miles (unless you’re on the track). When this light comes on it’s time to replace pads and or rotors. RESERVE light: This one is pretty obvious. You have about 50 miles before you run out of gas. TPMS light: Tire Pressure Monitoring System constantly checks your car’s tire pressures and lets you know when they are out of spec. Rectify the issue as soon as possible. February - March 2016 Über Alles 25 PedrosGarage ALTERNATOR light: This one indicates that the battery isn’t charging properly. The battery alone (without the alternator charging it) cannot run the car very long without discharging and shutting down. It can get you a few miles so try to turn off any unnecessary accessories such as radio, A/C, interior lights, etc. ABS light: The Anti-lock Braking System light comes on when the computer detects a malfunction. Your brakes will still stop the car but they won’t have the anti-lock function, so beware. A BUNCH OF LIGHTS ON all at once: When you turn the ignition key on, before engaging the starter, the computer turns on all of the warning lights on so that you can verify that they are working, but if a bunch of them come on all of the sudden while driving, most likely you’ve lost the poly-ribbed belt. This belt runs the secondary systems such as the A/C, the Alternator, the Water Pump and the Power Steering pump. So, if you lose the belt while driving, at least those warning lights will illuminate and the steering will get harder but you can still steer the car, the alternator will not charge the engine but the engine will still run, the A/C will not cool but you’ll feel air (warmer) come out of the vents and more importantly the Water Pump will not run so the engine will quickly overheat. If you are a few miles from your destination you can probably get there but keep an eye on the temperature which can quickly start to climb since coolant is not flowing through the system. The most unlikely scenario is that the engine has died completely due to an IMS failure or other internal failure and that is covered on another one of my Tech Articles.
