Thanks to the generosity of our benefactors (reflected in this 2015 annual report), we are seeing a renewal at our three hospitals and hospice. Let’s take a tour of our community in 2016 and witness the impact of your gifts. Foothill Presbyterian Hospital At Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora, we anticipate an amazing restoration of the education center, the building to the north of the hospital. This building formerly housed the foundation office and diabetes education facilities, services which have been relocated to Queen of the Valley Hospital. The enhanced education center will provide state-of-the-art training facilities for physicians, nurses and staff, and serve as a meeting center for the medical staff as well as community members. The major benefactor of the restoration is Marilyn Geleris and her late husband I. Paul Geleris, MD. Additional gifts have been received from the Auxiliary of Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and the Carl E. Wynn Foundation. The newly named Geleris Family Foundation Education Center is expected to open in spring 2017. Inter-Community Hospital Next on tour is Inter-Community Hospital in Covina. The hospital that has served the community since the 1920s has simply outgrown its emergency department, which sees 25,000 patients annually. A huge expansion and improvement project is nearing completion—a doubling of emergency department square footage from 7,000 to 15,000, resulting in 21 treatment beds. Bathed in natural light, this new and advanced emergency facility will open for patients later this year. A major planned gift was received from a generous donor, and Inter-Community will proudly honor her by greeting emergency patients in the Joyce M. Chapman Lobby. Additional support has come from the Auxiliary of Inter-Community Hospital. These hard-working volunteers spent countless hours in the Gift Shop, at the Bargain Box and at a variety of fundraising events— resulting in a huge gift to the expanded facility. Continued on back. Queen of the Valley Hospital On the far west end of the parking lot behind Queen of the Valley Hospital sits a vintage California bungalow home. In the late 1950s when the Immaculate Heart of Mary community purchased ranch property in West Covina, the IHM Sisters resided in the bungalow. It was known as Hospitality House. Sister Josephine Columba and Sister Regina McPartlin, two of the Queen of the Valley Hospital founders, resided in the house for many years, along with eight other nuns. Hospitality House later became home to a resident chaplain, in addition to housing the hospital cancer program. Eventually the little brown house fell into disrepair. Fortunately, the proceeds of the 2016 Citrus Valley Health Foundation Golf Invitational will be used to restore this important symbol of the Immaculate Heart of Mary community for use as a gathering place for physicians, nurses and staff. A suite for visitors and the chaplain, as well as sleeping quarters for physicians in our new Family Residency program, are also under consideration. Citrus Valley Hospice Finally, one of our signature programs is Citrus Valley Hospice, where many in the community receive outstanding end-of-life care. The facility has been renovated and redecorated thanks to gifts from generous community benefactors, bequests and income from endowment. Last year, the kitchen was expanded, and an outdoor patio space was created for staff—all funded by the Hospice Endowment. Gifts, bequests, support from our annual Golf tournament and the Autumn Nocturne, and income from our wellmanaged endowment are all having an impact on Citrus Valley Health Partners’ system of hospitals and medical facilities. We provide excellent healthcare to the communities we serve, and as valued partners, the members of the community invest in our programs and facilities. Please consider supporting our hospitals and programs by making your own gift to Citrus Valley Health Foundation. Thank you, Joseph M. Zanetta, JD Chief Executive Officer, Citrus Valley Health Foundation TABLE OF CONTENTS Hello. Citrus Valley Health Partners said “hello” to 5,037 babies in 2015. Wynn has found deep roots in daughter Billie Fischer and granddaughter Jackie Fischer. Both women serve as trustees of the Wynn Foundation, a private foundation whose grantmaking primarily supports the welfare of children and families, and the institutions that serve them. Billie Fischer, serving as vice president, has been instrumental in making foundation grants, as well as personal gifts, benefiting patients at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and other Citrus Valley Health Partner hospitals. A DAUGHTER PAYS TRIBUTE Billie’s primary goal has been to perpetuate her father’s legacy—his extension of generosity, kindness and goodwill toward others. “I feel very fortunate to follow my father’s lead in supporting people who need help,” says Billie. “I internalized important values from both of my parents, but my father had a significant influence on me. He led quietly, and I have wanted him to be pleased and proud of what I’ve done.” The family business, Wynn Oil Company, was an automotive lubricant and parts mak- er located in Azusa. Billie credits her grandfather, Chastien Wynn, as a talented chemist who discovered the formula for Wynn’s Friction Proofing Oil, but says her father was the man behind the business success. “My father had a way with people,” says Billie, “and he was well-respected in the business world.” She had an early fascination with the business, and in her late teens, worked there filling, labeling and capping bottles, until an automatic can line was installed. Over time, the company grew substantially, eventually shipping the product worldwide. “I recently recovered from my second total knee replacement, completing my physical therapy at our own Foothill Presbyterian’s outpatient rehabilitation department. The therapists and rehab staff are really the best! We are truly fortunate to have such a high-quality team of professionals.” – CINDY GHANDOUR, RESPIRATORY CARE SERVICES DIRECTOR In 1985, Billie was appointed to the Wynn Foundation Board, where she has thoroughly enjoyed becoming acquainted with the organizations seeking grants, as well as seeing the positive effects of the grantmaking. The board is a close-knit group—people familiar with Carl and the family, who are devoted to carrying out his wishes. Billie’s daughter, Jackie, was appointed to the board after her grandfather passed away. A FOOTHILL FOUNDER AND BENEFACTOR Carl was a founding member of the Foothill Presbyterian Hospital Board of Directors; he was a man who liked to “get in on the ground floor” and make contributions. No doubt, his family’s charitable contributions have been remarkable. Millions of dollars through either grants or gifts have aided the hospitals for more than three decades, including personal gifts from Billie in memory of her father, husband and son. CVHF 2015 ANNUAL REPORT SUPPORTING PEOPLE WHO NEED HELP. 4 Foothill Presbyterian Hospital has been a consistent beneficiary, including and most recently, the Ferguson Family Outpatient Surgery Center. This new 2,800-square-foot facility has significantly expanded the options for outpatient surgeries and imaging capabilities. Gifts like those from the Wynn Foundation and Billie Fischer have helped to increase the services that are available. Charlie Botello, imaging assistant; Mike Skovira, lead MRI technologist; Marie Dai’re, MRI technologist Director of Radiology Michelle Smith, who has worked at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital since 1977, is appreciative of the advances, including new diagnostic equipment and a calming, comfortable environment for patients. “We have the most up-to-date technology and software,” explains Michelle, “helping us to provide high-quality imaging. The new large-bore MRI makes the exams more comfortable for our patients, especially those who may be claustrophobic. Our dedicated, highly skilled staff of technologists can now assist our patients in a newly decorated, calming environment. It almost feels like a spa!” FOR THE LOVE OF NATURE Far from Foothill Presbyterian and Glendora lies another precious Wynn legacy: the Carl E. Wynn Nature Center in Homer, Alaska. Before Carl retired, he built a special home located in south-central Alaska, near the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula. Billie has visited the home every year since 1970, until this year. After hosting family, friends and guests from around the world for decades, Billie decided it was time to donate the remaining large parcel of land and the family home to the Carl E. Wynn Nature Center. The Center, which had been established in 1990, is a wildlife preserve: wildflower meadows, songbirds, interpretive trails, guided hikes and spectacular views. Preserving the rich heritage of Carl Wynn has been the life work of his daughter Billie; she has sustained a focus and close attention to the things he cherished. It is clear that she has been, and continues to be, his representative, implementing his wishes at every turn. By sharing her story, it is Billie Fischer’s greatest hope that others will be inspired to be generous. 30+ YEARS OF WYNN GIVING 13 FOUNDATIONS SUPPORTING CVHF IN 2015 GIVING THAT PROVIDES A private foundation is a charitable corporation or trust that makes grants or contributions to other charitable organizations which are themselves engaged directly in charitable work. For Citrus Valley Health Foundation, these grants have become an increasingly important source of funding to support the three hospitals and hospice comprising Citrus Valley Health Partners. Contributions from private foundations, such as the Wynn Foundation, help to offset hospital costs and gaps in the budget, allow the hospitals to pilot new and innovative programs and aid in acquiring state-of-the-art technology and equipment. CVHF 2015 ANNUAL REPORT The Wynn Tradition of Giving 5 The Joyce Marion Chapman Legacy 7.29.15 Important Planned Gift to Benefit Inter-Community Hospital 6 family’s legacy is most notably associated with Chapman University in Orange, the namesake of Joyce’s great-uncle, Charles Clarke Chapman. In appreciation of Joyce Chapman’s philanthropy, the newly expanded InterCommunity Hospital emergency waiting room has been named the Joyce M. Chapman Lobby. On hand to honor Joyce at the dedication and luncheon on March 17, 2016, were several friends, including Citrus Valley Health Partners board secretary Robert Duncan and Joyce’s personal trustee, Margaret Dearth. In 2015, it came to light that Joyce had designated a portion of her trust to benefit Inter-Community Hospital. Citrus Valley Health Foundation Chief Executive Officer Joseph Zanetta and Robert Duncan, then serving as treasurer on the Citrus Valley Health Foundation board, met with Joyce and her trustee to thank Joyce and discuss ways to recognize her gift during her lifetime. Reflecting on the meeting, Robert recounts Joyce’s lifelong commitment to the community: “Joyce’s significant contribution signals her appreciation of Inter-Community Hospital and its important role in providing good healthcare for the community. It’s wonderful to be able to acknowledge her contribution with the Joyce M. Chapman Lobby naming.” THE CHAPMAN FAMILY HERITAGE The late nineteenth century saw the start of the Chapman family in California. In 1894, the Brothers Chapman, Francis (Frank) Marion (Joyce’s grandfather) and Joseph M. Zanetta, JD, and Joyce M. Chapman Charles Clarke, pioneered west from their native Illinois to California, where Frank settled on an 80-acre ranch in Covina. One of the earliest citrus acreages and orange-packing operations in Covina Valley, the estate was named Palmetto Grove. Through their business ventures, both Frank and Charles amassed considerable wealth and contributed greatly to the development of California. Frank and his wife, Wilhelmina Zillen, had four children, among them a son, Grant, who became Joyce’s father. Grant married Zella Vesta Keyes and settled in Covina, where their daughter, Joyce Marion, was born in 1920. The Chapmans lived a block away from the town’s seven-bed cottage hospital founded by the Wittler sisters in 1922—the site of today’s Inter-Community Hospital. A LIFELONG COMMITMENT. earning her high school teaching credential. After teaching for five years, Joyce continued the Chapman entrepreneurial spirit with a move to Palm Springs. She developed and sold real estate there for more than 25 years, timing it perfectly with the Hollywood film industry’s discovery of this desert vacation mecca. She belonged to the prestigious Racquet Club of Palm Springs, founded by actors Charles Farrell and Ralph Bellamy in 1934. The club served as a gathering place for Hollywood’s elite, known as the spot where William Morris talent agent Johnny Hyde “discovered” actress Marilyn Monroe. Joyce admired the many actors she met there and, decades later, still cherishes her collection of framed autographed photos she personally acquired during those years. Joyce has remained a prominent member of the Covina community, preserving her institutional ties and lifelong friendships. In fact, Joyce eats almost all of her meals at the South Hills Country Club in West Covina, meeting friends like Jean Barrymore, a longtime South Hills Country Club board member and current Citrus Valley Health Foundation trustee. “Joyce is a real lady,” says Jean. “It’s easy to become fond of her.” EDUCATION, REAL ESTATE AND HOLLYWOOD SECURING THE FUTURE The Chapman family valued education, and Joyce followed suit. She received an associate degree from Citrus College, attended Chapman College, then received her bachelor’s degree from the University of La Verne. She completed a fifth year at the University of California, Los Angeles, while Planned gifts are as unique as the people whose passion and creativity inspire them to give. Through smart charitable planning, Joyce Chapman’s estate gift offers her the perfect opportunity to make a significant impact, while ensuring a place for the Joyce M. Chapman legacy. 21 ICH EMERGENCY TREATMENT BEDS GIVING THAT SUSTAINS Making a gift by including Citrus Valley Health Partners in your long-term financial or estate plan is an important decision. It’s a decision that encompasses more than financial goals and tax benefits. It’s about harnessing your passion to make a lasting impact on the people and places important to you. You may be surprised how big of an impact you can have. If you plan to include or have already included Citrus Valley in your plans, don’t forget to let us know! Understanding your goals in advance helps us guarantee that funds are used at our hospitals or hospice in accordance with your wishes. CVHF 2015 ANNUAL REPORT CVHF 2015 ANNUAL REPORT JOYCE MARION CHAPMAN is a woman worthy of recognition. As a descendent of one of California’s leading families, Joyce not only has achieved her own business success, she has perpetuated the Chapman family legacy. Now, thanks to the generosity of Joyce Chapman, Inter-Community Hospital will be one beneficiary of her trust, bringing the benevolence of the Chapman family very close to home. The CHAPMAN PLEDGE OF AGREEMENT 7 Our Best Selves 540 Giraffe OmniBeds Stretch Community to Record Giving for Queen of the Valley Hospital AUTUMN NOCTURNE GUESTS CVHF 2015 ANNUAL REPORT THE AUXILIARIES! 8 The impact of community generosity that night seemed to multiply. Guests made generous bids on silent and live auction items, but more gifts were to come as a result of “the ask”—a specific appeal to purchase Giraffe OmniBeds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Queen of the Valley Hospital. Big-hearted commitments came immediately from the three hospital auxiliaries, starting off with a $20,000 gift from the Auxiliary of Foothill Presbyterian Hospital. Past President Garry Reynolds Nancy Simmons, RN; Bonnie Kasamatsu, Queen of the Valley Auxiliary president; Donna Brotman, RNC, NICU director; Garry Reynolds, Foothill Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary president; Bonnie Baker, RN explains: “We were the first auxiliary board to be challenged to consider a $20,000 gift toward the purchase of the Giraffe. After we heard all the wonderful things it can do to help the babies, our board voted immediately and everyone agreed!” Gig Zak-Rallo, representing the Auxiliary of Inter-Community Hospital, proudly pledged the second $20,000 commitment. “When we saw one of the Giraffe beds, we knew our donation was something special for the smallest of our patients. Each one of us that puts on a uniform and volunteers is dedicated to better our community and make a difference—it’s a passion we all share.” Third up was Queen of the Valley Auxiliary President Bonnie Kasamatsu announcing its honorable $20,000 pledge. “Our volunteers work hard, and we all have the same giveback feeling. It was exciting to be able to contribute something specific and meaningful to us at our own hospital. Our board looked at each other and we said, ‘We can do this. Let’s do it!’” WE WERE AWESTRUCK. GILBERT AND PATRICIA MARTIN As a subsequent highlight, MEDNAX, Inc., a national medical group and parent company of Pediatrix Medical Group, announced its pledge of $70,000 in honor of Gilbert and Patricia Martin. The gift marks Dr. Martin’s retirement after a remarkable 40plus year career at Queen of the Valley Hospital. A further honor for the Martins came the following day with the naming of the Gilbert & Patricia Martin Family Birth & Newborn Center. $60K AUXILIARY PLEDGES THE GIRAFFE OMNIBEDS The collective generosity in response to “the ask” generated more than $205,000— enough for five new Giraffe OmniBeds. The Giraffe OmniBed is an incubator and radiant warmer in one. It combines advanced technology with a healing environment and provides support for family-centered care within a critical care setting. Additional benefits include an in-bed scale, oxygen delivery, a humidification system and trending capabilities, such as temperature monitoring. The five new Giraffe beds join the 15 already in use in the 40-bed unit. Queen of the Valley Hospital NICU Director Donna Brotman, RNC, recalls the feeling of gratitude she and others experienced on the evening of the Autumn Nocturne: “We were awestruck by the financial support from the community that night, especially the commitment from all of the auxiliaries. It is amazing to realize that people care so much they would share their hard-earned resources with us in the NICU.” THANK YOU Generosity. Dedication. Caring. All three traits reflect the best in the people of the San Gabriel Valley communities. The continued success of the Citrus Valley Health Foundation is a testament to the loyalty and commitment of so many who have consistently made a difference with gifts and contributions to our hospitals and hospice for over 90 years. GIVING THAT INSPIRES Everyone can make a gift that inspires. Hospital volunteers and auxiliary members contribute gifts of time and talent through their service, acts of compassion and fundraising projects. Participating in Citrus Valley Health Foundation events—the annual Golf Invitational and the Autumn Nocturne—is a fun and easy way to sustain the good works of the Foundation. An outright gift of cash, or a pledge payable over a period of years, supports Citrus Valley Health Partners and has an immediate impact on patients, programs and services. CVHF 2015 ANNUAL REPORT WHAT IS THE MEASURE OF OUR BEST SELVES? Is it generosity? Dedication? Caring? All three were on display on a crisp November evening at the 2015 Autumn Nocturne, Citrus Valley Health Foundation’s annual gala held at The Langham Huntington in Pasadena. Everything about the evening was record-breaking: the 540 guests (more than double previous attendance), proceeds reaching nearly $500,000, a treasure of event sponsors and a stunning commitment from the hospital auxiliaries. “We were our best selves on the night of the gala,” says Mary Jane Bettfreund, Foundation board chair and chair of the Autumn Nocturne committee. “The community seemed to feel a connection—they were caring for their hospitals like they care for their own homes. People were having fun and making their hospitals a better place.” Planning for the evening traditionally begins 11 months in advance. For Mary Jane and her committee of dedicated volunteers, seeing the generous response in giving from individuals, corporations, physicians and the auxiliaries made it all worth the effort and energized the committee for 2016. 9 “When we arrived at Citrus Valley Hospice we were welcomed with a unique combination of compassion and professionalism. The staff allowed us to hope for the best, yet prepare for the inevitable. The comfort of the surroundings was such a relief to my mother, who had been feeling insignificant; it felt more like a beginning than an end. I am so grateful that she was able to be there, free from the pain that had been plaguing her.” Jack and Connie Watson’s Generosity Transforms Citrus Valley Hospice – KAREN DUPONT, A GRATEFUL DAUGHTER AT FIRST GLANCE IT READS LIKE A FAIRY TALE: high school sweethearts, a healthy family of three married children and five grandchildren, 47 wedding anniversaries, topped off by a successful business. Life has been full and rich for Jack and Connie Watson of Glendora—still, the pain of losing loved ones spares no one. HOSPICE HELPS CVHF 2015 ANNUAL REPORT All four of the Watsons’ parents received end-of-life care provided by Citrus Valley Hospice in West Covina. Jack’s father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and stayed at home with oxygen treatment until he needed more help dealing with the excruciating pain. He was hospitalized, then spent his last few days at Hospice. “Hospice care was calming during an emotionally painful time—like being calm in the storm,” recalls Jack. “It really does work.” For Connie, it was the compassionate and friendly hospice staff that made the difference: “Our family could come and be together in the room with Jack’s dad, and the staff was so generous and caring. It meant a lot to us.” When Connie’s father was approaching the end of life, he spent one day as a hospice inpatient, then came back home. “We learned how the in-home hospice function worked,” says Jack. The hospice team handled the details—the bed, oxygen and medicines—so the family could concentrate on caring for him in their home setting. 10 THE WATSON LEGACY Jack and Connie Watson The Watsons’ interest in supporting hospice care began more than 30 years ago. Jack’s business partner, Tom Hollfelder, was serving on the Inter-Community Hospital Foundation board and spoke to Jack about a fundraising campaign to secure a freestanding hospice. Subsequently, when Jack heard a presentation at Glendora United Methodist Church by a hospice volunteer, he already had positive feelings about making a contribution. Jack agreed to get involved, and the Watsons made their first major gift benefiting the hospice endowment. In addition to the Watsons’ personal giving, both the Ameritec Corporation (the joint business venture between Jack and partner Tom Hollfelder) and the Ameritec Foundation were instrumental in supporting hospice. Two substantial gifts from the Watsons followed, both benefiting the Citrus Valley Hospice facility. Their most recent gift funded the refurbishment of ten patient suites, providing patients and their families a warm and spacious place to gather and share the final days. OUR WAY OF SAYING THANK YOU. Jack and Connie make it clear their initial motivation to give comes out of a lifelong faith tradition. This desire to share is an acknowledgment of their gratitude and feeling of being blessed. “For us,” says Jack, “giving back is our way of saying thank you.” The Watsons’ depth and breadth of philanthropy is noteworthy. They have made significant gifts to Claremont School of Theology, established scholarships at Cal Poly Pomona and Citrus Junior College, and provided lifelong support of Glendora United Methodist Church. 1979 THE FOUNDING OF CITRUS VALLEY HOSPICE 1 OF 38 FREE-STANDING HOSPICES IN THE U.S. FAMILY LIFE Jack and Connie, both raised in Glendora, first met at Glendora United Methodist. Jack graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1980, after working for Conrac Corporation for 13 years, Jack and colleague Tom Hollfelder started Ameritec, initially working out of the Watsons’ garage. After 32 years of business success, with up to 165 employees, Ameritec closed in 2012. Connie, schooled in early childhood education, taught pre-school at Glendora United Methodist for 15 years. Both of the Watsons hold significant volunteer leadership positions there, with Connie serving in the role of financial secretary and as chairperson of the preschool advisory council. Jack is chairman of the campaign for facility improvement, serves as secretary of the board of trustees and has been a choir member since 1962. Their two sons and a daughter are raising their own active families in Southern California. The Watsons’ five grandchildren are involved with sports teams, ballet and swimming, with Jack and Connie as their biggest cheerleaders, traveling from venue to venue. The well-being of families is important to the Watsons, and accompanying that desire comes their highest recommendation of Citrus Valley Hospice. “The end of life touches all families,” says Connie, “and we know our gifts are being used in positive ways. We are happy and grateful to be a part of something so good.” GIVING THAT TRANSFORMS Community generosity is critical to advancing Citrus Valley’s mission to provide quality healthcare in a safe, compassionate environment. Benefactors Jack and Connie Watson utilized both outright gifts of cash and multi-year pledges to transform Citrus Valley Hospice. You too can shape Citrus Valley’s future beyond what you thought possible by sharing your resources today. Zanetta, JD Endowment: Building a Philanthropic Tradition Endowment represents an institution’s active planning for the future. It is a source of funds that acts as a financial anchor for a non-profit organization. HOW TO BEGIN: Normally, a donor creates an endowment by asking that the funds remain intact with only the earnings being spent to support a specific project. Trustees of the non-profit determine a spending policy annually that provides for a percentage of the earnings to be spent, with the corpus held in perpetuity. HOW IT WORKS: Earnings on endowments may support programs, building expansions or may be unrestricted. These important commitments provide a measure of financial stability for the future. The principal can never be invaded except under the most unusual set of circumstances, and only with board of trustee approval. GET STARTED: Contributions to create a permanent endowment in support of Citrus Valley Health Partners require a minimum of $50,000. Gifts of any size may be added to existing endowment funds. Questions? For questions about endowment or making a planned gift, please contact Michelle Stoddard or Joseph Zanetta in the Foundation at 626-814-2421.
