This Friday, August 28th, join NPS Science Ranger Derek
and learn about why the a moon looks different throughout the
month. It’s all about “Moon Shadows”. This is a great program
for the whole family!
A trivia question asks: What’s the Earth’s closest star?”.
Come find out on Saturday, August 29th when Michael Hoskins
talks about “Our Closest Star – Past, Present and Future”.
Where did it come from and what will happen at its end?
The Gunnison Valley Observatory is located at 2804
County Road 38 across from Hartman Rocks Recreation Area.
The facility opens at sunset. Programs start at 8:30pm and are
followed by viewing – weather permitting - of the amazing night
sky through a variety of telescopes. Admission is by donation

TOUR DE FORKS
The rowdiest culinary event of the year, Chefs on the
Edge, Monday, August 31, has undergone a total transformation! Bring your best boisterous behavior and come check out
the new, the improved, the even edgier gastronomic game show.
Some of our crème de la crème local chefs have formed a power
team trio of edible prowess. See Jason Vernon (Soupçon
Bistro), Mathew Smith (Lil’s Sushi Bar & Grill), and David
Wooding (Bonez) flex their cooking muscles against three
undisclosed chefs. Chef Mike Busse leads the team of judges
(one being a raffle prize winner and the other the winner of an
auction) while Emcee Michael Marchitelli keeps the audience
informed of the cooking acrobatics occurring on stage.
Appetizers and cash bar are provided for all raucous food
enthusiasts.

CLOUD CITY HIKE - SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2:30 PM TO 5:30
PM. Join us for an evening hike to
the Land Trust’s award-winning
mine reclamation project. Just
steps from town, coal piles from
the closed Smith Hill Mine were
exposed and leaching into the
Slate River wetlands below.
Thanks to a large restoration
effort, the wetlands have been
restored and the coal piles on
Smith Hill have been stabilized.
We’ll learn this history while taking
in the beautiful aspen forests on
this 5-mile round trip hike. As an
extra bonus, the hike will finish
down the brand new Gunsight
