Just steps from town, coal piles from the closed Smith Hill Mine were exposed and leaching into the Slate River wetlands below. Thanks to a large restoration effort, the wetlands have been restored and the coal piles on Smith Hill have been stabilized. We’ll learn this history while taking in the beautiful aspen forests on this 5-mile round trip hike.
