Introduction
F
ounded in the 16th century
when the town was already
a busy cosmopolitan
trading port, Jakarta then
became the center of government
in the colonial era under Dutch East
Indies rule. It was also in Jakarta
where the people of Indonesia
declared their Independence from
three centuries of being burdened
under the yoke of colonization.
Today, Jakarta is the proud Capital
of the Republic of Indonesia.
Y
et, beneath all modernity,
the indigenous culture
of the people of Jakarta,
known as the Betawi are far
from forgotten. The Betawi openness,
joviality and democratic nature have
spread to newcomers permeating every
day life in the capital.
The Ondel-ondel
the giant puppets that
are the icons of the city,
are today an inseparable
part of Jakarta life.
J
akarta is also the most
modern city in the Indonesian
archipelago, offering visitors
the best in Entertainment
and Leisure activities, from
International Concerts to Fun and
Recreation parks for the whole
family, with plenty of Golf, Diving
and Beach sports opportunities.
There is an unbelievable large choice
for Shopping in an amazing number
of huge modern malls, a wide variety
of cuisines to try from around the world,
and, in the evening, numerous hangouts
to get into Jakarta’s exciting nightlife.

attracting their regular clientele
looking for Indian silks, brocades
and a variety of textiles at reasonable prices.
Pasar Baru is also popular with

thousand, but some 110 large and small islands, they stretch
