Dear members:
The month of March is coupled to spring, new life and a new
beginning, but for the DCC we had to be reminded once again
of the harsh reality that we are not immortal. On the weekend of
the 11th, we had the celebration of the life of Lisa Putters, on the
12th the celebration of the life of Coby Bruglemans, and on the
14th the memorial service for John de Visser. Our sincere
condolences to Piet, Mell and Truus and families Your loss is our
loss. These names are part of the fabric our club was built on.
They will never be forgotten.
Our AGM just behind us we are set to go again for another term,
I would like to thank Pieter van Papeveld and Lisa Putters for
their many years of dedicated service. With the election we had
to fill four positions. Femke Williams and Rinske Ter Heide are
the new kids on the block and Wanita White took on the full term
as Secretary. I welcome them and look forward to have a new
board with new ideas. (I have a one up on Justin Trudeau, we
have 6 women vs 3 guys in our cabinet, how about that!)
(HELP)
Our next big event just around the corner is our Annual Dutch
Spring Market. If you are able please give us a hand, especially
with the setup of the stalls, which is the most labor intensive.
As I mentioned to those in attendance at the AGM, we are doing
OK, enjoy the building and each other’s company.

EDIT OR IAL
Dear Readers:
After a very courageous battle with cancer we had to say goodbye to Lisa Putters in March. She
was very much involved with many activities in our club, as a Board member, Auxiliary member,
purchaser, membership coordinator, card maker, sewing club member and was always there to help
out with our big events like Heritage Festival, Silver Skate Festival, Dutch Spring Market and every
special event the DCC organized. I first met her when I joined the Klompendansers and we have
been friends ever since. She was also my co-editor for the Dutch Touch and looked after the
advertising and mailing. Even though she had a few chronic medical conditions, she never let that
stop her and she never complained that something was too much for her. She always told us she
felt “Terrific!” I am going to miss her very much. My condolences to the Putters family.
Also condolences to the De Visser family with the loss of John. He will be missed, especially on the
Friday night social gatherings.
On to April and May: there is a market coming up and the tulips should be peeking out pretty soon
and when they are in bloom there will be a special dedication of the Friendship Tulip Garden beside
our windmill.
I hope you had a wonderful Easter and we’ll see you at the club!
Jenny Smits - 780-473-0905 - jismits@telus.net
N E W S F ROM T HE B OAR D
Thank you to those who supported the Dutch Canadian Club by joining us on March 20 for the
Annual General Meeting. 57 members were in attendance to hear the status of the club and to
ask questions.
Frank Stolk’s 3-year term as president was up and he was willing to sign on for another threeyear term.
Three new board members were elected by acclamation:
Wanita White as secretary to finish the position left vacant
by Rita Hemmes-Davis who resigned during the year,
Femke Williams and Rinske Ter Heide to fill the positions
held by Piet Van Papeveld whose term was up, and Lisa
Putters who passed away in March.
We thank the re-elected board members for staying on for another term and we welcome the
new board members and thank them for stepping up. We also thank retiring board member
Piet Van Papeveld who was in charge of our building maintenance. Enjoy your retirement Piet.
It was nice to socialize after the meeting with some fries and croquettes.

ANNUAL GENERAL0
SEWING & CRAFT CIRCLE
With Spring almost here and the Spring Market coming up
we have been busy making some nice things to sell either at
the market or at Heritage days. With some of the ladies still
traveling the group has been a little small these days. So
there is still room in the board room for additional creative
persons. Although we are mostly sewing, any other craft
making is also welcome. We meet every Tuesday from
10:00 am until 3:00 pm and bring our own lunch. Everyone
is welcome.

Why is it so important to call 311?
Community Liaison Officers stress the importance of calling the police if
you witness crimes or suspicious activities and you should get a
detailed description of vehicles and licence plates whenever possible.
The more reports they get, the more patrols will take place in your area.

What is the census?
Statistics Canada conducts a census every five years. The next census will take place in May 2016.
The census is designed to provide information about people in Canada based on their demographic, social
and economic characteristics, and is the primary source of reliable demographic data for specific groups
such as lone-parent families, seniors and language groups. Census information is important for your
community and is vital for planning services such as child care, schooling, family services, and skills training
for employment.
Who will be included in the census?
Every household in Canada is included, as well as Canadians and their families who are working abroad for
the federal and provincial governments, Canadian embassies or the Canadian Armed Forces.
Why is the census important?
The census collects demographic information on every man, woman and child living in Canada. Information
from the Census of Population is used by all levels of government, businesses, and various social service
organizations and ethno-cultural organizations. The data are used in the administration of government
programs and in planning pensions, healthcare, employment programs, new schools, public transit,
hospitals, daycare centres, etc.
How are the census questions determined?
Before each census, Statistics Canada undertakes a user consultation and testing program to determine the
census questions. Data users and interested parties across Canada are asked for their views on the type of
information they feel should be available from the census. These consultations include:
• various levels of government
• academics
• community groups and non-profit organizations
• private industry
• advisory groups

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER
WEEK APRIL 10-16, 2016
Seniors are valuable volunteers for
the community. Seniors who volunteer
are happier, healthier and more
connected to the community. They are
very giving of their time and talents.
The benefits of this volunteer work are
felt by the seniors as well as the organizations they volunteer for, including the Dutch
Canadian Club!
A statistics Canada report on volunteering in Canada notes that seniors devote the most
time to volunteering of all Canadians. Adults over age 55 volunteer on average 196 to 231
hours per year.
Senior volunteers also contribute skills and expertise they have gained over a life time.
Many studies show that volunteering helps seniors expand their social networks and
improve their social support. Volunteering gives people a sense of purpose which can
positively impact their outlook and feelings of self-worth. Volunteer Canada also cites
improved physical and brain health, lower stress, and improved life satisfaction among the
benefits of volunteering
And we all benefit when older adults are connected, engaged and have opportunities to
volunteer and give back to their community.
During National Volunteer Week and every other day remember to thank the many older
adult volunteers who are making valuable contributions to our community. They help us
create an age-friendly city that allows older adults to continue to contribute as they age.
To get involved, check out our volunteer requests on page 14. The Dutch Canadian Club is
volunteer-driven and we welcome your help, your skills and your expertise at many events.
If you would like to get involved in the Edmonton community:
• attend the Edmonton Volunteer Fair on April 16 from 10:00 am to 2 pm at West
Edmonton Mall. Seventy-five organizations will be on hand to talk about their volunteer
options.
• browse the listings of volunteer opportunities in Edmonton at govolunteer.ca.
• Contact organizations that interest you to see if you can get involved in some way.
Choose a volunteer role like you would a best friend. Find a cause that really matters to
you. An environment where you feel comfortable and safe. An activity that invites you to
use your skills and talents.
Volunteers are the roots of strong communities

Dutch football legend Johan Cruijff
has died at his home in Barcelona at
the age of 68. A statement on
Cruijff’s own website said: ‘On March
24 2016 Johan Cruyff (68) died
peacefully in Barcelona, surrounded
by his family after a hard fought
battle with cancer. It’s with great
sadness that we ask you to respect
the family’s privacy during their time
of grief.’ Cruijff went public with his
diagnosis for lung cancer in October
2015. Cruijff had heart trouble in the
early 1990s and underwent a bypass
operation. He also stopped smoking
around that time. Having advertised
cigarettes when a player, Cruijff took
part in an anti-smoking commercial
in Catalonia. In the advert, Cruijff
said football had given him
everything but that smoking had
taken almost everything away.
Cruijff, credited with reviving Dutch
football, won the European Player of
the Year award in 1971, 1973 and
1974 as he helped Ajax to its hattrick of European titles. Michael van
Praag, chairman of the Dutch
football association KNVB said: ‘We
have lost our best footballer ever,
our number 14 and a great football
friend.’ ‘We are broken. Johan took
Dutch football to greater heights.
The KNVB will be eternally grateful
to him. And I am going to miss
Johan, my friend, enormously.’
