A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS (#1)
THE FIRST MEMOIR OF LADYTRENT
Now in its 5th hardcover printing
Best of 2013 (National Public Radio)
Selected for Booklist’s 2014 Notable Reading List
“Downton Abbey, but with dragons!…A NATURAL
HISTORY OF DRAGONS is a mellow and agreeable
memoir, an absorbing and entertaining novel, and I want
more.” –Tor.com
“Brennan’s world-building is wonderfully subtle,
rendering a familiar land alien with casual details. Fans
of fantasy, science, and history will adore this rich and
absorbing tale of discovery.”
–Publishers Weekly (starred review!)
“Though dragons may not exist in our own world’s history,
it is certain that the struggles of women like Trent do, and
Brennan captures both with equal elegance in this first volume
in the memoirs of Lady Trent.”
–Shelf Awareness (starred review!)
“Told in the style of a Victorian memoir…colorful,
vigorous and absorbing…revitalizingly different
viewpoint.”
–Kirkus
“A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS is a tale historical fiction lovers and fantasy fans
alike will adore. Isabella is a heroine readers will root for, and fans of Naomi Novik and Mary
Robinette Kowal will especially enjoy this book.”
–RT Book Reviews (4.5/4.5 stars!)
“Brennan fuses an ear for Victorian language with a spiky feminist sensibility and produces a
novel that delighted me more often than any other book this year.”
–Slate.com
“What’s truly great about this novel is the seamless merging of fantasy themes and incredibly
realistic scientific and social details. Come for the dragon adventure — because there’s a lot
of it. But stay for characters whose stories feel as real as Marie Curie’s.”

THETROPIC OF SERPENTS (#2)
“This, the second of Isabella’s retrospective
memoirs, is as uncompromisingly honest and
forthright as the first, narrated in Brennan’s
usual crisp, vivid style, with a heroine at once
admirable, formidable and captivating.”
–Kirkus (starred review!)
“Lady Trent makes for an intrepid and
pleasingly independent protagonist,
mastering challenges both emotional and
physical.”
–Publishers Weekly
“THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS is in part a
fantasy travelogue, a guided tour of a world
aslant from our own. It is also, in its way, a
very science-fictional fantasy novel: it is in
love with the idea of discovery, of knowing
the world, of knowledge for the sake of
knowledge…a thoroughly enjoyable book. I
recommend it without hesitation.”
–Tor.com
“Brennan’s follow up to A Natural History of Dragons is every bit as exciting and engrossing as
the first part of Lady Trent’s memoir…Isabella’s strength and bravery in the name of scientific
advancement…is beyond admirable–she’s a model protagonist.”
–RT Book Reviews

and THE SILVERED is an amazing book…
Unexpected twists and turns abound. I loved this
book.”
–Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times bestselling

“A fantastic book…strong solid fantasy. Not urban
fantasy, really core original high fantasy but with
shapeshifting characters. Unexpectedly fantastic. I
was really happy to find that one.”
–Gail Carriger, New York Times bestselling author of
the Parasol Protectorate series
“The way that Huff tied all of the strings together
from this epic journey was masterful…Once again
Huff succeeded in making the world around me
vanish for several hours. I give THE SILVERED an
A+.”
–The Book Pushers
“Books this good don’t come along that often.
THE SILVERED is a well-planned, well executed
adventure tale. I loved it. Completely. I can’t think of a single reason why you shouldn’t or

“A powerfully emotional story that draws you in and doesn’t let you go. It’s perfectly balanced with
scenes that are heartbreaking, triumphant, brutal, and occasionally humorous…THE SILVERED

NEW SERIES
BLOOD AND IRON
The first installment in a new full-length,
richly textured epic fantasy series;
a sword and sorcery Spartacus
It starts with a shipwreck following a
magical storm at sea. Horace, a soldier
from the west, had joined the Great
Crusade against the heathens of Akeshia
after the deaths of his wife and son
from plague. When he washes ashore,
he finds himself at the mercy of the
very people he was sent to kill, who
speak a language and have a culture
and customs he doesn’t even begin to
understand. Not long after, Horace is
pressed into service as a house slave.
But this doesn’t last. The Akeshians
discover that Horace is a latent sorcerer,
and he is catapulted from the chains
of a slave to the halls of power in the
queen’s court. Together with Jirom, an
ex-mercenary and gladiator, and Alyra, a spy in the court, he will seek
a path to free himself and the empire’s caste of slaves from a system
where every man and woman must pay the price of blood or iron. The
adventure, and the slave rebellion, grows book by book into a brilliant
crescendo, and by the end, Horace will have paid dearly in both.
“Sheer fun, with engaging, pulse-quickening action, sympathetic characters and intricate
intrigue…definitely a series to follow.”
–Kirkus
“Sprunk’s world is fascinating and original.”
–Publishers Weekly
“The clear writing and fast pace makes Jon Sprunk’s BLOOD AND IRON a fun adventure
of magic, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned heroes.”

HOT LEAD, COLD IRON
From the author of the Widdershins adventures

crimes, but the latest one’s extra weird.
A mobster’s daughter was kidnapped
sixteen years ago, replaced with a
changeling, and Oberon's been hired to
find the real child. The trail’s gone cold,
but what’s there leads Sideways, to the
world of the Fae, where the Seelie Court
rules. And Oberon isn't really welcome in
the Seelie Court any more. He’ll have to

THE BLOODBOUND
The first installment in a new series that will appeal to
readers of both fantasy and romance
Forthcoming from Ace in September 2014
Of all those in the King of Alden’s retinue, the bloodbinders are the
most prized. The magic they wield can forge invaluable weapons, ones
that make soldiers like Lady Alix Black unerringly lethal. However, the
bloodbinders’ powers can do so much more—and so much worse…
A cunning and impetuous scout, Alix only wishes to serve quietly on the
edges of the action. But when the King is betrayed by his own brother
and left to die at the hands of attacking Oridian forces, she winds up
singlehandedly saving her sovereign.
Suddenly, she is head of the King’s personal guard, an honor made all
the more dubious by the King’s exile from his own court. Surrounded by
enemies, Alix must help him reclaim his crown, all the while attempting
to repel the relentless tide of invaders led by the Priest, most feared of
Oridia’s lords.
But while the King commands Alix’s duty, he is not alone in laying
claim to her heart. And when the time comes, she may need to choose
between the two men who need her most…

fascinating and vividly rendered character study, fully and
expertly contextualized.”

–Tor.com
“TARNISHED KNIGHT proves that Campbell can continue

political and social aspects of overturning a centrally run government that controls its people
through terror and strict regulations are truly interesting.”
–Fantasy Literature
“I truly enjoy Jack Campbell’s writing and pacing…One of the
most interesting aspects of the story is the internal fighting that
has become part and parcel with advancement in their system
of government.”

evil, and his writing is some of the most atmospheric and
powerful you will ever come across.”

–Wired
“The book is amusing and action-packed from page

secondary characters are vivid and multidimensional.”
–Publishers Weekly (starred review!)
“[A] lot of fun and the perfect wish fulfillment fantasy for
many fans.”
–Denver Post
“By far my favorite fantasy novel of the year, Hines’
series starter is so much fun…The world’s magic system
is something fantasy lovers will appreciate. Plus, all the
nerdy book references will have book geeks squeeing with
delight!”
–RT Book Reviews (“Editors’ Best of 2012”)
“[A] love letter to science fiction and fantasy, with real
emotional weight at the center…a rollicking adventure story full of ridiculous little touches.
It’s a seriously fun ride for anyone who’s loved geeky books their whole life.”
–io9.com
“[LIBRIOMANCER] is a joyful romp through the very concept of pop culture and
literature…It’s funny, it’s fast-paced, it’s extremely geeky, it’s not afraid to take potshots at
genre conventions and its own inherent weirdness, and it’s a great start to a new series.”
–Tor.com
“Hines delivers an entertaining and well-written romp of a fantasy in LIBRIOMANCER.”
–VOYA
“For those with a love of books, this is a rare chance to get their geek on. Hines writes a
really fun book, looking at book-based magic. Between some of the best action scenes out

“Hines supplies everything a reader needs—
werewolves, ghosts, robot insects, a fire spider that

–Publishers Weekly
“The sequel to Libriomancer delivers more pulp
fantasy action that’s infused with a genuine
love for books and for creating unusual—and
unusually likable—characters. Bibliophiles
and fantasy enthusiasts will enjoy the author’s
intelligent approach to both magic and literature.”
–Library Journal
“It’s great fun to see just what Isaac and his enemies will come up with next, and Isaac’s very
non-standard romance adds both humor and emotion.”
–Locus
“CODEX BORN is a book written by someone who genuinely loves the science fiction
and fantasy genre…It builds on what’s come before and delivers a thoroughly entertaining
adventure. It’s urban fantasy built on top of numerous other layers of fiction, and Hines has
just scratched the surface of what he can do. And I can’t wait to see what comes next.”
–Tor.com
“[Hines] writes joyously for the delight of his specific market…and the supporting cast of
characters is extremely well developed.”

The beloved Deed of Paksenarrion, the endearing Blue Moon Rising, the

a quarter century. The Mistborn trilogy is more recent but an instant classic. The

my eyes, the best book by the most prominent JABberwocky client. In their diverse
ways, these books represent what we stand for – Every Year, The Best of the Year. Author

EMISSARIES FROM THE DEAD (#1)
Winner of the Philip K. Dick Award
Critically Acclaimed Novel
“With its creepy background and complex plot, [this] offers an
intriguing combination of SF and detective story.”
–Locus
“Cort and her universe have terrific scope for future
development.”
–io9.com
“A brilliantly executed novel, fully successful as both
science fiction and murder mystery. Indeed, it evidences a writer
at the peak of his career, and it shows none of the flaws one
expects from first novels…EMISSARIES FROM THE DEAD is one of the best science
fiction novels of the year so far.”
–SciFi Weekly
“Adam-Troy Castro has given us the ultimate high-wire thriller.”
–Jack McDevitt, Nebula Award-winning author
THE THIRD CLAW OF GOD (#2)
The Award-Winning Andrea Cort Series Continues
“The second novel in Castro’s Andrea Cort series confirms this
series really is something special…These books are compulsively readable space mysteries, but they’re also hiding little
packets of cleverness and substance under the surface. Highly
recommended.”
–io9.com
“I’m particularly fond of blends of SF and the detective story,
particularly when they’re as well done as this one. Castro is finally
showing the promise at novel length that his short fiction has been
suggesting for years.”

THE PAUL SINCLAIR SERIES

so much as The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial in an sf setting,
and it attains the same high level of achievement.”

“Hemry’s real-world experience gives the investigation and
subsequent courtroom scenes a convincing feel. If you crave a
legalistic space-Hornblower, you’ll enjoy this one.”

Urban Fantasy
THE NIGHTSIDE SERIES:
Beginning with Something From The Nightside (2003),
the Nightside books have become the pre-eminent urban
fantasy series after Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files.
“Enjoyably edgy…a dryly humorous, darkly quirky vacation from
mundane reality.”
–Kirkus
“Strong characterization of a complicated hero is one of the qualities that makes Green’s series effective.
With dark humor and psychological horror he rivals urban horror writers such as Jim Butcher and
Christopher Golden. Laurell Hamilton fans should enjoy this series as well.”
–RT Book Reviews
“The ripping, suspenseful and wry 10th tale in the Nightside series proves every bit the equal
of Jim Butcher’s better known Harry Dresden books…Longtime fans and first timers alike
will applaud Green’s blend of fantasy, mystery, and humor.”

no exception.. Green is a natural story teller with
a wonderful imagination. Think Mickey Spillane
writing espisodes of Millenium. He makes the
Nightside come alive in such a vivid way that you
wonder if maybe he hasn’t actually been there himself.
Take a vacation with Green into The Nightside…”

converge at last in a huge blast of action…leaving the reader breathless but

BREATH OF HEAVEN (#3)
FORTHCOMING
Joshua Bilmes first laid eyes on Benjamin Tate’s
work in the late 1990s. Before Brandon Sanderson, before Peter Brett. At that
time it was clear to us that Tate was a major talent in the making. It’s taken
him a few years longer than some of the other major new fantasy writers
that we’ve groomed for best-sellerdom over that time period. But with WELL
OF SORROWS and LEAVES OF FLAME, Tate has taken his spot amongst
the great new fantasy writers of the 2010’s. Boasting breathtaking action
sequences, detailed worldbuilding, and vivid characters, these are books you
don’t want to miss.

Mark Hodder
A RED SUN ALSO RISES
Standalone science fiction novel by a Philip K. Dick
Award-winning author!
“The author of the Philip K. Dick Award-winning Burton &
Swinburne series…launches a new series that features a pair
of uncommon-and uncommonly appealing-protagonists and
blends the fantastic with elements of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells,
and H.P. Lovecraft. Hodder once again excels in his ability
to blend Victorian steampunk, psychological thriller, and
‘sword and planet’ fantasy into an intriguing and entertaining
adventure.”
–Library Journal
“Hodder has crafted a loving homage to the 19thcentury novel with the barest tweaks for a 21st-century
sensibility…The pacing is as vintage as the vividly
imagined grotesqueries of alien life, but the rewards for
acclimating to the style are well worth the effort.” –Publishers Weekly
“A Red Sun Also Rises somehow also manages to be an
incredibly entertaining, fast-paced page turner…this
strange, surprising novel combines elements of steampunk and planetary adventure in ways I
just hadn’t seen done before, and that alone makes it more than worth a look.”
–Tor.com
“Mr. Hodder’s unique take on Victorian sci-fi/horror is at once reminiscent of the past
and strikingly modern. It might feature distant planets and bug-eyed monsters, but the
plot’s fascinating twists and revelations defy cliche. A layer of philosophical and scientific
sophistication underlies the narrative throughout as the true nature of this beautifully
intricate alien environment slowly unfolds.”
–Florida Weekly
“The resulting novel is utterly authentic and effective, delivering a story that, while it harks
back to a vanished era, also incorporates the sensibilities and perspectives of twenty-firstcentury SF.”
–Asimov’s
“A vivid and interesting premise and an enthusiastic audacity of telling it in period style and
trappings.”
–SF Signal
“This newly created London becomes a mix of the familiar and the very unfamiliar. More
original in concept than Hodder’s earlier books, and more ambitious…At times this felt like
an Edgar Rice Burroughs adventure, although obviously with better prose.”

everything a fantasy novel should be. There is adventure, there
is romance, there is magic, there is danger and loss, love and
sacrifice. There is lovely writing, and again, the promise of
more to come.”
–The Washington Times
“Malan’s fantasy debut straddles two worlds, each detailed
in vibrant colors and images. Believable characters and
graceful storytelling make this a good addition to most
fantasy collections.”
–Library Journal
“A well-told secret identity tale.”

SHADOWLANDS
“In The Mirror Prince, Violette Malan has
accomplished that most difficult of fusions – she’s
given a complex, high fantasy world a very readable
contemporary voice.”
–Tanya Huff, Aurora Award-winning author
“Malan jumps right into the action. I enjoyed the
book a great deal…Max and Cassandra were fun, and
it was interesting to see the relationship between the
guardian and Max. Malan even gives us glimpses of
‘humanity’ from the Basilisk Prince, and I always like
conflicted characters.”
–Jim C. Hines, Hugo award-winning author
“SHADOWLANDS by Violette Malan is the wonderful
sequel to the creative book The Mirror Prince and returns
the reader to a world where there are wonderful and
imaginative beings.”

Ellery Queen
Mystery
Translated to television, radio, and film, the Ellery Queen stories reached
incredible heights of popularity worldwide and spawned Ellery Queen’s
Mystery Magazine which continues to be published every month.
THE BENEFITS OF ELLERY QUEEN:
Name Recognition – The Ellery
Queen name is known far and wide in the
mystery world. It’s as widely recognized
among fans of the genre as Sherlock
Holmes, Hercule Poirot, or Nero Wolfe.
Backlist – A huge benefit of publishing
new Queen novels is that the property
comes with a built-in backlist. The
Dannay and Lee Estates have reclaimed
the domestic publishing rights to the
original novels and, aside from a few
exceptions, the books haven’t been made
widely available for nearly ten years.
The launch of new Queen novels can be
supported by reissuances of one or more
classic Queen novels which would give the
program more titles and more shelf-space
in stores at little additional cost.
Worldwide Appeal – The Queen
novels continue to be popular overseas.
Ellery Queen has over two dozen titles
in print in both Italy and China. And
other titles in countries around the world
including Japan, France, Germany,
Greece, and the Czech Republic.
Built in Promotion – Every month
Ellery Queen’s name is front and center
before the eyes of thousands of mystery
fans via Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine,
the world’s pre-eminent mystery
anthology magazine. The magazine is a
licensee and close friend of the Queen
estate and represents a ready advertising
and cross promotional vehicle.

ahead of the competition at the
time, the Erle Stanley Gardners
and even the Agatha Christies.”
–Stephen King
“People everywhere are now
beginning to appreciate
the mystery novel as
true literature...This new
appreciation is very largely due
to the work of Ellery Queen.”

DEATH BY COFFEE
Joshua says: “This is the first new cozy author since
Charlaine Harris and Real Murders whom I’ve found
to be 100% absorbing, engrossing, and a natural.”
When Kristina “Krissy” Hancock moved to Pine Valley to open a combination bookstore and coffee shop, she expected an easy life, away
from the pressures of her semi-famous father, but when a man dies after
drinking a cup of her coffee, her life suddenly becomes anything but
easy.
Krissy has always had a love for mysteries, thanks to her dad’s old
books, so she can’t help but get involved in the case. She has to somehow manage to keep the sinking ship of her new business afloat, all
while trying to discover whether the man’s death was truly an accident
like the police seem to believe, of if in fact, he was murdered. She might
not know what she’s doing, but if anything, Krissy is determined to get to
the bottom of the mystery, even if it means having to move back home
and miss out on her chance with the cute local police officer who seems
to be willing to do just about anything to impress her.

HALLS OF LAW
Kerida Nast is a citizen of the Caraman Polity, an empire that’s been
expanding for generations, pushed forward in part by the intense rivalry
between the Battle Wings and the Halls of Law. Kerida grew up in a
military family, and is looking forward to following her father and sisters
into that life – until the day the Halls discover she’s Talented, and claim
her as one of their own. As far as Ker’s concerned her life is ruined, the
Wings would never have her now, even if she could somehow make the
Halls let her go.
Then the Polity is invaded by the Sea Farers of the Halian Empire, and
Ker discovers what ruination really is. The Sea Farers have magics of
their own, and they’ve come to destroy the Halls, and all the Talents
they can find. On the run, Kerida joins forces with Tel Cursar, a soldier
also escaping from the enemy, to restore and protect their way of life.
Together, they have to find out who the Sea Farers really are, and what
in their own history has brought the invaders into their lives.

I’m not sure that author bios ever tell you
the things you really want to know. So I’ve decided to tell you the things
I want you to know. I’m Canadian, but I spent enough of my childhood
with my family in Spain to identify culturally as Spanish. If you love
blues, and you haven’t yet discovered
flamenco, you should give it a try.
I don’t care who wrote Shakespeare. As
far as I’m concerned, the play really is the
thing. This whole interest in the author as a
person stuff was started by literary critics in
the 18th century, while they were inventing
literary criticism. I know, because I have a
PhD in 18th-century literature.

Robert Brockway
Urban Fantasy
THE UNNOTICEABLES
Sold to Tor at auction in a three-book six-figure deal
after only one week on submission
Carey, with his spiked hair and his patchwork leather jacket, is your
typical New York City punk in 1977. The only care he has in the world is
whether he can get his hands on the hottest chick or the cheapest beer
(honestly, he’d prefer the brew). But when strange, caustic tar men start
burning his fellow punks, and memory-defying faceless posers begin
kidnapping his friends, it’s time to lace up his boots and start kicking
some ass.
Just as soon as he finishes his drink.
Meanwhile, in present day Los Angeles, Kaitlyn is your small-town girl
trying to make it big in showbiz. Typical Hollywood, as long as your
definition of “typical” involves crashing cars and lighting herself on fire
as a stuntwoman. But when a former teen heart throb tries to rip out
her soul during a makeout session with his metallic tongue, things start
getting a little weird. Luckily, the neighborhood hobo – an old man with
broken teeth and a patchwork leather jacket - has experience dealing
with these kinds of things, and will gladly help her out.
As long as she lets him finish her drink.

COUCH
Benjamin Parzybok
After getting evicted from their apartment, three
roommates attempt to discard their couch in order
to move on to a new life, but they find their couch
has other plans for them. Their adventure takes
them thousands of miles from home, into secret
histories and danger, fleeing others who want their
couch for themselves. COUCH is an epic, hilarious
quest for modern times.
“COUCH hits on an improbable, even fantastic premise, and
then rigorously hews to the logic that it generates, keeping it
afloat (at times literally) to the end.”
–Los Angeles Times
“Delightfully lighthearted writing…Occasionally laugh-outloud funny, the enthusiastic prose carries readers through
sporadic dark moments…Parzybok’s quirky humor recalls the
flaws and successes of early Douglas Adams.”
–Publishers Weekly
Rights available.
SHERWOOD NATION
In drought-stricken Portland, Oregon, a Robin Hood-esque water thief
is caught on camera redistributing an illegal truckload of water to those
in need. Nicknamed Maid Marian—real name: Renee, a 20-something
barista and eternal part-time college student—she is an instant folk
hero. Renee rides her swelling popularity and the public’s disgust at how
the city has abandoned its people, raises an army . . . and secedes a
quarter of the city of Portland, Oregon.
Even as Maid Marian and her compatriots (a former drug kingpin, her
ad-writer boyfriend, and many others) build a new community one
neighbor at a time, they are making powerful enemies amongst the city
government and the National Guard. Sherwood is an idealistic dream
too soon caught in a brutal fight for survival.
“Parzybok does this thing where you think, ‘this is fun!’ and then you are charmed, saddened,
and finally changed by what you have read. It’s like jiu jitsu storytelling.”
