The Rumba on the Lumber
is Coming to Town March 4-6, 2016
This year’s Rumba on the Lumber Festival promises to be a fun-filled weekend
of music, good food, great races, rides,
other active competitions and free kids
activities. So plan to enjoy yourself from
the Friday night Pasta Party & Dance
through all of the events on the Downtown Lumberton Plaza on Saturday and
finishing with the cycling events out at
the Northeast Park on Sunday.
Friday night’s Allen Orthopedic Pasta
Party and Dance begins the weekend
festivities. From 5:00 to 8:00 PM, you
can come to the Bill Sapp Center and
dine on Chef Lester’s delicious pasta
while listening to the dulcet tones of
accordionist Betty Fisher. At 7:30, Gary
Lowder and Smokin’ Hot will begin,
and they will play their
trademark collection of
dancin’ grooves until
10:00. So bring your
appetite and your dancing shoes!
Of course Saturday is
the big day in downtown
Lumberton for the festival. From Water Street
to Chestnut Street, and
throughout the Downtown Plaza there will be
wall-to-wall activities all
day long. The streets will be lined with
food vendors galore, as well as craft,
art, business and non-profit booths both
local and regional.
Saturday’s activities begin at 9:00 AM
with the Southeastern Health 5K &
10K races. At 11:00, the Southeastern
Health Free Family Fun Mile will begin.
Walkers and runners of all abilities are
welcome! So come on out and be actively involved, or come to cheer on all the
participants.
Meanwhile downtown around the
Plaza, all of the vendors will be open
from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. From
burgers to gyros and beyond, you’ll be
sure to find culinary delights to keep you
munching all day long. Also, the craft,
art, non-profit and business booths will
be open with many exciting things to
buy and things to learn about.
If you (or your kids!) want to get
active, the free Lumbee River EMC
Kids Zone will also be open from 10:00
AM until 5:00 PM. With bungee trampolines, bounce houses, giant slides, a
rock wall, a basketball throw, and more,
you can imagine the fun you’ll have all
around the Plaza.
From 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM you
won’t want to miss the Michelob Ultra
North of the Border Chili Cook-Off
located in the parking lot
at 3rd and Water Streets.
This is the biggest Chili
Cook-Off in all of North
Carolina, with over 30
teams competing for
such awards as, “Weirdest Ingredient,” “Hottest
Chili,” and “Best Chili in
Town.” Braggin’ rights
are on the line, and your
admission to the CookOff entitles you to taste
all of the Chili concoctions as well as sample products provided by RA Jeffreys Distributing. While
you are in Chilitown, you’ll enjoy the
jumpin’, swingin’, blues quartet: Smitty
and the JumpStarters. All proceeds
from the Chili Cook-Off go to support
the Lumberton Football Association.
At 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, be sure to
stop by The Rumba Games in the lot
right next to Candy Sue’s Restaurant on
3rd Street. This year The Rumba Games
is an exhibition at which local teams will
compete in Robeson County’s premier
test to find the Fittest in Robeson. This

team exhibition will test the toughest
athletes around and also be a thrilling
experience for spectators.
The inaugural concert at the Southeastern Health Performance Shelter on
the Lumberton Downtown Plaza will be
at 3:00. Sponsored by WKML, the show
will feature country music’s Love &
Theft, playing power acoustic versions
of their hits from their albums World
Wide Open and Love & Theft. This duo
will rock the house!
Head on over to Candy Sue’s Restaurant from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM to
sample North Carolina craft beers and
wines at the first ever Rumba on the
Lumber Craft Brew & Wine Festival.
For your admission price, you’ll use your
personal 2-ounce tasting stein to sample
over 30 beers and wines from 9 breweries and wineries. Please note that this
event is open only to those 21 years of
age and older!
Sunday, March 6th, will feature the
final events of the weekend: the cycling
events at the Northeast Park. At noon,
you can take off on the Yamaha of
Lumberton’s Metric Century (100K!).
At 1:30, you can ride in the Cruzbike
20-Mile Bicycle Adventure. At 3:30, you
and all the members of your family can
ride in the Bicycle Shop of Fayetteville’s
Free Family Fun 5K. So bring your
bicycle and your helmet, and be ready
to cruise through the beautiful Robeson
County Countryside.
So as you can see, the weekend presented by the Robeson Road Runners
will be active and fun and full of surprises! Bring the family and have a great
time in Lumberton!

The Michelob Ultra North of the Border Chili Cook-Off
Saturday morning, March 5th, after
you’ve run in the 5K, your children
have climbed the rock wall and you’ve
all had a great bloomin’ onion, come
on down to the parking lot at the
corner of Water & 3rd Streets (across
from Candy Sues) and taste the Chili
concoctions from over 30 competitors! Yes the chili teams are competing for awards in such categories of
“The Spiciest Chili,” “The Strangest
Ingredient,” and “Best School Chili,”
but you get to sample them all if you
like!
According to James Granger of
the Lumberton Football Association,
“These 5-member teams come from
all walks of life. Some are insurance
salesmen, others are boy scouts, some
work for Southeastern Health, and
others are chiropractors. What all
of them have in common is that they
love cooking chili!” As usual, citywide
braggin’ rights are on the line, so all of
the teams not only have a great time,
but also bring out their best culinary
skill. The teams begin cooking at 8:00
AM, but the public is not allowed into
Chilitown until everything is ready at
11:00 AM.
Many of the Lumberton Football
Association coaches and parents start
early Saturday morning putting the
Cook-Off together. These volunteers
are the lifeblood of the event. Granger adds, “But the folks that have it the
hardest are our judges. They have
to taste every one of the batches of
chili in order to award the prizes, and
some are really scorchers!”
As you cruise through Chilitown,
you’ll be serenaded by Smitty and
the JumpStarters, a new Jumpin’,
Swingin’ Blues quartet playing songs
made to get your feet moving. The
JumpStarters feature upbeat songs
that pull from West Coast Jump, Chicago Blues, Memphis Rockabilly and
even a dose of Chuck Berry. This style
of music was rock-n-roll before it had
a name. So bring your dancing shoes
and be prepared to Shake Yo’ Shimmy!
Jef Lambdin, the president of the
Robeson Road Runners adds, “This
event has grown spectacularly over
the years. We enjoy it when hundreds
of people come out, sample all of the
chilis, talk with their neighbors, dance
to the band, and just have a good
time.” So take his advice and don’t be
afraid to say you were brave enough
to taste the chili called “Mama’s
Revenge!”
Admission to the Chili Cook-Off is
$5.00. All proceeds got to support the
Lumberton Football Association.

The Races, Runs, Rides and Games
At the 2016 Rumba on the Lumber
You’ve got to remember that The
Rumba on the Lumber began as a running road race and is presented by the
Robeson Road Runners and the City of
Lumberton. To that end, the signature
events at the Festival are still active
ones.
The Southeastern Health 5K, 10K,
and Free Family Fun Mile events are
delightful runs/walks through the streets
of downtown Lumberton. Both the
5K and 10K begin on Saturday at 9:00
AM, and the courses begin on Chestnut
Street right behind the County Courthouse, then take runners up Chestnut
Street, over to River Road, through
Tanglewood and then back down Elm
Street to the finish line at 3rd and Elm.
The Fun Mile begins at 11:00 AM on
Saturday, and the course uses the same
start and finish lines, but only heads up
to 14th Street before returning on Elm.
Every year hundreds of walkers and
runners participate in these fun, flat,
and fast events. Since the 5K and 10K
courses are certified by RMS Sports,
times acquired at these runs may be
used to enter higher profile races
throughout the United States. If you’d
like to participate in any of these three
runs/walks, for registration information
just head over to the Robeson Road Runners website- www.robesonroadrunners.
com. If you’d rather just watch, then
come on out on the course and watch
the runners as they fly by!
New to the Festival this year are The
Rumba Games! Partnering with Crossfit
QFE and others, the Games are physical
challenges designed to test the mettle
of all involved. They will be held in the
grassy lot next to Candy Sue’s Restaurant on 3rd Street on Saturday. One
component of the event will begin at
1:00 PM, and another at 3:00 PM. This
year, The Rumba Games are an exhibition. The format is a competition of
three-person teams in each event. Each
team consists of one woman, one man,
and one “master” member. All members
of the team perform in each event, the
scores are totaled, and the winner will
be the team that has the highest score.
The Rumba Games are Robeson
County’s premier test to find the Fittest
in Robeson. They will test the toughest
athletes around and also be a thrilling
experience for spectators. So be sure to
stop by and watch!
For the third year, the Rumba on the
Lumber is proud to include the Ride
Robeson cycling events. On Sunday,
March 6th, all of the Rumba on the Lumber cycling events will begin and end at
Lumberton’s Northeast Park. According
to the Robeson Road Runners President
Jef Lambdin, “This is a change from the
previous years, as our cycling coordinators wanted to highlight another portion
of scenic Robeson County with these
courses.”
The day will begin with the Yamaha
of Lumberton Metric Century at noon.
This ride is a 100 kilometer (62 mile)
tour of beautiful Robeson County
with rest stops every 10 to 15 miles.
This is a flat and very low traffic ride,
great for serious cyclists and recreational riders alike. At 1:30 PM, riders will
take off on the Cruzbike 20-Mile Bicycle
Adventure. This ride is a 20 mile flat,
easy, ride with a rest stop at the halfway
point, perfect for riders of all abilities.
The final cycling event on Sunday at
3:30 PM will be The Free Family Fun
5K sponsored by the Bicycle Shop of
Fayetteville. This kid-and-adult friendly
course will wind through the Northeast
Park and around its perimeter.
Whatever your pleasure, walking, running, cycling or watching, the Rumba
on the Lumber active events are for you!
For information about registering for
these events, please go to the Robeson
Road Runners website- www.robesonroadrunners.com.
