Thanksgiving Missionaries Help
Director of
Hurricane Victims by Mary Perrini,
Campus Ministry
In August and September, the Southeastern part of the United States was devastated by
horrible hurricanes. After hearing about the damage and destruction, Bishop Miege High
School wanted to help improve the lives of the people most affected by these storms. After
contacting the National Relief Network, we coordinated a trip over Thanksgiving Break to help
in any way we could.
On Monday, November 22, 41 students, along with 9 chaperones will be traveling to Mobile,
Alabama to tarp roofs. FEMA is presently making appointments for November, 2005 to repair the
roofs damaged by the hurricanes. In order to prevent further damage, we will be tarping these
roofs as well as clearing debris. The Miege volunteers will be working for four to five days. They
will work half the day on Thursday and we hope to have a wonderful catered meal for them on
Thursday afternoon. The group will arrive home Sunday afternoon.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect on the many blessings we have. These 50 people are giving
thanks in a very unique way. We are very proud of the many ways our students serve others. This is one of
the best!

Dear Friends of Miege,
A Letter from the President
Our Miege community is blessed to have strong
widespread support from so many alumni as well as
past and current parents. Over the years, this support has
manifested itself in countless ways. A very powerful example
was the overwhelming response to our recent facility improvement
program. Only with the generous help of many were we able to transform our 40-year old building into a premier educational facility through our
$14 million capital campaign. This type of success only occurs in a school community where a tradition of pride has been passed along year after year. There is
no doubt that strong tradition is a hallmark of Miege.

But how is that tradition started and how is it passed along? Certainly, strong student
spirit plays a big role. Our young people are the lifeblood of our school. Their enthusiasm
and effort are impressive to witness. But, more importantly, I believe it is the teachers and
coaches that instill that pride in one class after another. They work day in and day out helping
their students grow to be more capable and responsible as well as stronger in their faith.
It has been a pleasure for me to get to know two
former faculty members who helped get this tradition started. These two individuals stand out because
their strong sense of loyalty to our school has endured
the test of time.
Both Sr. Roberta Allen and Coach Paul Martel were members of the faculty at St. Agnes High School in the 1950’s.
Even though their tenure ended soon after Miege opened in
1958, they have remained strongly connected to the school,
and both are filled with fond memories of their days working
with their students.
Coach Martel’s influence on his students and athletes is as strong
today as it was then. They all look forward to seeing him. They
vividly recall how their football teams beat much larger schools such as Rockhurst. In addition to the scores, they
remember individual plays as if they were yesterday. Coach remains true to the message of commitment he stressed
to his students. Over the past ten years, he has unselfishly given his time to help Miege with two capital campaigns.
He has remained committed to improving the opportunities for today’s students just as he did when he taught and
coached here.

In the same way, Sr. Roberta keeps in close touch with her former students through reunions and regular correspondence. She recounts how some of the Ursulines buried medals in the 1950’s on the site where Miege now sits. It was
their dream that one day the land would be donated by the Roe sisters so a high school could be built. Never doubt the
power of prayer! At 93, she vividly recalls her days of teaching religion in the church basement and art and yearbook
in the kitchen and bedroom of the stone cottage. Her connection to Miege remains strong today. She closely follows the
progress of all Miege activities. She writes us with words of support and encouragement and keeps us in those powerful
prayers of hers.
The type of loyalty that Robbie and Coach Martel personify is extraordinary. They helped establish the foundation for
the type of commitment that is so integral to our present school community. They inspired their former students and they
still serve as inspiration to us today. This is how tradition gets started and this is how it perpetuates – through exceptional
individuals like these two.

Foundation Dinner Thanks
Those Who Support Miege
Formal choir, nationally recognized orator, Broadway performance,
jazz ensemble and, well, a little slapstick comedy were just a part of
the evening celebrating our school’s very special supporters.
For the 160 attendees, the evening began with Mass officiated by
Archbishop Keleher, Coadjutor Archbishop-elect Naumann and Fr.
Kent O’Connor. The Miege Concert Chorale provided music for Mass.
An ensemble from the band greeted the guests during social hour with
several lively selections.
Larry Gates emceed the evening’s program which included two selections from the fall musical “Leader of the Pack”, performed by Clare
Feeley and several female cast members. A small troupe of students and
Fr. Kent put on a light-hearted and informative skit about the school’s

com, and how Miege is always
just a ‘click’ away. This was followed by the evening’s keynote
speaker, senior Whitney O’Byrne,
who spoke about her choice to
attend Miege and how the Miege
community has impacted her life.
Dr. Passantino made a special presentation to Archbishop Keleher in
honor of the Archbishop’s upcoming retirement. “I wanted to get
the Archbishop something to help him enjoy his time off, so I asked
the students for their help,” stated Dr. Joe. What the students had suggested was a pair of athletic pants emblazoned with Bishop Miege
across the back! The Archbishop proudly accepted them. In a more
dignified gesture, Dr. Passantino also gave the Archbishop a beautiful
glass plaque imprinted with the future stained glass chapel window
that the Archbishop helped
name Duc In Altum.

the Pack
The Theater Department’s Fall
Musical this year was Leader
of the Pack: The Ellie Greenwich Musical.
The show
is based on the life of Ellie
Greenwich, writer of a phenomenal number of ‘60s hits,
such as “Be My Baby”, “Da
Doo Ron Ron”, “And Then He
Kissed Me”, and “Leader of
the Pack”, just to name a few.
The show was full of dance,
fun and strong female vocalists. BRAVO!

Miege Launches ACT Prep Program
Do you ever wish someone would have helped you take your ACT test? Well,
now Miege has implemented a progam that will help all students with that oh-soimportant college entry test.
Because student ACT scores play such a major role in the acceptance to individual
colleges and in determining the amount of scholarship monies awarded, Miege
has initiated a comprehensive ACT preparation program. This unique program
is designed to give Miege students a measurable advantage in their pursuit of a
college education.

Miege Welcomes Local 8th Graders
Each year Bishop Miege reserves a day for 8th grade students to visit. On
November 10, Miege hosted 8th graders from fifteen local schools, including Johnson and Wyandotte County Catholic schools, Missouri Catholic and
Charter schools, as well as one Johnson County public school for an informative and interactive day. The visiting students had the opportunity to view a
special performance of the fall musical, Leader of the Pack. Following lunch,
the prospective students were guided by Student Council members on tours of
the school, emphasizing Miege’s dedication to academic and physical excellence and spiritual growth. The day was enjoyed by all!

all turned out to be great faithfilled people.

Miege students are being trained to use the media center’s new Athena Pinpoint
software through their English classes. The program helps them access and use
the best research material available through a virtual “library without walls.”
By using Pinpoint’s easy, Web-based interface, students can search the Kincaid
Media Center’s card catalog, online encyclopedias, information databases such
as InfoTrac and Gale Literature Resource Center, and NetTrekker websites in
a single, seamless environment. NetTrekker provides180,000 cataloged web
resources, 18,000 lesson plans and learning exercises tied to Kansas State Standards, and automatic review and correction every 48 hours of inappropriate
content and dead-links.

Record-Breaking Year for Stag Strut
• Claudette Borchers served
as a nurse volunteer in the
Athens 2004 Olympics.
She applied in July 2003
and was accepted in May
2004. She worked on a
medical team assigned to
the baseball venue. Her
husband accompanied her
to Greece the week prior to
the Games. It was a terrific experience for him to
travel to a foreign country,
meet some family members
for the first time and see
a beautiful country with
so much history. They also
were fortunate to have
family to stay with. It was
the trip of a lifetime and
one they will never forget!

As the students walked their festive twenty
laps listening to music and munching on juice
and doughnuts, the numbers inside were
adding up to the most successful Stag Strut to
date, raising $71,477.93!
While all grades brought in great contributions, it was the senior class who took the
class competition, making 92% of their class
goal. 616 students made the $80 quota
and 153 students reached or went above the
$110 super quota!! Along with quota prizes of spirit bands and duffle bags, the
students earned an extra day of Thanksgiving break. Great job!!

his wife, Imi, had their first
child last year (son Keegan
Cooke) and another one is

Pike Enjoys Winning Peak
In her 25th year as Miege volleyball
coach, Gwen Pike is enjoying her third
straight 5A state championship. As if
that weren’t enough, Coach Pike also
celebrated her 800th win in October.
This is her 14th state title.

Miege Holds on to State Title Third Year in a Row
State Champ Rielly Leads
Team to Second in State
Colleen Rielley, a transfer from Shawnee Mission East, set the pace for an
already strong girls tennis program.
Rielley went through the season undefeated, winning the East Kansas League
singles title and ultimately defeating the
two-time defending state champion,
Kali Krisik of Arkansas City, for the
Kansas Class 5A singles title.
Whitney O’Byrne, a fourth-year force
on the team, took fourth in the East
Kansas League and rallied at the State
tournament for an impressive fifth-place
singles finish.
Also finishing fifth was the doubles team
of senior Abigail Oliver and freshman
Maureen Rielley.
Juniors Leah Latenser and Ali McNitt
took eighth in the doubles competition.
Overall, Miege was 15-4 over the twoday championship.
Three is a charm when it comes to the coach Gwen Pike and the Bishop Miege
volleyball state championships. This year’s team had a tough battle in the Kansas
5A state championship against Wichita Kapaun Mount Carmel, finally defeating
them 29-27, 25-21. Katie Martincich and Jacquelyn Williams made all-tournament team.
The four seniors that led the team, Martincich, Williams, Danielle Sperry and
Theresa Perrini have know each other since 5th grade and have all been on
varsity the last three years. They are a terrific example for the rest of the team
made up of two juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.
Leading up to the state tournament, the Stags only suffered one loss to St. Thomas
Aquinas who they wound up sharing the EKL title with.

After receiving a
very respectable
score his first time
around on the
ACT, senior Jerry Woiderski thought he
would try again. “I got a good night’s
sleep and ate a really good breakfast,”
said Woiderski about preparing for the
second test. The Student Council Vice
President received a score of 35, one
point off of the perfect score of 36.

Steinberg Wins Rockhurst
Competition
David Steinberg, Miege theater instructor, was this year’s winner of Rockhurst
University’s annual Plays in Progress
contest. In addition to $250 in prize
money, Steinberg’s play, Satie’s Gymnopedes, was honored with a staged
reading, question and answer session
and reception.

NOTABLES...
• Ashley Delgado was awarded a
Tony Aguirre Scholarship from the Guadalupe Center at this year’s Blanco y
Negro Awards Gala.
• Paul Schapker was nominated for the
Principal’s Leadership Award by Miege
administrators. He will be eligible to
win a $1,000 scholarship.
• Whitney O’Byrne was one of twenty
state finalists in the Wendy’s High
School Heisman Awards recognizing
seniors who excel in academics, athletics and community involvement.
Coach Mike Schumacher and the Miege Girls cross country team ran their way
to the Kansas state 5A title at Rim Rock Farm. After two years of being close, the
win was all the better.
Sophomore Kelsey Long took second place and was only 3 seconds off from winning the 5A girls race. Sophomore Kristen Tremonti placed ninth for Miege, followed by freshman Ali DiCapo (23rd), junior Haleigh Riemer (30th) and senior
Kate Barkman (47th).
The team celebrated by following the winner’s tradition of throwing their shoes
in the Rim Rock Farm pond.

of more than 120,000 Black Americans who requested entry to the 2005
National Achievement Program.

named to the 2004 USA Swimming

Alumni Gathering Celebrates Champions
Friday, Oct. 8, 2004
The three Miege State Championship Football Teams from
1972, 1975, and 1977, as well as all local alumni and their
families were invited to this year’s alumni event.
A free pre-game dinner and get-together was held in the
Miege Commons. Alumni, coaches, former teachers and
their families had a chance to visit and enjoy dinner, tour the
facilities, and reconnect with old friends. The commons was decorated with
enlarged photos and the trophies of the State Champion Football era. Former
head coach Len Mohlman and assistant coaches Gene Clohecy, John Dillon,
and Dale Niehaus brought game videos, pictures and scrapbooks for the teams
and fans to enjoy.
After the dinner each attendee received free passes for their family to enjoy the
home football game between Miege and Blue Valley North from a specially
reserved alumni-cheering section!
Those present from the three football teams (some sporting old Miege letter
jackets and their state championship shirts – a little snug) were honored on the
field at half time.
173 people enjoyed the evening and we hope to continue this as an annual
event.

Miege Link to Cardinal’s Success?
Deidre Corona Pujols ‘95 Gets Credit for Husband’s Batting
More than rumor has it that Miegian Diedre Pujols ‘95 gave her husband, Cardinal’s first baseman Albert Pujols, the advice that pulled him out of a batting slump
during last season. Not even the Cardinal’s hitting coach, Mitchell Page, could
deny that Deidre pointed out slight adjustments that caused immediate results in
the Cardinal’s star’s performance!

The Tenth Annual
Bishop Miege/Danny Morris 3-on-3
Basketball Tournament
The 10th Annual Danny
Morris 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was
held on Saturday, July
31. The tournament
was started in honor
of Danny Morris, class
of ’92, who died tragically in the winter of
1993.
This year we had 69
sponsors and 30 teams
participate in four different divisions. The
tournament
raised
$12,788 to help provide financial assistance to deserving
students who might not otherwise be
able to attend Miege. This year’s tournament brings the total amount raised
to over $127,000.
Please join us for the 11th Annual tournament next year on Saturday, July
30.

The leaders of tomorrow walk the Miege hallways today. Throughout the school
year and summer, Miege offers students a myriad of opportunities to develop
leadership skills for their academic, spiritual and community involvement.

Bernie Bianchino ‘66
The Bishop Miege High School community is proud to name
Bernard “Bernie” Bianchino, class of 1966, as Alumnus of the
Year. Bernie is the son of Tony and Connie Bianchino who are
members of Cure of Ars parish. His sister Kathy Swan is a ‘69
Miege graduate.
Bernie and wife Marilyn are both graduates of Washburn
University and are the proud parents of two children. Their daughter Hannah (21) is
a senior at the University of Denver and son Ben (17) is a senior at Blue Valley West.
Hannah is a political science major and plans to follow in her father’s footsteps by
attending law school. Ben is also following in dad’s footsteps by majoring in football in
high school! The Bianchinos are members of Ascension parish.
Since 2001, Bernie has served on the Bishop Miege Board of Directors. He was an active
contributor to the Miege Matters Capital
Campaign, helping Miege successfully
meet its fundraising goals.
Currently, Bernie is President and CEO
of Jaguar Telecom, formed in late 2003.
He has previously held positions as legal
council for the Sprint Corporation as

November 6th during the Foundation Dinner. Archbishop Keleher and Archbishop-elect Naumann drew
the names as Annie Spillman, representative of Ford,
Henley, Winans & Hodgkinson, oversaw the proceedings. Dr. Passantino announced the winners. Former
Miege teacher, Jeanne Kobler was in attendance and
was surprised to hear her name called. Dr. Passantino
called the first prize winners, Steve and Holly O’Keefe,
over a speaker phone for all 166 dinner guests to hear.
Steve was a bit shocked and later said his wife, who
was already asleep, didn’t believe him! Congratulations to all the winners of the 2004 Dream House!

Bob Frazier has been the Chairman of the
Miege Open Golf tournament for 25 years. His
commitment and leadership has helped many
young men and women attend Miege who otherwise would have not had the opportunity to
receive a great Catholic education. All of the
people who have helped make this tournament
a success need to be recognized—from the past
Board of Directors to every player and volunteers who have given of their time, talent and
treasure. We sincerely thank you!
Bob Frazier was given a framed picture of past
tournament memories at the recent tournament
held in September. At the bottom of the picture
was written: Your commitment and leadership
to the students of Miege is appreciated. Your
life reflects the quote; “You can get everything

The spirit of giving by alumni, parents, past parents and friends of Bishop Miege High
School distinguishes our school from others. We salute those special individuals who
continue to support the academic, athletic, and spiritual excellence of Miege.
Our financial needs, like your own, are constant. We continue to bridge the gap
between the cost of education and cost of tuition by our fundraising efforts. We ask
that you continue to provide these sustaining gifts again this year through our Annual
Fund.
There are four ways you can make a difference…
•Bishop Miege High School is proud to offer state-of-the-art technology resources,
including language and science laboratories, a video production room and several
computer labs. Annual donations from people like you help us keep hardware
and software current and up to date. We need your help to afford the continuous
– costly – process of updating our technology.
•There is a difference between the cost of
educating a student and tuition, approximately $1,000. In order to provide
a first-rate education to all students at
Miege, we need your help to close the
gap.

•We have always believed that every family that wants a Catholic education and
is willing to make their own sacrifices should be able to attend Miege. Financial
assistance is largely funded by annual donations from alumni, parents of students
and alumni, and parish support.
•Campus Ministry, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs help our students
grow spiritually, academically and athletically. The recent addition of the ACT Prep
program helps maximize college options for our students. When a student graduates from Miege, they will leave with the skills necessary to excel in college and
life. The additional proceeds provided through the Annual Fund help make these
outstanding programs possible.
• After graduating in 2002 from
the University of Denver
with a BA in English, Allison
Hawley spent the next two
years teaching in inner-city
New Orleans as a part of the
AmeriCorps program Teach
For America. This fall, she is
pursuing her masters degree
in literacy at New York University.
• In 2002, Katie Mulik graduated magna cum laude
from Regis University with
a degree in Politics and
Women’s Studies. She lives
in Denver and works as a
production assistant for The
NewsHour with Jim Lehrer
on PBS.
2000
• Nicole Figueroa and
Daniel Schowengerdt have
announced their engagement.
They are both from the class
of 2000.
• David Schapker graduated in
May of 2004 from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in
Spanish and a B.A. in Theatre
and Film. While at KU he
studied abroad at La Universidad de las Américas in
Puebla, Mexico (just outside
of Mexico City) and played in
his two bands, Filibuster and
Kozmo. He currently lives in
Burbank, CA and works in
the film industry for the post
production company Ascent
Media.

Chaperone a
Mission Trip!
Each year, the Campus Ministry Office
sponsors spring break alternative trips that
serve the poor throughout the United States
and Mexico. We travel to West Virginia
to work with the poor in Appalachia, to
Chicago to work with the urban poor, and
to Winnebegon, Nebraska to serve the
Native Americans and learn and understand Native American Spirituality. We
travel to a Mexican border town to build
homes for the homeless and we also stay
in Kansas City at St. Louis Parish to understand the issues of poverty and homelessness in our own home town.
We also work with an organization called
the National Relief Network that provides
disaster relief all over the country. This
Thanksgiving students headed to Mobile,
Alabama to help with damage from the
hurricanes in the fall. In March we hope
to travel back to the Southeast to provide
more relief.
In order for these trips to succeed, we
need willing adults to help chaperone and
accompany the high school students. This
year, the trips will be March 13-19, 2005.
We would love to have Miege graduates
help us continue these wonderful opportunities. Along with serving the poor, we
pray together and learn so much about
others. If interested, please contact Mary

In Thanksgiving
Students from Mrs. Walsh’s foods class prepared a cornucopia of breads
in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday. The breads, which smelled
wonderful throughout the hallways, were used to adorn the front of the
alter for the Thanksgiving all-school Mass. Trolisa Williams, Katie Glavin,
and Victoria Amor helped with the display.
