A HANDY GUIDEBOOK for JAKARTA BIENNALE 2013 GUESTS Introduction Jakarta Biennale (JB) is contemporary art exhibition held biannually in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. JB presents various cultural activities to be enjoyed by Jakarta’s citizens as a way to perceive the “city”, an area that is moving and constantly changing. Jakarta, as one of the biggest cities in South East Asia, is strongly dynamic and becomes social, political, economical and cultural mirror of contemporary Indonesia. At the beginning, JB was held in 1968 under the name of Grand Exhibition of Indonesian Painting (Pameran Besar Seni Lukis Indonesia) at Jakarta Arts Center, Taman Ismail Marzuki. Along with major development and change in visual art realm as well as in society, the exhibition evolves by engaging more cultural activities all together with wider public. JB opens creative potentials in order to revitalize public spaces in the city through collaborative works between artists, creative workers and local citizens. In 2013 JB is entering its 15th edition. Exhibiting diverse contemporary artworks created by local and international artists, together with numerous other artistic projects. This attempt directly embraces the significant role of Jakarta’s citizen, art communities, alternative spaces, as well as group of artists and activists. JB 2013 will also offer educational activities such as lecture, workshop and discussion for student, academician and wider audience. The 15th JB “SIASAT” is fully supported by Jakarta Arts Council and Department of Tourism & Culture Jakarta City Government. There are properly legitimate ones; like Blue Bird (Blue with a bird logo), Express (White with yellow writings), Gamya (Dark Green), and Trans Cab (Orange, similar to New York cabs). These are safe and always use the meter. Make sure you write down the address you are going to, get to know their phone number so you can call in case you have the feeling you are lost, or learn the best way to get there beforehand with the help of a map! (Get to know landmarks near the address that can help you find it easier). No traffic, mostly on time, and air-‐conditioned. Popular amongst students and office workers. Hire-‐A-‐Car: Car hire is available from a number of companies and from taxi firms, some of which also provide a limousine service and drivers. You can also charter a bus with a driver. AnInternational Driving Permit is required. GOLDEN BIRD, Limousine & Car Rental: +62-‐21 7944444 BIG BIRD, Charter Bus: +62-‐21 7980808 Alternative Transportation: Bajaj (bah-‐jay): Small, noisy, pollution-‐making, bright coloured, motorised, three wheeler thingy. Fares should be negotiated in advance. Metro Mini: Mini orange busses, usually run-‐down, crowded, and stop wherever you want to get on it. Angkot: Baby blue vans, which are mini version of busses. They usually operate on the outer parts of the city, by the edges. Ojek: These bikers for hire are the best solution for times of urgent importance, when ticking clocks are not on your side. Some ojeks carry mobile phones. If you are satisfied with one, you could ask for his number so that next time you could use his service again and again. Traffic Situation: Unfortunately, the traffic in Jakarta has become more and more serious. Whenever you make an appointment, make sure you avoid rush hours (7AM – 9AM and 5PM– 8PM). During rush hours, or when it’s raining (which usually create chaos on the streets), you should at least depart an hour before your appointment (or more, depending on the distance). Please look left and right before crossing the streets, because drivers & bikers like to speed up, especially at night.
