Orange County Chapter The Official Publication of Orange County Pickups Limited www.pickupslimited.com May - June 2006 Irwindale Raceway Club Night... by Ed Oe On March 25th, we had a nice turn out at Irwindale. 19 trucks by my count, OC, Pomona, Inland PUL Chapters attended. 10 trucks met at 2pm near the 60 & 605 freeways and cruised to the track together. We arrived about 3pm with quick entry to the staging area outside the track with the other trucks that were already there. The weather was overcast with a chance of rain but that didn’t stop us from taking the track. It was nice to see the turn out and we all got a chance to meet some new people and see some nice trucks. About 4pm they moved us near the bleachers where the band was playing and you could smell the rubber from the tires of the cars qualifying. Once we got settled with our wristbands and signed our rights away there was plenty of bench racing going on between us truckers. Jeff had his tilt hood open and everyone was checking out this new Flex-a-Lite radiator, very sweet. Food was on the agenda next and some of us headed to the hot dogs stands where the mustard ran and the soda’s flowed. The weather started to turn bad as we watched the raindrops roll off our wiper less rain-x windshields. About 6:15pm we got the word to “Start our Engines”. We rolled as a group to a staging area behind the track and waited for the pace car to meet us and guide us onto the track. continued on page 11 The Pres. Says... by Jeff Hornsby - President As most of you know my radiator was not cooling like it should, so I cleaned my engine at the car wash before I dug into the repair project. That’s when all of the real fun started. I won’t bore you with the facts of my miseries but the reality is I could not have completed the projects that were required to fix all the leaks (oil, water, brake fluid and so on) and the cooling without the help of the members of this club. Like a volunteer fire department in a small town where a little bit of smoke brings everybody together to put out the fire, our group pulls together to help out with a problem that someone may have with one of their trucks. When I called Steve with concerns that my new radiator would not fit, he showed up the next day with Chris and we (they) got it to fit. Larry and Ed have come to my rescue several times. There are many times this has happened to the rest of the club members. If you need help with something all you need to do is ask for help. You will be surprised how quickly it comes. Thanks to all the members who have helped to get me on the road. This is the best club around. Not because we have the best trucks, lots of members, or have been around for over thirty years, but because of the members. The members are the secret to this club. Irwindale brought out 19 Trucks. A few F-100’s were not from the club, it rained a little, and the track was wet enough to stop racing, but after it stopped raining and the tow trucks were sent out on the track to dry it, we were ready to go. Steve was up in the booth and tried to get them to let us drive around the track to dry it that would have been fun. As part of the opening ceremonies we got to take a lap around the track. I had to be careful because I had a leaking brake fitting. It was a good thing that Dale had some brake fluid (will never clean my engine again). A few of the trucks smoked them, but the stands loved Bill’s horn you could hear them from the 605! What can you say? Get in free, get rained on, go around the track, and have some Taco King tacos...priceless! The kick off party at BOBCO is one not to miss. I am going to be there. Even if you are not going on the Super Tour, you need to be there. I think most of you have been to BOBCO but if you haven’t, you are missing Valhalla. After you have been there, tell me if I am right. After BOBCO we get a second party at No Limit, so there are lots of things to do before the Super Tour 4. At last count, Bill said there were 60 trucks starting the tour in Victorville. How cool is that! I can’t wait to get on the road. Soon after we return it will be time for the Pickups Limited Orange County Western Nationals. We need to push this to all Ford trucks. Get some flyers at the meeting and put them in every Ford truck you see and talk to people about it. Is this Seattle or what? I don’t know if it will ever stop raining, but it’s OK if the sun is out for the weekend. March is the real start of the shows, first is Fabulous Ford Forever. This is a Club outing and after that is the Mattel Children’s Hospital car show at the John Force Race Station. I know Ed and I are going to that one. We are the host club at the Garden Grove Cruise Night and then it’s the Super Tour 4 and away we go. There are lots of events and projects to do so let’s have some fun. Keep on Trucking Jeff jeff@pickupslimited.com 2 www.pickupslimited.com Times, they have changed... by Ed Oe - Vice President I was on the WEB checking out the latest posts on Classic Truck World (http://classictruckworld.tenmagazines.com ), then I got an e-mail and I had to answer my cell phone, all at the same time. WOW, too much information and technology to keep up with. The information and technology available today has taken this hobby to the next level. You can even order pieces to build a complete truck online. It’s being done in Classic Trucks. With the truck sites on the WEB you can spend hours online “bench racing” with fellow truckers from all over the world. Your truck could be a dream or pieces, and you can still join a site chapter or get advice on how to get that dream truck together from someone in another part of the country. The good old days have gone. The long summer nights working on your truck when the phone rang you had go into the house to answer it. No PC or Internet to check emails. Word of mouth was the Internet. You got the word on the latest fix or truck for sale. Your pictures took a week to get back from local drug store. Your parts were ordered from your corner auto parts or mail ordered from a magazine. Well, back to reality. I need to check “Who’s Online” and view the “Active Topics” on Classic Truck World. As of today (Easter Sunday) we have a total of 60 trucks joining us for this years Super Tour 4! Wow, who would have thought? Bill Lee the party guy, has created not one, but two kick off parties. The first one will take place at BOBCO on Saturday April 22nd. There is a small entry fee for each person of $5.00 to help cover food costs, but that’s not all. The tour and BOBCO will be donating 100% of the raffle money and gate money to the Progeria Research Team here in So. Calif. This is a rare genetic disorder that ages children fast. There life span is about 8 - 20 years old. But they look like they are 70 -90 years old. Special invites that will be there are Sam and Terry Foose (chip Foose parents) and they are bringing his F-100 (after stealing it from the Peterson Museum display). There will be a great raffle and auction with all proceeds to be donated. We will have a few of the kids with this disorder on hand to pick there favorite truck which will receive an award also Sam Foose will pick his pick to receive an award. The second party will take place the following Saturday, April 29th at No Limit Engineering. This party will also include food, music, and a raffle with tons of prizes. This is probably your last chance to get a peek at the Super Nationals grand prize which will be a “56 F-100 built by the guys at No Limit. Both parties sound like a blast and there are enough combined prizes to make everybody happy. The tour will be joined by a camera crew from the Discovery Channel as we depart on May 12th. They will stay with us for most of that day before flying off to their next assignment. Another crew will join us somewhere as we enter Tennessee for another day of filming. Combine this with video that Dale and a few others will be shooting and it sounds like we will all be getting a bit of TV time! Founded in the year 1978 Number of associates 25 Models: From 1950 until 1956. It began with two friends who each had one ‘56 pickup. This started the task of finding more persons who had in common the taste for the F-100 pickups. These friends were going to the Angel of the Independence monument in Mexico City, where vintage cars were meeting. But only 3 pickups made the show. From this event began the task of creating the Club. Our associates have enthusiasm and passion for the F-100’s Every one of the 25 trucks has been restored and modified at the Belmont’s Workshop. The shop owner Mr. Joel Belmont and his son Mauricio, will be joining us on the Super Tour this year. This is a great group of friends who are accompanying us on the tour tot he Super Nationals and are visionaries in the modifications of the F-100. Each truck has taken from 2 to 3 years to finish even including the disadvantage there exists in getting the parts and accessories that do not exist in Mexico. Many of the parts needed to be imported to complete these trucks. Six associates Joel y Mauricio Belmont, Eugenio y Alfonso Ugalde, Carlos Benitez, Jorge Segura, Santiago Aicinema, and Arturo Acevedo will go in representation of the Mexican clubs, we will go with great pleasure and happiness of being able to share with all of you, friends of the F-100. 4 www.pickupslimited.com ULTIMATE ROAD FOOD FOR THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP The famous In & Out 100x100 History of the 1956 Ford F-100... There’s more to the unique style of this 50 year old truck than you would ever imagine! BY STEVE STILLWELL - Publisher of Trucks Magazine The 1956 Ford F-100 was well received by truck buyers of the day and amazingly remains unchallenged as the most coveted classic pickup by today’s truck enthusiasts and hot rodders. While similar in design and sporting interchangeable fenders, hoods, running boards and beds with the slant cab versions of the 1953 through 1955 F-100 models, the 1956 Ford F-100 stands alone with its unique, one-year cab design. Ford truck engineers and designers felt they had limited time to react to Chevrolet’s unveiling of an all new truck for 1955, and limited funds due to the launch of the prestigious Continental Mark II along with massive restructuring of several stamping facilities. Ford was marching forward in the automotive field, but at the same time had only achieved a half-hearted attempt at restyling the F-100 series for 1956. A look at this benchmark of classic trucks reveals that Ford modified the existing cab and created a more-boxy look through the implementation of a wrap-around windshield and the addition of vertical doors and side windows to match. Retained were the traditional slab sided look, a hood with the aerodynamics of a boot and four full, fat, bulbous fenders. Ford marketing felt they had missed the mark in truck design for 1956 (it is rumored the whole design team went through major personal and direction changes), but nothing could have been further from the truth. In fact, the result was an anomaly, an idiosyncrasy of design and style that was immediately embraced by truck buyers of 1956, and is still revered today. A huge percentage of 1956 Ford F-100s are still on the road, some even now used as work horses, but the majority of them are customized, collector pickups. It is astounding to see so many 1956 Ford F-100s still in use since manufacturing numbers were so minute compared to today’s production. For instance, Ford sold 901,463 F-Series trucks for 2005. In 1956, Ford only produced 137,581 ½-ton trucks for the year! The whole series accounted for 297,308 trucks; as you can see, a very small production run by today’s standards. By the way, the suggested retail price was $1577 for the 6-cylinder base model, and it weighed in at 3325 pounds. Both figures are relatively light! Even more rare are the panels as Ford only produced 14,023 of them in ’56! Two major events of 1956 would doom the styling of this F-100 to only one production year, which undoubtedly contributed to its status as a collector item. In July of that year, the federal government implemented the Highway Act of 1956. This legislation was the first of its kind which authorized the construction of over 40,000 miles of Interstate Highways primarily funded by the federal government. Driving at increased highway speeds quickly became a way of life as Americans abandoned traditional travel by bus and rail to now jump into the high-powered family car or truck, and drive from coast to coast at upwards of 75 miles per hour. General Motors had their finger on the pulse of the nation’s needs with the introduction of the new, high powered 283 V-8 and more aerodynamic bodies of the 1955 models of car and trucks. Ford had concentrated their marketing efforts on safety, apparently an area of less concern for other Detroit auto makers. Advertising of the day reflected Ford’s efforts to attract buyers through their implementation of car and truck safety packages referred to as Lifeguard Design. Dyed-in-the-wool truck enthusiasts will know that new styled interlocking door latches and a deep-dish steering wheel were first employed as standard equipment for 1956 Ford trucks fit with Lifeguard safety items. Ironically, seat belts were available as an option! Reflecting on car and truck sales of the mid-fifties indicated this marketing direction was soon to prove to be a poor decision. Americans in mass were looking for speed and style which forced Ford to abandon this safety campaign mid-year. For Ford trivia buffs, the ’56 F-100 was available with the standard 223 cid OHV six which produced 133 hp at 4,000 rpm with a compression ratio of 7.8:1. Optional power came in the form of the 272 cid OHV V-8 featuring 167 hp at 4,400 rpm. It was fed by a two-barrel carb and used 7.8:1 compression, same as the six. Higher compression heads, performance cams and a 4-barrel carburetor and intake were available as options through Ford dealerships. New colors for the 1956 Ford trucks included Diamond Blue, Nocturn Blue, Platinum Gray and Meadow Mist Green. The old standbys of Raven Black, Vermillion, Goldenrod Yellow and Meadow Green remained, with any color available in two-tone by being capped with Colonial White! More trivia? The 1956 Ford F-100 Custom Cab featured a chrome-plated widow’s peak styled grille, the first chrome grille on a Ford truck since 1938! The Custom Cab package also included bright windshield and drip rail molding, black & white chain-style upholstery with red or copper-tone color-keyed facings as well as a dash panel insulator and door mounted identification plates. A passenger side door lock was also new for 1956. Ironically, the passenger arm rest, automatic dome light, second horn and chrome plated window division bars were deleted! And here’s a real kicker, only the ’56 (of this series) has a distinctive wiper pattern which does not overlap. New for 1956 trucks was the coming of the tubeless tire! It would be my educated guess that all of these distinctive items unique to the 1956 Ford F-100 have helped to generate this cute, fatfendered, ugly truck’s mystic appeal. Amazingly, the wrap-around windshield was incorporated into the styling of the 1957 Ford F-100’s all new shoe-box design. Jacob Weinrich’s recent review of the new TEN MAGAZINE series of Bright Baby Trucking books was mostly favorable. His only comment to this editor was that he wished that Stillwell would have had more pictures of fire trucks and a few pop ups to keep his interest. All in all it was a good read Weinrich said, “I only fell asleep twice!” Your editor ( and proud grand dad) was granted this exclusive interview during a bench racing session that Jacob was having with his best buddy Earl, who fell asleep on the couch due to lack of interest in the book. www.pickupslimited.com 7 July Club Event - The Braille Rallye - July 8th 2006 The Braille Rallye was begun over 30 years ago as an incentive for visually challenged students to study and to grow confident in reading Braille. The primary purpose of the Braille Rallye is to give the students a fun incentive to aid in their mastery of Braille, increase reading skills, and gain confidence in communicating with the sighted world. Each student must qualify by meeting established reading goals before they can compete as a navigator. Up to 60 student navigators from Braille Institute Youth Centers all over Southern California compete in a standard sports car rally, teaming with drivers from sports car and street rod clubs, law enforcement, media, and just regular folks. For those donating their time for this event, it is very rewarding to know that the Braille institute reports that this is their primary “fun” event promoting reading skills. The actual rally is very straightforward. The driver/navigator team must get from checkpoint to checkpoint at the proper speed to attain the correct elapsed time. The directions are written in Braille or large print and are given to the driver by the navigator. You, the driver, have no idea where you are going; the challenge is for your navigator to read the instructions properly and to communicate those instructions clearly to you. These students, like any other California teenager, would like the independence of driving their own car. That cannot happen, but in this event, they are more than just a passenger. As a driver, completely dependent on your navigator, you will find a team partner and friend, and a day not easily forgotten. This is a NON-SPECTATOR event. All the attention is directed towards the navigators. They are the competitors. They will receive the trophies and the cheers. We do invite the media so they can report on the activity and the remarkable capabilities of these young people. There is a $10 Entrance Fee to help defer the costs of the event. The fee is payable the day of the event. You will receive an entry confirmation package. This will contain a copy of General Rally Instructions and Sample Rally Instructions. To be a DRIVER, please mail or fax a completed Driver Registration/Information Sheet to the registrar before July 1, 2006. To be an EVENT WORKER, please contact Patricia West at 714-841-1249. Helpful Hints: • Arrive early – first registered, first out • Please do not bring a passenger unless he/she will be a course worked. The day is for the navigators without distractions • Polish the car and yourself – there is a good chance of media coverage • Fill your gas tank. Check oil and water • Be sure your spare tire is usable • Make sure seat belts operate properly • Bring a Los Angeles/Orange County map or a Thomas Guide • Familiar yourself with the “General Rally Instructions” you will receive prior to the rally • Verify your auto insurance is current (The event is covered by K & K) • Bring a cell phone. You will be given a number to call incase you are hopelessly lost or you have a problem • Bring a couple of extra dollars that may be needed to treat your navigator along the route. • There will be a break stop midway through the rally with drinks and snacks • You will need a watch, clock or sundial to track time, especially at the break stop. Fancy rally equipment is not necessary • SUNSCREEN! • There will be plenty of Braille Institute workers to assist at the checkpoints, break stop, and luncheon. We will try to make it as fair as possible www.pickupslimited.com 9 Spray Can Alley... by Larry Lopez - Safety Chairman SAFETY INSPECTION DAY - Saturday February 25 It turned out to be a nice day for crawling under a batch of nice F-100’s. Jim Gozzo did the pre-checks on the headlights, brake lights, horns, and wipers and he also made sure that all of our paperwork was filled out complete. Thanks for the help Jim. Together we inspected a total of 11 trucks. It feels good to say that nothing was found that caused anyone to fail the inspection! Of all the things I saw it looks like rubber bushings are the main items that wear on our trucks. You would think oil contamination would be the #1 cause of the deterioration but surprisingly its not. On the trucks that have rack and pinion steering, the mounting bushing would wear. On the trucks with Volare front ends, it’s the control arm bushings that I found to wear. I did see some cracked shock bushings too. This looks like a good reason to swap out the old and worn stock bushings for a set of new urethane style bushings. I have even seen some of these on the shelf at Pep Boys so they are becoming easy to get. that he has it from the source that Bill even wiped off the jaws of his channel locks with a red grease rag and ran them under cold water before using them as tongs! That’s a first class guy. Nothing like the favor of 10W-30 to make a kosher dog taste like real barbecue meat! Bill fired that grill up and roasted dogs for everybody. There were a couple of people that did not have horns that would sound. They were in the process of connecting the wires but they at least had the horn and button installed. We didn’t find anyone who needed brakes. It is good to know we all have good brakes. I did find one truck with a loose steering coupler but we worked the adjustment set screw and fixed that one quickly. Spay Can Larry larry@pickupslimited.com The other thing that a lot of us have in common is we don’t carry a spare tire. Chris, Dusty, and Dale are the only ones that carry a spare tire. Most of us have AAA, but we should all consider some alternative means. Chris took advantage of the day and lubed his chassis, boy he deserved an extra hotdog for that. As the inspection was I full swing, Bill Lee drove in with his flat bed loaded with barbecue goodies with all the proper tools for the job. Steve claims 10 www.pickupslimited.com All in all, it was a good day to check out trucks and hang out with other club members. On a personal note, I really enjoyed looking at everyone’s truck. I saw some things that I would consider doing to my truck. There were a few people that could not make it that day or there truck was in the middle of a repair. For those trucks, March 11, 2006 will be the make up day. From my estimation, there were 3 or 4 trucks that need inspection. Hope they can make it next time. Irwindale Raceway Club Night...from page 1 DUSTY’s Corner... With camera’s flashing from the Effie’s shotgun riders and the crowd cheering us on as we took the first lap, Spray Can Larry smoked his tires. Larry Willet and Chris Travers quickly did the same. Bill Lee was having fun with his new freight train air horn, and I could see Jeff smiling knowing his temp was about 180. Lap two came quick and I felt the urge to step on it but the great feeling of the moment kept me in line with the rest of the crew. As we rolled off the track we saw Steve Stillwell taking pictures and smiling at us. Some stayed for the rest of the races and others headed home, but all and all it was a great day. Different things have been tried and sometimes used and accepted and sometimes not accepted. Bill Lee told me at one time “Bed Pipes” were the hot thing. They consisted of exhaust pipes coming up behind the cab up to the bottom of the bed rail and going out to the end and exiting there. How about fender skirts? Remember when Tex Smith tried to start putting VW front ends on coups and roadsters in Hot Rod magazine? All of the things that have been tried were cutting edge at the time and did, or did not, became accepted. As in nature, things must evolve and stand a certain test as to looks or practicality. Today’s trucks are mostly light years ahead of the rough riding no brake masterpieces that were, showed off with pride at every chance, and considered the ultimate. What goes into an unexceptional run of the mill truck today would be a show stopper years ago, when placed among the “roots trucks” of years ago. Consider manual steering, manual drum brakes, dropped axles, and the way some of the big engines of various brands were installed. There’s been a rather unusual occurrence in the automotive hobby lately. The emergence of traditional hot rods i.e. “Rat Rods” are the most noticeable. Rat rods are sometimes exciting and occasionally disturbing. The outcomes are sometimes cartoonish and sort of dream like. Going back to the roots I’ve been told. No one tried to be funny with their cars they just tried to do the best they could with what they had. Like it or not even traditional appearing trucks are getting better. Improvement slips in through time tested, cutting edge acceptance and the aftermarket; you name what, brakes, suspension, instrumentation, engine parts. All the different things available to us today are, or rather were cutting edge and have become the “Roots” at this point in time. We’re all getting better. I hope that will become the new “Roots”. There are many of us that dream for the time to come when you have all the time imaginable to do what we like best...work on our trucks. We have all had projects that I thought would never end and all along kept thinking wow, if I was only retired, I would have all the time needed to do this right. Editors Ramblings With our annual safety inspection now behind us, it is easy to feel that all is well with our rides. Larry crawled over, under and through each of our trucks (that were running at the time) to give us a comprehensive overview of exactly what condition our condition was in. To my knowledge, we are part of just a hand full of clubs that do this for our members each year. But it seems like there is always more for us to do. With Super Tour 4 blasting off in just a few weeks, all of us that are lucky enough to be going have that short list of things we still want to do. I know that mine is growing longer each day. You see the safety inspection is just the thing that got each of us motivated to make our trucks as road worthy and comfortable as possible. Tech Information... OK, so how many of you ask yourself from time to time if your speedo is correct of if that pumpkin has the gears that are correct for your motor? These formulas can be the difference between doing it right the first time or suffering with bad setup. Try these out on your ride and know what you have going for you. Just remember what Larry said at the inspection. Look for the hidden things. The photo below is about 3 years old and shows a crack in my crossmember. Most of us have modified suspensions and need to look for these little signs of fatigue on a regular basis. There must have been over 150 hundred Hot Rods. Plenty of locals with their kids for the egg hunt, enjoying the Kettle Corn and Hot Rods. John Force and Ashley was working the crowd. Jeff was working the Easter bunny showing off this new Flex-a-Lite radiator. Top Show Award went to a RED 59 Chevy Bel Air Foose design. Top 10 awards included a PUL prospective member Ron Smith’s RED 56. Eight Thousand dollars was raised for charity and that made it a great day! 14 www.pickupslimited.com Ladera Vista Junior High School Charity Car Show... Saturday March 4 by Chris Travers We had a great day helping the school rise some money for their gym. This was the first effort for the parents group of this local school and although the turnout was modest, the cars were not. You would not see this variety of cars at shows 10 times the size. Unique cars included a Messerschmitt, a few Rat Rods, a vintage Mini Cooper, and two Morris Minors. Of course the F-100’s stole the show in both numbers and total interest. Dave, (Old Tech) took two awards, Mayor’s choice & Best Truck. His ride was looking good, but there was one fellow who was trying to eliminate the competition by attempting to set fire to the finer trucks in the group. Some guys will do anything to try to get a trophy won’t they? www.pickupslimited.com 15 Attack of the Killer Spray Can... and no, I don’t mean Larry! by Chris Travers At one time or another, every guy has been tempted to challenge a spray can. Weather it is trying to squeeze that last drop of paint out, or trying to open the can just to see what that thing inside is that rattles (shake until ball inside breaks loose and rattles), the spray can is a special thing to most guys. Our fathers always told us to never toss one into a camp fire, but I’ll bet you they did it once or twice themselves. After all, explosions are what guys are all about. This is where my story comes in. Recently I was in the process of changing my rear end gearing to a more useful 3.70. Of course this also included painting the pumpkin so it would look good while lying under the truck. Having a very small work space, things tend to stack up. This is where my problem began. At the rear of my vintage ‘64 Austin Mini Cooper was the growing pile of excess parts and goodies. Careless me did not notice that the box containing my just removed ring & pinion gears was in the path of the closing garage door. When the magic button was punched, a chain reaction began that caused the ring gear to fall a total of 8” and puncture a full can of Krylon’s best satin black paint. The can then began it’s magic journey shooting under the mini until it hit the muffler, making a sharp left turn and creating a wonderful “swirl” path to the center of the F-100. It’s final resting place was someplace between the two cars. The end result was a full can of paint all over the floor, walls, jack stands and assorted tools, and only a small drip on either vehicle! Now that’s living right. Vent... by Chris Travers Have you ever wanted to hide that ugly center A.C. vent in your truck? Do you shake at the prices of those super trick machined aluminum jobs? Do you just want to stay cool no matter what it takes? Well here is a neat trick that anybody can do with simple tools. Just follow along and see how easy it is to create your own hidden center vent. Total cost on this project was under $10. Step one is to go to your favorite bone yard and pickup a windshield deflector. You know, one of those goodies that makes your defroster work. This one came from a MGB and cost me $4.00 at Ecology Center in Santa Fe Springs. I used a free entry pass that I had from Veterans Stadium! Step two is to trim the vent to the required size. Mine is now about 6” wide. Then strip off all paint, rust etc. Step three is to create fastening studs. Since I do not have a welder, I used the old reliable, JB weld to fasten a pair of 10-24 pan head bolts. Then paint the unit a matte black or whatever color will blend with your interior. Step four is to hook up the vent tubes. In this case I needed to adapt the diameter. Using a PVC fitting, this worked perfect. Cost for the fitting was $.87 at Home Depot. Step five is the final installation. It is difficult to see in this photo, but the vent is directly under the shinny spot on the dash. Total out of pocket cost was $4.87. If you needed to pay your entry into the junk yard and had to buy the JB Weld, you would still be under $10! www.pickupslimited.com 17 Fabulous Fords Forever.... by Chris Travers Fabulous Fords Forever is an event that many of us have attended on our own, but it has been a long time since Orange County Pickups Limited showed up as a group. Sunday April 9th was a bit gloomy at first as the early birds floated into the Sears parking lot across the street from Knotts. This has become the meeting place for all things Knotts for our group mostly because it is easy to find. Thanks to a few calls from Steve Stillwell, there were two booths to man and our guys received prime parking spots on the grass. Banners were brand new boasting Orange County Pickups Limited, ClassicTruckWorld.com and FordTruckWorld.com. Ed had plenty of Western Nationals flyers, club business cards and news letters that were available and a special thanks to Carl & Pam for making the extra effort to pass these out to all the truck owners they could find. All in all the reports came in as this was not only a great show to attend, but a great show for the club. Several prospective members were found including an owner of a F-100 that had parked it some 16 years ago. Hopefully we provided that extra bit of motivation to him and he will bring it out someday soon. As for me? I was in Arizona getting the play-by-play of the event via the old reliable cell phone from Ed. It was the next best thing to being there.
