Ghost’s Story? Reinvigorating
The Flyers Defense

The prevailing notion of the Philadelphia Flyers defense entering the
2015-2016 season was not a good one.

It was seen as a unit with a lot of question marks, most notably in the
area of a quick transition game. With a high pressure system implemented
by new head coach Dave Hakstol, it didn’t seem that the scheme was
going to fit the personnel in place.
But as the calendar turned to 2016, the Flyers discovered, somewhat by
happenstance, that a move that Flyers general manager would not have
done “in a perfect world” proved that idea somewhat false.
When top defenseman Mark Streit went down for six weeks with a
painfully described pubic bone displacement, Hextall looked at his
American Hockey League roster and decided that second year defenseman
Shayne Gostisbehere would best fit the bill in replacing the kind of
components that the veteran Swiss blueliner brought: speed, creativity,
and quick trigger on-ice anticipation.
To borrow a line from Kevin Spacey in the film The Usual Suspects:
“And like that…he’s gone.”
There’s no place that Gostisbehere showed he was a deadlier weapon
than Keyser Soze than in the NHL’s newly structured three on three
overtime period. Displaying excellent anticipation and clear
communication with Flyers captain Claude Giroux, the Florida native
potted three game winning goals, two in back to back home games
(November 23 vs Carolina and November 27 vs Nashville).
"Three-on-three is built for him," Flyers forward Jake Voracek said in
their December 15th overtime win over the Hurricanes. "He's a great
skater with a great shot. He's smart as well, so he knows when to jump
in and what to do with the puck when he's got it. It's why he is where he
is right now and it's why he's scoring those goals, because he's a hell of
a player."
Dating back to his time with 2014 NCAA Champion Union College,
Gostisbehere’s shot has always been deemed NHL ready, as evidenced
during Frozen Four victories over traditional collegiate powerhouses
Boston College and the University of Minnesota. He scored a goal, two
assists, and was plus seven in the National Championship Game.
The Flyers January 5th game versus Montreal provided another
example as he notched a goal and assist, the latter of which was a
tremendous tip in by Wayne Simmonds of Gostisbehere heavy shot.
The key is timing and releasing it properly.
“I’m not going to shoot the puck if no one’s in front,” Gostisbehere
said. “The goalies are too good in this league. I just wait for things to
develop and I put it on net and they do a great job at tipping it in. Simmer
is one of the best in the league at it for a reason and it definitely showed
tonight. I’m doing the easy part I’m just putting it on net, it’s them who
are taking the hits down low and fighting for space and scoring goals.”
“I think it’s the way he gets it away,” Simmonds said. “As a winger
going out to block a shot, if the D pump fakes it and takes a quick step to
the side, you’re kind of screwed. You watch him play, you get him the
puck up top and his feet are always moving. So it’s kind of hard to block

the shot. It may not be the hardest shot, but it’s heavy and it gets through
the majority of the time. He’s doing a good job out there.”
Early on, there was some question as to whether the 5’11, 160lb
defenseman could handle the physical rigors of playing against the NHL’s
bigger players. It was one thing to be an offensive dynamo, but quite
another in playing well enough defensively to utilize his natural
quickness.

physical game had similarities to Greene, as
well as Lecavalier.
Lecavalier hadn’t played a game since
November 12 and was looking for an
opportunity to continue his career.
The former Tampa Bay Lightning captain
reportedly intends to retire at the end of the
season, according to his agent Kent Hughes.
The deal was struck with the Flyers
retaining 50 percent of Schenn’s and
Lecavalier’s remaining salaries. The Flyers now
have $4,112,501 in cap space according to
GeneralFanager.com.
"We liked the flexibility we gained from the
move cap-wise. We had eight defensemen, it
wasn’t fair to any of them and quite honestly it
wasn’t good for our team, and Vinny was
sitting out. We just felt like this made sense for
where we are as an organization and where
we’re going,” Hextall said.
Weal, 23, was a third round pick (70th
overall) of the Kings during the 2010 NHL Entry
Draft. He made his NHL debut with Los
Angeles earlier this season and has appeared in
10 games, recording two penalty minutes while
averaging 8:07 of ice time per game.

A torn anterior cruciate ligament limited
him to five AHL games last season and he had
only 19 career games with the Phantoms prior
to his first NHL call-up, so there was some
concern about his readiness.
He returned from ACL rehabilitation and
added an estimated 10 to 15 pounds of lean
muscle to better handle the NHL’s physical
rigors. In camp, he looked noticeably stronger
in his upper body.
Thus far, Gostisbehere has proven himself to
be a key component to the Flyers transition
game and his quick stick lunges have
successfully stifled opposing teams offensive
forays and led to fast counter rushes. It’s as
much about what he does in neutral and
defensive zones as what he does in the
offensive end of things.

A dangerous play to be sure, but it’s also an
important element to how “Ghost” plays.
Even with Streit’s recent return, the Flyers
made the decision to keep Gostisbehere with
the club, opting to send forward Sam Gagner to
the Phantoms instead.
It’s not often that the Flyers develop a home
grown defenseman (see Therien, Chris for
reference), but if Gostisbehere is the beginning
of a tantalizing crop (with Ivan Provorov, Travis
Sanheim, Sam Morin, and Robert Hagg most
prominently in the mix), Hextall’s long term
goal of a top flight blueline will have plenty of
promise.

"I think it's pretty easy to see with him out
there," Simmonds said. "He brings that extra
spark. The things he can do with the puck. I
think the penchant he has for scoring big goals
has been really evident during the time he's
been here."
On January 6, the Flyers traded D Luke
Schenn and C Vincent Lecavalier to the Los
Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Jordan
Weal and a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL
Entry Draft.

during the 2013-14 season with the now
defunct Manchester Monarchs (moved to
Ontario, California for the current campaign as
the Reign) where he recorded 23 goals and 47
assists for 70 points in 76 games, ranking him
fifth in the AHL.
Last season, Weal helped the Monarchs win
the 2015 Calder Cup, earning the Jack A.
Butterfield Trophy as the MVP of the Calder
Cup Playoffs with 10 goals and 12 assist for 22
points in 19 playoff games. He was also named
an AHL Second Team All-Star following the
season.
Weal is waiver exempt, so he will be staying
with the NHL club. The Kings had him on their
roster despite healthy scratching him a lot in
the early season for fear of losing him if they
attempted to get him back to their AHL affiliate.
"I’m an energy guy. I play good in all three
zones,” Weal said. “I think my work ethic is
one thing that I can offer to the group. They’ve
got a good squad. They’ve got young guys up
front, skilled guys, and I think I can mix right
in well with that and make some really good
things happen.”
Weal will wear #19 as a Flyer.

Flyers World Junior Championship
Prospect Report

As the 2016 U20 World Junior Championships
drew to a close with Finland winning a thrilling gold
medal final over Russia, 4-3, in overtime…the
Philadelphia Flyers saw a franchise record seven
prospects play in the tournament (tied for most of
any NHL team, except Arizona) with general
manager Ron Hextall on hand to take in their
performances.
the tournament, finishing with three goals and six
points in seven games played.
Sandstrom was the backup to starter Linus
Soderstrom for the majority of the tournament and
finally got to appear in the Bronze Medal game
versus Team USA.
It was an experience that Sandstrom would
probably like to forget as the Americans destroyed
Tre Kronor, 8-3. While it wasn’t a good performance,
the play in front of him during the Bronze Medal
game was very uninspiring.
Let’s review how they performed on junior
hockey’s biggest stage.
Russia: D Ivan Provorov and F Radel Fazleev
Hextall’s Take: "Well, Felix, holy smokes! You
might have needed the good Lord to stop most of
those goals. It was a tough game. Sweden was a very
good team and I was surprised that happened to
them.”
For the silver medal winning Russian team, top
2015 pick Provorov had a stellar performance with
and without the puck throughout the tournament,
finishing with eight points in seven games, including
two assists in the final.
While Columbus’ Zack Werenski won the top
defenseman of the tournament, Provorov was a close
second.
"We are the nation that battles until the last
second," Provorov said to IIHF.com. "We proved it
here at the tournament and last year too. I’m happy
to be Russian and happy to be playing for Team
Russia."
His teammate Fazleev also opened eyes during
the tournament with strong defensive play in a
fourth line role, finishing with a goal and three points
in seven games.
Hextall’s Take: “Well, (Provorov’s) a very high
level player. I think the impressive thing over there to
play on that big of a stage and to make the same play
in the last minute that you would make in the first
minute is very impressive, especially for a kid at that
age.”
“So I think his level of poise, his understanding of
the game, his reads all over the ice – offensively,
defensively – they’re very good. So, he certainly was
a top player over there. I think you could argue he
was one of the top players in the whole tournament.’’
"(Fazleev’s) overall game is really strong. I saw
him in Calgary this year and that's where I saw the
offensive part _ the QB on the power play, he makes
plays. And even than he was playing a two-way
game. He's playing solid defensive hockey in the
tournament over there. He did make plays, he had
chances. His work ethic is high end (as is) his
commitment to the game and his commitment to the
team. He's not a real flashy player, but there's a lot
of substance there. We really like the way he plays."

Draft was limited in ice time during the tournament,
but he made an impact when it counted on the score
sheet (scoring a pretty goal in Canada’s elimination
game) and in terms of gritty, “under your skin” style
(drawing a spearing penalty on Team USA’s Alex
DeBrincat in the opening game of the tourney and a
big hit on Sweden’s Dymtro Timoshev).
Sanheim was also limited to a third pairing role
by head coach Dave Lowry and had moments of
strong play bracketed by some passive shifts as well.
He recorded an assist in Canada’s final game of the
tourney.
"I looked at Felix and said, 'How many goals were
even remotely stoppable? Again, it's good experience
for him. The one game there he went in with 2/2, 3
minutes left. I'm still not sure what happened to the
other goalie, but he went in with a one-goal lead and
made two huge saves for them, so I think the
character of Felix showed up there and it'll be
valuable for him....I thought for the most part, he
played well."
"Oskar, I thought he had a really good
tournament. His net-front presence and hands,
tipping pucks, and his understanding of the game
and finding the soft sports for scoring chances (was
evident). He's a really, really good player. Our scouts
did a hell of a job of finding him.”
Czech Republic: F David Kase
The Czechs lost in the first elimination game, but
2015 fifth round pick Kase surprised a bit with
tenacious on the puck play, finishing with an assist
in five games played.
Hextall’s Take: “It’s easy to say you’re
disappointed. But those kids being there is no
different than Sam Morin last year. Those kids being
there and being on Team Canada, playing under a
microscope like that, is an experience that’s going to
benefit them their whole career. So, do I wish they
would have played a little more? Yeah. I do.
Hextall’s Take: “The one game I saw, he was
outstanding. He didn't end up with a point but he
was outstanding. He had three or four opportunities.
David plays a real honest game. He's a little pitbull;
he just needs to get a little bigger.”
“On the other hand, I feel very fortunate for our
organization that they got that experience on that
stage and they both did some good things. I mean,
Travis Konecny made the most of his ice time as the
tournament went along, scored a big goal for them.
And quite frankly, he played very well. He was
noticeable every time he was on the ice.’’
We like the way he plays and competes. He's just
a dog out there, [meaning] he hounds the puck.The
skill level is there. He is a smart player. He stays on
the right side of the puck. He needs to get stronger.
For where we got him in the draft and his upside,
we're very happy. He's a great kid and he just loves
to play the game.”

Lindblom played a ruddy, strong two way game
and meshed well with skilled linemates throughout

Scoring by committee Nick Cousins (AHL all star) 8 goals 21
assists for 29 points leads the team in scoring. The following helpers

delivering a punishing body check when the opportunity calls for it.
In terms of his defensive game, in looking back since the beginning
of the season to where he is now in his first pro season, Morin is
feeling pretty happy with the work he’s putting in.
“I feel pretty good,” Morin said after a late November game vs
Providence. “Coach has a lot of confidence in me. He’s giving me a
lot of ice time and I’ve been on the power play and the penalty
killing unit. I think I’ve improved a lot skating with the puck and
making good plays. I’m happy in my progression right now.”
While focusing almost entirely on play in his own end during the
early part of the season, he is now being trusted to recognize the
right time to use his surprising speed to assist in the Phantoms
offensive transitions and to let go off his prodigiously hard shot more.
“I’m going to start from there and focus on neutral zone play as well.
I’m a big guy and I can skate. I want to try to keep it simple with a
good first pass, but my defensive game is my priority right now.”
“If you see the guys who are the best defensemen like (Boston’s
Zdeno) Chara, he always makes simple plays. Guys like (Nashville’s
Shea) Weber. Weber is known for his shot, but he keeps his game
really simple. That’s what I want to do.”
As of January 8, Morin has two goals, nine assists for 11 points in 36
games played. Depending on the NHL club’s performance, it’s more
than likely that Morin will likely stay with the Phantoms for the
duration of the season and continue his development into the
summer and training camp.
Cousins, Stolarz are AHL All Stars
Defenseman Samuel Morin is playing his first professional season
for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Drafted 12th overall in the 2013 NHL
Draft, the 6’7, 224lb defenseman is learning the proverbial tricks of
the trade from head coach Scott Gordon and player development
coach Kjell Samuelsson (who knows first hand what it’s like to play
with the rare size and reach that Morin has).
Morin recently completed a four-year career with the QMJHL
Rimouski Oceanic scoring 16 goals, 71 assist, 87 points, and amassed
363 penalty minutes, along with a reputation as a fierce body checker
and willing fighter. He was also a member of Canada’s gold-medal
winning team at 2015 World Junior Hockey Championships in
Toronto, Ontario.
Forward Nick Cousins and goaltender Anthony Stolarz have been
named to the 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Classic. The two-day event,
which features the AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday,
January 31 followed by the AHL All-Star Game on Monday, February
1, will take place at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in
Syracuse, N.Y.
Cousins and Stolarz will be members of the Atlantic Division team.
Cousins is currently first among all Phantoms and tied for ninth
among all AHL skaters in total scoring with 29 points. Stolarz has
produced a 12-7-3 overall record in 23 appearances this year to go
along with league’s seventh-best goals-against average (2.18) and the
league’s seventh-highest save percentage (.925).
Instead of a traditional 60-minute game, the 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star
Classic will feature a new format where the league’s all-stars will be
divided into four teams, one representing each of the league’s
divisions (Atlantic, North, Central, Pacific).
The teams play a round-robin tournament featuring six games of nine
minutes each; the first half of each game will be played at 4-on-4,
and the second half at 3-on-3. The two teams with the best records at
the end of the round-robin tournament will face off for the
championship, a six-minute game played at 3-on-3.
The 20-year-old Morin has displayed an excellent attitude about
working on developing and refining his game in the American
Hockey League. It hasn’t been an easy task for him and mistakes
happen, but he continues to show signs of using his frame properly
in walling off opposing forwards along the board at times and

Reading Royals Report

The Royals record 16 wins, 12 losses, 2 OTL, 3SOL for 37 points. This up
and down season of play has Reading looking up at several teams.
Leading point men are Rookie Justin Crandall (9g-22a-31 points), Adam
Comrie (13g-16a-29 points), Mike Pereira(13g-14a-27 points) are showing
the way. Several call ups and waiver wire pickups are wearing on the
club this year.
The league leading Missouri Mavericks are tearing it up with an
incredible record of 27 wins 3 losses 0 OTL, 1 SOL for 55 points. The
mountain is tall but ECHL clubs need to see gaudy number of 111 goals
for the Mavs and only 55 goals against. Good luck boys start climbing
the standings.
Several home games coming up are against teams the Royals need to
beat to climb those standings.
January 22 and 23rd against the Brampton Beast and January 24
versus the Elmira jackals.
A really big showcase at the Santander arena will be February 5,2016

bout with meningitis. Each year, donations

to the Cherokee Chiefs player with the
highest academic performance in school.
This year, in honor of the recovery of Flyers
Hall of Fame left winger Brian Propp, the
Neuro-Rehabilitation Center for stroke
patients at Magee Hospital has been added
as a fifth beneficiary of proceeds from the
game.

Men’s Hockey
Salve Regina opened the scoring at the 7:27 mark of the first period and
took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Neumann Battles to 5-4 Win
FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Neumann University men’s ice hockey team battled
to a 5-4 win at Fredonia on Friday evening in non-conference action.
Lauren Cusack (sr. Toronto, Ontario / Etobicoke) tied the game at one at
8:38 if the second period on a backhanded shot. Casey Kilduff (sr. Old
Bridge, N.J. / Northwood Prep) and Steph Grundy (fr. Ottawa, Ontario /
Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) tallied the assists. The teams remained tied at one
after two periods.
Mike Davis (so. Newark, Del. / Amarillo Bulls (NAHL) had a goal and an
assist. Shayne Morrissey (jr. St. John's, Newfoundland / Prince George
Spruce Kings (BCHL) handed out two assists. Tyler LeFebvre (sr. Ashburn,
Va. / Hartford (AtJHL) started the game and made 11 saves, but allowed
three goals. Mitch Wiebe (fr. McGregor, Manitoba / Waywayseecoppo
Wolverines (MJHL) made 32 saves in net and picked up the win.
Two goals in the third period came in a 28 second span. The Seahawks took
back the lead. Lucas answered 28 seconds later to knot the score at two off
an assist from Schneider.
Fredonia got off to a fast start, scoring three goals in the first 8:24 of the
game, including a shorthanded goal.
This set up Schneider to score the game-winner in overtime.
“We started 2016 off the right way. The team came back fresh and we had a
great week of practice and we carried that momentum into today,” said head
coach Gina Kearns. “We put together a solid 60 minutes against a good
Salve team. Cusack started us off with a nice backhanded goal. Lucas had a
great individual effort to tie the game in the third and Schneider with a
hardnosed shorthanded goal to win it.”
The Knights took advantage of their only power play as Steve Low (sr.
Haddonfield, N.J. / Philadelphia Jr. Flyers (AtJHL) put Neumann on the
board at the 9:03 mark of the first. Morrissey and Davis picked up the
assists. The Blue Devils took the 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Knights scored two quick goals, beginning with 4:03 left on the clock.
Jon Low (sr. Haddonfield, N.J. / Philadelphia Jr. Flyers (AtJHL) found the
back of the net off assists from Liam Board (so. Burlington, Ontario /
Georgetown Raiders (OJHL) and Brandon Gagne (sr. Pembroke, Ontario /
Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL). Davis then scored 23 seconds later to tie
the game at three. Morrissey and Jory Mullin (jr. Cartwright, Manitoba /
Winkler Flyers (MJHL) had the assists. The teams headed into the final 20
minutes knotted at three.
Neumann (2-9-1) will head to Salem State tomorrow afternoon for nonconference action beginning at 5:00 PM.
FeLebvre Named WCAC West Goalie of the Week
Midway through the third period, Neumann tallied another pair of quick
goals. Ryan Luiten (jr. Anchorage, Alaska / Sherwood Park Crusaders
(AJHL) put the Knights up 4-3 with assists from Shane Topf (jr. Eagle River,
Alaska / Gloucester Rangers (CCHL) and Nick Perruccio (jr. Richmond Hill,
Ontario / Georgetown Raiders (OJHL). Just over a minute later, Zac Lazzaro
(jr. Aston, Pa. / Utica College (ECAC West) scored a shorthanded goal, from
Anthony Pino (jr. Glen Mills, Pa. / Brockville Braves (CJHL), for a 5-3 lead.
With the goalie pulled, Fredonia was able to get to within one with 1:29 left
in regulation. However, that was as close as the Blue Devils would get and
the Knights hung on for the 5-4 win.
DANBURY, Conn. – Tyler LeFebvre (sr. Asburn, Va. / Hartford (AtJHL), of the
Neumann University men’s ice hockey team, was named the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Goalie of the week, for the week
ending January 3.
LeFebvre was named the Middlebury Holiday Classic Most Valuable Player
as the Knights won the tournament and started 2016 2-0. In his first two
starts of the season, LeFebvre allowed just two goals and made 80 saves in
net. In a 4-1 win over New England College on Saturday, the senior made
33 saves. He followed with 47 saves in the Championship game over host
Middlebury.
Neumann (8-4, 2-4 ECAC West) will head to Fredonia on Friday and
Saturday for non-conference action.
Neumann (9-4) and Fredonia (5-6-2) will meet again tomorrow afternoon
beginning at 3:00 PM.

Knights Open 2016 with OT Win
NEWPORT, R.I. – The Neumann University women’s ice hockey team
defeated Salve Regina University 3-2 in overtime on Friday evening to open
2016.
Jackie Schneider (fr. Holland, Pa. / Lady Patriots) scored the game winner in
the overtime session.

The U-18 Team Played in Princeton

4) R.J. Murphy - 6-2, 190 - LW - 2017 NHL draft eligible - This was his
first game and he was impressive. He's a good passer. He has solid puck
skills. His speed could be better but he makes up for that with his hockey
I.Q. by anticipating the play. He gets to loose pucks first. Scored a nice
goal on a bang-bang play.
The NTDP played an exhibition game in Princeton, New Jersey tonight.
Team USA got a 4-1 win. Here were some of the players who stood out
in this game:
1) Kieffer Bellows - 6-0, 195 - LW - 2016 draft eligible - Buried a goal
down low tonight for the top line. Great speed. Excellent stick and puck
control even in traffic. Really fights for the puck along the wall. Plays on
the power play and the PK.
5) Ty Amonte - 5-11, 185 - RW - 2016 draft eligible - His dad is Tony and
he plays a lot like him. He looks small out there but he was mixing it up.
He's fearless in the dirty areas. He plays with moxy. He has terrific speed
(more than Tony did). He was good on the one or two face-offs he took.
A really solid debut on the 4th line of a very deep team.
2) Clayton Keller - 5-10, 168 - C - 2016 draft eligible - He plays bigger.
He was going up against Princeton's top center, Garrett Skrbich on draws
and did ok. The Princeton center is five years older and over 20 pounds
heavier. When Keller gets stronger, watch out. He set up the Bellow goal.
He looks like the fastest player on the team. He's a playmaking center. He
has great hands and can draw penalties. Quick release on his shot.
Princeton
1) David Hallisey - 5-10, 185 - RW - Previously played in the USPHL. He
can score in traffic. He skates well. He’s a hard worker. He’s a sophomore
to watch.
3) Keenan Suthers - 6-7, 221 - LW - 2016 draft eligible - His speed is so
much better than my last viewing. He had a nice backhanded shot
thwarted in the game but showed great drive to the net. He was hitting
out there. His defense was excellent. He could win a few more battles in
the corners.
2) Chad Krys (2016 draft eligible defenseman) and Adam Fox (2016 draft
eligible defenseman) always stand out so I didn't include them this time
around. They never disappoint on the blueline.

Foxboro, Mass - - On the heels of a 5-1
win for the Montreal Canadiens their
coach, Michel Therrien was on a roll in his
postgame presser. At first he was happy to
get the win. December (3-11-0) was a
rough month for Montreal but so far
January has been good to them.
The Epix film crew has been following
his team around leading up to this big
game and like most coaches he wasn't
loving the extra attention. He initially
talked about it in French but a nice
reported told me the gist of what he was
saying:

the cameras were there. So he was
essentially making excuses for some
previous losses. The funny part about that is the Canadiens have a "No
Excuses" sign in their home locker room.
Bruins Alumni

Foxboro, Mass - - The Boston Bruins won the Winter Classic Alumni
game 5-4, it was decided by the shootout. All the guys had fun out there
and they still love to play the game. Brian Leetch, who logged 61 games
as a Bruin is from the area, starred at Boston College, so he was totally at
home at Gillette Stadium.
"Well, I live here now. I have been here for the past 8 years. My kids
are growing up here. They go to school here. I was lucky to play in Fenway
(2010) when it was just kind of a fun game and it was snowing. It was just
the Bruins alumni."
Anybody who played in Fenway had a different experience in a football
stadium..
"Absolutely. The amount of people. The sight lines. The outdoor
experience is really cool. I never got to experience one of these as a
professional. I really never thought I would play outdoors again until this
idea came about."
Leetch is a pro who understands marketing the game.
"Its kind of one of the signature events for the NHL and the fact that
they have made it a multi-day event. They set stuff up for the families.
They use all the venues around the downtown area. I get it. I give them
all the credit from when it started out it wasn't even a Winter Classic in
Edmonton. To the first game in Buffalo. The fact that it snowed and it got
ratings and had a good game. It has worked out so good for the NHL."
Some Ranger fans were mad that he has been playing for the Bruins
and he has an answer for them, "I didn't trade myself. That`s what I say
to them. There`s one person who you can go to that one about."
He laughed after that. It's water under the bridge.
Therrien has really dialed it down since his Penguins days in Scranton and
Pittsburgh. He's still a very demanding coach but now he is a lot more focused
and doesn't have the outbursts he used to have.
"First of all, my job is never easy," he quipped after a reporter asked him
if this game was easier to manage getting offensive production. "But that's ok.
That's good. That's the reason I became a coach."
Former Princeton goalie and Massachusetts native, Mike Condon, played
an outstanding game. So far his record with Montreal is 11-9-3 with a 2.44
GAA and .907 save percentage. He has been a savior of sorts to the team while
their incumbent backstop, Carey Price, has missed a fair amount of games a
few times this season with a lower body injury. He is a placeholder for Price
but this win could spark another winning streak for the Canadiens.
"Yeah I thought he played well, he was our best player today period," said
P.K. Subban. "There is no question about it. When you look at the success that
we have had over the last month and a half, when he is our best player, we
win."
Condon had a spectacular glove save late in the second period. He had a
solid game. It was a bit quiet in the first but then business picked up a bit. He
stopped 27 of 28 shots overall.
"I think I even saw coach smile a little bit," said Brendan Gallagher, who
returned to this game from an injury. "During a game that`s rare to see so it's
certainly something you don`t expect him to make."
"New Year, big win. Hopefully January is nicer to us," said Condon.
67,246 attended this game. The crowd was quiet at times but there was a
fair amount of action. There were six even strength goals and a fight between
Jimmy Hayes and Lars Eller, the second in Winter Classic history (Eller had his
gloves on so it wasn't`t listed as a fighting major but Hayes pummeled him).
Next year Ottawa, Montreal or Toronto may host an outdoor game for
the NHL's centennial celebration. It`s just a rumor but it makes sense.

Notes: P.K. Subban used 3 pairs of skates in this game. One in each
period. 2009 had 10 goals, the most in WC play when Detroit beat Chicago
6-4. The six today was the second largest output. This game did feature six
even strength goals, a winter classic record.

Valley Forge Colonials Peewee AA

When most people are thinking about turkey and Football, the Valley
Forge Colonials Peewee AA ice hockey team was hard at work. The 2015
“The Pond” Thanksgiving Hockey Classic in Newark, Delaware was about
to settled. Led by Head coach Jeff Malik, the 2003 birth year arrived for
their first game. The nemesis would be a spirited team called the Long
Beach Lightning. University of Delaware location was to be the site of this
first tilt. Despite not having five regular players due to holiday travel, an
early lead by the Colonials four goals to one in the first period. A
scoreless second period only to have a tuff lightning squad pull the score
four goals to three in favor of VF in the early stages of the third period.
An empty net goal secured the LB Lighting fate. Thus victory for the young
Colonial team, securing four valuable points. Another game later that
evening for the lads was played at The Pond in Newark, DE. The
nighttime game against the Freeport Arrows was a rendition of earlier in
the day with the victory for our local young men. Day 2 two would present
a tough known opponent the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The very same
club that had handed the Colonials lads a crushing six goals to two defeat
earlier in the DVHL season. This was “THE” must win contest needing the
win for a finals berth. Emotional fortitude had prevailed this day a
convincing three to nothing win. Apperently the Long beach squad was
on a similar mission. The finals would be a rematch from the previous
day. VF Jack Rogacki scores two goals in the first for an early lead. The
second stanza has colonial netminder Tyler Temoyan putting a wall in
front of the net. Early in the third period LBL puts home a tally to close
the contest to one goal. But Rogacki would not let this be the day and
scores again, three goals to two VF. The lightning tenacity and will score
with a minute left in regulation. Fans are roaring and the crowd in a frenzy
as the Colonials ice the puck and set the stage for drama. Coach Malik,
Hudak , Milhouse and Coach Rogacki (dad) put their best team forward.
The ensuing faceoff with fifteen seconds Adam Carter pushes the puck up
the boards, youe guessed it Jacob Rogacki puts it down the ice number
four! Champions. An astounding eighteen goals for the team allowing
only eight. Undefeated tournament.
