Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony
On November 10, Chamber members
and friends from around Warrensburg
joined Tim and Patty Williamson in
celebrating their new restaurant,
Soup & Salad.
The bright, cheerful environment set
the tone for a fun event! Tim and Patty
encourage customers to write on their
chalkboard walls, which has obviously
brought out the creativity of lots of
Warrensburg residents including Tony Monetti!
Soup & Salad features ever-changing
daily soups, which are updated on their
Facebook page, as well as a huge fresh
salad bar and yummy breadsticks.
At the Ribbon Cutting ceremony
Chamber Ambassador Jim Joyner, with
Insurance Associates of Johnson
County, and Chamber Board member
Rick Solomon, with Alpha Property
Management, hold the ribbon
as Patty does the honors.
For more information about Soup &
Salad check out their Facebook page.

Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony
A great crowd for the "heavy-duty"
Open House and Ribbon Cutting
on Friday, Nov. 13!
Swisher Acquisition, Inc. had a slew of
powerful new equipment to show off, and
we were so glad to get to help them do
that with this event. From BIG zero-turn
mowers to brush clearing equipment, log
splitters, and storm shelters, SAI reviewed
each piece with the Chamber members in
attendance, pointing out the features that
make their products unique.
One thing everyone loves about Swisher
products: They're designed and built right
here in Warrensburg by our neighbors!
At the Ribbon Cutting ceremony
Chamber Board member Scott Patrick,
Superintendent of the Warrensburg R-VI
Schools, and Chamber Ambassador Scott
Crist, Director of the Western Missouri
Medical Center Foundation, secure the
ribbon as Ken McAninch, Director of IT
and HR for Swisher, does the honors.
After the event, a talented employee
made a wreath with their ribbon!
For more information about these new
Swisher products - including the batteryoperated ECOsplit log splitter - contact
them at 660-422-6079 or
visit www.swisherinc.com.

Chamber Networking Luncheon
The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce hosted a Networking Luncheon
on Wednesday, November 18 at Luigi’s
Italian Restaurant.
Our guest speaker was Harold Stewart,
City Manager, who gave an update of
the many projects City staff and
Council are working on.
He first mentioned that he’s been used
to coming into a community and
having to “fix” a lot about the workings
of the City, but that this wasn’t the
case in Warrensburg; we’ve got a solid
financial standing and great staff.
He discussed the community’s
infrastructure plans, as well as plans
for storm water, signage, and the
comprehensive plan.
Economic development is his favorite
area to work on, and he reviewed the
City’s work in the areas of retail
recruitment, the industrial park, the
Hawthorne and Keystone
developments, and entrance signs.
Stay up to date with the City’s activities by following their Facebook page.
During the event the City of
Warrensburg was acknowledged for
their Chamber Sponsorship; Mayor
Robin Allen accepted the Sponsor
Package from Chamber Board Chair
Casey Lund.
Casey also introduced Jeff Samborski
with the Jackson County Extension
SBTDC. Jeff will be providing marketing
assistance to our Chamber members.
New member Doug Spratley with
Nightwatch Security & Telephone
attended and introduced
himself and his company.

Warrensburg Native
Cynthia Johnson Named
Keynote Speaker for
2016 MLK Celebration
Kansas City educator and nationally recognized speaker and consultant Cynthia “Mama J” Johnson will be the keynote speaker for
the University of Central Missouri’s annual Freedom Scholarship
Dinner, planned for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, in the Elliott
Student Union ballroom. The event is the highlight of the university’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, “Equity and Education Still Matter.”
The event also will honor the spring 2015 recipients of UCM’s Dr. Martin Luther King Freedom Scholarships. The
scholarships, which are supported through the UCM Foundation with proceeds from the Freedom Scholarship Dinner, are awarded each spring to students who will attend UCM in the fall. Student to be honored are Aimee
Ekstrom, Elexus Edwards, Mathew Martinez, Lindsay King and Katherine Kim.
A UCM alumna, Johnson also is a Warrensburg native, the daughter of the late Albert Johnson and the late Dorothy
Johnson, a longtime UCM employee. Cynthia Johnson received her Bachelor of Science in Education degree in
speech, theatre and special education and Master of Science in Education degree in secondary education from
UCM. She received her Doctor of Education degree in Education Leadership from Baker University.
Johnson will bring her “Message of Hope” to the event, sharing her experiences as a child who struggled with a
speech impediment, learning disabilities and difficulty reading. She credits her faith, hope and determination with
helping her succeed as an educator. She draws on her experiences as an educator, advocate, researcher, author,
vocalist and entrepreneur to help other dispel myths about poor and minority youth by empowering students and
adults to achieve their highest potential.
While a student at UCM, Johnson was the first inductee into the Podium of Honor as a member of the Talking
Mules speech and debate squad for earning the Outstanding Collegiate Competitor Award. Upon graduation from
UCM, she spent 10 years as a classroom teacher prior to her career in education administration as an assistant
high school principal for two years and a middle school principal for 11 years. She then became a consultant for the
National Middle School Association before joining the staff of the University of Missouri-Kansas City as director of
alternative teacher certification.
In addition to teaching as adjunct faculty, Johnson also has served UCM as a member of the College of Education
Advisory Council, Charter School Renewal Committee and DESE Leadership Revision Committee. She served on
the board of directors of the Missouri Staff Development Council and the Graduate Program Advisory Committee for
UMKC.
Tickets for the Freedom Scholarship Dinner are from the UCM Office of Mentoring, Advocacy and Peer Support,
Dockery 212, or by calling 660-543-4156. Tickets also will be available through the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, 100 South Holden St. Individual tickets for the dinner may be purchased at the gold level for $100, the silver
level for $75, or the bronze level for $50. Sponsored tables of eight also are available for purchase at the gold, silver and bronze levels.
The Freedom Scholarship Dinner has funded 185 scholarships totaling more than $169,000 since its inception in
1998.
Additional events for the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration include Greater Warrensburg Area Chamber
of Commerce Community Service Award luncheon; the Community Worship and Praise Service; the Issues Forum;
the MLK Day of Service; and the Student Volunteer Fair and Community Service Blood Drive and Bone Marrow

as a Business Owner
Let Us Promote YOU!
We’ve got two great opportunities coming up:
 The Member Relations Committee makes visits to our new and
seasoned members to say “Thank You” for their membership
investment. As part of their visits they leave “goodies” from fellow
Chamber members—and they’re running low!
 At our Member Orientation on December 8 we’ll be giving away
goodies to attendees to keep it fun. :)
Do you have promotional items you’d like us to share?
Pens, koozies, magnets, or other branded items? Candies
with your business card attached work great too! Contact

The Power of Recognizing Your Employees’ Work
Two weeks ago we did a tip on “Small Gifts,” and in a
bit of serendipity we came across this November 9
HBR article, “The Easiest Thing You Can Do to Be a
Great Boss.”
David Sturt, Executive Vice President at O.C. Tanner
Co., writes that recent studies show “there’s one simple action that can dramatically increase any manager’s success in gaining the support and engagement
of subordinates: recognize great work. That means calling out excellent accomplishments by your
employees right away—and doing so in consistent and regular increments from the start.”
He says: “We know from our own research that a handwritten note trumps an e-mail. Public recognition in a meeting or peer group makes people feel even more appreciated. And an award presented in a public setting is most effective in conveying a sense of a good job properly acknowledged.”
Interestingly, the effect is wide ranging: “In one study, we found that just by publicly presenting
some employees with a “years of service” award, managers could increase all employees’ sense
that the organization cared about them."
Do it right away and in consistent and regular increments.

A team of two marketing students from the University of
Central Missouri claimed the top award in the 2016 State

at UCM.
Kylie Marconnet, a marketing major from Maysville, Mo.,
and Robert Hughey, a marketing major from Overland Park,

against teams from 11 schools from across the country.
The annual competition is hosted by the UCM Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies in cooperation

The Team Award was presented to the two students from the university with the highest combined student

“I am extremely proud of Kylie and Robert,” Killian said. “Their hard work and preparation truly paid off. It
was a tremendous honor to work with these two outstanding individuals and watch them showcase their
skills and represent UCM.” Also participating in the competition were teams from Arizona State University,
Duquesne University, University of Georgia, University of Houston, University of Minnesota, University of
Missouri, University of Oregon, University of Southern California, Texas State University, Wake Forest
University and Western Michigan University.
Also placing in the competition were: Marketing Presentation: Emily Martin and Jake Vasquez, University
of Oregon, second place, $3,000 award; Sam Bell and Lauren Bone, Western Michigan University, third

The State Farm Marketing and Sales Competition originated in 2010 with a gift from State Farm to the
UCM Foundation. Hosted annually by UCM, the event offers an opportunity for the best and brightest marketing students to test their individual and team marketing skills by competing with peers from universities
from across the United States.
