Actually, it’s all of you working with us which makes it all possible. Thank you, our members, donors and volunteers, for making 2014 a year with great accomplishments in Conservation, Trails and Education here in Lassen Our Water, Wildlife & Working Lands through Conservation v With assistance from the California C o u n c i l o f L a n d Tr u s t s , L LT T completed the assessment process for accreditation through the Land Trust Alliance, the national professional association, which sets standards for non-profit private land trusts like L a s s e n L a n d a n d Tr a i l s Tr u s t . Accreditation is growing in importance as funders, agencies and landowners, as well as the IRS, increasingly look to it as a measure of a land trust’s standards of practice. v Installation of interpretive information for wildlife and wild fire restoration was completed at Lassen Creek Conservation Area through funding from the California Department of Parks and Recreation through Prop 84 and dedicated on National Trails Day in June. Connect With Facebook— Lassen Land Trust v Funding was successfully secured from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners Program for the restoration of the Upper Stephens Meadow, a riparian meadow along Pine Creek, a primary tributary to Eagle Lake. With restoration, the meadow and LASSEN LAND & TRAILS TRUST 1 ‘Thank you for all you do —Linda Dunn to make the area we live in that much better!’ —Linda Dunn County. Work which means you, your family and neighbors continue to thrive here and enjoy our home. creek will better sustain water quality and quantity for Eagle Lake and provide better habitat for wildlife such as native California trout and migratory birds. v We continued efforts to secure funding for two important conservation projects, which will help to improve and conserve two tributaries to the Susan River. We look forward to sharing more in 2015 Trails v Improvements were completed on Viewland, Snowstorm & Sage Hen Segments of the Modoc Line Rail Trail including grading, signage & maps through funding from the California State Parks & Recreation’s OHV Access funds and Yahmaha OHV Access. In addition, the Trust received an additional grant for 2015 to support work on the trail v The Recreational Trails Program, funded by the Federal Highway Authority through the State Parks & Recreation Department, awarded a grant to fund acquisition of the property between the depot and Alexander Road to extend the Bizz and connect to the county’s CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 A YEAR IN REVIEW CONTINUED proposed Skyline Extension and bike trail. This will be a great community park, as well as an important connector for our regional trails system. v Four miles of shared use trail were completed at Lassen Creek Conservation Area with the help from the High Desert, CCC Antelope Crew. Joel Rathje, County Trail Coordinator and Franc Guistino, a member and volunteer who built the boardwalk. v A spanking brand new map for the Bizz Johnson was completed, which includes the south side trail and represents all of the partners on the trail. v The depot, Trust staff and volunteer docents welcomed over 3,600 visitors to Lassen and the Bizz from 28 states and three foreign countries, the Netherlands, Brittain and Germany. The majority (78%) of visitors hailed from other parts of California and our neighboring states; 10% of our visits were from our own neighbors in Lassen County, and the remaining 12% represented those from across the rest of the country and our foreign visitors. v Trust volunteer trail monitors were eyes and ears for our partners on the Bizz helping to identify repairs, use patterns and check the pet waste receptacles on the lower Bizz. v And we celebrated the 22nd year for the Rails to Trails Festival in support of our region’s trails with over 1,200 attending, handcar teams, chili and salsa competitors and great community participation from the Lassen County Historical Society, National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Lassen County Master Gardeners. Learning through Hands-on Experience & Education v First inaugural programs were held at Lassen Creek Conservation Area’s wildlife center. v The Lassen County Environmental Education Collaborative, a partnership with Lassen National Forest, BLM Eagle Lake Field Office and the Lassen County Office of Education, completed its second full academic year—impacting over 1,200 students throughout Lassen County from 3rd grade through high school. Programs included the Trailside Science Toolbox, an in-school resource for 4th and 5th grades; Day in the Desert for 5th grade students; Camp in the Forest for 6th grade students; Nature Camp, a summer day camp for children ages 8 through 12; and a youth initiative which gives 14 through 19 year olds opportunities to learn about natural resource management from working professionals while applying that knowledge in the field. Youth assisted the BLM at the wild horse and burro corrals and with restoration plantings for the Rush Fire and assisted the Trust at Lassen Creek Conservation Area and at the Rails to Trails Festival. v Discover Lassen came back to life! Programs and hikes were held throughout the county...all volunteer led! Thank you, Suzanne Macdonald, Andrew Haut, Steven Fleming and Julie McKee. Look for more great adventures in 2015! To be sure you don’t miss a thing, like the Trust on Facebook at LassenLandTrust or join Discover Lassen at www.MeetUp.com. Plus… v The Fundraising/Community Outreach Committee led the Board of Directors and community stakeholders in visioning for the Trust’s future impact in our community and which will drive strategic planning for the next 5 years v The Trust hosted the 20th season of the Farmers’ Market with help from vendors; Mavery & Jim Uptegrove, the season’s part-time volunteer market managers, and volunteers who hosted the ‘welcome’ table. Special thanks to Banner Lassen Medical Center and Starbucks, the market’s partners and sponsors for the 2014 season. v Hundreds enjoyed the 18th annual Paiute Meadows Run for Trails. Special thanks to all of the volunteers and great community partners. v The good folks at Lassen Ale Works hosted the first Meat Raffle to raise funds to support the Trust’s work. Lassen Creek Conservation Area LASSEN LAND & TRAILS TRUST 2 WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS Lassen Land & trails Trust The mission of Lassen Land and Trails Trust is to conserve significant natural areas and agricultural landscapes and to promote and enhance a public trail system throughout Lassen County. BOARD OFFICERS President—Tim Garrod Vice President—Liz Norton Secretary—Jeff Fontana Treasurer—Carol Curry BOARD OF DIRECTORS Andrew Bertotti BJ Hubbard Phil Nemir Peter Talia Al Vasquez Paul Whitcome BOARD ADVISOR Carol Curry, CPA In 2015, the Board of Directors, staff, partners and you will begin developing a strategic plan to guide us for the next 5 years. Your thoughts and ideas will help to refine that plan, which will include goals for conservation, trails and education. In addition, the plan will address how we’ll face increasing fiscal challenges and achieve accreditation from the Land Trust Alliance, our professional association. The underlying objective for this plan is how we will all work together to ensure that we, our children and future generations continue to enjoy a unique and valuable way of life—one that prospers from our rich natural resources, scenic vistas, and abundant wildlife. We will be working together to ensure a thriving community, one where we are connected to one another through that way of life and are able to support our homes and businesses, while enjoying access to the great outdoors where we can camp, hike, hunt, fish, ride bikes and motorcycles and enjoy desert and forest vistas in a crossroads of landscapes like no other. This is our vision and we hope you’ll join us. Our Water, Wildlife & Working Lands through Conservation v Work will continue on the wildlife center at Lassen Creek Conservation Area—watch for programs in the spring! v Boots will be on the ground for the meadow restoration along Pine Creek in Upper Stephens Meadow with work scheduled through late summer and monitoring over the next two years. Trails v With support from the National Park Service’s Conservation, Rivers and Trails Assistance Program, planning and initial development of the Bizz Extension will be in full swing. We hope you’ll all be a part of this project. Save the date—Friday, April 24. Everyone will have an important role to play. v And so much more… LASSEN LAND & TRAILS TRUST 3 LETTER FROM PAST PRESIDENT In 1990, the start of my first stint as President, the Trust owned the Depot, but half of it had burned, the inside of the building was a mess and the surrounding area was dirt. Frankly, I thought of it as an albatross around the Trust’s neck. Our annual income was about $9,000 and half of that went to pay for property insurance. The initial Board had stuck their necks out and acquired the facility without any real plan for funding all of the work needed. Yet, Lon Fitton, Jim Saake and Stan Bales had crafted a vision that the Depot could be used as a visitor center, trailhead for the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail and community icon for the Trust. Lo and behold, with persistence, hard work, astounding volunteer hours, a solid vision and agency and community support, the Depot re-opened in 1994, and after more than 20 years, it’s still a vibrant center for the community. The Trust did the same thing with the Modoc Line Rail Trail. The 86 mile rail corridor was acquired by the Trust in 2008 when others were reluctant to step up, but the Trust recognized the long-term potential for recreational access to the high desert for all. With hard work, persistence, careful planning and agency and community support, three segments of the trail have been improved and the Trust continues to seek assistance to do more. Unlike the Bizz Johnson Trail, the Modoc Line has greater potential for motorized use than pedestrian, and the planning and development reflects that broad constituency. The Trust’s conservation work continues, even though some projects might be early to list in this report. There are projects in the wings to protect and enhance wetlands and meadows and to ensure that a significant piece of a Honey Lake Valley farm land stays in agricultural use for the long haul. When we acquire funding for these projects and close the deals, we think that you, our members, will be pleased with the conservation work you are supporting. Thank you all for your contributions of time, money and energy in 2014. It is invaluable to the sustainability of the Trust, its operation and work. And finally, I wish to thank all of you over the years for your continuing support. It’s time for a change, and I have great faith that Tim Garrod will provide strong leadership as he takes over as President. All the best in 2015!
