Letter from the President Meet Skylar Diggins
Fall Edition August 2013 Vol. 14 No. 1 The Quarterly Newsletter of the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix Letter from the President "WE ARE ND!!" students. This signature cheer is one we all have heard, and likely joined, when attending a Notre Dame sporting event. These three simple words convey identity, pride and a sense of belonging to something larger than one's self. Indeed, we are part of we fondly know as the "Notre Dame family." Our Notre Dame family, both in Phoenix and throughout Arizona, is vibrant and active. For the better part of a half-century, the goal of the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix has been to support and nourish our Notre Dame family here in the Southwest. That remains our goal and mission today. Among the ways the Club supports our Notre Dame family here in the Southwest are: - Supporting Students: The Club is pleased to provide scholarships to local students with a finanical need. For the upcoming academic year, the Club has awarded scholarships to over 20 - Supporting Alumni: The Club sponsors social events (such as football game watches, happy hours, and golf tournaments), educational seminars (at least two annual Hesburgh lectures), and spiritual opportunities (there have been over 12 Notre Dame masses in the last year alone). - Supporting our Community: The Club offers the opportunity to participate -- as the Notre Dame Club -- in numerous community service activities. From volunteering at the Andre House, to working on a "clean-up" morning at Maggie's Place, to donating books to the VA hospital, to contributing water and summer heat relief supplies for St. Joseph the Worker's Thirst Aid, our Club members give back to the community as a Notre Dame Family. These are just some of the legacy activities that our Club has sponsored, become known for, and received awards for. In fact, our Club has been recognized by the University for excellence for at least the past 5 years. So, what does the future hold? Over continued on page 2... Meet Skylar Diggins The ND Club of Phoenix ND Women Connect is excited to bring you a very special event! The Phoenix Mercury will host Skylar Diggins and the Tulsa Shock on Sunday, August 11 at 3pm. The Mercury have invited us to have a meet and greet with Skylar after the game! Tickets are $25 and are in the lower bowl of the Arena. Just FYI, This event is for the entire ND we have to sell at least community, including friends, family and 30 tickets for the meet and greet, so invite subway alumni, not just ND Women, so we friends and family! continued on page 2... www.ndclubofphoenix.com News & Notes Club Updates Bylaws and Elects New Officers Brand New Watch Party Sites Notre Dame History Professor, Jon Coleman, Receives Guggenheim Fellowship ND Joins the ACC in all sports but Football and Hockey OFFICERS President Chris Coury ‘91, ‘94 JD 602-440-4847 President-Elect John Bechtold ‘63 480-889-0908 Past President Marc Echeveste ‘95 602-570-8644 Vice President Chris Zeches vicepresident@ndclubofphoenix.com Treasurer JJ Vega '07 treasurer@ndclubofphoenix.com Secretary Karin Boergers '99 secretary@ndclubofphoenix.com Club Chaplain Fr. Professional networking events: Notre Dame alumni have an amazing sense of identity when it comes to cheering the Fighting Irish on to victory. Our Club wants to foster and support the same sense of identity for ND alums as they work in boardrooms, conference rooms, operating rooms and courtrooms, and we will do this by sponsoring professional networking and mentorship events. B. The "Proud to be ND - Desert Series": We are about to enter an exciting 18 month period. With Notre Dame's football team playing Arizona State twice in 14 months -- in Dallas this fall, and then here in Tempe in November 2014 -- the Club intends to schedule special activities for our Notre Dame Club of Phoenix family -- both to allow us to celebrate this special time. Our Notre Dame family is embarking upon an exciting and dynamic time here in the Phoenix area. I invite and challenge you to do two things: 1. Register as a member of the Club. This way, you can receive all of the information about current events. It also will qualify you for the chance to participate in any allotment of tickets that our Club receives (such as, for bowl games) during the next year. 2. Attend one new Notre Dame Club event in 2013-14. Whether you have been away from the Club, or whether you are very active in the Club's various activities, I invite you to attend one event that you have not previously attended. I have every confidence that you will have a good time, and you likely will meet new members of our ND family in Phoenix. YOU ARE ND! I wholeheartedly welcome and encourage you to join, and become an active member of, one of the best Notre Dame clubs in the country -the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix! Let's band together, wake up the echos here in the desert, and proudly show that WE ARE ND!! God Bless and Go Irish! Teaching is such an important profession, yet teachers are consumed with multiple responsibilities and don't often get the opportunity to be reinvigorated. The Notre Dame Excellence in Teaching Conference is an excellent opportunity for educators to learn, reflect, www.ndclubofphoenix.com 3 Ticket & Community Interest Boards The Club's website features a couple of message boards available for our members. The first is a ticket board for those who are looking to buy and sell tickets at face value. (University policy prohibits scalping.) Box 1071, Phoenix, AZ 85001-1071 www.ndclubofphoenix.com www.facebook.com/NDPhoenix July 2013 Greetings, Notre Dame Family, The past year in Notre Dame sports was certainly exciting, filled with many ups and downs. Some of the highlights included an undefeated regular season in football and a spot in the BCS championhip, a Big East Championship and another Final Four for women's basketball, a CCHA Title for the hockey team, mens' lacrosse and mens' soccer were ranked #1 during the season, and mens' basketball's thrilling triple-overtime win over eventual champion, Louisville. We had our share of disappointments and setbacks, too… which I'll mercifully skip. In so many ways, it's been a very similar year for the Club and our local ND family. We've seen a remarkable increase in membership along with successful reinventions of longstanding events like the Hesburgh Lecture and UND Night. We've updated our bylaws, welcomed a new President and officers, are working on expanding the Board and continuing to reach out to our members and the community. We've also had our share of disappointments and some personal tragedies. Life is like that. I don't claim to know what's going to happen this year nor will I guarantee that football will be back in the BCS Championship in Pasadena. What I do know is that the people we have the privilege to bring together, the opportunity to serve our community and our efforts to better each other and those around us -- so many of the many things Notre Dame instills in us -- these things matter. They may not get the acclaim of an undefeated season in football, but they're the glue that holds us together. While we've done much to try to improve the Club and to better serve more of our members, there's more to be done. We invite you to be a part of it -- whether that's through membership (after all, this IS a membership drive), serving on the Board or volunteering, attending events or supporting the Club in other ways. You can help make us even better! We hope to see you this year and plan on a big Phoenix contingent when we watch the Irish take on Arizona State in Dallas! We'll also be eagerly planning for the rematch in Tempe in 2014. Your participation and support for the 2014 game is appreciated! Thank you and GO IRISH!
