Inside Back Cover 5 The President’s Page The President’s Page Once again we say goodbye to summer, and look ahead to another studio year sure to be filled with excitements, joys and certainly a few challenges. An outstanding way to inspire and revitalize your teaching in the new year is to attend our upcoming NCMTA State Conference, October 27 – 30th at beautiful Salem College. Our conference chair, Diane Blanchard, with the support of our onsite host, Dr. Thomas Swenson, is planning another great conference that will include many opportunities for professional growth, new discoveries in music education, exhilarating concerts, MTNA competitions, and of course, great socializing and networking with your NCMTA friends and colleagues. And, I hope you’ll take this opportunity to invite a local colleague to join us for this 53rd annual conference, so you can introduce them firsthand to the many rewarding benefits of membership in NCMTA. We are especially pleased to welcome Marina Lomazov as our 2011 NCMTA Conference Artist. Her performance on Friday evening will be followed on Saturday and Sunday with sessions on the Russian Piano School, a brief overview of methodology, and preparing students for college auditions. We’ll also enjoy sessions by Robert Vandall, beloved teacher, composer and arranger, from Alfred Publishing. Another exciting highlight this year will be the performance of the Oakton Six Piano Ensemble from Chicago, a performance not to be missed! Please check out the full schedule of sessions and performances in this issue, as Diane has prepared a banquet of delectable sessions to entice you to attend this outstanding conference. Hats off to Diane for her dedicated work over many months in preparing for this upcoming weekend! As I wind down my office as NCMTA President, I want to extend my sincerest appreciation to my NCMTA Board colleagues and the entire membership for your support and understanding, during a very difficult time in my life. I will be forever grateful for the many expressions of sympathy and compassion on the loss of my husband last year. As members of NCMTA, we are not only dedicated teachers, but caring professionals who form a unique support system for one another. I am so thankful to be the recipient of the best that NCMTA has to offer. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving you and the needs of our membership. I wish you all the best in the coming year, and look forward to seeing you in October! Following prizes in the Cleveland International Piano Competition, William Kapell International Piano Competition, Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and Hilton Head International Piano Competition, Ms. Lomazov has given performances throughout North America, South America, England, France, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia, Japan and in most of the fifty states in the U.S. Before immigrating to the United States, Marina studied at the Kiev Conservatory where she became the youngest First Prize Winner of the all-Kiev Piano Competition. Oakton Six The Oakton Six Piano Ensemble is a performance group comprised of adult students who are chosen through a highly selective audition process. The ensemble performs repertoire from the classical, ragtime, and popular periods that is transcribed for the six pianos by its founder and conductor Glenna Sprague, Professor and Coordinator of Music at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Illinois. The rich, layered sound of the Oakton Six Piano Ensemble is comparable to that of an orchestra, with each member playing a different part of a composition as the melody transfers from pianist to pianist. Critics hail the Six Piano Ensemble as “extraordinary”, “unique”, and “musical”. 22 The artistic success of the Oakton Six Piano Ensemble has resulted in prominent concert engagements across the United States and Europe, including the College Music Society International Conference in Vienna, Austria; Music Teachers National Association National Conference in Atlanta (GA) and Spokane (WA) as well as numerous MTA state conferences; National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy Forum at University of Oklahoma; National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, Civic Opera House and Navy Pier in Chicago; the Hawaii Music Teachers Association in Honolulu and the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) State Convention in Los Angeles. In 2008, renowned composer Robert Vandall created a special piece for the ensemble entitled Oakton Toccata and published by Alfred Publishing Company. It is one of the pieces the ensemble will perform during the session. The group has recently released a compact disc, Oakton Six Piano Ensemble: Live in Concert II. An active performer, clinician, and adjudicator in the Chicago area, Glenna Sprague is Professor and Coordinator of Music at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Illinois, where she teaches piano, class piano and the Six Piano Ensemble. She has served as a panelist at the GP3 conference, the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, Illinois Arts Council, and the music advisory panel of the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Ms. Sprague has been published in Keyboard Companion and American Music Teacher. Professor Sprague is a magna cum laude graduate of the Conservatory of Music at Capital University, and received her Master of Music in piano performance from Ohio University, where she studied with Gail Berenson. During the session, the Oakton Six Piano Ensemble will perform works arranged for the six pianos including: Neue Spanische Tänz in E-flat Major, Op. 65, No. 1....................... DESCRIPTION OF THIS CITY Commissioned by the North Carolina Music Teachers Association in conjunction with the Music Teachers National Association, This City is a work for pianist Mabel Kwan and generative electronics. There is no printed score; rather, the pianist plays music generated for her in real time, which appears on a computer screen. Each instance of generated material is unique, ensuring that no two performances of This City will be the same, although the piece will always be recognizable as itself. This ‘constant identity’ in the midst of ‘constant variety’ is ensured by the careful selection of the harmonic materials with which the music is constructed. The computer will never generate materials from harmonies not specified in advance by the composer. Moreover, the way the computer generates materials—regarding, for example, the length and contour of melodic phrases, textural density, rhythmic complexity—has been determined in advance by the composer to ensure that each generation is acceptable and representative of the composer’s aesthetic. This City represents, in part, the navigation of the composer’s musical mind by software. This City is also a partial setting of Robert Fitterman’s sprawling, multi25 book poem, Metropolis XXX (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire), read by Nathan Wilson. Nathan’s voice is diffused among and mixed with both the material generated by the computer and atmospheric sounds drawn from field recordings. There is no beginning to This City in the traditional sense: no introduction, no exposition, no development, no indicators from the composer (“This is the main idea! Listen to how I develop it!”) You simply turn the software on and the pianist starts playing. This City can sustain and, indeed, encourages many levels of attention on the part of listener, from focused, intense listening (think Bach fugues) to daydreaming (“Maybe I should have been an architect...” “I wonder if we need milk...”) and everything in between. There is also no end to This City in much the same way that there is no choreographed end to the experience of viewing a painting: you turn it off or leave the room as you would walk away from a canvas.
