Named after Royal Professor Ungku Aziz for his contribution to the field of poverty research in Malaysia, the position is named in appreciation and recognition of his many years of struggle for the impoverished. 2014 is the inaugural year of the CPDS Royal Professor Ungku Aziz Public Lecture Series. This public lecture series will host national figures who have made unparalleled contributions to the nation's development. This initiative is taken by CPDS to honour their sacrifices and create a platform for an exchange of ideas, debates and discourse in the area of development and growth. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will deliver the premiere lecture and launch the Royal Professor Ungku Aziz Public Lecture Series. Tun Dr. Mahathir's vast knowledge and experience has a huge impact on the evolution and growth of poverty and development studies in Malaysia. His presence at the lecture series acknowledges the pivotal role that he played in Malaysia's efforts to become a developed country and achieve Wawasan 2020.
