Look for great things to happen in 2010! Sue Lunsford to Serve as Chamber Chair for 2010 Sue Lunsford will serve as the 2010 Chamber Chairperson! We are excited to have Sue serve the Chamber in this capacity. For many years she has been a leader in the Chamber and its various activities. Sue is a native Oklahoman, born in Oklahoma City. However, due to her father’s occupation as a geologist, the family began transfers with the oil company when Sue was nine months old. Moves took them to several places in Kansas, Texas, and Arkansas and finally back to Oklahoma after she graduated from high school in Corpus Christi, Texas. Sue attended the University of Oklahoma where she received her BA and Master of Social Work degrees. She continues to hold her Licensed Clinical Social Worker credentials, allowing her to enter private practice if she chooses. Sue is a member of the Cherokee Nation. Sue’s professional career in mental health spans 40 plus years, and includes working with the developmentally disabled, the juvenile court system, and adoption and foster home services. Prior to moving to Ponca City she worked for eighteen years as Director of Social Work Services at Arkansas City Memorial Hospital, covering both in-patient services and the emergency room. In 1989 Sue was offered the opportunity to help develop and implement the Employee Assistance Program at Conoco Inc., which would manage the mental health and substance abuse services for the company. Sue moved to Ponca City at that time and has since called this community her home. After moving to Ponca City, she met Ray Lunsford, and they married on Feb. 26, 1993. Sue retired as EAP Regional Coordinator for ConocoPhillips in February, 2005 in order to spend more time with Ray, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease several years earlier. Ray passed away on Nov. 14, 2009. Sue has two daughters, Stacy Pike and Melissa (Mrs. Richard) Hollister, both of Arkansas City, KS, a step-daughter Darla (Mrs. Jimmy) Howe of Grove, OK, and a step-son, Greg Lunsford of Edmond, OK. Sue and Ray have eight grandchildren ranging in age from fourteen to thirty-one. Continued on p.2 Page 2 www.poncacitychamber.com Volume 32, Issue 1 Sue Lunsford.... Continued Sue’s community activities, in addition to the Chamber, include serving on boards for the University of Oklahoma Alumni Association, the OU School of Social Work, the OU Athletic Advisory Council, and the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, as well as a volunteer for the Ponca City Domestic Violence/SANE program and Hospice of North Central Oklahoma. For the past 25 years she has volunteered a week each summer with Camp Hope, an American Cancer Society camp in Kansas for children with cancer, and also serves on their planning board. Sue is an active member of First United Methodist Church and she and Ray went on several mission trips to Mexico with the church. In her free time Sue follows OU football and women’s basketball, enjoys snow-skiing and spending time with her grandchildren and their activities. Sue has been active with the Leadership Ponca City Program, having been in the program in 1992 and also serving as a quad chair for many years. Sue also serves on several Chamber Committees. 116th Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet Thursday, January 28th Get Your Tickets Today! Two years ago when I said ―yes‖ to serving in the rotation of the Executive Board, the Chairmanship seemed far off. To be honest, I thought perhaps I’d been asked to serve so Rich would have another OU person on the Board! Nonetheless, I did say yes and I stepped into a steep learning curve. As many of you know, my entire 40 year professional career has been in the field of mental health, with limited experience in business, as such. So, it seemed the best way for me to learn some of what I felt I needed to know, was to immerse myself in Chamber committees…attending as many of them as possible. That’s what I’ve tried to do the past two years, and I feel much more comfortable and prepared for this new role, although I still have a lot to learn. In thinking about what I hope to see the Chamber accomplish in the coming year, several things have come to mind. Naturally, we’re all excited about the opening of the YMCA Sports Complex in October 2010…watching the walls for the pool, the climbing wall, and the ball-field lights go up. This will be so good for Ponca City’s economy and the well-being of our community, as well as improving the growth and value of the west side of Ponca City. Also, in 2010, the University Center will be renovating and moving into a new location that offers better accessibility and visibility; new educational opportunities for our community and surrounding area. Our downtown improvements— sidewalks, lights, new store fronts--are beautiful and offer greater safety for patrons. We want to keep improving the downtown area in order to draw more shoppers from the area. We have some thoughts on how this could happen and also add to the tourism appeal of downtown, and plan to talk further with Jayne Detten and Main Street. Speaking of Tourism…it’s at an all-time high! More and more folks from Oklahoma, from all over the US and even foreign countries are discovering the jewel that we are. We want to continue to find ways to draw people here so that our jewels will shine even brighter. And what better way to draw people than to have an Event Center?? We have had to turn away numerous large conventions and conferences simply because we cannot accommodate their needs for meeting space. It is imperative that we find a solution to this issue, whether it be a new facility or remodeling an existing building. We need to come together as a community and bring our ideas and creative thinking to meet this challenge in order to add to the economy of Ponca City and expose more people to all we have to offer. When I took the job with Conoco, Inc., there was no question in my mind but that I would move to Ponca City. Even though I’d lived in Ark City for 25 years, it was time to me for establish a new life, and that’s what Ponca City offered me. I’d always been impressed with what a clean and pretty town Ponca was, and also found a loving supportive community. Of course, meeting the man I eventually married here was a bonus! What I’ve observed in the 20 years I’ve been a resident, and especially since becoming involved with the Chamber, is the remarkable working relationship among the Chamber, the City, PCDA, and County Commissioners…most cities don’t seem to have these kinds of relationships…and this is what I believe helps make us such a strong and resilient community. You may wonder, what can you expect of me as Chamber Chair? I’ve touched on some of the areas that I believe will be important for us to address and support in 2010. I hope that you will find me to be a good listener, and will bring your ideas, questions, and concerns for discussion. I may not always agree, or be able to accomplish what you ask, but I promise I will listen. In fact, you’ll find I’d much rather listen than talk….part of my Native American heritage, I think. Here’s to a prosperous 2010; where Ponca City is the Place to Be! Highlights We had 27 Ribbon Cuttings in 2009 representing new construction, major remodels and new offices. We also had a groundbreaking for the new YMCA Recreation Facility that will open the end of 2010! This all represents economic investment in Ponca City! We continue to have Business after Hours each month and we are booked through 2011. Many communities no longer have Business after Hours because of lack of interest! We have one of the oldest Leadership Programs in the State. This year we have another outstanding class making a difference in Ponca City. Again many communities across Oklahoma have done away with their leadership programs due to lack of interest! This year we saw more Chamber Member participation than ever before!! Thank you!! It is awesome! Largest Community Wide Holiday Giveaway ever with participation of businesses (78) and with ticket distribution (828,000)! WOW! Remember this is the largest retail event of its kind in Oklahoma and Kansas, and we continue to set new records! We continue to hold steady with our sales tax…….yes we are down around 5%, but much better than some Oklahoma cities our size that are down 14%. We had a record number of members attend our Business Workshops this year. In fact we had to move one of the workshops to Pioneer Technology Center to accommodate everyone wanting to attend! This year we had the best attendance ever for our Ponca Politics Forums! In fact one of our forums was the largest attendance ever! We continue to have our PRIDE Program educating our members about quality customer service. This is a great benefit to our Chamber Members and truly helps our local economy! We are one of only a few Chambers across the state offering this program for their members! We saw growth this year in participation with our Member-to-Member Discount Card and with our Chamber Bucks Program. Both of these efforts are of great value to our Chamber membership! This was another great year for the Business Tip Sheet published in the monthly Chamber Newsletter again benefitting our Chamber Members with ideas on how to manage their business and be more successful! Our Chamber Auction (we only do one fundraiser every other year) was the best ever. In fact it was better than the previous 2 auctions put together. Again, Thank You! Our Tourism Bureau which the Chamber of Commerce operates also had an outstanding 2009! Largest Cherokee Strip Cook-off ever plus the largest Oktoberfest ever! These events have been going on for many years and 2009 was the best EVER! We help promote our events and love to see new records with attendance and participation! Again this year the Herb Festival was recognized as one of Oklahoma’s best events by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism. This year saw the largest reporting period for the hotel/motel tax in 6 years! Largest attendance at the Rodeo since 1995! Grand National Motocross Races held their own in 2009 and had another successful year!! This is Ponca City’s largest event of the year! The Chamber was excited to see donations in Ponca City to organizations like the United Way and others continue to be successful! Thank you!! Pa V og l uem8e 3 2 , I s s u e 1 www.poncacitychamber.com Volume 31, Is Psaugee 57 For 2010 we have a few important goals we want to accomplish! Chamber of Commerce Goals for 2010: Continue to improve our service and value to our Chamber Members as well as providing a great return on your investment to the Chamber! This will be a priority! Continue to work on a strong retail base for Ponca City. Making sure we market Ponca City as a regional shopping center. Always showing why this is so important to our local economy! Also reminding locals to Shop Ponca First and again why this is so important! Help promote the opening of the YMCA Recreation Center. This is going to be huge for our local economy! Continue to partner with Ponca City Development Authority and others on recruiting great companies and people to Ponca City. Making sure that the information we put forth is professional and impressive. Continue to partner with Main Street on the continuation of downtown development with businesses and with improvements that will help attract new business. Continue to partner with the city on important issues facing our city and with proposed improvements in 2010. Continue to partner with our school system as we move forward in providing outstanding education for our kids and making Ponca City education the best in Oklahoma! Continue to promote an event center for Ponca City! Make sure Ponca City remains beautiful with strong code enforcement. This will help in job recruitment and with our tourism industry! Tourism Bureau Goals for 2010: Improve our marketing efforts with our tourism brochure, billboards on I-35, the internet, and in print media. The mission of the Tourism Bureau is to increase traffic to our attractions and our events. This can be accomplished through these marketing outlets. Educate local citizens on the importance of Tourism as an industry for Ponca City! Increase motor coach tours to Ponca City. With the opening of the YMCA Recreation Facility, We want to work on ideas to increase sports traffic to Ponca City. This is going to be a huge tourism jump for all of Ponca City and we feel our downtown region will also benefit with the location of the complex. Remember as a member of our Chamber if you have any suggestions on ways we could help you or your business PLEASE email Rich Cantillon at rich@poncacitychamber.com The Chamber Board of Directors had a board retreat in December to plan the 2010 Year. The turnout was excellent and the ideas were awesome! Expect great things from your Chamber/Tourism in 2010! Page 8 www.poncacitychamber.com Volume 32, Issue 1 VVool luum mee 3312,, IIssssuuee 51 www.poncacitychamber.com PPaaggee 9 Ponca City: Oklahoma’s New Global Village David Myers Ponca City Development Authority One of the most highly quoted books of the first ten years of the 21st century was Tom Friedman’s “The World is Flat.” The book helped millions understand that our planet had entered into a truly new and different phase where people in general and the economy in particular were dependent upon global connections. Friedman’s sequel, “The World is Hot, Flat and Crowded,” makes a case for the beginning of an “energy climate era” or ECE. The ECE, argues Friedman, is potentially more revolutionary than the flattening of the world since it represents a new age that will be driven by energy sources much different than those upon which we now rely. Oil and coal in particular, he notes, have such significant side effects, (global warming, funding our enemies, built in shortages) that the market is now ripe for the true arrival of affordable green energy including wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, biomass, hydrogen and others probably not yet discovered. While the politics of climate change is hotly debated, the market move toward renewable energy is beyond question and the timing for this in Ponca City couldn’t be better. Last year’s fare-thee-well from our former big company patron leaves us without the alternative of going back to sleep and assuming that we can count upon big oil forever. To be sure, refining oil will be required for many years and we’re proud of our role in the industry. But make no mistake, oil no longer plays the role in the Ponca City economy that it once did. Natural gas, perhaps Oklahoma’s most abundant natural resource, is coming on strong and will for many, many decades if not centuries. Natural gas is green energy’s friend, since even if it’s sunny and windy, a back energy supply will continue to be required for the foreseeable future. Natural gas is also Ponca City’s friend as the industry is supported by many of Ponca City’s fifty plus manufacturing companies. We sit at the eastern edge of one of the most productive wind corridors in North America. We have considerably more sunlight hours, on average, than Germany, currently the largest producer of solar power in the world. In case you haven’t noticed, there is a huge lake just nine miles east of here that is already producing hydroelectric power and could produce more. Some fifty homes in the area use geothermal power right now and cellulosic fuels are a natural fit for Ponca City given our energy and agricultural know how. No one, period, is better suited for biomass energy than we are. We have an industrial base that understands energy production and can work with the extremely tight tolerances and precision required by these emerging technologies. Ponca City truly is a global village with the most technologically advanced infrastructure of any city in America. We are 100% wireless, enjoy abundant connectivity, can do other cool things like read meters remotely, we have the finest technical training programs in the nation and a population that understands the rest of the world because so many have spent time living abroad. That population also includes the best energy related manpower in the world, many of whom took a pass at the chance to move to Houston or elsewhere last year in order to stay in Ponca City. There are people living and working in this community today doing highly advanced things that you don’t know about. The new federal subcontracting initiative is based in Ponca City and will bring in even more high tech projects and we may have the opportunity to market some of the finest lab space in the world today. If last year’s economic upsets taught us anything, it should have taught us that we are in control of our economic future, not someone else. We discovered that not only could we survive the loss of two big companies…we did. Quietly but with determination, over the last five years we have been building an economy outside of the oil industry and the results are in. In spite of 2009’s big hits, we continue to have a lower unemployment rate than the national average. Our retail sales, while lower than a year before, are holding their own and, unlike other cities in our region, layoffs and furloughs of public employees have thus far been avoided. More to the point, we have the tools and the motivation to move into the ECE in a leadership position. No longer the victim, Ponca City can be the victor. We’re still standing and we have the ball with a clear field to the goal line. So welcome to this new decade. Get ready for more changes in almost every aspect of your life and in the life of Ponca City. There is simply no reason to look back anymore when the path forward is so clear. Page 10 www.poncacitychamber.com Volume 32, Issue 1 Ponca City Tourism is Ready for 2010! By Tourism Coordinator Kristi Brown Whew! They say time flies when you’re having fun, and I am a prime example. It’s been almost four months since I was hired to be Ponca City’s Tourism Coordinator, and I can truly say I LOVE my job! Recently, I was discussing my new position with a Chamber Board Member. His statement ―when your job doesn’t feel like work, you’ve got a great job!‖ accurately describes how I feel every day. Thank you for this opportunity and I’m doing my best to do a good job for Ponca City! Hardy Watkins, the Executive Director of Oklahoma’s Tourism and Recreation Department, spoke recently at the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Alumni Luncheon. If you were fortunate to have attended the luncheon, you heard a great speaker! If not, Hardy spoke on tourism and its effect on economic development within our city and state. The newest figure shows that Oklahoma had a 6.2 BILLION dollar tourism industry last year, up from 5.5 billion the year before! That is a new record! Listening to Hardy speak was very motivating. I realized not only are the goals we’ve set for Ponca City Tourism attainable, but with hard work we can exceed our own expectations. I’d like to give a ―shout-out‖ to Jennifer Kalkman and her staff with Oklahoma Tourism. Ponca City Tourism hosted a training session for area attractions and event organizers on Thursday, December 17. The training was held in the training room at Standing Bear Museum and Education Center (Thank you T.L and staff!). Jennifer’s team, which came from Oklahoma City, gave an intensive informational training on the new travelok.com website. About 25 people attended, including reps from most major attractions and events. It was a great turnout and we all gained a lot of useful information. Ponca City is fortunate to participate in the Oklahoma Tourism fulfillment program. In November, 122 Ponca City brochures were mailed to people in 31 different states. The most popular states were Oklahoma and Texas, ranked #1 and #2, and California was ranked #3. 23% of the orders came from within the state of Oklahoma. The average partner receives 33% of orders in-state, so we are above average on out-of-state requests. In addition to us other Ponca City attractions participating in the fulfillment program include The Marland Mansion, Conoco Museum, and Kaw Lake. If you are an attraction please call me if you’d like more information on participating with your brochure! We hosted an overnight tour group from Salina, Kansas in December. They attended the Michael Londra concert, and also enjoyed a private NOC Roustabout concert, tours through our attractions, great dining and another tour through the Festival of Angels Lighting Display. We also had a bank travel group of 34 from Okmulgee and Claremore and a group from Enid public schools. We appreciate all the hospitality that our attraction people and Ponca City shows to these groups. Our trade show season starts this month. This month it begins with the McAllen Texas show on January 8-9. Then we have the Kansas City Travel Show January 23-24, the Ft. Worth Show January 29-31. I’ll be attending these events, except for the one in McAllen, which will be worked by our wonderful volunteers Chuck and Jane Rager. I’m really looking forward to spreading the word about how wonderful Ponca City is, and looking forward to having a great 2010! Happy New Year!!
