IAESTE: An international
work experience program
The International Association for the Exchange
of Students for Technical Experience
Established in 1948, the International Association for the Exchange of
Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is a worldwide organisation
with over 80 member countries. It offers international traineeships for
students studying degrees in science, engineering and related disciplines.
IAESTE is the largest organisation of its kind in the world and aims to
promote international understanding and goodwill amongst students,
academic institutions, employers and the wider community.
IAESTE can help you find the right student for short or long term
traineeships within your organisation. It is a reciprocal exchange, so for every
overseas student placed in Australia we are able to send an Australianbased student into the international workplace.
We have been involved with the IAESTE program now for over five years. The
students that have come to our laboratories have been enthusiastic, capable,
and well liked by the staff. The variety of cultural backgrounds has enriched our
workplace and I highly recommend the program to other employers.

So you’re interested in employing an IAESTE trainee? That’s great! But you have
more questions? Let us outline a few more of the details of employing an
IAESTE trainee.
Skills?
•
The employer can specify any required skills, knowledge or software, and
IAESTE will find the most suitable candidate for the position.
Experience?
•
All IAESTE candidates are required to have completed at least their second year
of studies when applying. However, the employer can further specify required
experience, eg. third year or graduate etc.
Length?
•
IAESTE traineeships can vary in length from 6 weeks to 12 months. In the past
however, we have found that generally applicants prefer to spend at least 6
months in Australia, and so longer traineeships will attract a greater number
of applicants. Most previous employers have typically offered 6-12 month
positions, and this also allows the trainee to make a larger contribution to the
employer once settled in to a role.
Visas?
•
IAESTE Australia has the ability to issue visas for traineeships, and the cost for
this service is paid by the trainee.
Accomodation?
•
IAESTE Australia will assist the trainee with finding accomodation. Often we try
to place multiple trainees together, especially for those working at the same
employer.
Pay?
•
All IAESTE traineeships worldwide are paid, with the trainee’s salary sufficient
to cover their living costs. In Australia, the minimum is $350 per week. However
we encourage employers to pay $400-450 per week to better enable trainees
to experience all Australia has to offer!
How can my organisation participate in IAESTE?
