The combination of a strong technical background and
customer-focused roles seems to serve me well. This is
my first role working with the emergency services and I'm
already enjoying the technical challenges. And it's a
genuine pleasure to support the services we all rely on.
Our team is here to provide you with the support to get
the right vehicles you need to do your jobs. We're
confident we have cars, vans and pick-ups that are
engineered to cope with the day-to-day punishment of
police, ambulance and fire service duty over long periods.
And we work with the best converters to offer you the
latest technology at an affordable price.
For this issue we've spoken with Mike Dring of
Humberside Police about a trial of lighting-quick Ducati
pursuit bikes. We also ‘interviewed’ Billy the Fire Dog and
his trainer Duncan Carmichael about their custom-built
ãKODA Yeti.
One of our most exciting new models is the new SEAT
Leon, named ‘2013 Car of The Year’ by Auto Express
magazine: we've provided an in-depth look. And with
winter upon us, we focus on the wide range of four-wheel
drive vehicles from our Group's sizeable stable, from
Audi's allroad quattro to the Transporter 4MOTION®.

We knew it was good...
...but it's nice to hear someone else say it
W
e knew the third generation SEAT Leon was something special. But it was nice to have independent recognition of
the car's class from the Auto Express New Car Awards, where it was named Car of the Year (one of 13 awards it has
received so far). Completely redesigned from the chassis upwards, this is a car that was always set to impress.
The magazine is the biggest-selling weekly motoring title in the UK, with 50,000+ copies sold each week and around
one million monthly website users, so the awards carry a lot of weight. It's the second year that Volkswagen Group has
collected the Car of the Year honour: the ãKODA Citigo won in 2012.
Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler said: "The new Leon is a brilliant all-rounder offering space, quality, economy
and plenty of style. Youíve only got to look at the cars the Leon beat to see just how good it is."

Auto Express said...
"
After years of watching its Volkswagen and ãKODA sister brands
hog the prizes, SEAT has landed the biggest of them all.
"The Auto Express Car of the Year has to be a class leader in its own right,
so any model capable of putting the combined might of BMW's
1 Series, ãKODA's Octavia and VW's Golf in the shade was always
going to be in with a good shout when it came to the big one.
"We knew the SEAT would look the part, but we weren't prepared for the
depth of its talents – it combines all the best bits of its rivals.
"Desirable looks? Check. Practical interior? Check. Low running costs? Of
course. Fun? Oh yes. That's right: the new Leon has kept its key
selling point as the most stylish car in the class, while improving elsewhere.
Full LED headlights, tail lights and daytime running
lights illuminate the road ahead, improve visibility
and are maintenance-free
The seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox (DSG) pictured below can be combined with
steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles, so driversí hands stay firmly on the wheel
"There's a sporty three-door
version for the first time (an ST
estate will follow later this
year) and the same strong
engine line-up as the VW Golf.
In fact, the VW Group has
secured a lock-out, with its
three mainstream brands
fighting for victory. The Golf is
the all-rounder and the ãKODA
Octavia is the sensible bet, so
what does the SEAT have that's
missing from its rivals? With
head-turning looks and
engaging handling, plus hitech touches, it gives up little
to its rivals in the way of
prestige or practicality.
"So why wouldn't you choose
the SEAT? It does everything
the competition can, but with
added fun and style."

FIREFIGHTER WHO LOVES GETTING HIS
COLLAR FELT...
H
is day job has taken him to gigs at
Glasgow's Hampden Park, as a security
sniffer dog for the likes of Sir Paul McCartney,
Bruce Springsteen and U2.
He even worked with the previous Pope
during his visit to Scotland in 2010.
But as his name suggests, Billy the Fire Dog's
heart is set on serving his community in a
higher-stakes arena: fire investigation (FI).
Springer spaniel Billy (pictured with new
recruit Oscar and trainer Duncan Carmichael)
has the ability to sniff out accelerants used by
arsonists even days after a fire has burned
out, on a piece of clothing.
"People can't believe it when they find out
what he can do," said Duncan. "Having a dog
on the scene can speed up the operation and
reduce arson because perpetrators realise
they have more chance of being caught."
As many as 19 English fire and rescue
services use FI dogs, but there's just one parttimer in Scotland.
Former firefighter Duncan, 49, who served in
Lockerbie between 1991 and 2000, took Billy
on a visit to the Scottish Parliament at
Holyrood House, Edinburgh, last year.
South of Scotland Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) Joan McAlpine
has been supporting his bid to become an FI dog since the country's fire
services amalgamated earlier this year.
"Billy is a remarkable dog and when working with Duncan he displays
skills which could be of huge use in the fight against fires," said
McAlpine "The reorganisation of the fire service in Scotland offers
opportunities for new ways of doing things.
"Of course," she continued, "the decision about employing Billy is one
for those leading the new service to make, but I'm keen that he and
Duncan should come to the parliament to meet MSPs and tell them
about the service they provide."
Duncan is optimistic that Billy's services will be considered for the new
national fire service. "No one can argue that this would not work as it
has been a massive success in England," he said.

...and he doesn't mind being in this doghouse
ãKODA Yeti is the perfect kennel on wheels for this clever canine's firefighting quest
orking with converters Engineering Vehicle Options (EVO) and a host of suppliers, Volkswagen Group's Specialist
W
Sales team helped ãKODA create a specially adapted Yeti, for Duncan's company K9 Response, an independent
fire dog detection service.
As well as attending the aftermath of suspicious blazes, Duncan and Billy use the specially modified car to visit schools,
open days and events to promote fire safety.
Yen for Yeti?
This was the first conversion of this dog-friendly design, so EVO had to start from scratch: we
hope you'll agree that the end result  a compact yet spacious, twin-cell dog van  shows
just how versatile the Yeti is for such a small vehicle.

Duncan and Billy have already taken the Yeti out on

through the rear nearside door.

"The most obvious benefit of running the Yeti
GreenLine is reduction in our carbon footprint and
economical running cost," said Duncan. "I also find
that the 105PS is more than enough for normal
everyday driving."
For operational use, Duncan rates the quality of the
EVO conversion: with dedicated lockers and
drawers and kennels with air conditioning it
provides a comfortable berth for Billy, Oscar and all
of their equipment.
"We have the option to remove one of the
cages, which gives us more space and allows us to
use it as a portable kennel," said Duncan.

Winter Warriors
You've heard of the Yeti, Tiguan and Touar
But what about the four-wheel versions of
W
hether it’s the challenges of winter
weather, the ability to mount high
kerbs in urban pursuits, or off-road activity in
rural areas, these all-wheel drive vehicles are
tougher than most and simple to service.
Volkswagen Passat Alltrack
With raised ride height, 4MOTION® four-wheel
drive and beefed-up body kit, the Alltrack has all
you need to venture off the beaten track in
urban or rural settings.
Based on the popular and versatile Passat
Estate, with body enhancements for protection
from rough terrain, it has the practicality of an
estate car and much of the versatility of a
conventional SUV. There are two drivetrains: a
2.0-litre TDI 140 PS, six-speed manual and a 2.0litre TDI 170 PS six-speed DSG auto.
Towing capacity of 2,000 kg (braked, 12 per cent
incline) is 200 kg more than an equivalent
Passat Estate.
Audi A4 allroad quattro®
The effectiveness of Audi’s quattro® all-wheel drive system is beyond doubt: five million units have
been sold since the technology took the motoring world by storm in 1980.
The Audi A4 allroad quattro® is larger than the A4 Avant
on which it is based, with 37mm more ground clearance
(180 mm). Practical features include stainless-steel underbody protection and a luggage compartment with between 490 and 1,430 litres capacity and a load length of
1.78 metres with seats folded down. The tailgate opens to
almost 2m in height, so loading is easy.
The allroad’s new ESP (electronic stability programme)
enables high-speed driving on-road and has a special offroad mode. This reprograms the ESP, traction control and
ABS to adapt to off-road driving conditions, such as snow.

Volkswagen Transporter 4MOTION®
This versatile van comes in two wheelbase lengths, as a
panel van, a people carrier or a kombi with a second row of
seats and a large load area.
It uses Volkswagen’s tried and tested 4MOTION® system,
which delivers permanent, yet variable all-wheel-drive to
help maintain optimum grip. If one wheel loses traction,
4MOTION® reacts in milliseconds to send more power to
the wheels that have the most grip.
The Haldex clutch at the heart of the system automatically
gathers information on the driver's actions, engine
performance, transmission and brakes, so it can control
the transfer of torque. This lets it deal swiftly with all
potentially dangerous or difficult driving conditions.
The Haldex clutch is at the heart of Volkswagen's
4MOTION® four-wheel drive system.
Simple service: both the quattro® and 4MOTION® systems
contain sealed components, so no additional servicing is
required over two-wheel drive vehicles other than an oil
change, depending on the transmission chosen.

They might think twice
W
ould-be law-breakers on two wheels may think twice
about taking on our guardians of road safety when
they see the Ducati badge. Or so the thinking goes at the
Silverstone headquarters of this high-performance Italian
marque, which was purchased by the Volkswagen Group
back in April 2012.
"Our bikes are sought after for their stunning looks, razorsharp handling and high performance," says Managing
Director Tim Maccabee. "But we've yet to make Ducatis
widely available to the emergency services, which, if you'll
excuse the pun, is a bit of a crime."
Ducati's high-speed performance has been developed
through years of success in international motorsport, but
this manufacturer offers more than just pursuit vehicles,
says Maccabee. "We have our strongest-ever line up of bikes.
The Multistrada tourer, in particular, has been getting a lot
of interest from the police riders we work with."
Ducati's close working relationship with police motorcyclists
has grown through the BikeSafe events the company
supports to promote safer riding on Britain's roads. The
BikeSafe team has had a Multistrada 1200 on loan. At the
other end of the speed spectrum, Humberside Police has
been trialling two Ducatis (see right).
Ducati Diavel Carbon: conspicuously powerful
"We understand the high demands police
motorcyclists place on their bikes," says Tim
Maccabee. "I'm confident Ducati motorcycles
will provide excellent reliability, performance
and usability in the line of duty."
"We are not in any of the frameworks yet," he
adds, "at this stage we want to gauge
interest from local authorities, so please
contact us with your comments."

T
raffic Inspector Mike Dring of Humberside Police is
the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO)
Deputy Lead for Motorcycle Safety and has many years'
experience of two-wheeled traffic policing. Mike is
passionate about motorcycle safety and takes every
opportunity to spread a safety message to the public:
you may have seen him in the BBC's Traffic Cops
documentary series, dressed as Spike the hedgehog, to
encourage school children to stay safe on the roads.
Mike's traffic team has been trialling a Ducati 1199
Panigale and a Diavel and has found them powerful
deterrents, even when they're off the road.
"In Humberside, we have seen that one motorcycle can
make an impact on rider behaviour even when not
actually on duty. The mindset of many riders changes
when they are aware it can potentially pop up behind
them. Our Ducati 1199 Panigale has been the centre of
attention at every event I have attended throughout
the year" says Mike.
"It has been the best engagement tool I have used with
the motorcycle community so far. Riders who would
not normally engage with us have spoken about the
motorcycle and its use as a police bike and as a result
many have signed up for BikeSafe."
But the Panigale and Diavel aren't just for show: their
aggressive presence can make a real difference.
"I have used the bikes operationally and they have a
huge deterrent factor. Comments such as ‘it's game
over’, ‘we can't outrun that’ and ‘it's not even worth
trying’ demonstrate how bikes like these can have an
impact just by their sheer presence."

Converters Corner
The latest kit from our Volkswagen Group Approved Converters
W
e have two approved vehicle converters at our disposal: EVO Ltd and Colman Milne.
This relationship enables us to provide you with custom-made vehicles to your precise
specification, but with one invoice and one sales process. Over the next few Emergency Services
newsletters, we will showcase the latest innovations available for your fleets. In this
quarter's edition, we're looking at innovative, lightweight racking solutions from EVO Ltd.
On some operations, you need to take enough
equipment for a wide range of outcomes – and
be ready to hit the road with it in minutes.
When this level of response is required, storage
is crucial, which is why EVO is fitting more and
more of its Infinity aluminium alloy racking and
stowage units.
Each vehicle converted so far has been slightly
different: Infinity's modular system can create a
mobile car workshop, a first-aid station, or an
incident support vehicle for traffic or urban use.
This equipment has two key strengths. It is
made from strong and lightweight aluminium
alloy, so there is more payload for your kit.
And all storage space is structured: well thought
-out enough to ensure your tools and supplies
stay where you put them, intact.
In the vehicle pictured, you can see a sizeable
racking unit along the van's offside panel as
you might expect.
But there's also a neat storage unit running
across the bulkhead: it's positioned over the
front axle and accessible from the sliding side
door, ideally situated for storing heavy
equipment needed at short notice.
The partnership between Volkswagen Group's
Emergency Services team and EVO enables us to
deliver a vehicle that meets your needs quickly,
with minimum fuss and at best value.
Above rear offside storage unit includes 12V torch charging unit,
sockets and powerful LED lighting. Left nearside workbench with
vice and storage drawers. Below the offside unit has room for
much larger items, with strapping to hold them down

Get the Knowledge
Take advantage of technical training for Blue Light specialists
V
olkswagen Group delivers the highest levels of technical training to support the maintenance
and repair of its vehicle ranges. We work closely with all our Emergency Services partners to
create tailored training to meet the high demands for technical expertise and fast turnaround
placed on Blue Light workshops. Our training will meet your organisation's operational needs, so
that our vehicles can deliver the performance your drivers demand every day.
We have experience of training technicians for authorities in the
Emergency Services, large public sector organisations and corporate
car and van fleets: we understand that each operation has different
requirements, which is why we recommend bespoke training, based
on your organisation's specific needs. We can also provide access to
generic Volkswagen Group technical training courses , if these suit
your needs.
Training needs assessments focuses on results
One of our three technical training team managers will work with
your authority to understand your technicians' knowledge and skill
levels and the performance needs of your workshop, based on the
levels of service work, tools and systems that are in place. We will
then develop a training programme that delivers the results
required by your authority.
On-site training means minimum down-time for technicians
We understand that your technicians need to be productive for as much time as possible, so that your vehicles are off
the road for as little time as possible. So we aim to deliver our training at your premises wherever this is practical, based
on the availability of tools, equipment, environment and systems.
We recommend the use of your own authority's vehicles for the training, to best reflect what your technicians will see
in their own workshops (although this is not essential). We also recommend a ratio of one vehicle to every three
technicians being trained.
Visit Volkswagen Group's National Learning Centre
We can offer spaces on generic technical training courses, normally offered to dealer staff, at our National Learning
Centre (NLC) in Milton Keynes. The NLC (pictured, below) is a custom-built facility for technical training, which hosts
thousands of technicians on hundreds of courses every year. It represents the Volkswagen Group's technical excellence
and the high levels of customer service we aspire to. Our technicians find it an inspiring place to visit.
Who has used this training?
We have supported the following police forces around the UK. The people listed below are happy for you to contact
them to find out more about their experience of our technical training:
