Random Thoughts From Your COVVC Historian By Marilyn Allen JUNE 18TH IS TAKE YOUR VOLKSWAGEN TO WORK DAY I am looking forward to the annual Take your VW to work day. It will be fun to see how many vw's are driven on that day. It may be a picture opportunity. I was very surprised to have missed last month's meeting. It certainly was not in my plans. Thanks to all who have sent good wishes. I am feeling much better. We had hoped to have Charlie Cox speak at this month's meeting. As you may know, Charlie Cox has retired after working for volkwagen for over 40 years. He is also a collector of all things volkswagen. Since his retirement last year, he has spent part of the year in Arizona and is there now. He does plan to be at our show this year and I hope he will be able to attend one of our fall meetings. continued on page two c photo by Mike Roecker Featured In This Issue... 655B Providence Columbus, OH 43214 1 - Thoughts From Your Board Member by Marilyn Allen 3 - March Meeting Minutes by Tina Gibson 4 - Life in The Past Lane by Marilyn Allen 4 - Dougstock 2010 by Bill Lewandowski 5 - Show Volunteers by Marilyn Allen 5 - Let’s Talk Toys by Michael Williams 6 Tech Tips by Bruce Amacker 7 - COVVC North Rolls by Mike Roecker 8 - Cruise In Report by Tina Gibson 8/9 - Period Beetle Road Test by Chuck Simpson 10 - Classified Ads Next Monthly Meeting June 10th, 2010 7:30 Sharp! 11 - Club and factory Information The COVVC North chapter had its first gathering on May 1st. I do not think we have ever brought a vw book to a meeting. I know I have several books I could share. We will have time to share our books and won't that be a picture opportunity to have everyone in a vw shirt . The shirt can either be a show shirt or any other vw shirt. Most everyone will have a choice to make. In addition to the vw shirt, please remember to wear your name badge. In looking through an old year book, I found some questions about vw's from 1960's that Brenda had found in her Dad's books. It will be interesting to see who can remember "reading" about the vw's of the 60's. The black volunteer sign up book will be at the June meeting. I’m shifting gears this month and sharing one of my VW toy buses with each of you. This bus actually made its first debut in an official 1958 Volkswagen truck sales brochure before becoming a tin toy. In the brochure, Volkswagen advertises the bus as being “The mobile billboard! Smart businessmen have worked out that billboard space equal in size to the advertising area on the Panel Delivery costs more during one year than the entire Panel Delivery. If you plan to use your own distinctive color treatment, order your Panel prime coated.” Volkswagen goes on to show the prospective buyer four panel deliveries painted with sample designs. The example pictured is known among collectors as the “PARKWAY DISTRIBUTORS” tin bus; and was manufactured by the Bandai Toy Company of Japan during the late 1950s into the early 1960s. This friction operated tin bus is 7.75 inches long and is based on a late 1950’s panel delivery. The license plate on the toy reads BC-371 which stands for the Bandai Company model #371. I’ve always thought it would be SO cool to actually paint a life size panel delivery in this design. Maybe some day… This toy is very rare. In 25 years of collecting, I’ve never seen another example come up for sale or laid eyes on the actual box this toy came in. I have also never seen this toy in any other toy collection. The value of the toy in good condition is around $400 - $500, with a mint example with no box being appraised in The Big Book of Tin Toy Cars at around $1,200. If a mint boxed example of this toy existed, just imagine what it would be worth - $$$$ Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !! Part two of the May, 1961 Mechanix Illustrated magazine Beetle review. SHOWTIME IS VOLUNTEER TIME by Marilyn Allen The volunteer book will be available at the June meeting. We hope everyone can volunteer for a two hour shift. If we each volunteer for 2 hours, everyone will also be able to enjoy the show. Linda and I really appreciate your willingness to volunteer. See the book at the June meeting. 5 Following is article number two, by new COVVC North member Bruce Amacker. Armed with a wealth of expertise, Bruce will cover many of the basic functions of the automobile. So sit back and get your learning cap on! Thanks Bruce! OIL ANALYSIS by Bruce Amacker A commonly overlooked diagnostic method in the automotive world is oil analysis. In the heavy duty truck world, it is common for fleets to take an oil sample and have it laboratory analyzed at every preventative maintenance interval. This allows a projection of engine wear and major engine repairs can be planned before catastrophic failure occurs. This could be compared to a blood test at the doctor’s with your annual physical- checking to make sure all of the “stuff” we don’t understand is all within regular limits. I like to do an oil analysis at annual intervals on my classic cars, or whenever a situation arises where I need more information to make my decision. A case in point is one of my other classic cars which has a cold engine knock which only occurs a few times a year. This could be carbon buildup on top of a piston coming in contact with the cylinder head- or worse, like an impending bearing failure. In doing an oil sample I have found the level of lead in the oil was 56PPM, indicating somewhat elevated bearing wear. Is this approaching the danger level? Certainly not, but is reason to keep an eye on things in the future. In addition to lead, other items reported in the spectrograph are levels of iron, chromium, 6 copper, tin, aluminum, nickel, silver, silicon, boron, sodium, magnesium, calcium, barium, phosphorus, zinc, molybdenum, titanium, vanadium, potassium, fuel, viscosity at 40C, viscosity at 100C, water%, soot/solids, and coolant. Whew! I don’t really know what half of these things mean, how am I going to know if they’re elevated and the meaning of that? No worry, the analysis paper that is returned to you not only flags abnormal and critical levels, but also gives a direction to go on why that particular level is high. They will also graph out the levels over several oil samples so that trends can be identified. In addition, there is an 800 phone number that connects you to a tech who knows what they are talking about- a rare thing in today’s world of offshore support. A while back I had a customer bring in a car for a PPI (PrePurchase Inspection). Along with the normal chassis and computer checks we did an oil analysis, which showed elevated silicon with a note to check the air cleaner for leakage. To my amazement we found a cracked crankcase ventilation tube allowing dirty air to enter the engine, possibly causing increased engine wear. It was surprising to me that the oil analysis picked up on this small failure! Submitting an oil sample is done by USPS with the results returned by fax or USPS in 7-14 days. Napa/Wix #4077 is about $14 retail and the mailing is about $3, a small price to pay for the wealth of information returned. If you’re in a big hurry, some Caterpillar engine facilities have the equipment on-site to give you a report in hours. Have fun, good luck, and keep driving those classic VW’s! R COVVC North olls by Mike Roecker The plan was developed by one of our longer term COVVC members and co-founder of COVVC North, Dan Garland. He thought that a 20 mile jaunt through Cleveland's Emerald Necklace with the promise of locally brewed beer on the other end was a proper beginning for our little satellite group in Northeastern Ohio. (Note deletion here) Back on a cold March day Dan and I took a trial cruise in his well preserved 1999 Audi A4. Hey, at least we kept it in the family! (VW, Audi, Porsche right?). Dan has 4 wheel drive because you never know what weather your going to get in Cleveland in March, but thankfully the park roads were clear. We almost could have cruised in our Bugs if they weren't still in hibernation. It seems that our local VW enthusiasts were itching to get their vintage (and not so vintage) German rides on the road because despite the threat of rain in the forecast we had a fantastic turnout of 18 cars...and kombis! The LEAKOIL (Lake Erie Association of Kombi Owners Involvement League) showed up in force and we were delighted to welcome them into our club. We spent about an hour just saying hello, signing everyone in and happily taking cruise/membership fees. We added 12 new COVVC members through participation in this event (great idea from Brenda to bundle the cruise and membership fee!). Well Dan got us rolling, leading the pack in his lovely 63 Beetle. I pulled up the rear with my 66 Bug, Murray, and I must give a shout out to our COVVC North technical guru Bruce Amacker who was instrumental in helping me get Murray on the road for the cruise. The cruise went off without a hitch and we all arrived safe and sound in Berea about an hour later just in time to open the Cornerstone Brewery. Well almost without a hitch. Sean Gallagher had his drive pulley separate (ever hear of this happening?) and new mem- ber Aaron Badertscher and other cruisers worked to help get Sean back on the road. I think we have some technical horsepower up here in the northern part of the state! And at the end of the day that is what our club, COVVC, is all about. Putting VW enthusiasts together who enjoy their cars and don't mind rolling up their sleeves to keep their vintage cars and buses on the road. Thanks to everyone for their participation in what will surely be an annual event for COVVC North. 7
