What is a Resource Family? A Resource Family is one in which a child (children) would come to your home to visit for either a weekend or an occasional week away from Big Oak Ranch. The time commitment here would be anywhere from 2-12 times per year. If you and your family are interested in ministering to our children, often times becoming a Resource Family to one child (children) is a great way to get involved. Many of our regular resource families come to know and love the child they are sponsoring and become an extended family to them, such as an Aunt or Uncle would be. Omar Harris came by to visit. Omar came to live with us when he was 14 years old and graduated in 2002. He is now in the Air Force as a staff sergeant. He visited with us for about an hour on his way home to Tampa, FL where he is stationed. Pictured left to right: Mr. Noel, Omar, John Jenkins, Melissa Robinson and Donna Duke. Please contact Lynn Hazard at (205) 467-6226, ext. 1215 at the Girls Ranch or Donna Duke at (256) 892-0773 at the Boys Ranch if you would like more information on becoming a Resource Family. H aving been here for nearly forty years, I have accumulated a file drawer full of letters from current and former residents. Some days I sit and read through them as a reminder of why we started Big Oak Ranch. They have literally changed my life and further validate what the Lord laid on my heart long ago. So many of these letters, cards and notes have simply said thanks to the Ranch staff for just being there for each child. I have noticed that not one of them comment on the physical plant or buildings. These are necessities that we have to have to raise our children, but what we give our children goes far beyond that. The love and support that our houseparents and staff give to our children are what these notes reflect each and every time. One young 11 year old girl recently wrote a card and in her childlike writing she said, “Thanks for all y’all do to take care of us.” Just think the word “y’all” includes you, too. You are a very large part of the changes we see everyday. We could not do what we do without you and your support for our children. YOU are being used by GOD to literally transform these young lives. There would be NO Big Oak Ranch without the Lord moving in your heart and spirit to support us. I sure hope you enjoy the fruit of your labor as you look through these pages. Children’s lives are literally being changed because of YOU. Thank you for being a useable tool in GOD’S toolbox. Thank you for loving our children! P.O. Box 507 Springville, AL 35146 If you are the parent of a teenager, you are coming down to what John calls the two-minute drill. In football the last two minutes are crucial; the whole game builds to those moments that can determine the final outcome. The Two-Minute Drill to Manhood is John's game plan that will help moms and dads make sure their sons are ready for authentic manhood. Based on John's life and experience parenting more than 1,800 children at Big Oak Ranch, as well as parenting his two biological children, he drills down into seven actionable life principles drawn from the word “MANHOOD” itself: M – Master A – Ask and Listen N – Never Compromise H – Handle Responsibility O – One Purpose O – One Body D – Don’t Ever, Ever, Ever Give Up SCHEDULED BOOK SIGNINGS: May 11 • Books-A-Million, Gadsden, AL (3:00 p.m.) May 18 • LifeWay Christian Store, Tuscaloosa, AL (1:00 p.m.) May 25 • Books-A-Million, Brookwood Village, Birmingham, AL (6:00 p.m.) June 1 • Books-A-Million, Trussville, AL (2:00 p.m.) As you can see from the pictures, our children went in all different directions for Spring Break - some went the the mountains, some went to the beach but all of them had an incredible time with their Ranch families. Thank you for making this possible! 9 Thanks SO much to Stace Beechum and Abbie Ashley from Gold’s Gym for making the 5K Race SO successful this year! Thanks also to the many participants and sponsors, including McClellan Family Chiropractic, Advocare, Oral Surgery Associates, Regional Biomedical Laboratory, Etowah County Chamber of Commerce, Performance Chiropractic and Doctors Med Care. Special thanks to Rob Huff for donating the t-shirts for the day. As you can see from the pictures, everyone had a wonderful time – many of our children, houseparents and staff participated in the Race and Fun Run! Thanks SO much Gold’s Gym for an incredible event!! Stace Beechum and Abbie Ashley from Gold’s Gym and Mr. John 10 Big 12 Club It takes roughly $12,000 a year to raise a child at Big Oak Ranch. That’s $1000 a month to provide the basics of food, clothing, housing and education. The Big 12 Club is a special group of donors who commit to $12,000 a year to ensure that our children have the essentials they need. But more than the essentials of food and shelter – the Big 12 Club makes possible the impossible; they make the unimaginable real. Like other families, we continue to support our children after they move on to college or other continuing education. The Big 12 Club ensures that we have the resources to cover housing and health care, books and fees, and all of the other costs that come with completing a child’s education. Join us, and you make the dreams of children like Melissa reality! Melissa is currently taking classes at Wallace State Community College. She is transferring to Troy University this fall, and majoring in Early Childhood Education. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and very courageous; do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 This verse reminds me of God’s faithfulness. No matter where I am, He will be there with me; I do not have to be afraid of anything because everything happens for a reason, and it is all in Gods’ plan. I came to the ranch 7 ½ years ago when I was 13. Now I am 20, going to college, very involved in my church, and working as a team leader at the Cookie Company. It has been a challenge to get to this point in my life, but I would not trade it for anything. I know that God has blessed me with a chance to make a difference in this world, and He has given me a family who cares, loves, and supports me in all I do. One day I hope to be an international missionary and share with other children a chance for a new life. I have been on two foreign mission trips to Honduras for VBS activities with children in orphanages and to Romania for a Bible/sports camp; we also went to Germany and Austria on that second trip. I have also gone on domestic mission trips to Florida, Georgia, New York, and within Alabama. If Mr. John, Darin and Lisa Moseley, and all of you who have given to support the Ranch had not been here to help me, I would not be who I am today. Thank you all for giving me a chance! - - Melissa 11 The following people have made contributions to Big Oak Ranch in Memory or in Honor of family members, friends, & loved ones.
