Alexander Palm
white
These solitary palms have tall slender trunks that can reach up to 20
metres. The large leaves (fronds) stretch 4 metres outward from the
crown, forming a circular arrangement. There are dark green above and
silvery beneath. Hundreds of small creamy white flowers branched in
clusters hang from the crown like a large chandelier. These are soon
followed by red, egg shaped fruit which are enjoyed by a range of fruit
eating birds including fig birds, bower birds, and native pigeons. The
Alexander Palm occurs throughout coastal Queensland and is tolerant of
floods and cyclones.
