Your Gift Can Change the Future for Girls Like Jamie
amie is a teenage girl who lived in Florence Crittenton’s
Residential Group Home. She came to us when she was
13 years old. She had been diagnosed with a learning disability, as well as a variety of mental illnesses. These included
post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, attention deficit
and hyperactivity.
the tragedies and the disabilities to the possibilities. We provide
hope and encouragement where there was none before.
When she arrived she was extremely sad and confused,
angry and frightened, hurt and very mistrustful. She had no
self-esteem. With all the challenges Jamie had to face,
some might have said that her life was not salvageable.
It takes the work of the community to help our children.
It takes the support of the community to fund the programs
that give hope to these young girls.
Tragically, family members sexually abused Jamie, beginning when she was as young as 5 years old. At the age of 8,
she was removed from her home and spent the next 4
years in and out of various foster homes and group
homes. Her life before Florence Crittenton was dreadful.

Look for these reminders to get involved!
What Jamie needed was someone who believed in her
and a chance to succeed – something we all need and
deserve. At Florence Crittenton, there is always hope
for a child, no matter what her life was like. We see beyond
Jamie stayed with us for a year, during which she received
counseling, made friends and learned how to build trusting
relationships with safe adults enabling her to blossom and
grow into a healthy, happy young girl.

For the Special People on Your List...
FROM THE EXECUTIVE
or most of us, the holidays are a very special
time of year filled with love, laughter, and best of
all, family. For some though, the holidays are a
difficult and trying time, as is the case with many of
the girls living with us, especially since most of them
lack family support. That is why we feel it is so important
that we do all we can to provide the sense of family
that each of them both needs and deserves, but we
can’t do it without you.
Everything we achieve at Florence Crittenton
is due to the generosity of the community.
Volunteers, donors, friends and civic leaders all play
a role in our ability to provide safety, hope and opportunity to Arizona’s at-risk girls. We have truly been
blessed over the years to have so many people from the
community who care deeply about our mission. I am
very grateful for your past generosity and ask that you
continue giving during this holiday season.
There are many ways that you can make a difference
in our kids’ lives. We host a Holiday Drive that runs
through the entire month of December. Gifts collected
during the drive are handed out to girls living in our
Residential Group Home, the Scottsdale Girls Ranch
Home and our Transitional Living Homes. The drive is
2

designed to bring joy and gifts to our girls, many of whom
have literally been forgotten by their own families. For
them, the thought that someone would care enough to
give a gift or write a note to them reminds them that
they are remembered and they do matter.
We are also in need of volunteers during the
holidays to do things such as sort and wrap the gifts
that come in during the Holiday Drive, decorate the
campus and cottages, or host crafting projects with the
girls. No matter what capacity you choose to
give, you will be making a difference.
During this time of year, I truly believe that in giving
we receive. To you and yours, we wish happy holidays
surrounded by loved ones and a new year filled with
peace and prosperity.
Our Mission

Growing Up is a Hard Thing to Do!
rowing up really is hard to do. But, imagine being a
teenager trying to grow up without parents to provide
the kind of care and support that every kid needs. That
is the situation that the more than 10,000 youth in our
state’s foster care system are facing. When these young
people reach the age of 18, they will “age out” of the foster care
system, leaving them with the responsibility of figuring out how
to make it on their own. Unfortunately, that is the very time
when they need support the most.
Youth in foster care often do not get the help they need with
high school completion, employment, accessing health care,
continued educational opportunities and housing. Studies of youth
who have left foster care have shown they are more likely than
those in the general population to not finish high school, be
unemployed and be dependent on public assistance. It is not
uncommon for many to find themselves homeless, in prison or
parents at an early age.
Florence Crittenton’s Independent Living (IL) Program
is designed to help these vulnerable youth meet the challenges
that adulthood will bring. Through the use of a comprehensive
curriculum and numerous other community resources, clients are
equipped with the necessary tools to make a successful transition
into adulthood and out of the foster care system. Young people
in this program learn skills such as how to search for employment, completing a professional resume, budgeting, how to
balance a checkbook and what educational options are available
for them after high school. The program also provides support
and advocacy for these clients as they maneuver through a complicated foster care system.
Wish List
You can help support young
people in the Independent Living
Program by providing the
following items:
• Personal CD players
• Movie tickets
• Target gift cards
Bernice is a 17-year-old girl who was referred to the IL
Program when she was placed in a shelter after being AWOL
from the foster care system for a lengthy period of time.
Bernice had a little boy during the time she was away from the
system who was taken into the custody of CPS when she was
found. Once in the program, Bernice began working with a
Parent Aid and attended drug education classes to help her
move towards reunification with her son.
With the help of her case manager, Bernice re-enrolled in
high school, obtained a job, opened a savings account and was
eventually reunited with her son. She is an extremely attentive,
loving and patient mother. She has come to terms with her
past mistakes and has made a commitment to herself and to her
son that she will work hard to provide a healthy environment
for them both.

girls living in our residential group home
get to go “shopping” as a reward for
such things as helping their peers or achieving their personal goals.
Georganne donated an amazing collection of clothing and accessories from
her sale rack that would make any girl giddy. Thank you, Georganne for your

Drive, which is hosted in partnership with Sleep
America. The girls are always excited when they
each receive a beautiful new pair of sneakers at the
celebration, but the highlight of the afternoon is
the opportunity they have to spend time socializing with Lisa and her daughter Samantha.
Randy teamed up with Crittenton Youth
Academy’s Science teacher to give students a
very special surprise demonstration about the
physics of baseball. Following the demonstration and a very interesting Q & A session,
Randy spent time with many of the students
personally showing them how to pitch.
In addition to their personal involvement, the
Johnsons have also made a significant financial
contribution to our agency. Last year, Florence
Crittenton was presented with a $100,000 grant
through The Randy Johnson Foundation –
A National Heritage Foundation. The grant
has funded a variety of activities for the girls,
outdoor furniture for our four cottage patios, as
well as two major renovation projects at our
Transitional Living apartment complex and the
Scottsdale Girls Ranch home.
We are deeply grateful to the Johnson Family for
their love and support of Florence Crittenton’s girls.
Doug Hall comes to
Florence Crittenton all the
way from Zimbabwe! Doug
has worked in finance and
accounting for many years and
wanted to share his knowledge with kids who needed it.
He now leads a weekly class with
girls from our Transitional Living program and students from Crittenton Youth Academy, teaching
such topics as basic computing, book keeping and
QuickBooks. Doug has even given the kids some
great skills in personal Finance. One student in
the class was just offered a job because of her
new computer skills!
Thank you, Doug for all that you do!

Hey Todd,
It’s me, Tiffany. I just wanted to say hi and thank you for
everything. I stopped by last week, but you weren’t in. I did
see everyone else though, and I’m sure they
told you how much I have changed. I am
a real girl now. I know it’s hard to believe,
but it’s true. I live in L.A. now and still
work at Wendy’s. Yesterday, I actually got

I have been clean and sober for three years
