In both cases, shops are discovering that the process of finding and deciding upon a printer can be
daunting. With about 200 wide-format printers on the market from nearly 50 companies, getting
a handle on which particular model would be best for your particular business is a bit like peering
down the gigantic cereal aisle at your local megamarket: Every choice looks appealing, but you can’t
possibly buy them all (although doing so is certainly a less-expensive proposition with cereal).
To help in your printer quest, we provide you with our 2007 Printer Sourcebook. We’ve assembled
comprehensive specs on nearly 200 printers and RIPs and provide them here in chart form. The
Printer Sourcebook comprises three separate sections:
• Rollfed printers: This section, “Rollfed Printers: Narrowing the Search,” charts more than 135 printers from more than 30 manufacturers around the marketplace.
• Flatbeds and hybrid printers: Titled “Flatbed Printers: Navigating the Shifting Landscape,” this section provides specs on more than 60 flatbed and hybrid printers, for those shops that need more
production-oriented machines.
• RIPs: In this section, “The Way of the RIP,” we list detailed information on 50 third-party RIPs for
wide-format applications.
In the two printer sections, we provide an array of specifications for each machine. The specs—which
range from printhead technology, ink type, and speed to RIP technology, price, year introduced, and
much more—will allow you to establish a starting point in your search for the printer that best fits
your company's needs.

Comprehensive specs on 135+ printers.

from looking for a new house. Yes, finding and evaluating homes can be
done by simply driving through neighborhoods or searching specific realestate websites. Generally, however, buyers identify their new home with
the help of housing listings—aka MLS listings—that are compiled by realestate specialists.
These MLS listings contain the same information on all homes: from
exact location, square footage, number of bedrooms and baths, to type of
heating system, local schools, taxes, lot size, and much more. While few of
us would purchase a home based solely on the information found in an MLS
listing, these listings do serve a critical function: They put all homes on an
equal playing field, allowing the home buyer to compare apples to apples
and oranges to oranges as he or she does an initial search. This way, smart
buyers can quickly narrow their search from hundreds of homes that fit
their broad specs to dozens that may have a feature or two they are particularly enamored with. MLS listings serve another purpose as well: You can
often spot trends in various housing features that influence the property’s
value—just a decade or two ago, for instance, it would have been rare to
see a deck listed, but now it’s rare to not see that feature show up.
Which brings us to the rollfed printer charts found on the following
pages. The Big Picture has assembled the same type of listings that realestate agents provide—in our case, complete and accurate information
and specs on the market’s current wide-format printers. Think “wideformat real estate.”
Questionnaires were sent to all wide-format printer manufacturers,
asking for detailed information on each of their current rollfed models (we’ll
cover flatbeds and hybrids in our August issue). The resultant
charts show the specs submitted by the OEMs, allowing shop
owners—not unlike home buyers using MLS listings—to narrow
their search for the right printer for their shop.
The charts provide comprehensive specs on more than 135
wide-format printers from 30 printer manufacturers in the US and
abroad. Print widths span the gamut from 24 to 200 inches, resolutions range from 150 to 2400 dpi, and printer speeds are available from 8 sq ft/hr to more than 4300 sq ft/hr. There is a wide
choice of inks—aqueous dye or pigment, solvent, mild-solvent,
and UV-curable inks—as well as many choices in inkset colors,
including multiple blacks, blue, orange, green, and violet, plus the
ever-popular white.
It’s interesting to note that the number of international companies responding to this year’s surveys has dropped. Last
year, in many cases, the US companies who distributed printers
for these overseas manufacturers completed the surveys, but
several of these companies have stopped distributing those
machines or retired from the printer business altogether. In addition, a few companies have slipped off the list—notably Kodak
and Splash of Color. But don’t count them out—the companies
report they will have new printer offerings in the fall of 2007
(we’ll keep you posted within the pages of The Big Picture and on
bigpicture.net).
Some notes on the specs we chose and the answers you’ll
see for each:
• Company and contact: We’ve listed the manufacturing company rather than the distributor. If a company has an exclusive
US distributor, we’ve listed that information in the Notes area.
In the case of companies listing printers from two different divisions, we’ve combined these under the single company name.
• Printer model: We’ve generally combined models if the only
difference between them is maximum media width or number of
colors offered (a few exceptions were made for space purposes).
• Maximum media width (in inches): Note that this is media
width, not image width—typically, image width will be 1 to 2
inches less than media width. Minimum here is 24 in.
• Maximum media thickness: Since more and more roll- and
sheetfed printers can accommodate thicker media, we have
added this spec for your convenience. It’s generally listed in
millimeters or inches.
• Media: What kind of media will the printer handle—roll,
sheet, rigid? As indicated earlier, in these charts, we did
not include printers that are tagged as hybrids or primarily flatbeds; these will be covered in our August issue.
• Printhead technology: Inkjet piezo, inkjet thermal, thermal
transfer, or photo imager/LED/laser.
• Colors: How many colors does the printer support? We did
not include monochrome units. In the case of photo printers,
we’ve indicated this with an “n/a.”
• Ink types accepted: Aqueous dye? Aqueous pigmented?
Solvent? Mild Solvent? UV-curable? Oil-based? Sublimation?
Other?
• Minimum true/apparent resolution: What is the minimum
true/apparent resolution in dots per inch (dpi)?
• Maximum true/apparent resolution: What is the maximum
true/apparent resolution in dots per inch?
• Maximum speed at a specific resolution: What is the printer’s fastest speed (sq ft/hr) and resolution (dpi)? Note that some
manufacturers provided the speed but not the resolution.
• High-quality speed at a specific resolution: What is the
speed (sq ft/hr) and resolution (dpi) for high-quality printing?
Again, some manufacturers provided the speed, but not the
resolution.
• RIP: What type of raster image processor comes standard
with the printer, if any? If a RIP is not standard, what optional RIPs
are available?
• Year Intro: What year was this particular printer model introduced?
• Price: What is the selling price of this printer, in US dollars?
• Warranty: How long is the warranty period?
• On-site Service Contract: What’s the cost of an on-site service contract?
• Training: Is training standard with the purchase of the
printer? Is it an option? If the latter, what is the cost?
• Notes: Additional information not covered in the chart cells.
As you go through the charts, keep in mind that all information was provided by the manufacturer/supplier. We asked for
specs only on currently available printers or printers that would
soon be on the market. Some manufacturers did not provide
information on newly released printers; in addition, some manufacturers chose to not include models that seemed to still be on
the market and we honored these requests. Finally, note that
some printer manufacturers were unable to reply to our requests
for information due to deadline constraints, so these printers
were not included.

made its grand entrance into the marketplace. And as it is with the debut of virtually
any high-tech product, people already are wondering when and how Apple will top itself
when the next generation of the iPhone is unveiled.
Granted, the type of hysteria surrounding the launch of the iPhone (aka “iPhoria”)
is not something that we’re likely to experience in the wide-format marketplace—no
printer OEM, for instance, has ever reported hundreds of customers lining up outside
their doorway for their latest printer to go on sale.
That’s not to say, however, that print providers don’t anxiously anticipate
the newest printers or speculate about the latest features or technology advancements that might be found in the brand-new models.
At the same time, of course, they continue to be challenged by the
number of new printers and models that appear in the marketplace. It
has become a daunting task to keep track of just which printers—rollfed
or flatbed—are currently offered, are no longer offered, or are in transition
(either on their way out of the market but yet to make their final bow, or on their
way into the market, but still in beta, etc.).
To help, we present our annual Flatbed Printer charts to assist you in navigating
the shifting landscape of flatbed and hybrid printers. And shifting is it ever: This year’s
flatbed charts include approximately 30 new printers or models compared to the 2006
charts; however, nearly 20 printer models that appeared on last year’s lists have been
removed—for the most part, because they are no longer in production.
In the midst of this change, however, there are some consistent patterns to be
found. The white ink trend, for instance, continues to grow: 22 printers, compared
with last year’s 14, offer white ink as standard or optional. Additionally, UV-curable ink

is still, by far, the predominant inkset used with these printers. Rising costs are, unfortunately for
your pocketbook, another consistent trend: The Inca Onset, a new addition to this year’s charts,
comes in at a whopping $3 million, for example.
This year’s chart lists more than 60 flatbed and hybrid printers from 26 printer manufacturers in
the US and abroad. Print widths range from 48 to 188 in., and the listed printers boast various resolutions, an increase in choices when it comes to inksets and RIPs, and maximum output speeds
that range from 75 sq ft/hr to 5000+ sq ft/hr.
Some notes here on the specs we chose and the answers you’ll see for each:
• Company and contact: We’ve listed the manufacturing company rather than the distributor. If
a company has an exclusive US distributor, we’ve listed that information in the Notes area.
• Printer model: We’ve generally combined models if the only difference between them is maximum media width or number of colors offered.
• Maximum media width (in inches): Note that this is media width, not image width—typically,
image width will be 1 to 2 in. less than media width. Minimum here is 24 in.
• Maximum media thickness: Listed in millimeters or inches.
• Media: What kind of media will the printer handle—roll, sheet, rigid? Again, we did not chart
printers that are primarily rollfed (see our July issue for these).
• Printhead technology: All machines listed are inkjet piezo.
• Colors: How many colors does the printer support? We did not include monochrome units.
• Ink types accepted: Aqueous dye? Aqueous pigmented? Solvent? Mild-solvent? UV-curable?
Oil-based? Sublimation?
• Minimum true/apparent resolution: What is the minimum true/apparent resolution in dots per
inch (dpi)?
• Maximum true/apparent resolution: What is the maximum true/apparent resolution in dots
per inch?
• Maximum speed at a specific resolution: What is the printer’s fastest speed (sq ft/hr) and
resolution (dpi)? Note that some manufacturers provided the speed but not the resolution.
• High-quality speed at a specific resolution: What is the speed (sq ft/hr) and resolution (dpi)
for high-quality printing? Again, some manufacturers provided the speed, but not the resolution.
• RIP: What type of RIP comes standard with the printer, if any? If it’s not standard, what optional
RIPs are available?
• Year Intro: What year was the printer model introduced?
• Price: What is the selling price of this printer, in US dollars? Prices range from the low-end
flatbeds/hybrids in the $40,000 to $60,000 range to top-end machines that carry a price tag of
$850,000 to $3 million.
• Warranty: How long is the printer warranted for?
• On-site service contract: What’s the cost of an on-site service contract?
• Training: Is training standard with the purchase of the printer? Is it an option? If the latter, what
is the cost?
• Notes: Additional information not covered in the chart cells.
As you go through the charts, keep in mind that all information was provided by the manufacturer/supplier. We asked for specs only on currently available printers or printers that would soon
be on the market. Some manufacturers did not provide information on newly released printers; in
addition, some manufacturers chose not to include models that seemed to still be on the market
and we honored these requests. Finally, note that some printer manufacturers were unable to reply
to our requests for information due to deadline constraints, so these printers were not included.

THE WAY OF THE
RIP
Third-party RIPs: simpler to use, able to handle more complex tasks.
G>EbVcj[VXijgZgh]VkZXdci^cjZY the trend of making have some applicability to wide-format printing (if not now then
their products easier to use. But simultaneously, many of these
same simpler RIPs—or, in many cases, their upstream cousins—
are capable of tackling more difficult tasks and jobs.
The “keep it simple” trend continues because many print providers often still have to hire machine operators without the deep
expertise they might ideally want, or, alternately, they’re asking
more employees to multi-task. Either way, the print shop wants
the production to go as smoothly as possible.
At the same time, however, printing machinery is becoming
capable of doing more—and the RIP has to be able to handle
whatever job is asked of it. Hence, the RIP manufacturers are
confronted with making the RIP work seamlessly and be able to
do some intricate work behind the scenes.
To help you decipher your RIP options—those simple as well
as those complex—we asked third-party RIP suppliers to provide
us with basic information on each of their RIP models, and we
present that information here in charted form. In all, 20 RIP suppliers provided us with specs on 50 individual RIP models.
We asked manufacturers to tell us if their RIP models offered
a score of RIP features, and also asked if these features were
standard or optional. Of course, manufacturers also provided us
with other features specific to their RIP models as well, which
we’ve strived to include in the “Notes” section. In looking at four
features in particular, we find these results to be of interest:
Support for variable data: Despite the interest voiced on this
topic by both end users and suppliers, only about 40% of the individual RIP models offer this feature, and most of those doing so
offer it as an option, not standard.
SWOP-certified: Only about 30% of the RIP models offer SWOP
certification. Although some industry pundits believe SWOP to
in the future), this figure seems to indicate that SWOP still has
inroads to make when it comes to wide format.
JDF support: Only about 25% of the RIP models offer support
for JDF, the Job Definition Format, which is designed to help technology speed production and increase reliability. Support for JDF
across the marketplace is slowly but surely happening, but perhaps at a much more leisurely pace than some anticipated.
Remote proofing: Nearly 70% of the printer models listed here
offer some form of remote-proofing support, either as a standard
feature or as an option.
On the other hand, several features (which you’ll see listed in
the charts’ “Notes” section) appear to be on the rise: support for
white ink, for instance, as well as support for custom inksets and
grayscale; modular construction, allowing the user to choose a
“base” model and add the features important to the buyer; specialty RIPs for specialty applications (textile printing, separations,
etc.); and specialty RIPs designed for specific printer models.
Keep these points in mind as you peruse the charts on the
pages that follow:
• We only included RIP models that were geared toward
or could handle wide-format output; we did not include RIPs
designed for narrow-format work.
• Following the model name, we list approximately 20 RIP features, and indicate if each feature is standard (S) or optional (O)
on that particular RIP model. If a cell is left blank, you can assume
that the feature is not offered.
• File formats supported: We designed this chart to be a staging area for your research into which third-party RIP might best
suit your individual operation. Hence, we listed only basic file
formats handled, not every file format listed by the supplier.
