Born in Brittany in 1982, Julien Dossena grew up between the village of Pouldu in the Finistère region, Berlin and the South of France. After his baccalaureate in 2000, he studied at the Ecole d’Arts Appliqués Duperré in Paris, then at La Cambre, an internationally recognized school in Brussels specialized in the world of art and design, from 2002 to 2007. While still a student, he was awarded the Special Prize of the Jury and the 1.2.3 Prize at the Festival International de la Mode of Hyères in 2006. In 2008, he joined the Runway Studio at Balenciaga as Senior Designer, working side by side with Nicolas Ghesquière. He stayed there until the latter departed in 2012, and then launched his own ready-to-wear brand, Atto. In July 2013, after being named Artistic Director of Paco Rabanne, he renewed and relaunched their women’s ready-to-wear, that had run out of steam since the departure of founder Paco Rabanne in 1999. Deeply anchored in his era, Julien Dossena has successful managed to combine experimental research, inspired by the history of the Paco Rabanne house, along with his vision of a resolutely contemporary fashion statement, adapted to the daily life of today’s urban women. PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION STILLS NEW The festival decides to open the field of possibilities in photography by asking the ten finalists to take two still lifes with fashion accessories. Photographs published in the catalog will be presented at the festival and may be subjects for a special price. STILLS & STYLES The history of art and its market, simultaneously designating photography as an artistic expression and a marketable object, quickly forgot the contribution of important photographic authors to the uses for which the medium was employed, whether it was a question of fashion or advertising photography. And yet, from Man Ray to Irving Penn, via Diane Arbus, Germaine Krull and recently Philip-Lorca diCorcia, numerous artist photographers have irted with applied photography. Within these con ned consignments, creating photographs that are often countercurrent to the policed images of glossy paper pages, its authors — and their commissioners — have contributed in awakening a visual environment that was drowsy and replete with innumerable conventions. The festival thus takes up the role of commissioner, with its constant desire of engaging creative conversations between fashion and photography. Hence it has asked the ten competing photographers to create a still life. This is the rst time that most of them will have studied a fashion accessory of their choice in order to create a portrait, each in their own way. Here are ten inhabited still lifes. Mr. Rabanne (1934 - present) was a polymath creator, whose legacy reaches beyond prét-à-porter to encompass a rich artistic career that projected the progressive image of a liberated modern woman that still resounds decades later. Trained as an architect, his sculptural creations held little precedent in the field of fashion, renowned as they were for a melange of unexpected materials and linear forms balanced by a flair for racy silhouettes and forward-thinking glamour. Having started his fashion career in 1961 with a collection of accessible plastic accessories including bangles, statement earrings, and foot jewels, Rabanne took an unconventional route to dressing women – unconcerned with the demure couture traditions of the passing decade and more interested in breaking the boundaries of fabric research and streamlined modern shapes. He integrated materials like panels of linked ‘rhodoid’ metal (not sewn with needle and thread but worked with pliers), and moulded Giffo plastic into his collections the former chainmail dresses becoming an iconic heirloom of the house. Today their spirit is translated each season under Dossena’s deft hand, in sophisticated new propositions, from baroque floral print mesh to racy colour-blocked separates. It was with that same innovative spirit that Paco Rabanne engaged his vibrant circle of artistic friends as collaborators during his lifetime – from his family’s embroidery atelier to the visionary minds of the surrealist artist Salvador Dalì and photographer Jean Clemmer. Together they explored his aesthetic universe, which perpetuated a sensual yet Brutalist perspective on the cold futurism of the day. Fast-forward to 2016 and that same collective attitude defines Dossena’s cerebral approach to the house; a cast of creative luminaries from Paris and beyond surrounds him, each complementing his collections with their diverse talents in the fields of image making and beyond. From the styling talent of Marie-Amelie Sauve to photographers like Patrick Demarchelier, Coco Capitan, Maurice Scheltens & Liesbeth Abbenes, the artist David De Beyter and the architects Kersten Geers & David Van Severen, Dossena’s new guard of European talents spans both disciplines and generations – their balance of raw and refined aesthetics enriching the world of Paco Rabanne with a fresh and youthful sophistication. Central to that world are Dossena’s ready-to-wear designs, which in two short years have set a new precedent for modern luxury and wearability for the house. In the span of ten collections a distinct through line of athletic elegance has emerged; Dossena’s expert touch bringing a new effortlessness to the sculptural house codes by intertwining a delicate balance of structure and ‘flou’. Criss-crossing elements of evening and sportswear, Dossena’s collections have succeeded by remaining inspired yet not thematic, drawing from an array of global influences from streetwear to Japonisme whilst respecting a real-world, urban appeal. Zipped jersey, second-skin knitwear, transparent and soft metallic textiles have become crucial elements in his pragmatic designs. Often paired with flat hybrid shoe styles, they allude to the sensual, down-to-earth sophistication that defines Paco Rabanne today. Dan Thawley EXHIBITION PACO RABANNE WORK IN PROGRESS swimming pool, villa Noailles Coco Capitán, Défilé Spring/Summer 2016 EXHIBITION CONCERT JACKSON LIGHT METAL MUSIC BRUME SONORE #2 © Keffer Pigeon house and garden, villa Noailles To mark the inauguration of the festival, Julien Dossena invites Jackson to perform on the forecourt of the villa Noailles. Featuring a collection of designed electro-acoustic instruments, this concert will be based on the sound of resonating metal sheets and vibrant bodies. Entitled Light Metal Music, this project came to life at IRCAM (Centre Pompidou) and continued its path for a series of performances at the Venice Biennale of Art 2015, and for the French gallery Kamel Mennour. Currently pursuing his research on the hybridisation of different mediums at the villa Medici in Rome, Jackson’s music is built upon the relationships between gesture and the perception of vibratory phenomena. Jackson is also exhibiting his work Brume Sonore #2 in the villa’s dovecot. This sculptural device takes us to a space in which the physical nature of light shapes the flow of a generative sound. A beam of diffracted light crosses a cloud of water particles which reveals the colours of the spectrum of light. Founded upon a spectral analogy, this process rests upon a conversion of wavelengths in the visible domain into a sound signal. Together, the vibratory phenomena enter into a resonance with the senses and the nature of the device, because the sound generated is amplified and reflected by a mirrored metal resonator. The vibrations produced by the metal, whose surface has allowed for the light to be projected in the moving vapour, reproduces the frequencies of colour. Jackson EXHIBITION WILLIAM KLEIN WILLIAM KLEIN + POLLY MAGGOO squash court, villa Noailles William Klein, « Cabine et Mannequins, Op-Art », Qui êtes-vous Polly Maggoo?, 1965 The equation, William Klein + Polly Maggoo, is sheer alchemy. 1966. Roll titles: the words “Who are you, Polly Maggoo?” appear, blinking, and get closer, worrisomely closer. Right from the start the question posed seems visceral, urgent. No visuals, yet already we make out the sound of clashing sheet-metal and footsteps amid background noise. And the action starts without delay for time is short and space, lacking. Backstage a whole mechanism is getting ready to run behind the black curtain of the titles sequence. Close-up: an ovalface held within a lens constitute by the “o” in Polly. Immediate and unmediated, hands shift, words are exchanged. The backstage environment, it seems, is that of a fashion runway. In this manner, starting with that first and legendary scene, the film becomes an unsurpassed and visionary satire of the world of fashion. Yet the filmic personality of Who are you, Polly Maggoo? is far more complex than such a hasty summary can convey. Polly is polymorphous, polysemic. Polly is everywhere. Polly is both a fashion icon and, under that wig, behind her jet-black eyes, a very young woman, wellturned out as she says, and open; all rabbit teeth and freckles. Maggoo is McGowan, first name Dorothy; lead actor of the film, fashion model by trade. On top of all this she’s Klein’s accomplice: Klein, the fashion photographer. So she’s a model, this Polly McGowan or Dorothy Maggoo, evolving between the four walls of a tiny hotel room on one hand, the vast breadth of Paris’s great boulevards on the other. She strolls from runway to photo shoot (we catch a passing glimpse of Richard Avedon, of Louis Faurer, playing themselves) and sees herself becoming object rather than subject of a TV show dissecting the life of “people,” as well as the fantasy of Prince Igor. Raphaëlle Stopin EXHIBITION JULIEN COLOMBIER JUNGLE CREDIBILITY gymnasium and sautoir, villa Noailles Intimacy of art with nature ... an unexpected visual encounter leafing through an imaginary and mysterious forest, with flamboyant colours, laid upon matte paper or upon the walls themselves. ... the discovery of a painter who is sensitive and inhabited by a dreamlike universe where nature is at the heart of his work. Strength and fragility meet one another, plentiful nature is faced with geometrical and mineral structures which paradoxically animate Julien’s works. A magician with colour, textures with oil pastels and acrylic paint, his practice has seduced the world of fashion… Agnès Liely CHANEL EXHIBITION SJOERD KNIBBELER IN EVERY DIRECTION new gallery, villa Noailles Forming Synchrony, 2016 He titles his works simply as “Current Studies”, each is then accompanied with a hash and a number. Hence, they are study pieces. Their purpose? To picture that which habitually escapes photography, to grasp the impermanent and the invisible: the movement of air. The image is thus the result of the experiments conducted between the four walls of Sjoerd Knibbeler’s studio. Nothing is complicated in the materials and instruments used: PVC, paper, glass and wood are associated with fans, vacuum cleaners and other familiar machines which create a flow of air. With Forming Synchrony, the image thus pictures movement, the fingers spread out, wrists untie themselves and heads, eyes closed, slowly outline circles in the air. In the video, we see the pilots of the Patrouille de France, in formation within a large hangar in the south of France, in Salon-de-Provence, sit upon basic stools, wearing their sky-blue jumpsuits, and practice their routine. At the heart of this work, is another impermanent and invisible phenomenal, which Sjoerd Knibbeler endeavours to translate as an image: desire, that of being in the air, of finally flying. Forming Synchrony was created during Sjoerd Knibbeler’s personal exhibition at the thirty-first International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères. Sjoerd Knibbeler was the winner of the Grand Prix du jury Photographie at the festival in 2015. He is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Art, the Hague, he has recently exhibited at FOAM (Amsterdam), Espace Quai 1 (Vevey), Nederlands Fotomuseum (Rotterdam), and at Paris Photo, with his critically acclaimed book Planes editions FW:Books Amsterdam (2015) as part of the selection of photography( books created by Aperture. Raphaëlle Stopin EXHIBITION I COULD NEVER BE A DANCER JUST IN TIME Tour des Templiers, city center, Hyères The Power Of X. Ted Tedxsummit, Doha, Qatar Réalisé Par Körnerunion The smart set Or the art of dancing elegance impertinently. The work of the duo Carine Charaire and Olivier Casamayou, choreographers, artistic directors and producers, under the name I could never be a dancer, create energetic video clips for atmospheric events for fashion houses, from an artistic scene in a museum to the choreographic signature of advertising campaigns, the same light, lively and irreverent attitude. (...) Thus to create a “retrospective” for this exhibition at the villa Noailles, is to treat I could never be a dancer’s series as a single investigation: an open and confident prospective, a dialogue between fashion, contemporary art and dance, and the relevance of creating an elasticity between these domains. Significantly, their propositions, ephemeral dance and editorial performances with long choreographies, test the experience and the eye of the spectator: surprising through discrete virtuosity, without fear of diversion, augmenting the real without suffocating or recanting it, chanting the poetry of a calligram, where the idea of pleasure felt almost validates the danced movement. An idea of style therefore, with a typically French attitude, the glamour of a certain new wave too, that of Jacques Demi, an uncomplacent tradition which, between a musical and a conceptual performance, offers a quality of atmosphere full of spirit and impetuosity — a minor transgression which tickles rather than assaults or asserts. Ultimately, an idea of fashion, which is not without recalling the intelligence of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and d’Elsa Schiaparelli to summon the important elements of the period, of pop culture, and to create sufficient signs which crystallise a style, a means of being, a danced appeal. On air, just in time. Mathieu Buard EXHIBITION HERVÉ LASSÏNCE NOTRE ÉTÉ stairs, villa Noailles Le Marais plage, Hyères Yassin, Laurent, Rome chez mes parents, Paris For several years now, I have photographed people in the flow of everyday life who are close to me: friends, lovers, couples. The series is called Mes frères. For the festival, I suggested Notre été to the villa Noailles: a selection of images linked to holidays, warmth, the languor of desire, in the towns of southern France, in the Maghreb and the islands of the Mediterranean. On the same theme, this series is also enriched with images taken on the Île du Levant. In contrast to these solar images, are those of the night, a series on clubbing in Paris, a long-term project: La galaxie de l’amour instantané. Hervé Lassïnce EXHIBITION XAVIER VEILHAN VENT MODERNE cinema room, initial building villa Noailles Vent Moderne, 2015, film Hd, noir et blanc, 27’39’’ Photo Stéphane Perche © Veilhan © Mallet-Stevens / ADAGP Paris, 2016 Xavier Veilhan maintains a close relationship with architecture, as his project Architectones (2012-2014) bears witness. Within the context of a proposal for the Cinéma en plein air du parc de la Villette festival (Paris), he created a film which plays with perspectives, scale, and the ties between décor and architecture. The sequences are articulated around the character of a concept developer, an artist, an architect, for which the actor Micha Lescot lends his features. Vent Moderne stages a succession of fantasised moments of the protagonist’s life: times for architectural design, for meetings, for travels, for festive and pleasurable moments. A more abstract dimension is added to this narrative aspect: a succession of visual evocations amongst which the spectator finds their own path. “The film was never really written, but rather drawn. Its scenes were shot like animated tableaux, its narration is constructed around pre-existing sequences. The shoot was the moment of capturing these instants which the action drives and, following a documentary mindset, room was left for improvisation, or rather for the evolution of the predefined situations.” (Xavier Veilhan) Vent Moderne is a film by Xavier Veilhan. Concept devised with Alexis Bertrand and Violeta Kreimer. Produced by Dimitri Chamblas and Amélie Couillaud. With (e.a.) Micha Lescot and Stephen Thompson. Music and sound design: Pierre Avia, Florian Sumi, Yujim. Choreography: Dimitri Chamblas. Production: Atelier Xavier Veilhan. Coproduction: La Villette, eXorde (Collection Casoar). With the support of the villa Noailles et du Centre des monuments nationaux. EXHIBITION GEORGES HUGNET AT THE EXPENSE OF WORDS pink room, initial building villa Noailles La Perle, 1929, 33 min, n.& b., muet, Cinémathèque royale de Belgique. Photographie de tournage et de photogrammes de La Perle, tirages originaux, 1929. Since its inauguration, in 2010, the permanent exhibition Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, a life as patrons devotes its displays to shedding light on the life and works of this couple. From the middle of the 1920s until the end of the 19060s, they assisted artists and intellectuals, acting in order to promote all forms of modern and avant garde art: cinema, literature, music, architecture and even ethnography. Through specific themes, or by focusing on a particular person close to the Noailles, a temporary exhibition always defines more precisely the extent of their actions. Often mentioned, Georges Hugnet takes the place of honour in the Salon Rose, from February 10 until 5 June. Defining Georges Hugnet (1906-1974) as an unclassifiable travelling companion for the intellectual and artistic adventures of the 20th Century, an essential witness and a faithful friend to Marie-Laure de Noailles, constitutes a necessary prerequisite, even if it is insufficient. A poet with scissors, anthologist, scriptwriter, editor on a mountain, sketcher on table cloths, bookseller, unrepentant collagist, painter of stones, resistant, inventor of objects, bookbinder on bark and first historian of the Dada movement, the life of this genius jack of all trades is full of brilliances. Of this brilliance, the history of cinema has retained that of La Perle [The Pearl], a jewel of a surrealist film, shot in 1929. This film would serve as his most famous feat of arms, because, contrary to his friends Picasso, Miró, Gertrude Stein, Éluard, Max Jacob, Giacometti and Cocteau, his modesty and his faithfulness to his ideals earnt him a place in the shadows. The difficulty of summarising an œuvre that is in a class of its own accentuated this obscurity. Hugnet wrote on his ex-libris : “Mieux vaut plus tôt” [Better Sooner]. It is not too late therefore to read, to discover, the life and works of he who said that he was first and foremost a poet. Stéphane Boudin-Lestienne and Alexandre Mare EXHIBITION THE EPHEMERA OF FASHION CATALOGUES AS PHOTOGRAPHIC BOOKS Summer house, garden, villa Noailles The bookshop Tailor Books, specialist in fashion photography books,is present for the third consecutive year at the festival of fashion and photography at the villa Noailles. This new participation initiates the venture of publication and creation of exhibitions dedicated to photographic books themselves. For this first exhibition, Tailor Books has called upon the talents of Marco Pecorari (Ph.D, director of MA Fashion Studies at Parsons The New School, Paris) and Marlène Van de Casteele (lecturer in fashion history at ENSAD and Ph.D. candidate in fashion photography at the university Lumière Lyon 2). EXHIBITION EVANGELIA KRANIOTI UNLIGHT / SUNLIGHT Stairs, villa Noailles Odalisque (détail), Unlight / Sunlight, 2015 “Beirut, town of fictions. Behind tinted and lowered windows, she puts on a scene. The spectacle starts at the plane with a long, astonishing tracking shot, visible to only a handful of passengers, whilst the indigo sea extends the other side. Each trip I tried to sit on the best side of the plane, but the view changed according to the flights and timetable. Even during these missed aerial encounters, Beirut revealed itself as sumptuous in its duality; between presence and absence, light and darkness. A Mediterranean science fiction landscape for which I was incapable of saying whether relics dated from the past or the future. Amongst these, the Holiday Inn, the Egg, the Grand Théâtre and the surrounding architectures, décors that are worthy of Blade Runner, bathed in pink light. I remember the first time I crossed the avenue which leads to Rafic Hariri airport in the middle of town, the atmosphere was electric, charged with urgency and nostalgia. A few kilometres to the north or the south, conflicts were still on the lookout. At the same time, Beirut danced in defiance of the depths of despair, like an elegant figure heading straight forward into the uproar of History.” Evangelia Kranioti In 2015, Evangelia Kranioti won the Prix Spécial du jury Photographie as well as a residency and the Elie Saab creative grant. She travelled several times to Beirut where this fashion house is situated, in order to create a portrait of the town. EXHIBITION EVANGELIA KRANIOTI BARRIE Hall principal, villa Noailles Barrie, 2015 “Scottish light is almost supernatural. Dramatic from one moment to the next, subdued or brilliant, its main quality is that it invites a reflection on the passing of time. Filming there, is to commune with a perpetually evolving nature, to the extent where everything becomes a spectacle, theatrical and ritual. This commission from Barrie allowed me to observe how, beyond its aesthetic, Scottish nature is intrinsically tied to a savoir faire, allowing for the flourishing of a long tradition. The cashmere begins its journey in Asia but comes to fruition in Scotland, in part due to the quality of the water in its rivers. I appreciated the demanding path which this noble material requires, this search for supreme quality, a quest for the impossible — and I wanted to be a part of it.” Evangelia Kranioti In 2015, Evangelia Kranioti won the Prix Spécial du jury Photographie under the presidency of Eric Pfrunder, Chanel’s Image Director. From Eric Pfrunder to Chanel, from Chanel to the Métiers d’Art, and from the Métiers d’Art to Barrie: Evangelia Kranioti was given carte blanche within the domain of this Scottish house of cashmere. EXHIBITION ANNELIE SCHUBERT TWINSET fashion show, salin des Pesquiers, Hyères Photographies : Jan Reiser Collection created with the Chanel’s Métiers d’Art: Barrie cashmeres, Lesage embroideries, Lognon plissés, Massaro shoes. Annelie Schubert, winner of the Grand Prix du jury Première Vision in 2015 presents her second collection at Hyères. The ensemble twinset is coordinated. Taken separately, the looks form a composition of pieces created in a monochrome material; taken as an ensemble, the collection offers a range of interchangeable elements according to an assorted palette. She reasserts the major themes of her style which enthused the jury last year. Of note, are the straight shoulders which construct the entirety of the body, the skirts and apron dresses are tied in the back, and the superimpositions and linings are exposed. Each composition tends to reveal the character of a material through the nuance which expresses it the best. The fabrics and knits are fashioned out of a range of treatments which allow them to express all of their potential. Silk, cashmere and wool are stiffened by being bonded together, then embroidered with translucent stones or marked with pleats. Plissé fabric is used to transform the material’s structure and to modify its volume. La précision des coupes confère une ligne claire à chaque The precision of cut confers a clean line where each outline can be read as mirrored, like the blending of two possibilities. The designer pays homage to the manufacturers and craftspeople who produce these exceptional fabrics and knits. She underlines this sumptuousness which opens up an infinite number of combinations by guiding the gaze towards the materials. The designer wished to create a living ensemble: she presents a subtle and opulent collection, far from the clumsy excesses of beginners. Magalie Guérin EXHIBITION PIERRE P. MARCHAL THE EVER-LOADING MUSEUM a digital exhibition on Instagram instagram.com/JPPM.FR Following his studies at the Chambre syndicale de la couture, Pierre P. Marchal decided to focus upon the press, events, and visual identity through various collaborations. In parallel, he has worked on a personal project through social media and Instagram in particular under the moniker JPPM. (...) Through the initiative of Jean-Pierre Blanc, for the villa Noailles, Pierre P. Marchal was invited to further this visual calligraphy with the virtual context of an exhibition on Instagram. Within this yet to be explored space by museums, he has created a journey, an architecture which invites the subscribed visitor towards a unique experience. It is thus armed with this singular phrasing that JPPM invites us to discover these works and inspirations through a selection of artists seen, distinguished, and met through this application. The posts published each day will serve as an Ariadne’s thread, links for wandering from room to room and join each universe assembled and constructed by the pertinent eye of JPPM. From painting to photography, sculpture to video, all sorts of media may be found in this digital gallery: The Ever-Loading Museum. Jean-Philippe Pons EXHIBITION CLAIRE LAVABRE COULD IT BE THAT IT’S JUST AN ILLUSION Stairs, villa Noailles Photo : Claire Lavabre, 2016 In her work on mirrors, Claire Lavabre focuses on the visual experience of reflections. The installation Could it be that it’s just an illusion questions perception and exposes some of the possibilities of reflections. The first mirror presents a reflection which is modified thanks to the shaping of the reflective material and according to the placement of the spectator and the orientation of their gaze. This mirror is the result of the joining together of three brass panels, curved and then chromed. On the flat surfaces of this mirror, the perception of the reflection is the same as that obtained with a traditional mirror, whereas it evolves and distorts at the point where the folds are formed by the curve. For the second mirror also with three panels, two reflective surfaces are placed one opposite the other. A light source is inserted in order to create an optical illusion. When it is switched off, this mirror has a normal appearance. Once lit, the play of light and its multiple reflections create the illusion of a deep space contained within the interior of the object. This image reflected to infinity fuses with a luminous horizon. EXHIBITION JORGE PENADÉS TOO GOOD TO BE WASTED MIROIR escaliers, villa Noailles Structural Skin. Photo : Humberto Ribes Discovered during a trip to Japan in 2014, the exhibition is inspired by boro: a traditional Japanese folk textile. This fabric represents two essential principles of Japanese culture, mottainai a term that conveys a deep sense of regret concerning waste and borobor which celebrates the beauty in something frayed, decaying or repaired, demonstrating a vast esteem for our available resources, labour and everyday objects. The exhibition is based on Structural Skin — a self-produced material made out of leftovers from the leather industry. In this case, the objective was to go a step further and create a flat surface rather than the original leather slats, investigating new potential applications for this innovative material. Starting from the idea of a visual system for a larger collection, this mirror consists of basic geometrical shapes derived from circles and rectangles. The colours depend upon the contributions of his partners. The raw material used for these pieces come from offcuts and remnants from the French fashion house Hermès, Petit h. The designer adopts an attitude which is consistently dissident and bears an increasing interest on the intangible aspects of his discipline, he explores areas that transcend conventional design. Being receptive to unorthodox ideas allows him to obtain nonstandard outcomes, opening up alternative opportunities with regards to a more responsible social, cultural, economical, political and intellectual context. It unites both managerial and creative professionals as well as experts on current and future affairs; it provides the opportunity for a very open exchange with the public. Four key moments will take place within the event this year. The first is devotedto what has been agreed upon as called “Fashion Tech”, in the form of a round table. The accent is placed upon the digital revolution which has overwhelmed all facets of fashion and its industry, from social networks to organisation, from consumption to creation. The round table might also rely upon the work of a student think tank which has been assembled for this purpose. The digital image is omnipresent on social networks and inhabits our everyday. Where is its artistic vocation and how does this manifest itself? Can it attest itself in keeping with what fashion photography has always been? This will be the subject of a second round table. A third meeting is devoted to sustainable development, which has become a major stake for the planet and its future. Numerous stakeholders in fashion are greatly implicated worldwide, supported by collective initiatives, as will be illustrated through various testimonies. A master class will also be organised, modelled on the one held in 2015 with Karl Lagerfeld who was president of the festival jury. The baton this year has been passed to Julien Dossena, artistic director at the Paco Rabanne fashion house and president of the 2016 jury. Finally, two workshops will put into perspective, on the one hand the work of this year’s competing photographers, and on the other hand the collections of theFormers, ten designers who have taken part in past festivals. As part of this collaboration, CHANEL provides support for the festival’s fashion activities as the official partner of the makeup cabin for the festival’s fashion shows. In addition to this, the prizewinner of the Grand Prix of the Jury Première Vision will have the opportunity to undertake a project with CHANEL’s Métiers d’Art united under Paraffection that will finance the development of silhouettes in its ateliers with the value of 15.000 euros. On top of this, CHANEL supports the Photography Grand Prix of the Jury, where the prize-winner will receive a donation of 15,000 euros. The CHANEL partnership with the Hyères Festival, a festival that encourages and champions young designers within the fields of fashion and photography, is part of an on-going process as creation is the very heart and soul of CHANEL. An autodidact and visionary, Mademoiselle Chanel created a particular style over a hundred years ago. This style became a brand and a name of renown appreciated the world over. All the products bearing its name from Ready-to-Wear and Haute Couture, to accessories, fragrances and beauty, Watchmaking and Fine Jewellery, together constitute a totality where all the brand values are found: luxury, creativity, innovation, audacity, modernity, femininity, highest quality and best know-how. Most notably are those of the Métiers d’art at Paraffection: embroiderers Lesage and Montex, feather and flower maker Lemarié, pleater Lognon, shoe maker Massaro and hat maker Maison Michel, all supply the top names in Haute Couture and the luxury industry. A brand constantly on the move, each CHANEL collection along with the staging and decor is conceived by Karl Lagerfeld to create an event which spans all continents. The photographic and cultural exhibitions showcasing brand icons and the historical and creative dimensions of the House are significant milestones. ‘I want to be part of what happens,‘ Mademoiselle Chanel took great pleasure in saying. Through this collaboration with the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères, CHANEL demonstrates its wish for openness towards different creative worlds, and once again reaffirms its commitment to creativity and avant-garde. www.chanel.com PARTNER OF THE FESTIVAL LVMH First historical private partner, LVMH supports the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography for the 18th year running. Première Vision Paris brings brands and designers looking for creative, high-quality collections together with selected international companies that number among the most innovative in the fashion industry. The event is both a business appointment and also an exceptional source of inspiration. The fashion information areas provide an overview of the season's trends and directions, and showcase key products. One of Première Vision's goals is also to support creativity and showcase know-how through strong, committed undertakings. For the past seven years, the "PV Awards" have been honouring the weavers' most remarkable and inventive creations. Since 2015, exceptional leathers are also awarded a prize. 6 and 7 July, Première Vision will propose in Paris a new concept, a show dedicated to the launch of the autumn winter 2017-18 collection: Blossom Première Vision, the season opening. Conceived to align with the dates of the season’s earliest collections (the pre-collections), and as a complement to the calendar of Première Vision Paris, which targets main collections, the show will offer creative luxury and premium fashion brands two days of inspiration. This event will be the ideal place to start collections by discovering the season’s new product developments and innovations. www.premierevision.com PARTNER OF THE FESTIVAL CHLOÉ Founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion, Chloé has always sought out and supported young talents, offering them a nurturing environment in which to express their creativity. Prestigious alumni played an important role in defining the Chloé attitude, including Karl Lagerfeld, Martine Sitbon, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo and Hannah MacGibbon, who perpetuated the avantgarde, feminine and free spirit of the Maison. Clare Waight Keller, creative director since 2011, has recently given a new momentum to Chloé, combining the couture savoir-faire with a youthful attitude. Chloé is proud to support the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères. www.chloe.com PARTNER OF THE FESTIVAL MERCEDES-BENZ Design is one of a brand’s most important success factors and plays a central role in both the fashion and automotive world. It is a combination of unusual ideas, personal character and unmistakable style. The mutual ambition for perfection, exceptional design and profound passion for innovation – this is what unites Mercedes-Benz with the world of fashion and thus with the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères. Mercedes-Benz started its commitment towards the fashion industry in 1995 as the title sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in Sydney which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2015. The year 2016 sees a continued support by MercedesBenz of over 50 fashion platforms worldwide, i.e. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weeks including Berlin, Beijing, Sydney, Istanbul, Madrid and Moscow and the prestigious fashion weeks in Paris, Milan and London. The support of fashion talents has been a major focus of Mercedes-Benz’s fashion engagement since the very beginning. As such, within the “International Designer Exchange Program”, Mercedes-Benz gives emerging designers the opportunity to showcase their creations to an international audience. Recent examples from season A/W16 are the exchange shows between Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid (Ela Fidalgo, winner of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent Award) and Mercedes-Benz Prague Fashion Week (Tereza Kladosova), Xiao Li (winner of the MercedesBenz China Designer Award), who closed London Fashion Week A/ W16 and the UK-based Mary Katrantzou at Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week A/W16. www.mercedes-benz.com/fashion PARTNER OF THE FESTIVAL DEFI The DEFI lies at the heart of the Fashion and Design ecosystem and has been working in the public interest for thirty years - it is almost the only means of support for all components of the French clothing industry. Its goal is to work for the development of the French clothing and fashion industry. As a result, it engages in huge projects aiming to speed up the development of businesses - especially internationally - in order to support creative work, to extend the influence of French fashion and the image of the Paris market on the global stage and to promote know-how. The image of excellence which France enjoys worldwide means that fashion is both a strategic industry and a genuine economic driving force and operates within a fast-changing environment. France is a country in which world leaders in luxury goods, cuttingedge designers, famous brands, new players and know-how of the highest standard all coexist. Paris is the only market in the world that widely opens its doors to foreign design. All of the participants in the industry meet within the DEFI to draw up plans of action and support: business leaders, professional federations, designers, experts. The DEFI is the industry’s only supervisory body, allowing them to compare points of view, decide upon a strategy and look for synergy by combining resources. The DEFI works on behalf of the whole industry, from design to sale and also including numerous promotional initiatives both in France and abroad, with businesses attending foreign trade shows, the organisation of international missions and welcoming buyers and journalists to Paris during fashion weeks, financing fashion shows, press centres, Designers’ Apartments, meetings at the Festival d'Hyères and support for the Andam prize. The work of the DEFI is designed to be fully operational, working on behalf of businesses and designers for an open, innovative and creative world. www.defimode.org PARTNER OF THE FESTIVAL GROUPE GALERIES LAFAYETTE The Galeries Lafayette group, partner of the villa Noailles since 2007, became in 2011 the first sponsor to support the program of the art center all year round. For the 31st International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères, the Group reasserts its commitment towards contemporary creation. The promotion of fashion and young creation is an essential part of the Group’s history. Aware of its leading role in the economic development of new talents, the Galeries Lafayette group strives to support creativity and inspiration, the very cornerstones of the fashion industry. The Group also furthers its commitment by inviting the young laureates into their store network, and by creating a capsule collection with the Galeries Lafayette brand. The Galeries Lafayette are at the heart of the festival and strengthen the event’s visibility by enabling the live retransmission of the young designers’ fashion show on Saturday April 23rd, from Paris to Beijing. The sponsoring actions of the Galeries Lafayette group are part of a long term sustainable approach in line with the firm’s project. Historically engaged in the promotion of fashion, the Group is today an important intermediary between young artists and a wider audience. The Festival, which enables the encounter of designers, manufacturers, agents, cultural institutions and distributors, echoes the department store’s true vocation as well as its role as a mediator between consumers, new trends and emerging talents. About the Galeries Lafayette group A leading city-centre fashion retailer with proven expertise, Galeries Lafayette Group is a family-run and private group, with 120 years of history in commerce and retail. The House of Nina Ricci was founded in 1932 by Robert Ricci for his mother, at 20 rue des Capucines, in Paris. An advertising executive as well as a co-founder of Studios Harcourt, the young Ricci spearheaded development for the family business while his mother focused on designing Haute Couture. A man of taste, Robert Ricci was savvy about partnering up with other top Couture talents over the years, from Jules-François Crahay to Gérard Pipart. In recent years, Olivier Theyskens, Peter Copping and, since 2015, Guillaume Henry were successively appointed Creative Director of the House. Robert Ricci’s aesthetic sensibility also resulted in numerous collaborations with prestigious artists, including his friend Marc Lalique and the illustrators Dimitri Bouchène and Christian Bérard. Many contemporary artists have also contributed to building the brand's image. Works have been inspired by the House and created either for special events or as window-dressing for the Avenue Montaigne flagship and other iconic addresses such as the American luxury goods department store Bergdorf Goodman. Andy Warhol, Daniel Buren, Larry Rivers, Sol Lewitt and the sculptor Cesar were among those who created notable works for the House of Nina Ricci. Photography was also central to the House's history, not least because the images shot by photographer David Hamilton for over 20 years will remain forever engraved in collective memory. Today the work of Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, to whom the Festival dedicated a retrospective in 2012, illustrated the brand's latest advertising campaigns. www.ninaricci.com PARTNER OF THE FESTIVAL GIVAUDAN Givaudan at the International Fashion and Photography Festival of Hyères in 2016.
