Cats and dogs can add so much to our lives, but did you know there are some great health benefits to having an animal companion in your home? 1)STRESS: When you feel that old familiar feeling of being out of control, your dog may walk up to you with that all-knowing look in his or her eyes, or your cat may hop up on your lap and start purring, reminding you that life doesn’t need to be so complicated. 2) BLOOD PRESSURE: Right up there with stress, your animal companion could help to lower your blood pressure with a good healthy dose of kindness. Our pets remind us that life can be simple when we relax and rest with our loved ones. Studies have shown that dogs can have a huge impact on your blood pressure just by having you walk them. 3)PAIN: Yep, our brain lets loose with some great chemicals when we’re happy and at peace. These chemicals can actually help with arthritis, gout and other painful maladies. What could make you happier than a loving pet? 4) LOWERS CHOLESTEROL: Though studies have shown that pets help with lowering cholesterol, they have remained inconclusive as to whether it’s because people with pets are likely more active or whether they are just more content and thereby they eat foods that are more health conscience and good for their bodies. 5) IMPROVES MOOD: People with pets are simply happier. There’s more laughter in their lives. Recently, dogs have been instrumental in helping soldiers cope with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It’s much easier to forget, or at least let go of our emotional pain when a dog not only gives us so much love, but needs it in return. We feel responsible for that loving animal and stay in the moment; letting a little of our sadness go when we get that look of concern and trust from our smaller companion. 6)SOCIALIZING: You may think online social networking is fun, but wouldn’t it be cool to meet a new friend face to face? Take your dog out to your local park; you’re sure to have someone compliment you on how handsome or beautiful your companion is. What an ice-breaker! Getting out of the house can be great for your health from head to toe, and making new friends can’t hurt either. 7)ALLERGIES: Did you know that new studies have shown that having a pet in your home during the early years of your child’s life can actually help them overcome allergies? It’s that old adage that the more exposure your child gets the more likely they are to develop a coping mechanism as they grow. Our bodies are great that way; we can overcome allergies by being exposed to them when we’re young. Our bodies simply adapt. If they didn’t, our ancestors wouldn’t have made it very far considering that most of our families are from countries that had totally different trees, plants and in some cases, animals. Give your child that extra boost and add a cat or dog to your family. 8) HELPS CHILDREN ADAPT SOCIALLY: Speaking of kids, what better way to teach them responsibility than by showing them the proper way to care for a family pet? Kids learn fast and if they have proper role models, they learn to understand the needs of your family pet and in doing so; they can become more socially responsible and aware. In today’s world, that sure sounds like a good way to guide your child to a great future. 9)EXERCISE: It’s pretty hard to sit still all day when your dog wants to play or your cat is running around the house chasing a toy. You can’t help but feel the urge to get up and play with them. What good is that? It’s exercise; it increases your breathing, blood The Pucketos Garden Club of New Kensington presented the shelter with their annual community service award, which included planting a young tree (a dogwood, of course) in the shelter’s honor. The certificate given to the shelter reads “In appreciation for your unselfish display of humanity for animals and commitment to the community.” Shelter dogs Honey, Nevada, and Daegan braved the rainy morning in May to show their support, along with volunteers from the shelter, the Mayor of New Kensington, and members of the Garden Club. Our tree is located near the airplane at Memorial Park in New Kensington. Thank you to everyone at the Garden Club for this honor. We look forward to watching our tree mature. Depending on the animal, you can go from mild to wild when it comes to exercise. Choose wisely though, so you don’t feel overwhelmed; it needs to be good for both you and your animal companion. 10) SENIORS: This is something I’ve seen directly through my in-laws. They are the happy human companions of Charm – a cat from our shelter that they received a few months ago - and since then they have experienced an increase in their energy levels, happiness and contentment. Sometimes senior citizens are lonely, feeling lost and left out from the rest of the world. A mild mannered pet can help them feel needed, and that’s something we all need from time to time. Just remember to bring your senior loved-one into the shelter when choosing a pet for them so that they can find the best match themselves. There are many more healthful reasons to have an animal companion, but when it comes right down to it, it’s important to remember that these animals need us as much as we need them. We become better people through our stewardship to our pets, and that’s good for all of us in every way. “Paws to Give” paw prints will be sold throughout the summer for $1 each. Write your name on the paw print or the name of a beloved pet or in memory of someone. Paw prints will be posted at the shelter or at local businesses where they may also be purchased. $5 Winning Ticket based on PA Daily Number 7:00 pm drawing Drawing Date: Friday, July 1, 2011 Rabies Clinic & Microchips Harmar Twp. Registration form to come in the AP Fall newsletter COMCAST CARES DAY AT ANIMAL PROTECTORS We had a great turn out April 30th when local Comcast employees showed up at Animal Protectors. Starting at 8 am, local Comcast employees and AP volunteers worked together to build a small cat run attached to the outside of the building as well as painting, landscaping, and repairing leaking pipes. On top of that we had a car wash to raise funds for the shelter. It was a great day of community service; a genuinely feel-good experience in which everyone came together to help our cats and dogs. This is Comcast’s 10th Annual Care Day. Each year on the same day all around the country, Comcast commits its employees to helping their local community grow through volunteer service. We’re extremely grateful to Comcast for their skill, hard work and dedication in making Animal Protectors a better place for our animal friends. Come by sometime and see the new cat enclosure. You’re sure to see some happy cats basking in the fresh air and sunshine on a warm summer day. Something To Chew On... FOSTERCARE As a shelter for cats and dogs, we often talk about the need for good volunteers, donations and kind people to adopt our animals. But there’s something more that we need, perhaps even more desperately for some of the animals that we take in: Foster parents. It sounds odd to be a foster parent of a cat or a dog and sometimes their litters, but in truth, the job of a foster parent is just as important as the work we do at the shelter itself because a foster parent will be taking certain animals into their homes to care for until we either have more room at the shelter, or to give them somewhere to spend their last days if they are terminally ill. Fostering isn’t easy and we need dedicated, kind, patient people for this important task. For example, right now it’s kitten season and we’re so overwhelmed with litter after litter being brought in by so many kind people that just want to make sure these little ones are safe and out of the elements. Unfortunately, we don’t always have room at the shelter because we have limited space. Turning away a needy animal breaks our hearts, so we turn to our fostering specialists for help. They have a network of people that can take these litters into their homes short-term, while we make room for them at the shelter by adopting out the cats and dogs already there and waiting. If we have people that can take a mother and her newborn kittens into their homes until the kittens are old enough to be put up for adoption at the shelter, then we can save more animals from the streets. And the more we save from the streets, the better we are able to keep the feral population under control through spaying and neutering the animals that come to us. One of the most important things we can do for our community is to never let an animal leave our shelter unless he or she is neutered or spayed. If you think you can find it in your heart to be a foster parent to a cat, a dog, kittens or puppies then please come to Animal Protectors and fill out a foster parent application. It’s a simple process and just provides us with information to verify that our precious animals will be watched over by someone we can trust. We really need you. So if you’ve ever wanted to do some volunteer work or make a difference in your community or the world for that matter, consider helping us with our stewardship toward our little friends. Please, come be a foster parent. We know that some of these pups had loving homes through their mannerisms and obvious training. We know that as we strive to find them a new home, there is a chance they are missing their old home. We want lost animals and owners to find each other should they become separated. In order to do that, Animal Protectors is now offering microchipping services to the community. The chips are AKC-CAR ISO chips. The cost for an animal you adopt/adopted from AP is only $20; this includes lifetime registration with the microchip company. For non-AP animals the cost is only $30, and also includes the registration. Once your animal has a microchip you are then able to apply for a lifetime license, this is an additional fee and is taken care of by the county in which you live. Interested in having your pet(s) chipped? Just call the shelter 724.339.7388 to set an appointment with either Laurie or Lindsay. Unfortunately, animals get lost. Make sure your furry friend is returned to you by taking advantage of this inexpensive service from AP. Remember, animals sometimes get lost, but with a microchip they are 20 times more likely to be returned home. Soft Paw Nail Caps ONLY $5 Soft Paw Nail Cap Application at AP - DON’T DECLAW, SOFT PAW!
