National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week - Nov. 1-7
National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is
November 1-7. For one week out of the year,
community members, animal lovers and grateful pet guardians come together to celebrate
their local shelters. This week is the perfect time
to recognize the hard work and dedication that
everyone involved with Animal Protectors puts
forth to help the homeless animals in our area.
Here are just a few ways to show that you care
and support Animal Protectors this week and
throughout the year.
National Animal Shelter
Appreciation Week
November 1 - 7
1. Adopt a Best Friend. Animals make great companions, but having a pet is a big
responsibility and it involves a lifelong commitment. If you’ve got what it takes to
give a shelter animal a loving home, stop by our shelter to find your perfect match.
2. Keep on Giving. Please remember that every penny helps. Donating to Animal
Protectors is as easy as writing a check and dropping it in the mail or picking up
an item on the shelter’s wish list during your next shopping trip. Even easier is
donating on-line by visiting our website.
3.
Be Committed. Providing quality food, water and shelter is important, but it’s
not the only thing involved in being a responsible and caring pet guardian. It’s
also essential that your pet has current identification tags and is properly confined
or supervised while outdoors. Keep your pet healthy and up-to-date on all vaccinations by visiting the veterinarian regularly and give your pet lots of love and
attention.
4.
Expect the Unexpected. Local shelters are most often on the front lines during
natural disasters. Would you know what to do in the event of a flood, tornado or
fire? Be prepared by learning how to help animals in your community, including
your own pet, whether it’s during a disaster, an emergency or an accident.
5. Stay Alert. Your local animal shelter and animal control agency not only take in
homeless animals, but also rescue injured, abused or neglected domestic animals.
Assist them by helping injured animals in your neighborhood, and letting them
know if you suspect animal cruelty in your community.
6. Spread the Word. Tell your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors about the
importance of supporting animal shelters and their staff.
7. Do Your Part. Spaying or neutering your pet is one of the most important things
you can do to reduce the number of homeless pets in your community. Spaying
and neutering your pet is important because it helps keep the animal population
down. Local animal shelters are already overcrowded with unwanted pets.
8. Two Simple Words. The words “thank you” are powerful. But since animals can’t
speak, it’s up to community members to let shelter workers and volunteers know
just how much their commitment to animals is appreciated. Send a letter, card or
e-mail to your local shelter and let them know you care.

What a delight it was to see so many dogs
and their owners at our 6th annual Tails
on the Trails Dog Walk on September 20,
2015. We even had a handsome gray cat
in a stroller attend this year! We absolutely love to see so many familiar faces
each year and it’s always so much fun to
see dogs that were adopted from our shelter. This year, we were honored by 16 of
these dogs. What a joy that was for all of
us who knew these pups when they were
living at the shelter, waiting for their new
owners to walk through the door. All of
the volunteers enjoyed hearing stories of
their new lives.
An event such as this one takes months
of planning, but once the start of registration on the day of the walk begins, the excitement reaches an all-time high. Seeing
so many wonderful dog (and cat) owners coming together to help the homeless animals at Animal Protectors warms
the heart. Without all of these dogs and
their owners, there would be no dog walk.
Thank you to everyone for attending and
for bringing in pledges from your families and friends. And a special thank-you
goes out to all of the volunteers who made
this event come together.
We hope that everyone who attended this
year had a great time and will come back
again next year (and hopefully bring a
friend or two).

2016 Animal Protectors Calendar
The 2016 Animal Protectors calendar is
now available at the shelter. There are
two versions this year - a new journal-style
calendar and the standard wall calendar.
Calendars are $10 each, regardless of the
type you choose.
Day of Caring with PPG
On September 24, five employees from PPG shared their
skills and talents with AP as part of the United Way/PPG
Day of Caring. The five enthusiastic and hard-working
PPG employees painted the dog kennels and the outdoor
cat enclosure with paint donated by PPG. In addition,
under the direction of Kennel Manager Marlane Saye,
they emptied the ‘back porch’, putting items into keep,
trash or recycle piles. After thoroughly cleaning the
porch (a dirty, wet job), usable items were re-organized
and returned to storage. We filled two dumpsters with
trash - thanks, Shanks Sanitation for the extra pickup!
Some items that AP could not use, but were still usable,
were shared with CART (Crisis Animal Response Team).

Florian, Kelly Moore, Alexis Robertson and Richard Thimons.
Also, thanks to AP employees Jody Berisko, Rachel
Brown and Marlane Saye, and a special thanks to Board

The first thing you notice when you see Maci
is her extra fluffy tail. She loves attention
and just wants to be held. She loves play
time in the shelter’s office, grabbing any toy
she can get her paws on. This affectionate
and playful cat has a great personality that
will melt your heart as soon as you meet her.
Male - 4 years old - Buff - DLH
Clyde is such a cool cat. He is a light orange color
with the most amazing gold eyes. Clyde isn’t
one to be ignored. He loves rubbing on you and
will happily run up to you if you call him. Clyde
and his gal pal Bonnie lost their home when
their owner passed away. Could you open your
home to him (or possibly both of them)?
Male - Senior - Black - DSH
This senior kitty would sit on your lap forever
if you let him. Spooky spent a lot of time
alone in his previous home, which may be
why he wants so much love and attention.
He doesn’t have much interest in toys, possibly because he is older, but he adores being
kissed and fussed over.

Qi’s owner entered a nursing facility and was
not able to take him along. Qi is a handsome
tabby and white long haired cat. He is so unhappy without his owner. Qi would be happy
in an adult home without a lot of commotion.
Male - 1 year old - Black - DSH
Female - 1 year old - Tortie - DSH
Batman (the Dark Knight) and his trusty caped crusader partner Robin (striped nose tortie) were found
living together in an empty house. It was discovered that they, along with three dogs, were losing their
home due to various circumstances within their family. These kitties obviously get along with dogs and
with each other. These young cats would do great adopted together, but it is not a requirement of adoption. Both are outgoing and affectionate and should adjust well to a new home without much trouble.

past. These three are what we
consider “long-term residents.”
Devin has been with us for 7
months, Acura for 11 months
and Ugs for 9 months. Imagine waiting for almost an entire
year to find a loving home!
These cats all have very strong
and different personalities.

DEVIN
Devin and his siblings were
never the most social of cats.
He has come a very long
way in the 7 months he has
been with us. He may never
become a lap cat, but he has
made great strides in trusting
new people.
ACURA
Acura likes to keep to himself. He is
a little afraid of quick movements,
but if you approach him slowly
and gently, he will let you rub his
head forever. He needs to feel safe
and secure when you hold him...
so this little one may need a home
with adults. As one volunteer said
“Acura would be the perfect cat for
someone who doesn’t want to be
annoyed by a demanding cat.”
UGS
Ugs was trapped in a feral situation
right after Christmas of 2014, but
once he was checked out, he was
just too sweet to put back outside
with a colony where he obviously
didn’t really belong. He is now
approaching 5 years of age. He
originally spent some time in foster
care and now is at the shelter where
he has become a shelter favorite
among volunteers and staff.

This little guy is very shy at first, but quickly
warms up. He loves to walk, but is very content
to sit on a lap for some individual attention.
He is pretty noisy in his kennel, but he is only
clamoring for attention. Pooky knows his basic
commands and is anxious to show them off to
you. . . do you have time to watch him show
off for you?
Female - 10 years old - Lab Mix
Winnie was found with another dog, abandoned at a local park. She is a gentle, older girl
who will saunter slowly around the yard with a
volunteer or staff person. However, show her
a Frisbee and you’d think she was a teenager.
Winnie does know basic commands and appears to be housebroken. If you like sitting in
the back yard on a swing with a dog at your
feet, Winnie may be your gal.

really loves treats! Moco has a neurological issue that makes his back legs a little unsteady,

anyone he sees passing by. He enjoys the company of some dogs but not all, so of course a
meet-and-greet is necessary if you are looking
to add him to your canine pack.

Punky is the youngest of three housemates
that came to the shelter together. Punky was
suffering from an allergy that took most of his
fur. After a visit with the vet, Punky is well on
his way to recovery. He is your typical Labrador, loves everyone and everything he meets.

will fall in love.

Chevy was hit by a car and suffered some lip
lacerations and contusions to his leg. However,
from the minute he came into the shelter, you

that he had recent trauma. Chevy is the most lovable dog you may ever meet. He loves to just sit
in your lap, but he is a little big for that, so he is
content sitting close by. Chevy does not like cats,
so will need to be in a feline-free home.

pup had an unfortunate run-in with two dogs that
were much larger than him. Despite a few scars,

Lake arrived at the shelter on August 19, 2013 - yes, he has been with us for
just over two years. Denis started volunteering as a dog walker in December of
2014. Lake and Denis formed a bond in the months they walked together. In
September of 2015, Denis decided it was far past time that Lake had a home
to call his own. When asked what made him decide to adopt Lake, he answered
without hesitation, “Nobody ever gave him a chance. He deserves more than the
few minutes that people would give him.” Lake has transformed
this former cat owner into his new best friend. We wish them

both well.
