Load ‘em up into your car and bring them down to our Paper Retriever bins! By using the bins in our parking lot to recycle your unwanted paper, you help us to raise funds with each pound of paper collected. We also take aluminum cans. They may be dropped off in the fenced in area directly across the parking lot from the paper recycling bins. Thank you for thinking of Animal Protectors this holiday season. If you have any questions regarding our donation options, please contact us at mail@animalprotectors.net or 724-339-7388. Alumni Therapy Dogs ANIMAL PROTECTORS Board of Directors None of us at Animal Protectors can deny that shelter dogs make the best pets - we know that just as much as you do! But often we receive questions like, “is it harder to train an older dog,” or “is this dog here due to bad manners?” Training is essential in all pets – shelter dog or not – and we have a few alumni superstars to prove that shelter dogs have the ability to go above and beyond basic obedience class. Shuler VMD Newsletter Staff Susan Hillery Janice Citeroni Jeanne Lessig As soon as Marti walked into the shelter and saw a petite Maltipoo on her hind legs waving her front paws in the air for attention, she was hooked. Shortly after, Marti adopted Maggie from Animal ProMaggie tectors. Once home, Marti noticed that Maggie demonstrated a great love for people, especially children. Marti, a volunteer with the Animal Protectors fundraising team, decided to begin taking Maggie to events to help the shelter raise funds. After many swoons and pets, Marti knew that Maggie had a special touch and decided to begin work to have Maggie certified through Therapy Dogs United. Since 2011, Maggie has been using her therapy dog skills to visit nursing homes and attend AP events – still waving her front paws in the air to get attention and to put a smile on onlooker’s faces. Marti remarks that there are so many animals in the shelter that have just a much potential as Maggie, and they are waiting for you for When in need... We recently received a letter from Martha, who adopted her cat “Seven” over 13 years ago. Seven was hit by a car in December of 1999 and as a result, was left totally blind. Seven has lived a normal life and has even managed to catch two real live mice, cavorts with his cat friends, sleeps with Martha, and lives the life of the perfect companion. Martha says that despite the misfortune of his original injury, you could say that he’s Seven a “lucky Seven.” 2 Sirius Maggie has four canine siblings – Lucia, Reina, Alex and Crawley who she plays with happily. She enjoys rice cakes as treats, car rides and providing unconditional love to her family. Meet Nico! Nico, a beautiful light brown pit bull mix, was adopted from Animal Protectors about a year ago. His owner, Kelli had recently lost her beloved pet and decided she was ready to have a canine back in her life. She found Nico at Animal Protectors and instantly fell in love with him. Shortly after adoption, Kelli began training Nico to be a therapy dog. He passed the K-9 Good Citizen test and quickly moved into therapy work. Nico is a Certified Therapy Dog and is working on his Search and Rescue skills. Kelli takes Nico everywhere with her and her son – and Nico gains a lot of attention with his handsome looks, excellent manners and cool therapy dog duds. When talking about training Nico, Kelli mentions how many lives Nico has changed – with a gentle paw and a quiet demeanor, he has put so m a n y smiles on so many faces. Kelli is not shy about stating just how much of a family dog Nico is; not only does she say that she rescued Nico, but that Nico rescued her. Nico (Continued on page 7) people go the extra mile to care for these special animals. We have experienced some truly heroic adoptions over the years, some recent, some quite some time ago. There are countless numbers of people who have stepped forward over the years to adopt those animals that have health issues, age issues, and personality issues, those pets that really do not appeal to everyone (or anyone). Mike Keryeski their second chance. Sirius is a young Shepherd/Labrador mix who was featured in our last newsletter. He was roughly 1 year old when he arrived as a stray at our shelter and he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Sirius was so fortunate to find a family that was willing to love and care for him, knowing that his health issues will shorten his life expectancy. In a three-month timeframe, we have had the pleasure of meeting two dogs that have had past leg injuries that were so severe, amputation of the limb was the only option. Parker was fortunate to have found a family that fell in love with her and adopted her even before the amputation. Ricca (shown on page 5) will have her surgery soon and we’re confident that she will be adopted shortly after because she has such a great personality. Parker Levee is a 10 year old sheltie mix that came to the shelter as a stray. After a short time at the shelter, it was determined that she was diabetic. She is spending time in foster care until her dose of insulin can be determined and then she will be deemed adoptable. A special home will be needed for Levee. She will need someone who is willing to care for a dog like Levee, who will require monitoring and medication for many years. Her unconditional love will be their reward. A complete newsletter would be needed to thank everyone who adopted one of our special animals over the many years we have served the community. It warms our hearts to know that there are so many loving, caring animal lovers out there who are willing to go the extra mile to care for these deserving animals. Animal Protectors supporters and their four legged friends hit the trails at Harrison Hills Park in Natrona Heights on September 30, 2012, for the 3rd Annual Tails on the Trails dog walk to help raise funds for the shelter. It was a rainy morning, but that didn’t stop more than 120 walkers and their dogs from coming out to support the shelter. Everyone at Animal Protectors appreciates each and every walker, donor, t-shirt sponsor, volunteer and dog that helped to make this event such a huge success. This event gets better and better every year. We can’t wait to see what next year’s walk brings! We hope to see you all again at the 4th annual walk in 2013. Please be sure to tell your friends about this fun event. Calming Kellie Love at first sight works with pets, too! Heather, a dog walking volunteer at Animal Protectors, found her dog Kellie when she was walking dogs at the shelter. She took her for a walk and could not put her down. Kellie, a petite Chihuahua, was a gem. She was calm and enjoyed being around people – a characteristic that not all Chihuahua’s entertain. Heather, who suffers from anxiety, found that Kellie was a calming presence and talked with her doctor about using Kellie as a service dog. Heather, finding that when Kellie is with her, did not feel as anxious and was able to go out alone - she feels that when a wave of anxiety comes over her, Kellie helps to calm her by just sitting in her lap as if saying, “I am here for you, mom.” Kellie is certified with the ADA, which allows Heather to take her into public places. Kellie is always willing to accept a friendly pet from a passerby, but her main focus is on Heather. Kellie also gives back to Animal Protectors by dressing up in costume to attend meet and greets to help raise funds. In Honor of People...
